LESSON: THE FINAL CHALLENGE 9 LESSON OUTCOMES To build the confidence of each dancer To complete and rehearse the dance with an understanding of using rehearsal as a tool for refinement. To work as a team to achieve the best possible creative outcome CREATIVE CHALLENGE PROGRESS You are now in the process of putting the finishing touches on your piece and refining the choreography. Remember that your dance does not need to finish with performers on stage and music can be faded out. If you haven’t put a final ending on your dance, you need to go into this session with a plan and finish it. Endings can be simple or complex, depending on the needs of the dancer and the group. STARTER Watch Episode 9 and then ask the following question: • What hot tips did Lauren and David give for your performance? WARM UP As last week, do a warm-up that allows the dancers to think about their performance skills. Think back to the games from the INSET that were useful for focus and the projection of movement such as the 1-10 game and follow my leader, where big movements lead to huge movements. You can also identify a moment from your dance and get the dancers to stand in a freeze-frame, each dancer then has to think about how they can improve the shape they are making and to think about where they are looking. CREATIVE EXPLORATION Discuss the possibility of performing your dance for an audience, either for filming next week, or for assembly or a Christmas concert. • What other activities could you present with it? • Will you consider wearing the same type of outfits to dance or will you make some simple costumes? TOP TIPS Children can find the rehearsal process challenging and less exciting than creating the dance. To make the rehearsal process more interesting, intersperse it with discussion and watching each other perform sections. Discussion could be about how they are feeling about filming it and performing it for the ROH team and also about what they think about the work they have created. It would also be inspiring for them to watch the Royal Ballet dancers performing on the DVD or on YouTube. Walk through your dance and make sure everyone is aware of where they enter and exit the space. Remind students to be still if they are off stage and quiet whether they are in the performance space or not. Run the dance through a couple of times troubleshooting any problem areas. Rehearse without stopping. The more times you can encourage them to run through the dance, the better prepared they will feel for the ‘big one’. Watch some of The <strong>Nutcracker</strong> ballet on the website. Identify questions or themes for discussion, e.g. watch the professional dancers and comment on what they do to make their performance so engaging.
