Celebrate
Labor Day
all weekend
The community of Sutherland is
getting ready to celebrate its 74th
Labor Day Celebration during
the first weekend in September.
The 2016 festivities will kick off
this year at 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2,
with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to
celebrate the grand opening of the
R.L. Johannsen Center at 110 Ash St.
in downtown Sutherland.
An appreciation meal will be held
5:15-7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome
to attend.
The facility is set to become home
to Sutherland’s new community center,
American Legion Hall and city
offices.
The rest of the annual celebration
will take place Saturday-Monday,
Sept. 3-5.

Among the other festival highlights
is the Noah’s Ark Daycare Center’s 5K
Cheetah Chase & 1-Mile Tortoise Trot
Family Run/Walk.

Sutherland Church of Christ. The cost
per person for the 5K the day of the
race is $30; the price per person for
the run/walk is $25.
A limited supply of event T-shirts
— adult or youth size — may be available
on race day, but there will be no
size availability guarantee. The cost
per person for a T-shirt only is $15.
The race will begin at 8 a.m. at the
church and end at the same spot.
Refreshments will be provided for
participants following the event. An
awards ceremony immediately will
follow the run and there will be a
door prize drawing for participants.
Awards will be given to the first-place

finisher in each division. Overall firstplace
male and female finishers also
will receive an additional award each.
Funds that are received will be used
to help support the general operating
needs and equipment necessary for
the day-care center, which was formed
to serve a need in the Sutherland community
for quality child care.

Fundraising event
There also will be a fundraising
event for the Sutherland Senior Activity
Center at the Willoway Complex,
the former Sutherland Consolidated
School that is home to independent
living apartments for senior citizens,
a fitness center, an indoor swimming
pool and spa, and a meeting room.
The Willoway Complex, located at
409 Ash St., is promoting the outdoor
event as one to celebrate community.
The event will include meals, a silent
auction and free entertainment —
Christian music group Shades from
Springdale, AR, as well as local singers
— 4:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3.
People are encouraged to bring their
own blankets or chairs.
The meals will include pulled pork
sandwiches, hot dogs, beans, chips,
refreshments and homemade ice
cream and bars. The price will be $8
per person.
All proceeds will go toward the purchase
of a large smart TV for the senior
activity center, which is a nonprofit
organization; all donations may be
tax-deductible.
Shades, whose members tried out
on “America’s Got Talent” in the past,
describes itself as “maybe a little modern,
maybe a little old-fashioned.”
Shades has been described as “an
exciting, new, thought-provoking
music group with a unique taste in
feeling, storytelling and deep messages
that are meant to touch the
hearts and souls of their listeners of all
ages, in the many levels, layers and the
‘shades’ that we all are.”
The singer-songwriter group is made
up of three sisters — Kristian, Karessa
and Kearah Holt. F
