OP tower rescue successful 

Gas leak redirects traffic 

near Orland Square

An Orland Park public 

works employee reportedly 

was in stable condition Aug. 

23 after he suffered a medical 

emergency inside a water 

tower near the northwest corner 

of Silver Lake Country 

Club. 

Orland Fire Protection District 

was dispatched around 

1:49 p.m. to the tower, near 

Golfview Drive and 88th Avenue, 

according to Battalion 

Chief Nick Cinquepalmi. 

“It was our understanding 

we had a medical emergency 

... about 80 feet up,” Cinquepalmi 

said. 

A public works employee 

reportedly had an undisclosed 

medical emergency while 

working inside the tower 

and needed to be removed. 

He reportedly had climbed 

up through the water tower’s 

internal ladder system before 

suffering the emergency. 

The fire district first assessed 

the situation, then 

called for “additional resources” 

from its own companies, 

Cinquepalmi said. 

The employee reportedly 

was reached with a ladder that 

extends up to 100 feet. Responders 

medically stabilized 

him inside the tower, then 

learned they had two options 

for extracting the employee: 

from the top or the underside 

of the tank bulb through 

a scuttle hole, Cinquepalmi 

said. 

“We worked with public 

works to find the second form 

of access,” he added. 

Cinquepalmi said the employee 

was closer to the scuttle 

hole on the underside of 

the bulb, and firefighters used 

a harness to safely bring him 

to the ground. He was then 

transported to Palos Community 

Hospital in stable condition, 

Cinquepalmi said. 

The rescue mission was 

completed in roughly 40 minutes, 

he added. 

“I think the guys did an 

excellent job,” Cinquepalmi 

said, crediting the district’s 

“depth of personnel” and confined 

spaces training. “Everything 

went well. All the companies 

coordinated just fine.” 

The public works employee 

was never left alone in the 

tower during the rescue, he 

added.

An Aug. 23 gas leak near Orland Square 

required the gas company to shut off gas 

and police to redirect traffic near the mall, 

according to Village of Orland Park Public 

Information Officer Joe La Margo. 

“Police were there for traffic control, 

and the Public Works Department was 

there to provide emergency location to 

[the leak], and the utility company shut off 

the gas,” La Margo said. 

Public Works helped map the utilities 

lines and ensure that no other utilities 

would be damaged in the process. Representatives 

of the Orland Fire Protection 

District also were on the scene, according 

to La Margo. He added said no one was 

hurt and there was no evacuation necessary 

near the leak. 

La Margo said he did not know how 

long responding units were on the scene, 

what caused the leak, and whether or not 

it had been fixed or was still shut off as of 

late afternoon Aug. 23.

on Thailand wildlife 

conservation

Katie Manning does not 

recall how old she was when 

she heard the call to get involved 

with humanitarian 

and animal preservation efforts, 

but she will never forget 

the moment. 

For her, it can all be traced 

back to a letter she received 

from world-renowned wildlife 

conservationist Jane 

Goodall. 

“My sister had written a 

letter to her, and Jane Goodall 

actually wrote back,” 

Manning said. “She told 

me to follow my dreams 

and make an impact on the 

world.” 

Those words stuck with 

the now 18-year-old Orland 

Park native, who is in the 

midst of raising funds for 

her biggest volunteer effort 

to date. 

The 2016 Sandburg High 

graduate is raising money 

for a wildlife conservation 

internship in Thailand next 

summer, where she is to help 

elephants mistreated by the 

tourism industry get reintroduced 

into the wild. She also 

is to teach English to local 

children in the city of Chiang 

Mai. 

The six-week program is 

one of many organized by 

Global Vision International. 

GVI is social enterprise that 

has run volunteer and international 

education programs 

since 1998. 

Manning’s goal is to raise 

$7,000, which will cover 

airfare, the cost of the program 

and day-to-day expenditures. 

Manning came across 

GVI after looking into a 

similar program last summer 

in Ecuador. She received a 

scholarship to help abused 

animals rehabilitate at a 

sanctuary, but her parents 

thought she was too young. 

“I was kind of upset about 

it,” Manning said with a 

chuckle. “But I just volunteered 

around here, and then 

I came across this Thailand 

program. 

“I’ve always loved elephants. 

They are my favorite 

animal, because they’re so 

mentally and socially interesting. 

Plus, I get to teach 

English.” 

Manning said she wanted 

to start as early as she could 

with the fundraising efforts, 

because this is an opportunity 

too good to pass up. 

“I just love being able to 

be able make a change and 

make a difference,” she said. 

“I volunteer because you not 

only help others but you help 

yourself, too.” 

Where it all began 

Manning said she did not 

have a mentor and was never 

guided into volunteering; it 

was something she discovered 

on her own. 

One of her first fundraising 

efforts came in junior 

high, just after a tsunami 

struck in Japan. 

“I asked the principal if 

we could sell suckers to help 

the children who were left 

without homes and clothing,” 

Manning said. “We got 

to do that, and I made sure to 

give the credit to the student 

council.” 

An animal lover for most 

of her life, Manning began 

volunteering the summer 

after her eighth-grade year 

at The Children’s Farm at 

the Center in Palos Heights, 

which she did for five years. 

She also volunteered at 

camps at the Lake Katherine 

Nature Center and Botanic 

Gardens, which help youths 

connect with nature and how 

they can do their part to sustain 

it. 

She also has raised money 

for sick children, was twice

Divine Providence Church in 

Westchester celebrated the spirit 

of giving during its 11th annual 

Christmas in July toy drive to 

benefit the Pediatric Oncology 

Treasure Chest Foundation. 

Parishioners collected more 

than 1,200 toys, gifts for teens, 

$110 in gift cards and $100 in 

cash to help children and teens 

fighting cancer. 

The not-for-profit Treasure 

Chest Foundation now supports 

more than 9,300 children and 

teens each month who are diagnosed 

with cancer by providing 

a toy or gift card in 49 hospitals 

nationwide. Nowhere else in 

the nation does such a program 

exist. Treasure Chest Foundation 

CEO and Founder Colleen 

Kisel founded the organization 

in 1996 after her then 7-yearold 

son Martin had been diagnosed 

with leukemia in 1993. 

Kisel discovered that giving her 

son a toy after each procedure 

provided a calming distraction 

from his pain. Martin recently 

celebrated his 23rd anniversary 

of remission from the disease 

earlier this year.

Manning said these types 

of efforts have allowed her 

to forge deeper connections 

with people and environments. 

“Being selfless and volunteering 

really connects you 

with people from different 

cultures,” she said. “Anything 

I can do that brings 

about change and/or gives 

people or animals a chance 

at a good life, I would love 

to do it.” 

Getting there 

Manning is set to embark 

on her undergrad studies at 

Williams College in Williamstown, 

Massachusetts. 

She chose the small liberal 

arts school because of its 

environmental programs 

and their ties to economic 

and social issues. The school 

also aligns with her other 

passions — poetry, drawing 

and playing the violin. 

After school, she said she 

would like to continue her 

self-motivated efforts as 

member of the Peace Corps. 

Before she gets there, 

Manning is concentrating on 

how she will continue her 

fundraising efforts for Thailand. 

She already has raised 

$1,200, mostly through the 

sales of chocolates outside 

of a local Walgreens and 

just talking to people about 

the program. She said she 

will have to make a payment 

of $1,500 by the end of the 

December to secure a spot, 

with the remainder due in 

the spring. 

There are two sessions for 

the program, with one starting 

June 24 and the other 

July 22. Manning is targeting 

the earlier program.

to their incoming 

students by granting families 

the chance to look at the 

facilities, as well as meet 

faculty and administrative 

staff.

She described the first

year as “exciting.” 

“We love seeing everybody,”

“It’s amazing they grow 

so much, and everyone has 

so much excitement coming 

back. A lot of our families 

stay because we’re a neighborhood 

school. So, we get

is joining the district as an 

incoming first-grader. 

“I think this is a good 

thing to do,” Sade said. “It 

helps us to be able to tour 

the school to know what 

she’s getting into, a little of 

what to expect, meeting the 

teachers.” 

McClinton echoed those 

sentiments, sharing his desire 

to stay in contact with 

teachers throughout the 

year.

the third one,” Krapauskas 

said. “We made history with 

it, because it’s so different 

from the other health and 

wellness events out there. 

All of our events are for 

fundraising, but this one is 

also to educate the community. 

We have the students 

serve the dinner, and everyone 

loves that. We’ve developed 

a reputation, we have 

a following and we plan on 

selling more tickets than we 

did last year.” 

Krapauskas explained 

the teachers’ grants support 

unique learning projects. 

She said grant funds previously 

have been used on 

poetry, literacy, author visits 

and more. She noted the 

2016-2017 grants have been 

chosen, with eight grants 

having been selected at different 

amounts.

The Health and Wellness 

Event’s keynote speaker is 

Dr. Deanna Minich author 

of “How to Live a Full- 

Spectrum Life Through 

Whole Detox”. Krapauskas 

explained Minich’s detox 

specializes in cleansing the 

body with healthy food. 

“Dr. Deanna is all about 

the rainbow, eating the rainbow, 

wearing the rainbow 

and all of the colors of the 

spectrum, and how we can 

live our lives and be healthier 

and following that,” 

Krapauskas said. “It’s not 

just detoxing with food but 

detoxing your mind, your 

spirit, your stress level so it’s 

involved in all of these areas 

of detoxing.” 

Krapauskas said healthy 

lifestyles and detoxing make 

people feel better to be 

healthier. She said Minich 

has simple methods to assist 

individuals with their health. 

“This is great stuff,” Krapauskas 

said. “Once you see 

the picture of health, you 

just want to be like that and 

be as healthy as you can be. 

We’re going to have a lot of 

education at this event.” 

The D230 Foundation 

partners with school leaders 

and community volunteers 

to assist in the educational 

process by offering scholarships 

to the district’s graduating 

seniors, as well as 

offer additional classroom 

funding. 

The D230 Foundation is 

an independent 501 (c)(3) 

nonprofit organization that 

serves more than 8,000 students 

each year. Over its decade-long 

span, D230 Foundation 

has offered more than 

$200,00 in grants and $2,500 

in college scholarships to 

graduating seniors from its 

district high schools.

Chicago woman reportedly burglarized 

vehicles, used stolen credit cards nearby

burglarized 

vehicles

stolen credit cards at a store 

at Orland Square. 

Eunisha White, of 7252 

S. Bennett Ave. in Chicago, 

was charged Aug. 22 with 

two counts of burglary to 

motor vehicle, a Class 2 felony, 

and two counts of unlawful 

use of a credit card, a 

Class 4 felony, according to 

a press release issued Thursday, 

Aug. 25, by the Orland 

Park Police Department. 

Police reportedly received 

a report Aug. 22 regarding a 

wallet taken from an unlocked 

vehicle outside Twin Peaks, 

16154 S. LaGrange Road. 

The wallet contained several 

credit cards that subsequently 

were used at the Janie and 

Jack children’s store at Orland 

Square, police said. 

Officers responded to the 

store and were able to get a 

detailed description of the 

subject who used the stolen 

credit cards, according to the 

press release. That description 

reportedly was relayed to other 

officers and mall security. 

While police were searching 

for a suspect, another burglary 

to an unlocked motor 

vehicle with a stolen wallet 

was reported outside Marcus 

Cinema, 16350 S. LaGrange 

Road. Shortly thereafter, mall 

security began following a 

female who matched the description 

relayed by Orland 

Park officers, according to 

the press release. 

Officers located White, 

who reportedly was carrying 

two Janie and Jack shopping 

bags. Receipts in the shopping 

bags matched the purchases 

made on the stolen 

credit cards, police said. 

One of the stolen credit 

cards was located in White’s 

pants pocket, and she was 

taken into custody, police 

added. The wallet stolen 

from Twin Peaks was located 

in the parking lot where 

White was stopped, according 

to the press release. The 

wallet reported stolen from 

Marcus Cinema was later 

recovered from White’s vehicle, 

police added. 

Bond was set Aug. 23 at 

$15,000 for White, with her 

next court date set for Sept. 

14, police said.

Dance Company Auditions 


Park Recreation Department’s 

Dance Company is 

scheduled to hold auditions 

for the 2016-2017 season at 

6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, 

in Room 101 of the Cultural 

Center, 14760 S. Park Lane. 

Dancers are to dress in 

appropriate dance attire and 

must be accompanied by a 

parent. Parents will attend a 

mandatory meeting before 

auditions at 6:15 p.m. 

The Dance Company is 

for serious dancers, and an 

additional dance/jazz class 

is required. Junior Dance 

Company is for those in 

grades sixth grade through 

eighth grade, and Senior 

Dance Company for students 

in high school. The 

program is led by veteran 

dance instructors Colleen 

Panega and Kristin Lux. 

Dance Company rehearsals 

are on Thursday evenings, 

and advanced ballet/ 

jazz class on Monday evenings. 

The Dance Company 

season runs for 31 weeks, 

from Sept. 12-Dec. 8, and 

Jan. 9-May 25. The fee for 

the year is $700 for residents 

and $875 for non-residents, 

and includes classes, rehearsals 

and two costumes.

Marie M. Baird, of Orland 

Park, recently completed the 

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine 

at the Chicago College 

of Osteopathic Medicine

Baird is the daughter of 

Orland Park residents Jeffrey 

and Marian Baird. She 

graduated from Sandburg 

High School in 2007, and 

earned a Bachelor of Science 

in biology and a Bachelor of 

Science in psychology, with 

minors in neuroscience, as 

well as women and gender 

studies, from Loyola University 

in Chicago in 2011. 

While at MWU, she served 

as treasurer of the Student 

American Academy of Osteopathy 

and completed research

residency program in family 

medicine at Franciscan St.

department. 

The event was held at 

Lifetime Fitness in Orland 

Park and had free gifts and 

raffle prizes for those who

Police Reports 

Chicago woman with prior convictions charged with felony retail theft 

Latyra Lewis, 40, of 10339 

S. Calumet Ave. in Chicago, 

was charged Aug. 5 with 

felony retail theft after she 

allegedly tried to take nine 

cosmetics items valued at a 

total of $296 from a department 

store at Orland Square. 

She reportedly concealed the 

merchandise in a bag and 

tried to leave the store before 

she was stopped. She reportedly 

has two prior charges 

and convictions for larceny, 

which led to the felony 

charge, police said. 

Aug. 6 

• Troy A. Jozsa, 25, of 7625 

Wheeler Drive in Orland 

Park, was charged with leaving 

the scene of an accident, 

failure to reduce speed to 

avoid an accident and improper 

lane usage after he 

allegedly knocked over a 

mailbox while driving a 

2013 Infiniti G37 in the 7600 

block of Cashew Drive. The 

registration on the vehicle 

led to Jozsa’s residence, 

police said. He reportedly 

left no identification for the 

homeowner of the mailbox, 

which was valued at $250, 

police added. 

Aug. 5 

• Lisa M. Garcia, 44, of 9023 

Lunar Court in Orland Park, 

was charged with unlawful 

possession of a controlled 

substance after police reportedly 

found a bag containing 

heroin concealed near her 

chest outside Orland Square. 

A missing person report and 

an active arrest warrant were 

issued in Garcia’s name, and 

someone spotted her fleeing 

her residence, police said. 

She reportedly was located 

near a bus stop near the mall. 

The substance in the bag 

field tested positive for heroin, 

police said. A weight for 

the drug was not provided in 

the police report. The arrest 

warrant was from DuPage 

County for failure to appear 

on a retail theft charge. 

Aug. 2 

• DeMichael L. Burley, 19, 

of 13831 S. Illinois St. in 

Riverdale, and Laneah J. 

Hawkins, 18, of 88 E. 155th 

St. in Harvey, were each 

charged with one count of 

theft after they allegedly 

were found to be in possession 

of stolen merchandise 

from a store at Orland 

Square. The two reportedly 

were stopped in the parking 

lot. Burley had a backpack 

containing five stolen 

items, some still with theft 

detection sensors attached, 

valued at a total of $47.41, 

police said. Hawkins had 

two stolen items valued at a 

total of $27.98 concealed in 

her purse — one of them a 

T-shirt that still had a theftdetection 

sensor attached, 

police added. 

July 29 

• Jasmine S. Marin, 22, of 

3024 E. 98th St. in Chicago, 

was charged with one 

count of retail theft and three 

counts of theft after she allegedly 

tried to take four 

clothing items valued at a 

total of $166 from a department 

store at Orland Square 

Mall. Marin reportedly 

took the clothing to a fitting 

room, concealed the items in 

her purse and tried to leave 

the store. When she was 

stopped, an officer found her 

to be in possession of stolen 

items from three other 

stores, as well, police said. 

She reportedly had items 

valued at $202.59 from one 

store, $160.30 from another 

and $105.90 from the third.

Homer Harvest Days to present 

variety of vendors, historical 

demonstrations 

Homer Glen is to showcase a 

plethora of demonstrators, history 

exhibitors, musicians and more 

the second weekend of September, 

during the annual Homer Harvest 

Days. 

The event is to take place from 

11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 10, as well 

as 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 11, at the 

Trantina Farm, 15744 W. 151st St. 

in Homer Township. 

Admission and parking for the 

event are free. 

In addition to classic fair activities, 

like a petting zoo and pony 

rides, there will also be a few new 

exhibits. Ron Jones is to present 

wet plate photography from the 

Civil War era. 

Another new exhibit is to be 

courtesy of Russ Knaack and 

Shawn Borri, who are to present 

phonograph recordings. Newcomer 

Les Marszalek, an archaeological 

surveyor who has worked with 

the Illinois Department of Natural 

Resources, is to present artifacts 

from the area, describe the history 

of the area and assess artifacts 

visitors bring, describing how they 

may have been used and their values. 

Kevin Wood is to return as Abraham 

Lincoln, and the Civil War 

cannon demonstration, crafts for 

children and tomahawk throwing 

also are slated to entertain the 

crowds, along with many other 

vendors and demonstrators. 

The event committee is still 

seeking volunteers. Though the 

committee prefers volunteers contact 

them by Thursday, Sept. 8, the 

event can take volunteers the day 

of the event.

Tinley mourns death of former 

trustee 

Known for his dedication to public 

safety, Matthew J. Heffernan 

served nine years on the Tinley Park 

Village Board beginning in 1998, 

serving as a chairperson on numerous 

committees during his tenure. 

Heffernan, who also served in 

the United States Marine Corps 

during the Vietnam War, died Aug. 

18. He was 70 years old. 

In 1998, when Trustee Thomas 

DiBernardo vacated his seat, Heffernan 

was appointed to the Tinley 

Park Village Board. Heffernan 

went on to be elected to the position 

in 2001. 

“He was the common man; he 

was able to relate to most everyone,” 

former Tinley Park Mayor 

Ed Zabrocki said. 

“Matt was a dedicated public 

servant and a good person,” Mayor 

Dave Seaman added. 

In addition to chairing the Village’s 

Budget and Administration 

Committee, Heffernan was 

the chairman of the Public Safety 

Committee. Heffernan helped initiate 

the Tinley Park Seat Belt Ordinance 

and introduced legislation 

for fire departments to lend mutual 

aid when emergencies arise. 

In addition to his passion for 

public safety, Heffernan was a 

proud veteran. He served as cochairman 

of the Tinley Park Veterans 

Commission and helped initiate 

the Marine Corps Detachment 

1217 in Tinley Park. 

Heffernan also was instrumental 

in setting up Tinley’s Sister City 

Program with Mallow, Ireland, and 

was vice chairman of the Tinley 

Park Oktoberfest, chairman of the 

Oktoberfest Parade and an active 

member of St. Stephen Deacon and 

Martyr Church.

Foundation’s ninth annual outing to 

continue honoring NL native 

After eight straight years of successful 

outings, the morning of 

the ninth annual Martin J. Larson 

II Memorial Golf Outing Aug. 20 

looked as if the event was going to 

be in jeopardy. 

Torrential downpours hit New 

Lenox, showering The Sanctuary 

Golf Course – the host site of the 

outing. And Sharon Larson received 

calls regarding of the status 

of the event in the hours leading up 

to registration. 

Faced with the decision to send 

people home and come back for the 

dinner portion of the event, she and 

the event board members decided 

to let the show go on. 

The downpour subsided, and all 

the golfers at the sold-out event 

teed off on time, after hours of uncertainty. 

“It all worked out,” Larson said. 

“It turned out to be a great outing, 

actually.” 

Sharon’s goal when she, her husband, 

Dale, family and friends created 

the Martin J. Larson II Foundation 

was to donate $100,000 

after 10 years in service. 

It has exceeded that amount — 

after the foundation raised more 

than $29,000 at this year’s outing 

— and is closing on nearly tripling 

that goal as it heads into its 10th 

year. 

The event — which honors Sharon 

and Dale’s son, Martin, who 

died following a battle with lymphoma 

in 2006 — sold out all nine 

times, with roughly 40 foursomes 

every year. 

“These kind of things end after 

a few years, maybe because people 

get tired of it,” Dale said of golf 

outings. “But everyone enjoys it. 

For me, it’s like being at a party. 

It’s a celebration of his life.”

OPPL hypocritical to ban 

new book 

I was troubled to read an 

article recently that alleged 

that the Orland Park Public 

Library was banning a new 

book that is critical of the library. 

To me, this sounds like 

censorship and also a violation 

of the library’s own intellectual 

freedom policy. I 

think it also goes against the 

spirit of Banned Books Week, 

which is an event that the 

OPPL participates in annually.

called “SHUT UP!: The Bizarre

requests were made from Orland 

Park residents asking the 

library to carry this book, and 

I am personally aware of at 

least one library cardholder 

who has persistently asked 

the library to carry the book. 

The OPPL has refused to allow 

the book into its collection, 

despite offers to donate 

a copy of the book to the library 

and demonstrated community 

interest in the book. 

Since the book is carried 

by the Chicago Public Library 

and other libraries in 

the area, such as Tinley Park 

and Bellwood, I am left to 

assume that the staff at the 

OPPL has decided to engage 

in what I feel is viewpoint 

discrimination. “SHUT 

UP!” is a primary source account 

what transpired in our 

library in recent years, including 

reprints of incident 

reports and legal documents 

involved in complaints made 

against the library and its 

staff. The authors of “SHUT 

UP!” won several high-profile 

determinations against 

the library by the Attorney 

General and received court 

settlements. 

The residents of Orland 

Park deserve the opportunity 

to read this account of what 

went on in our library that led 

to the squandering of money 

on legal battles. In my opinion, 

library staff should not 

be able to ban a book from 

its shelves because they do 

not like the contents of the 

book or because it might 

embarrass them. In keeping 

“SHUT UP!” off its shelves, 

the OPPL feels like it is trying 

to keep the truth from 

taxpayers about what’s been 

going on in there.

policy.” The brief “Standards

include this sentence, “No 

library material shall be excluded 

because of the race, 

nationality, political or social 

views of the creator.” 

Despite requests from 

patrons that the book be 

carried and the Library being 

offered a free copy for 

the community to read, the 

OPPL has chosen again to 

silence critics and cover up 

sexual offenses. 

I see “Shut Up!” as a 

how-to book in dealing with 

runaway government entities.

I have been attending Orland 

Library Board meetings 

2 1/2 years but learned so 

much more from the pages of 

“Shut Up!” Fox and DuJan 

are dedicated and persistent in 

their fight for citizens’ rights 

in an era of Big Government. 

I do expect adherence to 

Village ordinances and State 

statutes in public buildings, 

merely common decency. I 

bought three books, keeping 

one for myself to highlight 

and make notes. Residents, 

we need to step up and speak 

out. Let’s put the “public” 

back into Orland Park Public 

Library!

The first day of school 

for Orland School 

District 135 has come 

and gone. We all are getting 

back into the swing of 

things with schedules and 

homework and that early 

morning bus. 

I always enjoy the first 

day of school. No, I am not 

happy the children are back 

in school. I fully enjoy summer 

break, with pajamas 

till noon. I do, however, 

love the first day of school 

fashions. 

The children carefully select 

that “first day of school 

outfit” — spending more 

time than any other day, 

even picture day, in hopes to 

make a good first impression 

on new teachers and 

friends they haven’t seen all 

summer. 

Here is what was trending 

at our bus stop this year. 

The boys are simple. 

Gym shoes absolutely and a 

variety of athletic shorts and 

T-shirts. I was shocked my 

12-year-old opted for some 

striped board shorts and a V- 

neck T-shirt over the usual 

Nike this or Under Armour 

that. 

I tried not to make a big 

deal about it, in hopes it 

would continue on Day 2. 

It did not. We’re back to 

athletic shorts and T-shirts

Combating social me-dia; or, Standing in line, Part II

I 

recently found myself 

standing in line in Chicago. 

The line was roughly oneand-a-half 

city blocks long. 

And it took roughly an hour 

and a half to get through it. 

Throughout my stint in said 

line, many passersby asked 

from their vehicles why the 

line existed, a few phrasing it 

in the way of “What are they 

giving away?” 

The answer was: nothing. 

A brewer who stepped 

out from a larger company 

to form an independent 

business and cultivated a 

following was releasing a 

one-day-only brew — John 

Laffler, Off Color and 

Barrel-Aged Dino S’mores, 

for the record — and people 

were waiting for the opportunity 

to buy it. (It was 

worth it.) 

But that people were 

waiting in line to reward 

someone for their work 

seemed perplexing to many.

what it leaves the audience 

and what it leaves him.

psyche? Burnham argues 

that in many ways it has 

turned everyone into a performer. 

Or maybe everyone 

already was aching to be a 

performer, both audience 

and celebrity at the same 

time, and social media was 

the stage built in response to 

white denim capris. A few 

had on little summer dresses. 

The one accessory they 

all had was a gigantic 

backpack, filled with every 

school supply required and 

then some. 

The children at our stop 

were all dressed very appropriately, 

and each little 

person was embracing a 

trend of some sort. I enjoyed 

all of their outfits, and 

I am happy to report once 

that desire. 

So where does that leave 

the professional performer? 

We live our lives in public, 

and we watch everyone 

else do the same. We are, 

in essence, performing/ 

chronicling/whatever on an 

international stage, as well 

as spectators to our friends 

all doing the same. 

It is, in many ways, selfcentered. 

And there is both 

good and bad that comes 

with it. 

On the one hand, we are 

open, connected. And we 

should, honestly, feel like 

what we have to say and 

what we do has value — the 

kind of value to be shared 

with the world. 

But with that comes 

the audacity to think that 

everyone else should care. 

It is easy to get lost in the 

“me” aspect of social media. 

Many are so caught up in 

the performances that are 

their daily lives that they 

stop paying attention to others. 

Who has the time? 

National tragedies simply 

become another opportunity 

to make the day about us 

and our feelings, but rarely 

are we out on the streets 

making a difference. Our 

condolences are too often 

simply another opportunity 

to remind others that we 

think we’re good people. 

We’re all “stars,” but stars 

again our bus stop is quite 

fashionable!

on Twitter, right? 

It seems like everyone 

has found a calling, a way 

to connect, via social media, 

and I think, just maybe, 

there is a real value to be 

found there. But it is hard 

not to think that everything 

else has somehow become 

devalued in the process.

Remembering the meaning of Labor Day 

The Rev. Michael Foley 

Our Lady of the Woods 

This weekend, our nation 

celebrates Labor 

Day. This is a holiday 

developed at the end of the 

19th century to honor those 

who labor. 

It owes its origin to the 

push of labor unions and 

the desire of the Grover 

Cleveland administration to 

dissuade workers from the 

socialism that was becoming 

increasingly popular. In its 

earliest days, it celebrated 

labor unions (which by the 

middle of the 20th century 

accounted for nearly 50 percent 

of American workers). 

Samuel Gompers, the 

head of the American 

Federation of Labor, wrote 

in 1898 that it would be a 

“day for which the toilers 

in past centuries looked 

forward, when their rights 

and wrongs would be discussed 

... that the workers 

of our day may not only lay 

down their tools of labor for 

a holiday, but upon which 

they may touch shoulders in 

marching phalanx and feel 

stronger for it.” 

Labor Day has come 

to mean much more and 

much less. It is seen as a 

well-deserved break, a long 

weekend to mark the end of 

summer. All who work, not 

just union members, benefit 

from the recognition. 

At the same time, it is a 

bit ironic that so many people 

who work on Labor Day 

in retail establishments lose 

the benefit for which this 

day was created. And, of 

course, union membership, 

especially in the private sector, 

is a significantly smaller 

percentage of employees. 

It is good to reflect on 

the value of our work. The 

church sees work as sharing 

in the creative power of 

God. If we bring love to 

what we do, a task may be 

transformed from a burden 

to an opportunity. 

In the “Pastoral Constitution 

on the Church in the 

Modern World,” a document 

of the Vatican Council in the 

1960s, it is written, “When 

men and women provide 

for themselves and their 

families in such a way as to 

be of service to their communities, 

they can rightly 

look upon their work as a 

prolongation of the work 

of the creator, a service to 

their fellow man, and their 

personal contribution to 

the fulfillment of human 

history.” 

More recently, the Rev. 

Rick Warren wrote of the 

“purpose-driven life.” We 

are not here only for ourselves. 

We must bring this 

sense of purpose into what 

we do. 

Before I entered the 

seminary, I worked in the 

Loop. Each morning, I took 

the CTA downtown and 

most mornings had the same 

driver. He knew his passengers, 

and they knew him. He 

greeted everyone. If a regular 

was not at the corner, he 

would look down the street 

to see if that individual was 

coming a bit late. He wished 

everyone a good day, as we 

alighted from the bus. 

I thought, at the time, that 

he had found his work as 

something that made a difference. 

He was not driving 

a bus. He was transporting 

people with a bus. This 

changed perspective made 

all the difference. 

Sadly, there are challenges, 

including unemployment, 

struggles over wages 

and benefits, and the fact 

that frequently people are 

treated like commodities 

by those that employ them. 

This is far from the promotion 

of human dignity. 

I recently came across a 

survey that indicated that the 

majority of us are not happy 

in our jobs. According to The 

Conference Board in 2014, 

only 42 percent of Americans 

liked their jobs, down 

from 61 percent in 1987. As 

a nation, we work harder, 

take less time off, and have 

less satisfaction in our labors 

than workers in many other 

countries. 

This Labor Day, perhaps 

we can reflect on how to 

find meaning and value in 

our labors.

Crescent Park wraps up its 2016 concert series 

Three more bands 

to play Sept. 4 at 

Orland’s Centennial

Hundreds of people recently 

took advantage of a 

beautiful late summer evening 

and attended the final 

concert of the season held at 

one of Orland Park’s newest 

recreational venues. 

Crescent Park — a fanshaped 

1-acre swath of grass 

nestled between the steel 

and concrete of the 143rd 

Street Metra station and the 

Ninety7Fifty on the Park development 

to the east, with 

a bandstand at its northwest 

end — is tailor-made to accommodate 

concerts. 

The park at the intersections 

of 142nd Street and 

Ravinia Avenue was populated 

Aug. 21 with people of 

all ages, who turned out to 

see the band 1976. 

Sitting in lawn chairs and 

on blankets, concertgoers 

dined on food and sipped 

beverages they brought in 

coolers, as they listened 

to the cover band perform 

popular 1970s-era hits by 

Fleetwood Mac, Thin Lizzy, 

Rod Stewart and Elton John, 

among other artists. 

Among those people who 

were enjoying the show under 

a sunny, blue evening sky 

— with temperatures pleasant 

but hinting of the coming 

autumn — were three generations 

of the Dabrowski 

family. All Orland Park residents, 

the group consisted of 

Mark and Jean, their daughter-in-law 

Julie, and Julie’s 

children Claire, 2 years old, 

and Paul, 8 months. 

“Well, ’70s Music is always 

good,” Jean laughed 

when asked about what

brought the family out to the 

show. “We’re trying to take 

advantage of the town we 

live in. We missed a couple 

of the other [concerts]; then 

I wrote this one down on 

the calendar and was like, 

‘We’ve got to get one in this 

summer.’” 

“We were in college during 

this era,” Mark added, 

referring to the ’70s rock 

emanating from the stage 

roughly 100 yards away. For 

the record, the Dabrowski 

couple met while attending 

Northern Illinois University 

during the 1970s. 

While little Paul slept 

comfortably in a stroller, his 

big sister happily consumed 

rainbow sherbet, provided 

free to concertgoers by Hudsonville 

Ice Cream. 

“It’s nice to get out and 

have free baby-sitting,” Julie 

Dabrowski said. “And it’s 

good to have some different, 

free activities.” 

A short walk away, along 

the perimeter of the park, 

Orland Park Mayor Dan 

Michael Whitten (back), of Orland Park, plays catch with his 

sister Megan. 

McLaughlin, his wife and 

several other family members 

chatted as they dined 

on sandwiches, salads, 

and chips and guacamole, 

with brownies for dessert. 

Like many people who attended 

the show, they had 

a cooler packed with food 

and drinks. 

“We’re trying to create 

events where people don’t 

have to leave Orland,” 

McLaughlin said about Orland’s 

concert series. “They 

don’t always have to go to 

Ravinia or Downtown Chicago 

or Oak Brook or wherever. 

So the last 10 years or 

so, we’ve been adding more 

and more events every year. 

“I was just sitting here, 

thinking how neat it is. I just 

saw a couple riding their 

bikes this way, a family riding 

their bikes that way, and 

all these people sitting here, 

walking around, listening to 

music. That’s what we wanted 

to create here.”

two-hour set scheduled to

When it comes to the bar at Harvest 

Room, owner Christ Sirigas 

makes no secret of the fact that he 

is partial toward his bourbon. 

“I do focus on the bourbon,” he 

said Aug. 24, during an interview 

at the restaurant. “It’s complex. It 

takes a long time to develop. In 

bourbon, you can really taste the 

craftsmanship in every sip.” 

While the Palos Heights spot is 

known predominantly as an inventive, 

family-friendly restaurant, it 

is obvious to the cocktail connoisseur 

that Sirigas pays his libations 

the same loving attention Harvest 

Room’s chefs give to sourcing 

quality ingredients. 

“We try to use local distilleries 

as much as possible,” Sirigas said. 

The drinks list is constantly 

changing under his stewardship, 

and it is simply his palate that 

drives most of those changes. 

“I know what I like — the tastes 

and the intricacies of the flavors,” 

Sirigas said of making his selections. 

“It’s just so many flavors and 

complexities. I have people coming 

in every day to [get me to] taste 

their spirits.” 

Many customers start with the 

specialty cocktails menu. And 

when Sirigas is asked for recommendations, 

he starts by asking a 

question of his own: What is the 

preferred spirit? 

For those looking for vodkabased 

drinks, for instance, Sirigas 

said he would steer customers in 

the direction of the Booty Collins 

($10) — a passion fruit green teaand 

damiana-infused vodka, with 

passion fruit juice, lemon verbena 

syrup and yohimbe extract — if it 

was not already the most popular 

drink on the menu. The key to its 

success is the work that goes into 

it, Sirigas said. 

“It’s passion fruit infused; we do 

that ourselves, in-house,” he said. 

“It’s complex. It takes a long time to 

develop. In bourbon, you can really taste 

the craftsmanship in every sip.”

“We spend so much time making 

these drinks, these syrups.” 

Instead, for customers open 

to trying something different, he 

points to the Dead Heat ($10) — 

a St. George Green Chile Vodka 

cocktail, with simple syrup and 

lime. 

“It’s a very particular drink,” Sirigas 

said. 

And if customers want bourbon 

but insist on getting it in a cocktail, 

Sirigas recommends The General 

($10), which is named after his 

wife and co-owner, Carri. That one 

takes beer-barrel bourbon and adds 

a lavender-honey syrup, then drops 

in Italian-made Luxardo maraschino 

cherries for good measure. 

“We have to keep them locked 

up in the kitchen, because people 

will steal them,” Sirigas said of the 

delectable cherries. 

But while the cocktails remain 

popular, with a spirit like bourbon 

— which Sirigas said ranges in 

flavor as much as pinot noir — he 

selects what will appear on Harvest 

Room’s list based on how the 

spirits stand on their own, whether 

served neat, with a splash of water 

or a single ice cube. 

“It’s a fun time to be involved in 

bourbon,” Sirigas said. “I’m excited 

to show people new flavors and 

bourbons. 

“On the whole, our spirits are 

gaining notoriety.” 

And while Harvest Room definitely 

carries some high-end selections 

for the more discerning 

enthusiast, most of the spirits 

it serves run between $8 

and $16. Sirigas noted he 

would like to get a full 

tasting program going in 

the future, but until then, 

he is happy to put together 

custom tastings for diners if 

he is behind the bar. 

How about some jam with 

that bourbon? 

After three-and-a-half years, 

Sirigas said Harvest Room is 

finding its footing. 

“We had a trial by fire, and 

it’s taken awhile ... but people 

love us,” he said. “The reviews 

are coming in great.” 

For much of that time, 

the restaurant’s management 

has run what it calls 

the Side Room — a special 

events space directly to 

the east in the same retail 

strip. And slowly picking 

up steam is a jam session 

that has started unfolding 

in that space on Monday 

evenings.

Is it an alcohol-infused breakfast 

at night, an appetizer, a late-night 

snack or a meal unto itself? 

Sirigas said he often gets those 

questions from customers who 

stop in after 5 p.m. on Fridays 

for Harvest Room’s Bourbon & 

Doughnuts event, which pairs three 

maple-bacon buttercream-frosted 

house doughnuts, fried in duck fat, 

served on a wooden board with 

an ever-changing house 

pick of 2.5 ounces of 

bourbon for $16.

Last season, I was injuryplagued, 

and I had strep 

throat, and I was put with a 

random partner to finish out 

the season strong, and we 

won conference.

working on during the 

offseason? 

In the offseason, I worked 

a lot on my serve. And my 

partner and I, we play aggressive 

doubles, so every 

ball we come up to the net 

and really put balls away. 

What do you like most 

about tennis? 

I like tennis, because you 

have to be really mentally 

tough. And if you’re feeling 

down, you have to bring 

yourself out of it. I play doubles, 

so I’m lucky enough to 

have a partner, so if I’m feeling 

down she can bring me 

back up, and vice versa. 

If you won the lottery, 

what would you buy 

first? 

I guess I would buy a 

car for my dad, because 

he wants a new car really 

badly. I would get him a ... 

He wants, like, a Pinto from 

back in the day. I think that’s 

a car, isn’t it? Yeah, he really 

wants one of those. 

Who is your favorite 

professional athlete? 

Novak Đoković, he’s the 

world’s No. 1 tennis player. 

He can be down, and he just 

comes back. He can fight 

through everything and 

gets every ball back and hit 

amazing shots all the time. 

What two items could 

you not live without?

because I’m a teenager in 

a technologically-driven

probably be food. I need

dream doubles partner? 

My doubles partner now is 

pretty great, Jasmine [Abunaim]. 

If it had to be a celebrity, 

I would want it to be Angelique 

Kerber. She’s also a 

lefty, and she just won the 

Australian Open, so she’d be 

fun to play with. 

What is your dream 

job? 

See, that’s tricky because 

I’m undecided. My dream 

job would probably be a 

dermatologist. I like to help 

people, and I don’t want to 

be the medical aspect of being 

a doctor — you know, 

cutting into people — but 

I want to be somewhat involved.

Eagles’ new coach plans to return squad to top-team status

Sandburg girls cross 

country has a new head 

coach, and his name is Tony 

Pena. 

Pena, a 1994 Bishop Mc- 

Namara graduate, played 

baseball there and then at 

Lewis University. He is a 

teacher in Consolidated 

High School District 230 at 

Stagg, and a distance coach 

on the girls track team there. 

He takes over an Eagles 

squad that won a regional 

this past fall but fell short in 

the sectional. 

In fact, since finishing 

second in the state in 2009 

— which capped a streak 

of 15 state appearances in 

16 seasons — Sandburg has 

qualified for state only once 

(2012). 

“There’s a history with 

Sandburg, and the girls are 

looking long-term,” Pena 

said. “Our goal is to rise to 

be one of those top teams 

in the sectional, because we 

know that they won’t fall 

back. 

“Early in the season, I 

think we have a good Top 

7 and a nice group even beyond 

that.” 

Sandburg certainly looked 

good in the SouthWest Suburban 

Conference preseason 

meet. Although it was not 

scored officially, the Eagles 

finished second with 54 

points. 

That was just behind Lincoln-Way 

Central (49 points) 

and ahead of third-place finisher 

and Blue Division rival 

Lockport Township (75). 

“We have a lot of potential, 

a lot of people who are 

motivated,” senior Casey 

Jensen said of this season’s 

Eagles squad. “We have a 

new coach who has great 

organization. He has a nice

“My time [in the preseason 

meet] was slower 

than I’d like, but I’ll get back 

up there. But as a team, I’m 

thrilled we had four runners 

in the Top 12.”

Girls Tennis 

Eagles hope returning skill can top uncertainty

It is a fact of life in amateur 

athletics: there will be 

turnover from year to year. 

Despite losing a great deal 

of the veteran presence on 

the Sandburg High School 

girls tennis team between 

this past season and the 2016 

campaign, though, the Eagles 

are confident that they 

will be able to repeat the 

successes they enjoyed this 

past season. 

In 2015, the team won 

sectional and sent top singles 

player Anna Loureiro — 

then only a freshman — and 

a doubles team to the Illinois 

High School Association 

state finals. 

“We had a pretty good 

season last year, I’d say,” 

said Stephanie Garoufalis, 

a senior and the returning 

member of the doubles team 

that qualified for state. 

But it still will not be easy 

for the team to replace all 

of the talented players who 

graduated. 

“We had about nine seniors 

last year, so it was definitely 

hard to lose them,” 

Garoufalis said. “We were 

very close with them.” 

Senior Jasmine Abunaim, 

another senior doubles player, 

added that none of this past 

year’s doubles teams came 

back whole for the 2016 season. 

As a result, the girls will 

have to get acquainted with 

new partners quickly. And 

there are plenty of players 

who are new to the program 

altogether, and will be asked 

to step into big roles. 

“This is the first time since 

I’ve been at Sandburg that 

I’ve brought up four freshman 

to start off,” head coach 

Brian Ostrander said. 

Although they lost a big 

chunk of this past year’s 

team to graduation, the Eagles 

will still have the leadership 

they need from the 

head coaching position. Ostrander 

is back for his 17th 

season of coaching tennis at 

Sandburg. 

In his time, Ostrander 

has seen some very talented 

teams and players come 

through the school. But 

things were a little different 

in Loureiro’s first season. 

“[Loureiro] really elevated 

our team right away,” Ostrander 

said. “To get a freshman 

who’s our No. 1 player 

right away makes everyone 

fall into a better position for 

us. 

Ostrander said he thinks 

that the experience players 

got last year should put them 

in a better position for the 

coming season. 

“We have some of the juniors 

that were here last year 

that got a taste of some higher 

positions,” he said. “So, 

if you look at it, this year is 

really set up for maybe even 

a better year than last year.” 

Ostrander is not alone in 

his lofty expectations for the 

season, despite the relative 

inexperience of the team. 

“We have a very young 

team,” Garoufalis said. “We 

have a lot of freshmen and 

sophomores coming up, so I 

think carrying that forward, 

kind of just to leave a legacy, 

[we] probably look for that 

conference title, look for that 

sectional title and get more 

state qualifiers.” 

“I’m very optimistic for 

sectionals,” Ostrander said. 

“I don’t know if we’re going 

to win the thing; all I know 

is we’re going to be a tough 

opponent.” 

The conference championship 

is likely to be a more 

difficult test for the Eagles. 

They have very difficult 

opponents in Homewood- 

Flossmoor and Lockport, 

which are two of the main 

reasons that Sandburg has 

been unable to win the conference 

in recent years. 

The Eagles recently had 

success against Homewood- 

Flossmoor for the first time 

in a long time. 

“We used to lose to H-F 

quite frequently, but last 

year we beat them for the 

first time in eight years, 

which is pretty good,” Garoufalis 

said. 

It has been tough sledding 

against Homewood-Flossmoor, 

but matches against 

Lockport have been backand-forth 

in recent years. 

“Lockport has been a little 

up in the air,” Garoufalis 

said. “We’re pretty evenly 

matched with them, so it’s 

always fun to play them and 

see what the result will be.” 

New class system to make 

state qualification harder 


After winning sectional 

and sending a doubles team 

and a singles player to state 

this past season, it will be 

no easy task to send more 

representatives at the end 

of this season. 

For the first time, the 

sectional tournament will 

be broken up by classes. 

There will be two divisions, 

Classes 1A and 2A, which 

are to be broken up based 

on school population. 

Given that Sandburg’s 

enrollment is greater than 

3,500 students, the Eagles 

will find themselves in Class 

2A. This will pit the Eagles 

against some of the tennis 

powerhouses in the state. 

“We have a lot of bigger 

schools in our sectional, 

which will make it harder 

to qualify for state,” said 

Stephanie Garoufalis, who 

was one of Sandburg’s 

state representatives last 

season. 

“We’re obviously a 2A 

school, so we’re going to be 

playing all the big schools 

with all the great players, 

and everyone knows that 

the same old schools are the 

same old ones that win tennis,” 

Sandburg coach Brian 

Ostrander said. 

Although Ostrander said 

he does not think the Eagles 

are quite at the level of being 

state powerhouses, he 

added that his team is one 

But if there is one intangible 

Sandburg has that their 

opponents may not, it is 

team unity. 

“What’s amazing about

“We’re getting to a point 

where we’re one of the best 

teams in the [southwest 

suburbs],” Ostrander said. 

But that does not guarantee 

the Eagles success. 

Because of the new classification, 

they will not know 

who their sectional competition 

will be or where 

it will be held until around 

Sept. 5. 

“That’s a big thing, because 

if we slide up north 

to Hinsdale, then we’re going 

to be going in there [underdogs]; 

if we stay around 

here, then we’re going to 

be one of the top ones,” Ostrander 

said. 

The road to getting there 

will be more difficult with 

the sectional tournament 

being shaken up, but Ostrander 

still is confident 

that he will have plenty of 

representatives at the IHSA 

state finals. 

“I wouldn’t be surprised 

if we got three of the four 

teams [to state],” he said. 

And regardless of the 

trials and tribulations that 

await the Eagles on the 

way, Ostrander set his expectations 

somewhere in 

the stratosphere. 

“They’re high expectations,” 

he said. “Winning 

sectional, winning conference, 

getting to state and 

really improving on state 

finishes.”

Girls Swimming 

Young Sandburg swimmers hoping to make up for recent grads 


As with any team entering 

a new season, the Sandburg 

High School girls swimming 

team lost some important 

members to graduation. 

Although some uncertainty 

accompanies that attrition, 

many of the Eagles that 

remain are well acquainted 

with the spotlight. After taking 

second place in both this 

past year’s conference and 

sectional championships, 

Sandburg girls swimming 

hopes to build on the experience 

and take home those 

titles in 2016. 

Many of the girls on the 

team were not around for 

the conference and sectional 

meets this past year. 

Head coach Anna McBride 

said she got a great freshman 

turnout, with 16 new 

members coming out for the 

team. 

Only five of the girls who 

swam sectional are back for 

the 2016 season, and three of 

them are juniors this year. 

“There’s a lot of spots for 

people to step up and fill new 

positions in terms of leadership, 

and also in terms of 

spots on lineups that maybe 

wouldn’t have been available 

to them in the past,” 

McBride said. 

The Eagles may not have a 

ton of experience in the pool, 

but they should not have any 

problems with team cohesion. 

“I think we bonded really 

well as a team and that we 

felt together,” junior Bella 

Wrobel said. “And even 

through the times that we 

didn’t do as well as we wanted, 

we still stayed together 

and made sure that everyone 

was happy about what they 

were doing and that they 

were trying as hard as they 

possibly could.”

Things are not going 

to be exactly the same in 

terms of the Sandburg girls 

swimming team’s competition 

within the conference. 

With the closure of Lincoln-Way 

North and the resulting 

consolidation of the 

Lincoln-Way schools, the 

Eagles will see some old 

competition at new schools. 

“Our conference is going 

to look a little different, 

though, with the changing 

of the Lincoln-Way 

schools” coach Anna Mc- 

Bride said. “I don’t know 

which swimmers are going 

to be at which schools this 

year.” 

But this development will 

not quell Sandburg’s desire 

to get back at the teams 

that kept the Eagles from 

Clare Lawlor’s. Lawlor, who 

was a state medalist this past 

season, competed mainly in 

the sprint freestyle events. 

Junior Madison Stuursma 

will be tasked with filling 

Lawlor’s spot in the lineup, 

as she will be competing in 

the sprint freestyle. 

“Clare Lawlor was a huge 

impact on our team” Stuursma 

said. “But now that she’s 

gone, we want to see what 

we can do without her.”

McBride said she may not 

know who will be swimming 

for which schools, but 

she does know she would 

like to avenge the conference 

and sectional runnerup 

finishes handed to the 

Eagles by Lincoln-Way 

East and Lockport, respectively. 

“They were both really 

close meets,” McBride said. 

“We have a pretty young 

team, so I think that’s a motivator 

for them, in terms of 

coming back. 

“Those would be our biggest 

local rivals.” 

The Eagles will have 

their chance at vengeance 

during the regular season, 

all within the span of 

a week. They are slated to 

meet East at home Oct. 6 

and visit Lockport Oct. 12.

there is still some work to be

She said she hoped that 

a couple of swimmers would 

step up and claim spots in 

the 500-yard freestyle. 

“That’s a little bit different 

of an event, being that it’s 

the longest event,” McBride 

said. “So, it helps when

sewn up, McBride knows she 

has the talent to compete. 

“We always, as a program, 

traditionally have had a goal 

of winning the conference 

meet, because it is a team 

meet,” she said. “That’s always 

been one of our goals. 

“It’s a very tough goal, but 

it’s very motivating for us.”

But the strong return to an 

old position for senior Collin 

Friedsam provided a silver 

lining. 

Friedsam completed 12- 

of-26 passes for 156 yards 

and two touchdowns, and 

made big plays in the wake 

of Brucki’s injury to help the 

Eagles rally from a 21-0 deficit 

to close the score to 21-14 

at halftime. 

“Patrick’s our leader, the 

heart of this team,” Friedsam 

said. “We knew we all had to 

step up.” 

A quarterback throughout 

his playing career, Friedsam 

(6-foot-3, 190 pounds) shifted 

to tight end this past fall. 

“Collin’s a good athlete,” 

Sandburg coach Scott Peters 

said. “We had a two-year 

starter at quarterback, and 

we couldn’t just have Collin 

sit on the bench, so we found 

another spot for him. 

“He’s a good kid, and he 

works hard. He’s going to be 

a good quarterback.” 

Friedsam showed big 

signs of that in the second 

quarter, with his team reeling 

from both the loss of 

Brucki and a 21-0 deficit. 

Friedsam’s 37-yard pass to 

Jamare Parker down the left 

sideline ignited the comeback, 

and Friedsam followed 

with a clutch 12-yard pass to 

Ayo Abiona on fourth down 

and 10 yards to the Naperville 

North 26-yard line. 

The next play, Friedsam 

hit Parker deep left with a 

26-yard touchdown pass to 

make the score 21-7. 

The ensuing kickoff added 

fuel to the momentum, as 

John Murphy’s fumble recovery 

gave the Eagles the 

ball right back at the Huskies’ 

34-yard line. 

Friedsam again showed 

poise, rolling away from 

pressure on fourth-and-4, 

with 1 minute and 2 seconds 

left in the half, to hit Abiona 

for a 17-yard touchdown 

pass in the front of the end 

zone to send Sandburg into 

the break with only a sevenpoint 

deficit. 

“Our offense looked really 

good,” Friedsam said. “We 

were driving the ball. We 

had momentum. Then, in the 

second half, we just came 

out flat and had execution 

problems. We’ll be all right,

though. We’ll come out next 

week ready to get it done.” 

Naperville North turned 

the tide for good at an unlikely 

time — after a Jared 

Monnett punt rolled dead at 

the 1-yard line. 

The Huskies went 99 

yards on six plays to take a 

28-14 lead, sparked by runs 

of seven and 51 yards to 

open the drive. 

Despite another Sandburg 

drive to the Naperville North 

44-yard line on its next possession 

— featuring a 16-yard 

pass from Friedsam to Grant 

Glover — the Huskies added 

scores on their next two possessions 

to take command. 

“It was good to see them 

respond and get back in the 

game,” Peters said of his 

team’s second-quarter rally. 

”But at the end of the day, 

Sandburg quarterback Collin Friedsam fires a pass under

[Naperville North was] the 

better team and physically 

were taking it to us a little 

bit. That was the tone on 

both sides of the ball.” 

Losing the talents and 

hard-hitting aggressiveness 

of Brucki did not help. He 

was injured on a Naperville 

North running play in the 

second quarter and spent the 

rest of the night on crutches, 

with a heavily wrapped leg 

just above the right ankle. 

“He’s a guy that we count 

on, on both sides of the 

ball,” Peters said. “That’s 

obviously a big blow to the 

team, but hopefully he’ll be 

all right. And if not, we need 

somebody else to step up.” 

Players like Friedsam already 

have shown versatility 

and drive to help the team 

wherever needed. Pulling together 

for next week’s trip to 

Lincoln-Way Central is just 

the latest test. 

“We’ve always had a 

tough time with them, so 

there’s definitely some revenge 

from a lot of our 

seniors,” Friedsam said. 

“We’re going to work extra 

hard to get that ‘W’ in our 

last year against them.” 

As for his 2016 debut, 

Friedsam was happy to be 

back at quarterback. 

“I’ve been playing quarterback 

my whole life, so I’ve 

still got it in me,” he said. “I 

absolutely love leading the 

offense and being the leader. 

This is the best game, stepping 

out here on Friday night. 

There’s nothing better.” 

Friedsam sees much more 

potential for himself and the 

Eagles. 

“I think I could have performed 

a little better,” he 

said. “But it’s only Week 1, 

so all of our guys are going 

to be more comfortable as it 

goes. We’re going to work 

even harder this week, and 

we’ll be all right next week.” 

Coming off his varsity 

head coaching debut, after 

serving on Sandburg’s sophomore 

staff this past fall, Peters 

also is looking forward. 

“We’ll challenge the kids 

to bounce back,” Peters said. 

“You’re going to go through 

ups and downs and adversity, 

and it’s how you respond that’s 

the character we’re looking 

for. We have another tough 

game next week. There’s no 

time to dwell on it.”

John O’Malley, the Eagles 

are not out to defend their 

Class 3A state title from last 

year; they are building for 

this season. 

“There is no defense,” 

O’Malley said. “We feel like 

we’re building, not defending. 

If you feel like you’re 

defending, you’re in the 

wrong mindset. We’ve got 

to be in a building mode. No 

one has won anything yet.” 

While this is true, the Eagles 

would have easily won 

the SouthWest Suburban 

Conference preseason meet, 

which was held Aug. 23 at 


The meet was not scored 

officially, but if it were, 

Sandburg (27 points) — 

which had four of the top 

six finishers — would have 

won. 

Lincoln-Way East (77) 

was second, and Lincoln- 

Way West (96) placed third. 

Sandburg has captured 

the conference crown every 

year except 2009 — when 

Lockport Township won it 

— since the league formed 

in 2005. 

So, at least in terms of 

the SWSC Conference, the 

Eagles looked to be in good

spot to start the season. But 

in terms of being a state contender, 

that is still a long way 

to go. 

“Martin Skucas is the only 

guy we have back from last 

season’s Top 7,” O’Malley 

said. “This is the least 

amount of talent we’ve had 

coming back in some time. 

So we have to work really 

hard.” 

The guys are ready to do 

that. In the SWSC preseason 

meet, junior Dylan Jacobs 

won with a time of 15 minutes 

and 22.1 seconds. Skucas 

(15:48.6) was second. 

“It definitely felt good,” 

Jacobs said of being the top 

finisher. “We lost a lot of 

great runners, but we have 

a lot of guys stepping up. 

We don’t have that experience 

from the state meet, but 

I think we can run well this 

year.” 

So does Skucas, who said 

he wants to take the experience 

of being among the 

top runners this past fall and 

build upon it. 

“I ran with all the legends 

of Sandburg, the guys that 

broke through and made it 

happen,” he said. “Last year, 

we knew what we had to do 

from experience. This year, 

we don’t have the returners. 

So, my job is definitely getting 

the young guys to know 

what it’s like to be a part of 

the team.” 

Skucas also noted that the 

team’s gap between its Top 5 

runners was not big last year. 

That’s something the Eagles 

will have to work on this 

season if they once again 

hope to have state success.

Top 7 times at the preseason 

meet were senior

16:17.4), junior Robbie 

Sieczkowski (6th, 16:21.7),

“The gap we had between 

the first runner and the fifth 

was too big,” O’Malley said 

of the preseason results. “It 

was over a minute-and-ahalf, 

and you’d get carved 

up at state with that. We will 

be tested [at 10:30 am. Saturday, 

Sept. 3] at the Lyons 

Invite. Lyons is one of the 

top teams in the nation.”
