Combining a strong ethos for high quality design with functional understanding and<br />
cultural sensitivity, enables us to deliver schemes that exceed our Clients’ expectations<br />

Anticipating change<br />
The complex nature of healthcare facilities is self evident. As designers,<br />
we need to understand and anticipate rapidly-changing methods of<br />
healthcare provision, incorporating our ideas into buildings suitable<br />
for future generations. A process which involves close collaboration<br />
between the Client and design teams will lead to a care environment<br />
which goes beyond functional requirements to create a place where<br />
people are given priority over processes and systems.<br />
A People-Focused Approach<br />
Architecture is, and always has been about People. This is a universal truth. The need for shelter,<br />
identity, inspiration and a sense of being are global concerns which transcend local differences.<br />
They are common issues which affect us all. In addressing these common challenges,<br />
architecture develops a multi-cultural language; a people-focused approach.<br />
<strong>Healthcare</strong> facilities often form the backdrop to the most defining moments in our lives.<br />
They are places of emotional extremes. They offer unique opportunities for designers to<br />
positively influence this experience and the quality of life of patients, visitors and staff – all of<br />
whom have to deal in different ways with the pressure of this emotional stress.<br />
<strong>Healthcare</strong> buildings have a traditional logic and function<br />
but often it’s at the expense of finding a humanising perspective.<br />

Quite apart from the fantastic staff who have been assembled<br />
from around the globe to run the Clinic, I am also very<br />
impressed with the building itself.<br />
It is humbling to see the plans so quickly translated into<br />
a living, functioning centre where clinicians, researchers<br />
and, most importantly, patients can find their needs met.<br />
Every detail seems to have been considered and I love<br />
how the design and the quality of light create a relaxed,<br />
unintimidating and comfortable space where people with<br />
these conditions would like to spend time.<br />

Rooted into the local landscape and protected by trees,<br />
The Rowan affords individuals attending the service<br />
the much needed privacy they require. There is real<br />
connectedness between the building and its natural<br />
surroundings.<br />
The architectural design team has listened to the<br />
voices of victims and understood fully the multifaceted<br />
requirements in delivering a range of support services to<br />
individuals and families whose lives have been affected<br />
by sexual violence. The Rowan has been designed to<br />
create a comfortable, calm, safe haven to those in need<br />
of this specialist service. The structure of the building and<br />
the materials chosen, making optimum use of natural<br />
resources, exudes: warmth, light, and a sense of space.The<br />
integrity of the build is there for all to see.<br />
The values upon which the Rowan was conceptualised will<br />
continue to be observed in the delivery of the service, from<br />
which I hope many will start their journey of recovery.<br />
