WELCOME
Dear colleagues,
after a very positive response to the 1 st Munich
Aortic Conference (MAC) and the 1 st Munich
Carotid Conference (MCC) in November and
December 2011, it is a pleasure to invite you to
the Munich Vascular Conference (MVC) 2012.
Aortic and carotid diseases constitute different
entities, however, share a variety of commonalities.
For example, an unstable aortic wall
in a patient with an aortic aneurysm may lead
to an aortic rupture, whereas an unstable carotid
plaque may embolise and cause an ischemic
stroke. In addition, both blood vessel
disorders affect in particular elderly patients,
where the risk of any intervention (either
open or endovascular) has to be balanced
against the natural course of the disease.
Even though a great variety of different imaging
and treatment modalities are available,
we still make use of rather old-fashioned criteria,
such as the degree of stenosis or the maximum
aortic diameter, to recommend either
open or endovascular intervention. In many
cases this leads to uncertainty whether or not
the individual patient should be treated by
conservative, endovascular or traditional open
surgical means. In addition, it is quite clear
that so-called “benign lesions” like non-stenotic
carotid plaques and small aneurysms may
become symptomatic or even cause strokes
and ruptures. Consequently, there is a need for
better criteria to identify patients at risk and
to refrain from unnecessary interventions.
4

The Munich Vascular Conference (MVC) 2012
therefore aims to establish an academic platform
for clinical researchers from vascular/cardiovascular
surgery and neurology, radiologists and imaging
specialists, vascular biologists, technicians and
otherwise involved specialists from cardiology,
anesthesia and other fields. A highly qualified
international faculty will report about their latest
clinical and basic research on conventional and
functional imaging, simulation and open or endovascular
treatment modalities for the entire aorta
and the extracranial carotid bifurcation.
MVC 2012 will thereby be a combination of the 2 nd
Munich Aortic Conference and the 2 nd Munich
Carotid Conference.
The Munich Vascular Conference 2012 will be held
under the patronage of the German Vascular
Society (DGG) and the foundation VASCULAR
INTERNATIONAL. We look forward to welcoming
you in Munich.
November 30th , 2012 | 11:00–11:20
Peter Berlit studied medicine in Kiel and Marburg, Germany, followed by his practice
of internal medicine and dermatology. Afterwards Peter Berlit became a resident in
Neurology at the University Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, leading to his habilitation
as adjunct professor in 1989. His subsequent station was at the Department of
Rheumatology at the University of California in San Diego, USA, as part of a visiting
professorship. From 1985 to 1992 Peter Berlit assumed responsibility as Assistant
Medical Director and temporarily Commissarial Manager at the Neurological Clinic
in Mannheim, Germany. Since 1992 his work is appreciated as Director of the Neurological
Institute with Clinical Neurophysiology at Alfried Krupp Hospital in Essen,
Germany. Additionally, Peter Berlit acquired renown by publishing several textbooks
for students and medical specialists. The most famous compendium “Memorix –
Neurology” has been translated into 10 languages by now. Peter Berlit put his scientific
focus on cerebrovascular diseases, neuroimmunology as well as autonomic disorders.
provision in dedicated high-volume centers?
December 1st , 2012 | 12:35–13:00
Matt Thompson is one of the most prominent Vascular Surgeons in Europe. He is Honorary
Professor at the Imperial College of Vascular Surgery and the Head of the St.
George’s Vascular Institute in London with widespread vascular research interests,
though with emphasis on aortic aneurysm. He is author and co-author of a multitude
three vascular journals.
SPECIAL LECTURE: What besides patient benefit motivates
vascular surgeons and vascular specialists?
November 30th , 2012 | 12:35–13:00
Frank J. Veith graduated from Cornell University Medical School before completing
an internship at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York and residency training
at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Harvard Medical School. In the 1970s and 80s
he turned his attention toward vascular surgery with an emphasis on lower extremity
revascularization procedures and the endovascular graft repair of abdominal aortic
aneurysms. Frank J. Veith's group was the first to perform an endovascular aneurysm
repair in the United States. Frank J. Veith held positions as Chief of Vascular Surgery
and Chairman of Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College
of Medicine for many years. Moreover, he has held the William J. Von Liebig Chair in
