SOME OF THE BEST
PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS IN
HISTORY
As election day is not too far away in Saint Paul, many candidates are making posters, slogans, and
even stickers! Some are also using social media, it seems, to increase their chances of being elected.
In history, many presidents did the same and raised awareness using campaigns to spread their
message.
The 1960 election was one of the closest elections in American history. The
Kennedy vs. Nixon election is seen as the idolized Democrat against the brooding
figure of Eisenhower’s former vice president. Both Nixon and Kennedy had
significant campaigns using slogans such as “A time for greatness 1960” by
Kennedy, and “For peace and prosperity” by Nixon. The significance of this
campaign is that it was the first time candidates debated on television, and this
allowed the citizens to get a better grasp of what each candidate would bring to
the country. Kennedy also was the youngest president to be elected. During his
campaign he used this youth to his advantage. He used the words someone who is
“old enough to know and young enough to do.” Using potential disadvantages as
favorable traits and showing on live television that he was confident in his doings,
Kennedy was able to overcome Nixon and the Republicans.
Another impactful presidential campaign happened during the Reagan
vs. Mondale election in 1984. Using a television advertisement known
as “It’s morning in America again,” Ronald Reagan showed the daily
lives in America and suggested that he had restored America from
devastating unemployment and huge amounts of inflation. President
Reagan also used the slogan “Let’s make America Great Again”
charming the citizens and making them believe in him and his
Republican party. (This slogan is also currently being used by Donald
Trump, a current presidential candidate, which shows how great
Reagan’s campaign was.) The election ended in a landslide with
Reagan taking 98% of the electoral votes.
These were some of the best presidential campaigns in American
history. All of the candidates were great leaders as well as speakers.
However campaigns were able to raise awareness and create a certain “trend” for the candidate. In
Saint Paul, many of the candidates are creating posters, slogans, and more to increase awareness.
They all have yet to make a speech, but let us look forward to what they will bring to the table to
become respected leaders of Saint Paul Preparatory Seoul.
WELCOME TO SPPS MR. LARSON!
Beethoven. In all of history, there is no greater
genius in music than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
You listen to his music and not one single note could
be improved upon. I love the music of Ludwig van
Beethoven because of the raw emotions that were
put onto paper. Unlike Mozart, Beethoven would
scratch out entire passages over and over until he
felt it was exactly what he wanted. Even then, there
are examples of Beethoven rewriting sections of
pieces that had been completed many years earlier.
That being said, I also like pop music like Coldplay,
Bruno Mars, or The Weekend.
Why did you go into teaching?
Mr. Brad Larson is our new teacher teaching Music
Ensemble, Music History & LTP.
Why did you delve into music?
I have always loved music, and grew up in a family
where everyone played an instrument. I saw an
orchestra concert when I was six years old and
immediately knew that I wanted to play the violin. I
have been playing ever since.
I love to teach! My joy is in helping students achieve
what they never thought they would be able to. I
want my students to set goals that are just beyond
what they think they can do, and we will work
together to exceed even those goals.
How would you describe your teaching style?
I teach in a non-judgmental style. I encourage
students to push their boundaries and make
mistakes. We often learn more when we make
mistakes than if we do things correctly every time. I
also want my students to have as much information
about a subject as possible. The more information
we have, the better decision we can make.
Why violin?
When I was 6, I think, I chose it because it was the
instrument right at the front, and everyone can see
you. However, over time I have come to love how it
sounds and the possibilities that are available to a
violinist. Music written for violin is oftentimes very
sweet and melodic, but there are also a lot of times
where a violinist can play with a lot of fire!
What is the music piece of your life and why?
Although I don’t have a piece that represents my life,
two of my favorite composers are Mozart and
THE ROAD TO “KISAC”
http://kisac2013.weebly.com/st-pauls.html
Who doesn’t love sport? Sport is an interactive
device that encourages the harmony and unity of
a group. Especially when it comes to
interscholastic “high-school sports league,” the
entire squad of students turn into ardent sports
fans.
As of 2016, Saint Paul officially joined as a
competing member of “KISAC” (Korea
International Schools Activities Conference).
KISAC has designed interscholastic competitions
for all students at both the middle school and
high school levels. It is a structured sporting
framework for present and all future schools
within the region. KISAC’s mission is to
encourage the young athletes to learn
sportsmanship through experience by playing
sport against local and national schools
throughout Korea.
To break it down, KISAC league consists of about
15 different international schools located in
Korea including the following various schools:
BIS Canada, BIFS (Busan International Foreign
School), Chadwick, Centennial Christian School,
NLCS (North London Collegiate School), etc. Due
to the regional distance, most of the friendly
matches take place within the region for
convenience. For example, St. Paul is likely to
have a basketball match against Dulwich College
School because both schools are located near to
each other at Seoul, Banpo-dong. The game
schedule must be notified and confirmed by the
principal of both school, and the official coach of
each team is obliged to attend the game as well.
Occasionally, KISAC tournaments take place in
which all the member schools are permitted to
participate with the approval from the hosting
school. The KISAC Baksetball tournament hosted
by NLCS Jeju in 2014 is a great example of how
the interscholastic sport event is interactively
operated. More than half of the total of 8 school
participants gathered on the island of Jeju for the
first ever held athletic competition in the league.
These teams not only competed to win the title,
but also received elite basketball training
provided by the organization. All the team
coaches took turns to teach the fundamental
skills and basketball knowledge for each team.
Saint Paul is perhaps the only newly registered
school in KISAC this year. The upcoming season
is the first regular season for all major team
sports including: Boy/Girl Basketball, Soccer,
and Volleyball. Although we are the “rookie,” our
varsity teams are fully capable of competing
with the other teams. In fact, both the basketball
(vs SSI: Won) and soccer (vs SSI: Draw) teams
did not lose any friendly matches against the
varsity teams that had already certified their
abilities in the league. Last but not least, all of
our students must passionately support and
respect the teams to hear some good news from
our school’s pride, the varsity teams.
THE TRUTH BEHIND JUICY
http://m.mt.co.kr/renew/view.html?no=2015121718211766230#imadnews
In today’s world, where most countries are
experiencing economic recession, the price of a
product seems to be the determining factor of
what to buy. Under such circumstances,
businesses that focus on minimizing the prices
of their products tend to flourish.
We are all too familiar with Daiso, Juicy, etc.,
businesses that make consumers feel superior
and capable by lowering the prices of their
provided goods and services. Consumers
automatically think that they are benefitting if
the quantity of the product they are purchasing
is proportionally greater than the price they
have to pay for it. Such a line of thinking leads
them to make unhealthy choices like drinking
Juicy.
Juicy, originally from South Korea, is a fruit juice
and smoothie franchise. It had originally
received praise from a plethora of consumers
who initially favored the company for its ability
to provide healthy, fresh drinks at low-costs.
Recently, however, it has become an unhealthy
business.
Although it proudly presents itself as an honest
player in the fruit drink industry, Juicy has been
found to be the exact opposite. The sizes of the
drinks are the first issue. First of all, per Juicy’s
labeling, its XL size drinks are supposed to be
close to 1 L. They have been found to be only
600 mL nowhere near the benchmark. Moreover,
the company’s claim that its drinks are healthy
has been challenged and debunked as well. It has
been found that the natural amount of sugar that
an average mL-size Juicy smoothie contains
equals 21 blocks of lump sugar.
Juicy, despite such controversy, avoided making
clear and official statements. It has, however,
tried to cry innocent by duplicitously claiming
that the sugar in Juicy drinks is technically
natural, and therefore, they did not lie to its
customers. Had it not been for the efforts of
various broadcasting sectors, South Korea may
have not known the truth behind the low-cost
drinks from Juicy.
While the consumers may have been paying less,
they were also manipulated and cheated. What’s
more disturbing is the fact that people are, even
after controversy regarding Juicy surfaced, still
choosing Juicy over many other smoothie and
cafe franchises. Such a phenomenon is a good
depiction of the struggles that many low and
middle class citizens in South Korea face.
Can we truly blame Juicy when it is meeting the
demands of so many people?
Aren’t we all, at the end of the day, profitmaximizers?
APPLE, ARE YOU DOING THE
RIGHT THING?
Rumor: Apple plans to eliminate headphone ports from their products
Everyone loves to listen to music.
90% of underground passengers in
Seoul wear earphones. It is no doubt
that every portable device has a
headphone jack these days. However,
there is a rumor that Apple will
remove headphone ports from their
products. Apple is well-known for
eliminating external ports; they were
the first company to remove CD-ROM,
SD Card, USB, and HDMI ports from
their products. But headphone jacks?
Seriously?
“To support better quality
headphones”
Yes. Eliminating 3.5 millimeter headphone port
will force headphone manufacturers to make
better quality headphones. MFI, Made for
iPhone Certification, provides strict guidelines,
forcing the manufacturers to follow Apple’s
guidelines and improve the quality. However,
this will eventually increase price for
headphones. MFI suggests the manufacturers to
include DAC, digital-to-analog converter. This
forces them to implement circuits in their
http://i4.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article8343911.ece/ALTERNAT
ES/s615b/iPhone-7-space-black-rendering.jpg
products. DAC is not a cost-efficient component.
Who would buy a bundle headphone for 200
dollars?
“To make it convenient”
They argue that customers do not need to be
bothered with tangled earphones. That applies
only when the customers still have their
earphones with them.
http://cdn.cultofmac.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/CfC3jDJVAAA6ItC-large_transvcbZMXXvCpvwlOvyIj3Ike2feBgKGEnMkrvBk8X43w.jpg
This small earphone is about one centimeter.
Since it is too small, users are likely to lose them.
It is good to have wireless earphones, but I
would be more bothered with looking for the
pieces than untangling the wires.
There are going to be solutions as we always
create. However, it will be chaotic if Apple really
releases the next generation iPhone without a
3.5-mm headphone jack. Let us see what will
happen at the Apple Special Event on September,
MAKE A WISH
It’s been a year since the Saint Paul Preparatory Seoul’s Global Service Club began sponsoring the
Make-A-Wish Foundation Korea, but it seems that not many students are aware of what the
foundation is about or how it was founded.
The Foundation was formed in 1980 when a
seven-year-old child named Chris Greicius
had leukemia. It was almost certain that he
wouldn’t be able to stay in this world for a
long time, but he had a small but majestic
dream: to catch bad guys as a police officer.
Luckily for him, his mom’s friend’s husband,
Tommy Austin, was an U.S. Customs Agent,
who was more than willing to help Chris.
Unable to do it by himself, Austin asked Ron
Cox, an Arizona Department of Public Safety
Officer, for assistance to help Chris Greicius.
Cox passed on the story to DPS spokesman
Allan Schmidt and DPS Director Ralph
Milstead. Touched by the story, Schmidt
recruited officers, namely Frank Shankwitz
and Jim Eaves, for their patrol cars,
motorcycle, and helicopter.
On April 29th, 1980, Chris Greicius became
Arizona’s first ever honorary officer, with his
“Smokey Bear” hat and badges. 4 days later,
Chris Greicius passed away beside many gifts
from DPS agents.
After Chris’ death, Shankwitz talked to Kathy Morris, a DPS officer’s wife, about creating an
organization that would help children like Chris achieve their dreams.
“We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human
experience with hope, strength and joy.”
-Make-A-Wish Foundation-
This was the start of the Make-A-Wish Foundation: the foundation that helps children with
incurable diseases so as to realize the dreams of children like Chris Greicius.
A NEW LIFE WITH LOVE
Have you heard of The Korea Heart Foundation?
This foundation is dedicated to providing a happy and healthy life for the patients who are suffering
from heart diseases but cannot afford medical treatment by helping and providing them with various
medical services.
Once a heart disease patient, I will advertise this foundation during this week by opening a small
booth on the first floor. Lots of leaflets and brochures are prepared, so please visit this booth.
