Something seemed off last Sunday as we 

walked the last half block. All of the doors 

were closed, a handful of people were gathered 

by the front door, and the worship 

director held a blow-horn in his hand to 

make an announcement. 

Then I noticed the poster-size sign taped 

to the front door: “Gone for Good.” 

My mind began to race. What on earth 

could have happened? Was there a dispute 

over the use of the Bible Conference facilities? 

Had something happened with the 

pastor or church leadership? 

None of the above. 

Turns out we were not gathering to worship 

that morning, but going out to serve 

— in other words, gone out to do good. 

Our group was asked to cross the street to 

the Okoboji Middle School and help prepare 

the building for the arrival of students 

this week. Dressed in a dress and heels, 

I wasn’t expecting to clean lockers, bathrooms 

and windows, but it worked. In just

The community of Sutherland is 

getting ready to celebrate its 74th 

Labor Day Celebration during 

the first weekend in September. 

The 2016 festivities will kick off 

this year at 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2, 

with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to 

celebrate the grand opening of the 

R.L. Johannsen Center at 110 Ash St. 

in downtown Sutherland. 

An appreciation meal will be held 

5:15-7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome 

to attend. 

The facility is set to become home 

to Sutherland’s new community center, 

American Legion Hall and city 

offices. 

The rest of the annual celebration 

will take place Saturday-Monday, 

Sept. 3-5.

is the Noah’s Ark Daycare Center’s 5K

event for the Sutherland Senior Activity

The Willoway Complex, located at 

409 Ash St., is promoting the outdoor 

event as one to celebrate community. 

The event will include meals, a silent 

auction and free entertainment — 

Christian music group Shades from 

Springdale, AR, as well as local singers 

— 4:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3. 

People are encouraged to bring their 

own blankets or chairs. 

The meals will include pulled pork 

sandwiches, hot dogs, beans, chips, 

refreshments and homemade ice 

cream and bars. The price will be $8 

per person. 

All proceeds will go toward the purchase 

of a large smart TV for the senior 

activity center, which is a nonprofit 

organization; all donations may be 

tax-deductible. 

Shades, whose members tried out 

on “America’s Got Talent” in the past, 

describes itself as “maybe a little modern, 

maybe a little old-fashioned.” 

Shades has been described as “an 

exciting, new, thought-provoking 

music group with a unique taste in 

feeling, storytelling and deep messages 

that are meant to touch the 

hearts and souls of their listeners of all 

ages, in the many levels, layers and the 

‘shades’ that we all are.”

Music Festival continues quest to save rural culture

Summary: 

For 41 years, Smithsonian Institution 

recording artist Bob 

Everhart, a BMI songwriter and 

publisher, has passionately 

been hosting an event in Iowa, 

the major thrust being the preservation 

and performance of 

America’s forgotten rural music. 

“I love America’s old-time music” 

Everhart said. “It’s the very soul of 

who we are as a people. Gospel 

music is one of my favorite genres, 

and when it’s old-time we really get 

to hear the ‘soul’ of what Gospel 

music is all about. I also like all the 

other forms of music that gather at 

the festival, and it’s pretty incredible, 

traditional and classic country 

music; ragtime; bluegrass; folk; 

mountain; blues; cowboy; even 

western swing and honky-tonk. 

Old time music may be going by 

the wayside, but not if Bob Everhart 

has anything to say about 

it. For more than four decades he’s 

organized the Old Time Music Festival 

and Pioneer in Expo in Le Mars, IA. 

The 80-year-old Everhart is a Smithsonian 

Institute recording artist, songwriter 

and publisher who counts the 

late Woody Guthrie has a hero and 

like Guthrie has recorded for Moses 

Asch in New York. 

His passion is for the rural music of 

the country’s past, present and what 

he hopes is a long future. 

“This is our 41st year trying to save 

American rural culture, especially 

music,” Everhart said. “In my observation, 

rural music is different from 

commercial versions because it’s 

intensely human and sincere in relating 

a story. This music is a singularly 

important part of American culture.” 

This year’s festival runs from Aug. 

29 through Sept. 4 at the Plymouth 

County Fairgrounds in Le Mars. The 

“ice cream capitol of the world” will 

become the “old time music capitol of 

the world” for that particular week. 

And musicians will be coming from 

far and wide to join in the fun and 

perform for fans of old time music. 

Buffalo Gals will be coming all the 

way from England. 

“I’m very familiar with Appalachian 

music and they play it really well,” 

Everhart said. “They’re coming all 

this way to see and perform for some 

like-minded people keeping the music 

alive. We also have more younger 

people coming this year than ever. 

They want to perform and be part of 

the group that keeps it alive.” 

Ben Steneker, the “godfather of 

Dutch country,” will be there for “one 

last hurrah.” 

Musicians from Bavaria and Australia 

will be there as well, along with 

many from around the United States 

who all share an affinity for these particular 

styles of music. 

In all, more than 450 performers 

will grace ten stages during the run of 

the festival. 

They will perform music from the 

genres of gospel, ragtime, bluegrass, 

folk, mountain, blues, bluegrass, cowboy, 

western swing, honky-tonk and 

more. 

“This music is about honesty and 

sincerity and a love of the artisty and 

the musical process,” Everhart said. 

“I’ve been playing this music about 70 

years now and it’s the kind of music 

that permeates our being.” 

The late Patti Page once came out of 

retirement to attend the festival and 

Everhart always remembers what she 

said before heading back to California. 

“She told me and wife, Sheila, to 

‘keep it country’ because nobody else 

is in this area,” Everhart said. 

So ‘keep it country’ they will. And

Traveling west on Interstate 90 across South 

Dakota, you’ll find plenty of fishing spots 

with some delicious catch. 

My grandparents have a home five miles east 

of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South 

Dakota. Growing up, my grandparents, parents, 

brother and I would hit up the best fishing spots 

western South Dakota has to offer, one particular 

spot being Sylvan Lake. At Sylvan we’d limit 

out on rainbow trout fish and have a massive 

feast the following night. 

However, my fishing experience has never really 

extended to Okoboji. From time to time I’ve 

dropped a line or two in on East Lake, but I’ve 

never taken it too seriously. 

This week my friend, Zack Herrig, a native of 

the Okoboji area, helped me fish. Around 5:30 

a.m. I made my way over to Arthur Heights 

neighborhood in Center Grove, IA. Located on 

East Lake, Arthur Heights hosts plenty of docks 

that are perfect for an early morning of fishing. 

Zack explained to me that by placing my line 

in near a dock-supporting post, the fish tend to 

wade there and are most likely to bite. 

Within 30 seconds of our fishing adventure, 

numerous fish grabbed a hold of our lines. Yellow 

bass and blue gill were the consistent catch 

of the morning. Some of the fish were the size of 

my fist whereas others were a decent sized catch. 

Every fish we caught we placed back in the water 

and prepared more bait on the line. Never in my 

life had I experienced such easy fishing. With 

minimal effort I felt as though I could catch the 

entire lake’s worth of fish. 

As the sun slowly crept over the trees, the fish 

catching gradually declined and dense humidity 

enveloped the lake. Although there were no 

boats on the water just yet, the humming of 

motors in the distance told us that the morning 

rush of lake activity was about to begin. 

Looking back on fishing with Zack, I’m happy 

that I took the time to fish in Okoboji. Just like 

golf, fishing is a lifelong activity that can be

butterflies 

Nature Center hosts pollinator celebration 

Almost everybody loves butterflies, 

but bees are a different 

story. 

Many people don’t appreciate bees, 

and other pollinators, for that matter, 

like the Dickinson County Nature 

Center believes that they should. 

That’s one of the reasons they have 

decided to host an annual Bee & Butterfly 

Festival and this year it is set to 

take place from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, 

Sept. 2. 

“Without pollinators, our world 

would cease to exist as we know it. We 

wouldn’t have fresh food or beautiful 

flowers without pollinators, such as 

butterflies and bees, doing their duties. 

The pollination of bees is responsible 

for one in three bites of food 

that we take, so just imagine one-third 

of your food intake gone,” said Kiley 

Roth, the community relations coordinator 

with the Dickinson County 

Nature Center. “We need to see just 

how important these creatures are and 

just how delicate they are. If we don’t 

take care of the environment so they 

have food sources and habitat, we will 

have devastating consequences.” 

But don’t worry. The festival is 

geared towards fun for one and all — 

no matter your age. 

“All ages are welcome at this event. 

It is fantastic for families with young 

children, but the speakers will also be 

great for teens and adults,” Roth said. 

“This is the biggest event the Dickinson 

County Conservation Board hosts, and 

we love having hundreds of people 

come to the nature center for an entertaining 

and educational time.” 

One of the most exciting events 

at last year’s festival was a live demonstration 

by Ocheyedan beekeeper 

Marlene Boernsen. She will be back 

again this year at 6 p.m., to demonstrate 

how honey is extracted from 

honeycomb in her hives. 

“People often see the white hive 

boxes in fields throughout the area, 

and we see honey for sale in stores, 

but we miss the process in between,” 

Roth said. “We want people to attend 

the honey extraction demonstration 

for several reasons. First, when people 

get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of 

any activity, they make a memory and 

have a story to tell. That gives them a 

more vested interest in that activity. 

We hope that people will gain that 

vested interest and appreciation for 

honeybees through this program so 

that they will then want to learn more 

about how to save our honeybees and 

native bees.” 

In addition to the live honey extraction 

demonstration there will be 

plenty of other fun things to do.

Pollinator Paradise will be open 

during the event so people can tour

“This event has something for anyone 

who wants to get outside. We 

have vendors, crafts, lawn games, door 

prizes, photos with Sweetie the Bee, 

the Iowa State University Insect Zoo, 

the honey extraction demonstration 

as well as a magician,” Roth said. “The 

Farm to Fork food truck will also be 

on site.” 

There will also be an opportunity to 

tag monarchs inside the Nature Center. 

“We love the monarch tagging, 

where people can get up close to a 

monarch butterfly. We love seeing 

kids’ smiles when they are meeting 

Sweetie the Bee or making a fun craft 

to take home,” Roth said. “All of the 

staff absolutely love what we do and 

the impact that the Dickinson County 

Conservation Board is making, and 

we are passionate about fostering an 

appreciation of the environment in 

others, so this festival is just one way 

to do that!” F

The Barefoot Bar is sending summer 

off with a party. 

Labor Day is the unofficial 

end of the summer season, and for 

the past 10 years or so, The Barefoot 

Bar has used the day as a means to 

celebrate not mourn the passing of 

another summer season. 

“It started as a way for the staff to be 

able to cut loose after a long summer. 

We bring in ‘celebrity bartenders’ so 

most of our staff can be on the other 

side of the bar for this event,” said 

Debbie Parks, the marketing director 

for Parks Marina. “It’s a very relaxed 

night and most of the volunteer bartenders 

come back year after year, and 

work for free drinks and a t-shirt!” 

The Labor Day Dock Party will be 

preceded by another event that has 

become an annual celebration as well. 

On Monday, Sept. 5, the Arnolds Park- 

Okoboji Fire Rescue will host a fundraiser 

at The Barefoot Bar at 1 p.m. 

They’ll be hosting their annual Firemen’s 

Auction. People can come to 

bid, donate items or just to have fun. 

“It’s a great tradition and a lot of 

fun, that will start at 1 p.m. You can 

drop off any donations here at Parks 

Marina or come that day and bid on 

the items for a great cause,” Parks said. 

The Labor Day Dock Party kicks off 

officially at 5 p.m. with half-priced 

drinks and a performance by Tim 

Horsman and the Traidmarx. 

“It has been a long standing tradition 

for Tim Horsman and the Traidmarx 

to play this event. They have 

one of the best brass sections I’ve ever 

heard. When they play here, it’s an 

absolute treat! Sometimes Butch and 

I even get up to sing or attempt to play 

an instrument,” Parks said. “Many 

times, we have some very talented 

guest appearances that join the band 

for a song or two.” 

In addition to enjoying the tunes 

and some fun beverages, Parks said 

that people often let their hair down 

and enjoy some of the other things 

The Barefoot has to offer. 

“I would also not be surprised 

to see some adults going down the 

waterslide, or some of the staff being 

dunked in the beer tanks,” she said. 

Overall, this event for which there is 

never a cover charge, is a great way for 

locals and tourists alike to say farewell 

to the summer season. 

“It’s just a great way to celebrate the 

end of a fun summer, and the start 

of another beautiful season at Okoboji,” 

Parks said. “I love all the locals 

and tourists that show up and there’s 

lots of hugs and a few tears as we 

say goodbye to some of our summer 

staff.” F

IRRMA Hall of Fame inductees to rock the Roof Garden 

This weekend party starts and ends 

with a show. More specifically, a 

rock ‘n’ roll show. 

The Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association’s 

Hall of Fame Induction 

weekend begins with a kickoff concert 

by The Senders at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 

2, at the Roof Garden in Arnolds Park. 

Tickets are $10. 

“As it’s been from day one, we use 

this weekend to recognize and induct 

those who’ve had an impact on rock 

‘n’ roll in the state of Iowa,” said John 

Senn, president of the IRRMA board 

of directors. “And every year we add 

some new things to the weekend. This 

year one of those things is the concert 

Friday night with The Senders, which 

is kind of continuation of our summer 

Rock the Roof Garden series.” 

Other new events this year include 

a silent auction and musicians swap 

meet at the Roof Garden. 

Saturday starts off with a pancake 

breakfast before the opening ceremony 

and a march down Lake Street to 

the rock ‘n’ roll museum. Drummers, 

guitarists, horn players. Anybody and 

everybody is invited to march in the 

parade and play some music along 

the way. There is also a vintage car 

show, Battle of the Bands and inductee 

meet and greet. 

“We get some old cars around that 

goes right along with classic rock ‘n’ 

roll music,” Senn said. “And the Battle 

of the Bands competition for a recording 

contract with Catamount Studio 

of Cedar Falls is really fun. These 

young groups are very good and will 

strive to be part of the hall of fame 

one day themselves.” 

Sunday begins with an omelet 

breakfast at the Majestic Pavilion in 

the morning then moves to the Sami 

Center in Spirit Lake for the induction 

ceremony in the afternoon. 

“The Sami Center is a beautiful 

place. It’s always fun and a great thing 

to honor these musicians and inductees,” 

Senn said. “This will be our 20th 

induction class and kind of a kick-off 

to the 20th year of the association.” 

Back at the Majestic Pavilion, there 

will be an autograph party. To cap off 

a weekend of events there will be the 

Induction Spectacular Concert featuring 

eight of this year’s Hall of Fame 

inductees. 

Tickets are $45 for reserved seats 

and $35 for general admission seats 

in the Roof Garden. The show begins 

at 6:30 p.m. 

There are 26 inductees in this year’s 

Hall of Fame class, six of whom will 

join Class of 1997 inductees, The 

Velaires, as well as Dee Jay & the Runaways 

who will also be on stage for 

the concert. 

Senn is a founding member of 

Dee Jay & The Runaways so he has a 

unique and close perspective on the 

importance of keeping rock ‘n’ roll 

alive and recognizing its historical 

importance in the state. 

“I grew up in a time period when Elvis 

came on the scene and the rock ‘n’ 

roll revolution kicked off. Those that 

lived through it saw something culturally 

change throughout the country,” 

Senn said. “That created a lot of young 

groups with an excitement to go try 

and make it. It’s an imporant piece 

of our history and there are a lot of 

things this state has to be proud of.”

be Johnny Rogers, Drivetime, Street 

Band, Lynn Allen, Mourning Glory 

Rock Band and Flying Marsupials. 

“This will be some really good entertainment 

from some tremendous 

acts,” Senn said. “People that have

they’ll never miss another one. We 

always encourage people to come out 

and see some of Iowa’s best.” F

Three locations host final flea markets of the season 

There is time for one more big 

antiquing excursion before the 

official conclusion of the summer 

season. Labor Day weekend will 

see the final shows of the year at Vick’s 

Corner World, Treasure Village and 

the Dickinson County Fairgrounds. 

Each location also hosts antique 

shows and flea markets on both 

Memorial Day Weekend and around 

Fourth of July earlier in the summer. 

The shows this Labor Day weekend 

all run from Sept. 3-5, though each 

location has slightly different hours. 

“We’ll probably have the best turnout 

in terms of vendor numbers this 

weekend compared to the other two 

we host earlier in the summer,” said 

John Guthrie, a staff member at the 

Dickinson County Expo Center. 

Hours for the show at the fairgrounds 

are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday 

and Sunday then 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on 

Labor Day. 

Guthrie encourages everyone to 

come check out the wares offered by a 

wide range of vendors on hand at the 

fairgrounds throughout the weekend. 

“We’ll continue to have some of 

the high-end merchandise in terms 

of glassware and jewelry,” Guthrie 

said. “There will also be wood crafts 

outside and new vendors so everyone 

should stop and see what they have to 

offer.” 

Guthrie noted that it’s not just 

new vendors that should interest flea 

market visitors, but also the vendors 

that make their way to each and every 

show as their inventory often changes. 

“You really never know so you just 

have to stop and see what’s out here,” 

Guthrie said. 

“Sometimes the vendors really get 

into decorating their booths with fun 

carnival or ’50s themes. It can be really 

interesting to see. There is also the 

Golden Buys Truckload Outlet Sale 

nearing it’s end-of-the-year extravaganza.” 

There will also be two food vendors 

on hand. 

Between the antique show and the 

Golden Buys Truckload Outlet Sale 

there will be plenty of merchandise to 

peruse Labor Day weekend and curious 

shoppers should stop by.
