Local Outreach, Harrisburg Pa… In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania The Women of Color Network, Inc. held its first on-ground local fundraiser titled: MY BLUE LIPS: An Evening of Art, Poetry, and Song on Friday, July 15, 2016, 6pm to 9pm during Harrisburg’s July 3 rd in the ‘Burg. Third in the 'Burg is a monthly event where individuals can travel from venue to venue browsing art, listening to music, and enjoying good food and drink. MY BLUE LIPS: An Evening of Art, Poetry, and Song was held at The District Bar and Lounge, 1014 N. 3 rd Street, Harrisburg, PA. The evening, co-hosted by MaDonna Awotwi and Shaashawn Dial-Snowden (WOCN, INC consultants), included: (1) a silent auction of one of a kind donated jewelry pieces, art, and shoes, (2) specialty drinks “Blue-Tini” and “Blue Lips” and (3) live art auction. Three women of color visual artists - Mecca Eli, Taqiyya Muhammad, and Nancy Mendes each donated an original piece of art on the My Blue Lips theme. Mecca Eli’s piece was titled New Beginning, Taqiyya Muhammad’s piece was titled Womanly Waves and Nancy Mendes donated a piece titled Moonlight Becomes Her. The fourth piece was a piece from an anonymous artist titled Three Minds: Life. Death. Infinity. Maria James-Thiaw, James Baltimore, and J. Branch shared original poetic stylings and Victoria Baltimore shared a contemporary dance on the theme of domestic violence and sexual assault survivor-hood.
(Continued Local Outreach, Harrisburg Pa…) The overwhelming majority of the attendees stayed at least an hour and included 60 members of diverse populations including the Vice President and Event Director of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central PA and a family from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Attendees were encouraged to bid on silent auction items and visit the “Selfie Station” where individuals could apply 1 of 4 hues of blue lipstick take a selfie, and complete a sign that said My Blue Lips. Many attendees donated their completed My Blue Lips sign back to the organization for use in a photo collage post campaign. Twice an hour the who, what, when, where and why of the Women of Color Network, Inc. was shared and a blue love offering box was circulated collecting donations. Almost $400.00 was raised in three hours. On July 29, 2016, Tonya Lovelace-Davis, CEO was a featured guest on Good Day PA, abc27’s (The Station Working for You) daily lifestyle program, airing at 12:30 each weekday afternoon. Tonya’s interview was specifically on the mission and vision of WOCN, Inc. and My Blue Lips Campaign. Pennsylvania viewers in Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York could watch the interview live. Viewers are encouraged to tune in to learn about local business offerings, connect with nonprofit groups, meet local authors, watch performances and learn from cooking demonstrations.
