Our Most Wonderful Day of the Year:
Norwood Day!
Many may feel the summertime
blues when Labor
Day rolls around, but here in
Norwood, that end of summer
trademark can only mean
one thing: Norwood Day will
soon be here! It's a great scene
to take in as downtown Norwood
and the Town Common
are transformed into a celebratory
community festival filled
with live, local entertainment,
games, sporting events, kiddie
rides, crafters, food bites from
local restaurants, sidewalk sales,
business and non-profit groups
and town department displays.
The festivities are actually
launched the evening before,
Friday, September 9, with a
fireworks display at the Coakley
Middle School. Beginning at
6:30 p.m. and before the Norwood
skies light up, however,
Radio Disney will be there directing
games, prizes and more!
A roaming railroad will also be
available with rides around the
new walking path (don't forget
to bring your button for admission).
On Saturday, September
beginning at the Morrill Memorial
Library with the marching
bands and fall sports teams
from Norwood High School
proudly strutting their school
colors and proudly entertaining
spectators. The parade will
Community Garden:
A Recipe for Hope
By Donna Lane
I wish I could say Norwood’s
Community Garden was a magical
place. But it’s not. It is rife with
weeds. The sun beats down on
the land and there are no trees or
shelter from its brutal rays. Insects
abound and we match wits with
critters every day. What I can say
with certainty is that the Community
Garden is a place of hope. A
place where charity and generosity
abound. A place where vegetables
from many cultures are sown and
reaped, and sustainability is the
tune that’s on our top 10.
Perhaps I’m getting ahead of
myself. A little history might be
in order. The gardens have only
been at Endean field for five years.
Most of us never thought about
starting one, because many of us
had our own gardens. But there
was someone who thought about
sustainability and environmental
matters every day. Someone who
wondered what our impact was
on the earth … and how we were
draining our world’s resources.
Someone who pondered what
the impact of GMO’s (genetically
be on our health. Someone who,
with two like-minded gentlemen
(Vic Babel and George Michalec),
started the non-profit sustainability
organization TogetherYes!. That
someone was Susan Clare.
It struck Susan that we did not
have a community garden. She
wished that we did. But wishing
doesn’t get things done, so she set
out to make it happen. “It was the
blind leading the blind,” she said.
“I knew nothing about gardening
and even less about running
a community garden.” But she
forged on.
She visited other community
gardens in the area. Then she
approached Town officials who
were supportive of the idea. An
find potential locations identified
land at Endean as the best spot
for a garden. The Endean parcel
was conservation land, so she also
had to bring the Conservation
Commission on board. With the
directive that the garden must be
totally organic, that no wildlife be
harmed and that no permanent
structures be erected, the Conservation
Commission gave their
blessing and the Town put aside
one-quarter acre for the garden.
Southbridge Farm donated
their heavy equipment and tilled
the pasture. The DPW laid out the
plots and the water lines, and three
local banks – Blue Hills, Dedham
Savings and Norwood Bank –
provided the funds for the initial
fencing. The garden was now underway,
and within a short period
of time all the plots were taken.
we had to expand,” Clare said.
"The Town doubled our space to
one-half acre, the maximum we
would be allowed."
Today, the TogetherYes! Community
Garden has 72 plots. And
there are 30 people on the waiting
list.
“It’s no longer the blind leading
the blind or a one-man show."
Clare said.
In its infancy, she had formed
an Advisory Committee whose
role the first year was to help her
make decisions from time to time.
Today, there are nine people who
serve on the committee who represent
a cross-section of the gardeners.
They handle policy and
administration of the garden.
Three master gardeners who are
also members of the Norwood
Evening Garden Club advise the
gardeners throughout the season
in all areas.
“We are truly grateful for their
expertise and knowledge and their
willingness to share that knowledge
with us,” Clare said.
Clare laments that her plot is
often the one with the most weeds
or the one least tended. But people
are very understanding and few in
the garden are judgmental.
“People who seek to join an organic
community tend to be good
people,” Clare said. “One of my
greatest pleasures is to see them
learn the joys of sustainability and
community.”
As I picked beans from her plot
(mine were not yet producing and
she is ever-generous) she said with
arms outstretched, “This is exciting!
Five years ago there was nothing
here. Now look at it!”
As one of the master gardener
advisers, I see some things differently.
I see the black swallowwort
climbing the fence and spreading
around the garden. I see the
poison ivy encroaching on my
plot that I can’t use chemicals to
control. I see an infestation of flea
beetles and another of squash beetles
that need everyone’s attention
lest we be overrun next year, and
I see an overabundance of weeds
in all of the paths that tend to be
forgotten as the season progresses.
I also think how lucky I am to be
part of this community, especially
because a woodchuck devoured
my home garden just a few weeks
ago.
When asked if she had a disappointment
or frustration with the
garden, Clare confessed.
“I wish more of Norwood
would ask, learn, and start urban
agriculture initiatives," Clare said.
"This one garden is not enough for
real sustainability, not by itself. It is
our first, and it may remain our
largest, but there should be smaller
common food gardens here and
there, wherever healthy soil can
be found. Someone with a yard
who can't garden for any reason
could share the produce grown
there with someone who could.
Apartment dwellers would benefit
greatly from such an arrangement.
I'd like to see more people keeping
chickens for eggs too. Now that the
researchers have decided that eggs
are good for us after all, I'd like
people to remind themselves that
not all eggs are created equal, just
as not all produce is. The taste and
nutritional value of organic, fresh
eggs and produce are well worth
the trouble.”
I watch as children help to hold
a hose to water the family’s plot.
Tending the garden is a family affair.
A learning opportunity. I see
a man helping to weed the paths
around his plot and picking up
piles of other people’s weeds as he
wends his way to the compost pile
outside the fence. And I see produce
piled on the gifting table that
will be brought to the Norwood
Food Pantry tomorrow. My neighbor
Gertrude offers me tomatoes
and turnips, knowing my garden is
late to produce. I give her a yellow
squash and show her what squash
nymphs look like before I destroy
them. Yesterday, Seamus came by
to return the canning jars I gave
him filled with jams to thank him
for giving me all of his green tomatoes
so I could make piccalilli
last season. In all of our efforts
to connect with the earth and to
share what we have grown, I see
hope.
Connecting with the source of
things is always a recipe for hope.
Wilson Jebarajmani
Wilson is from Southern India.
He has been in the United States
for six years working as an IT specialist.
He was on the waiting list
for two years before getting a spot
in the garden. In his 8x16 plot,
Wilson grows eggplant, beans,
beets, white radish, okra, cucumbers,
tomatoes and Amaranth.
Wilson picked a tender green
leaf from an Amaranth plant and
New England
gave me a recipe for its use: Take
a bunch of leaves, chop them up,
then boil them adding cumin and
fenugreek spices to the pot. Mix
it with rice and you have a tasty
meal, Indian style.
Marisa & Teresa Petrucci
Marisa is a 7th grade student
in Girl Scout Troop 81349 who
is new to gardening. Aided by her
mom Teresa, Marisa is growing
pumpkins, summer squash, peppers,
cucumbers and tomatoes as
a community service project. She
used her cookie money to buy
plants for her plot. All of the food
she grows will go to the Norwood
Food Pantry.
Sandy Travers
Sandy has been gardening for
about 30 years in raised beds and
pots. She has maintained a plot at
the Community Garden for four
years and says with a grin, “Tomatoes
that Vic Babel gave up his plot so
she could garden here. She loves
the Community Garden because
it allows her to interact with other
people. This year, Sandy is growing
8 varieties of tomatoes, which
she started from seed. That’s 16
plants plus a volunteer, some bush
beans, snap peas and dill. “The
amount I grow I could never use
myself,” Sandy says, “so I give
them away. People love the tomatoes
and it makes me feel good to
make them happy.”
Vivien Bouffard
Vivien is one of the master
gardeners who is called upon to
identify plant problems. She also
served on the Advisory Committee
for several years. Although
Vivien has a small garden at
home, she has virtually no full-sun
areas, so she was attracted to the
Community Garden by the prospects
of having more room for
vegetables and more sun, with the
added advantage of no groundhogs
(at least not yet!). “It’s fun to
meet people who are really interested
in growing food and to be
able to answer questions and help
in that way.” Vivien said. “And,
it’s awesome that we have a deer
fence and that the Town provides
water for us.” She does wish that
the plots were larger and that the
communal areas were less weedy.
(Something we really need to work
on!) Her plot is filled with potatoes,
sweet potatoes, pole beans,
peppers, cabbage, lettuce, carrots,
cucumbers and okra. At home
she grows lettuce, beans, kohlrabi,
cabbage, squash, tomatoes and
lots of flowers. She grows all of
her plants from seed.
Sheela was born in India, educated
as a general practice M.D.,
and moved to Norwood with her
M.D. husband. She is now a US
citizen. In addition to her master
gardener work, she does volunteer
work for the Norwood Food
Pantry, Meals-on-Wheels, Massachusetts
Horticultural Society
and is the incoming VP of the
Norwood Evening Garden Club.
She also teaches adult literacy for
the Norwood Library. Sheela has
a small garden at home; the only
place she gets sun is on a narrow
side slope, so the garden is difficult
to tend and very small. The Community
Garden was attractive to
her because she enjoys being with
other gardeners, learning and
sharing knowledge. She also likes
the fact that we can only grow organically.
“We get easy access to
water, the compost is great, and
the full sun exposure of the plots
results in amazing growth. And
the fenced-in garden is an absolute
blessing,” she said. Like Vivien,
me and a number of others, she
wishes there were fewer weeds
– especially the poison ivy – but
acknowledges it’s difficult controlling
weeds in open conservation
land. In her plot, she grows tomatoes,
peppers, eggplant, zucchini,
a variety of greens, onions, peas,
beans, cantaloupe and sunflowers.
in town, Turner followed in the
footsteps of his father, former
Deputy Chief Bill Turner Sr. Like
his father, colleagues said Turner
was both well-respected and
highly regarded among his peers.
“I admired him for being
a great firefighter,” Fire Capt.
George Morrice said. “He was a
guy I looked up to, and I know a
lot of the younger guys [on the department]
looked up to him, too.
He had a lot of knowledge.”
The skills Turner brought to
the department extended not
only to fighting fires, but also in
researching their origin. In 1988,
he was appointed fire investigator
of the department, and from then
on was responsible for determining
the cause of all fires within the
jurisdiction.
In this role, Turner acted as a
liaison between the department
and the state fire marshal’s office,
as well as the district attorney’s office.
Morrice said that although
the tools used to investigate fires
shifted over the years, Turner’s
ability to successfully fulfill his role
never wavered.
“His job was to look at how a
fire started, and whether it looked
malicious or criminal,” Morrice
said. “Over the years from when
he started, a lot of the technology
changed, but he knew how to use
the equipment. He worked with
the Norwood Police Department,
and knew that aspect of it as well.”
It was Turner’s insight and
know-how, Morrice said, that will
be missed most by members of the
department.
“There’s a lot to know on the
fire department,” Morrice said.
“Whether it was how to fight a
fire, or just how to be around the
station, he was the go-to guy for all
that type of information.”
In addition to his awareness of
the job, Morrice also stated that
Turner had an honorable moral
character that added a sense of
authenticity to his overall foresight.
“He was the guy who did
everything right, and he was a
leader,” he said. “He set the example
of how things should be.
He’s an honest guy, and he always
carried that over into the job.”
While Morrice stated Turner
will be deeply missed, he had
nothing but well wishes for him
during his retirement.
“I wish him the best of luck,”
Morrice said. “He has a bucket
list to see most of the country with
his wife, and I know he has a few
more stops he’d like to make. I
hope he enjoys it.”
I Am Strong Foundation Now Accepting Grant Applications
The IAM Strong Foundation,
which seeks to shatter the stigma
surrounding teen mental health
issues, is pleased to announce
the beginning of its Fall
grant cycle.
Grant applicants
must be
non-profit organizations
or
affiliated individuals
who
share a vision
that aligns with
the values and
mission of the IAM
Strong Foundation.
The IAM Strong Foundation
began in January of 2015 and
since its inception has made great
strides in opening the conversation
about adolescent mental health.
Last fall, the IAM Strong Foundation
presented An Evening With
Kevin Breel in Norwood, where
the nationally acclaimed
comedian and mental
health activist spoke
to a full house, and
a panel provided
a thoughtful and
honest discussion
about mental
health. Last
winter, the organization
sponsored
Messages For Hope,
where people of all ages
gathered at the Westwood Senior
Center to compose uplifting messages
for teens that struggle with
mental health issues. Hundreds
of uplifting cards were created.
The very first grant cycle for
the IAM Strong Foundation was
held in the fall of 2015, and grant
cycles have continued twice a
year since then. This past spring,
grants totaling $25,000 were
awarded to individuals and organizations.
These included a grant
for the Boston Arts Academy
High School to support mental
health services for its high school
age students, a grant for a multi
media platform project which will
explore autism awareness, destigmatization,
and services, a grant
for the Judge Baker Children’s
Center in Boston for comprehensive
assessments for youth at risk,
and a grant for the Norwood High
School TASC program, which
will expand opportunities in the
culinary arts, art therapy, and additional
coping skills for students
participating in the Therapeutic,
Academic, Supportive Classroom
program.
The IAM Strong Foundation
welcomes grant applications from
all local communities. All applications
must be received by October
1, 2016, and applicants will be
notified by November 1st. Grant
applications and details about the
grant process are available at www.
iamstrongfoundation.org. Email
grants@iamstrongfoundation.org
with any questions or requests for
further information.
“For our first experience in buying a home Bob Starr
definitely had us feel comfortable throughout the entire
time. We didn’t have any idea what to expect, but Bob took
us through it all; he was always available, he always took
the time to make sure that our questions were answered
and that we were comfortable. He is a very knowledgeable
man and we were impressed at his willingness to go
beyond what an agent normally would. I definitely would
recommend Bob Starr and look forward to working with
Norwood Piloting Lion Cub Program
by Bella Caggiano
Before this month, the 'Tigers'
were the youngest scouts engaged
in the Boy Scouts of America.
The Tigers were available for
boys entering the first grade, but
Norwood Pack 42 has been selected
to involve a younger demographic
into this popular club by
pioneering a new program aimed
to include kindergarteners. Welcome
in, the Lions!
"Our local Boy Scout Council
(Old Colony) has been chosen to
run a pilot program, before a nationwide
rollout, and Pack 42 is
among a select group, authorized
to recruit families for the pilot,"
Pack 42 Cubmaster Brian Palmateer
said.
The new 'Lion' program, is
tailored for boys ages 5-6 years
old, or kindergarteners. These
children can now participate in
a group that emphasizes character
development, leadership,
citizenship, and personal fitness
through engaging events and exciting
adventures! And to think,
Pack 42 Norwood is only one of
five troupes in the state chosen to
initiate the program!
A large component of the Cub
Scout mission is community involvement
and Pack 42 has been
committed to that endorsement,
in Norwood and beyond. They
replace flags on military graves,
collect for Toys for Tots, 'Scout
for Food,' and participate in many
local events and parades.
"We had a fun community service
event that brought a popular
children's book author to the
Norwood Theater, along with cub
scout families from 11 area towns,
and resulted in the donation of
hundreds of books and more than
$2k to Morrill Memorial Library,"
Palmateer said.
That fundraiser was a visit
to the Norwood Theatre from
'Wimpy Kid' author Jeff Kinney
Of course, there are many
renowned traditions that occur
throughout the year to enhance
their personal development, and
foster teamwork and, of course,
friendship. That includes the
pinewood derby, camping, crafts,
the rain gutter regatta, archery,
earning specialty badges and
many more!
How exciting that kindergarteners
can now join a group that
has made such a difference in
many young lives, and that Pack
42 and Norwood residents have
the opportunity to contribute to
this expansion!
Massage Away Those Pregnancy Aches and Pains
Expectant mothers receive
much joy throughout their pregnancies,
but those nine months
can also deliver many uncomfortable
days and sleepless nights.
Trained massage therapist, Paula
Flanagan, of Paula's Massage
Therapy, in Norwood, has personally
experienced the physical
discomforts of pregnancy, but she
is also equipped to alleviate those
stressors through her specialized
pre-natal massage training.
"When I was pregnant, it was
hard for me to find a massage
therapist who specialized in this
area when I needed it the most,"
Flanagan said. "I started working
for a maternity spa where the sole
clientele was pregnant, trying to
get pregnant or post partum and
was able to hone in on the skills to
treat that population."
This Norwood native has massaged
her clients throughout all
stages of their pregnancies, not
only with certified techniques, but
through an exceptionally comfortable
and safe environment. Her
office is equipped with a specially
designed hydraulic table that adjusts
to a semi-reclining position so
her pregnant clients do not have
to lie flat on their back. She also
uses three pillow support systems
to accommodate each tri-mester:
a body cushion for the first trimester,
a Preggo Pillow that allows
the client to lie on their belly into
her third tri-mester, and a memory
foam system which is more comfortable
than a bed and allows her
to lie on her side in the final weeks.
Contrary to some beliefs, pregnancy
massage does not induce
labor, but can assist in easing the
pain and discomfort throughout
all phases of the pregnancy.
"Most woman experience some
discomfort but don't understand
the benefits they could receive
to make their pregnancy more
enjoyable," Flanagan said. "Massage
therapists may offer pre-natal
massage but not have the extensive
training that went into my certification
or my three years focused
work with this population."
Paula's Massage Therapy also
offers many traditional massage
services and exceeds other businesses
by catering to each client's
individual needs and areas of
concern to ensure a deep relaxation
and healing experience. Her
techniques include Therapeutic
Massage, Swedish Massage, Deep
Tissue and Cupping.
Clients visit Paula's Massage
Therapy to alleviate many physical
tensions throughout the body
but also to target specific injuries
or muscles tension. Each treatment
is customized to the individual
and can include gliding,
kneading and cross-fiber friction,
but also more intense pressure to
focus on chronic muscle tension.
With today's hectic lifestyles,
most people are unaware of the
daily tension they carry in their
bodies. In just 60 minutes, Flanagan's
skills not only massage those
tensions away, she identifies areas
holding that stress or limitations of
motion. The body absorbs worry
in various areas, it takes the skilled
hands of a massage therapist to
soothe those muscles back into
their peak performance.
A complete fulfilling experience
is always the goal at Paula's
Massage Therapy and an essential
component is education and recovery.
Flanagan does not schedule
back to back appointments
which allows for ample recovery
time and answer any questions
her clients have to fulfill their
needs during the massage as well
as between visits. She also believes
her influence on good health is not
limited to the massage table and
will consult and address individual
issues, such as more comfortable
sleeping positions or general
health benefits.
"The best part of what I do is
help people live their lives more
fully," Flanagan said. "I can help
them figure out better ways to
sleep so their lower back does not
have any more pain. There is a lot
of conversation before and after
the service. They come to me with
aches and pains and I find ways to
help them live pain free."
Paula's Massage Therapy is located
in Norwood Center, 1 Walpole
St., (Rte. 1A), Suite 3, and is
open by appointment, Monday,
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,
Viola Sastavickas Scholarship
Awarded to Chloe Belanger
Joseph and Viola Sastavickas
and their children used the library
for many years. In the recent
years before Viola’s death, they received
service in their home from
the Outreach Department of the
library. When Mrs. Sastavickas
passed away in 2006, her children
made a generous donation to the
library to endow a perpetual $500
scholarship in memory of their
mother. According to her daughter,
Kathy Sastavickas, the scholarship
is “a fitting tribute to our
beautiful mother and to the library
and staff which treated her with
great respect and affection.” Over
recent years the Sastavickas family
has made additional donations to
the Sastavickas Scholarship Fund
to ensure that the scholarship
would be given to a deserving recipient.
This year marks ten years
of the annual scholarship award.
This year a committee reviewed
the applications submitted
and selected Chloe Belanger
to receive the Viola Sastavickas
Scholarship for the tenth year.
This committee included the
Board of Trustees, Cashman
Charlotte Canelli.
Chloe Belanger began working
with us a library page in 2014 and
she graduated from Blue Hills Regional
Technical High School as
valedictorian last month. She has
been accepted at Fitchburg State
University and will begin her studies
in Biology with a concentration
in Health Sciences. She plans to
become an optometrist and her
essay “Rediscovering the Joy of
Sight” was a beautiful and inspiring
additional to her scholarship
application. We know that Chloe
will be successful and this scholarship
is important in financing her
education.
Arthritis: A Natural Approach to Treatment
Arthritis is a common health
problem that affects over 20 million
people every year with distress
in the form of joint pain,
swelling and inflammation. Most
people treat their symptoms with
NSAIDS and analgesics for pain.
In addition, many sufferers change
their diet and exercise routine to
help to alleviate the discomfort.
Chiropractic care can be beneficial
as well.
Arthritis can be categorized
into degenerative or autoimmune.
These are known as Osteo, Rhuematoid
or Psoriatic. Osteoarthritis
is from “wear n tear” or degeneration.
Rhuematoid or Psoriatic are
autoimmune in nature.
There are many foods that
are considered inflammatory and
can affect one’s symptoms. These
include high fructose corn syrup,
processed sugars, saturated fats,
gluten and casein, aspartame, caffeine
and alcohol. These foods
trigger inflammatory messengers
called cytokines which can result
in pain.
Lisa P. visited the Holistic Center
at Bristol Square after suffering
with symptoms of arthritis for over
five years. Lisa’s joint pain in her
shoulders, neck and back were unrelenting
and prevented her from
sleeping and doing daily chores,
such as doing laundry, making her
bed, even loading the dishwasher.
Standing for long periods aggravates
the joints which affected her
ability to stand at the sink for long
periods of time.
After performing a comprehensive
exam and evaluating her
x-rays, Lisa P began a personalized
care program, which included
Chiropractic adjustments,
changes in her diet by excluding
wheat, dairy, refined sugars and
caffeine, as well as an exercise regimen
to support her health. Since
implementing these changes,
Lisa is now happily living her life,
performing her daily chores and
doing it all practically pain free.
If you are suffering from arthritis
symptoms and are looking to
improve your quality of life, contact
NORWOOD DAY
continued from page 1
chor with local bands and dance
groups performing throughout
the day while the town gazebo
lawn will serve as the second anchor
with the food tent, a petting
zoo, pony rides and games.
Norwood Day is a true endorsement
for the shared respect
and commitment of its residential
and business communities.
To celebrate the strength of its
collective loyalties, local restaurants
will be offering samples of
its diverse menus as a thank you
Norwood
for the continued patronage that
has made Norwood the unofficial
restaurant capital of the area.
Trolleys will also transport riders
to noteworthy locations throughout
town, including the police
and fire stations and Norwood
Airport where guests can enjoy a
new display of WWII bombers.
The entire communal party
will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
and for just $3 for a Norwood
Day button ($5 the day of the
event), entrance and participation
is free to all events. Buttons can
be purchased from any committee
member or at the Civic Center
on Nahatan St.
"The whole theory
behind it is that you
buy a button for $3
and you get into all
these things for free,"
Recreation Directory
Gerry Miller said. "We
make it as inexpensive as
possible and it works out well."
To help keep costs down and
in full demonstration as a town
who pulls together, Norwood
High School sports teams do
their part to contribute to the
day's success. The freshman football
team will help vendors set up
in the morning and the girls and
boys varsity and junior varsity
soccer teams will assist vendors
to break down their booths at the
end of the day.
Local business sponsors contribute
greatly financially to make
these combined events a success
and also deserve recognition and
future patronage from Norwood
residents: Dedham Savings, The
Gallery Automotive Group, Furlongs
Candies, Norwood Bank,
Comcast, Chestnut Hill Realty,
Lustra Cleaners and Jake N Joes
Sports Grille.
Norwood Day would also not
be possible without the countless
volunteers who donate their time
throughout the day giving directions,
selling buttons and ensuring
a smooth schedule for all.
Help is still needed and is welcome
for any time frame; even an
hour will allow another volunteer
to experience the event. For more
information, call the Civic Center
at 781-762-0466.
"The first year I asked Lee
Kennedy, 'how did you like Norwood
Day?' Miller said. "She
said, I don't know, I never left the
information booth. Since then, I
ask for volunteers so everyone can
enjoy the day."
According to Miller, attracts
approximately 15,000 visitors.
Many are from Norwood but
word has gotten out about grand
festival and residents from surrounding
communities cannot
resist supporting Norwood and
joining in on the fun! Norwood
Day has become a valuable opportunity
for local organizations
and merchants to meet their
neighbors and celebrate the spirit
of the town's communal and
philanthropic ideas and values.
Buy a button and join in the fun
and celebrations!

Athletes, Injuries and the Solution
Contributed by John
Vacovec, Physical Therapist
and CEO of Physical Therapy
and Sports Rehab, Inc.
Strains, sprains, pulled muscles
and even fractures are just some of
the possible injuries that can befall
recreational, amateur and professional
athletes. Sports injuries are
often exacerbated by the athlete’s
decision to “power through the
pain.” The injuries are often more
severe than those sustained at
home or work, requiring multiple
physical therapies and rehabilitation
techniques to restore full functionality
to the affected area.
Athletes are masters of precise
movements and control, but even
a slight variation or miscalculation
can result in an injury. Physical
therapists are experts in the
mechanics of the body and the
therapies that will best heal and
rehabilitate specific injuries.
Overuse injuries are also common,
and while they may initially
not appear to be severe in nature,
they can quickly transition into a
chronic condition if left untreated.
A sore joint from golfing, tennis,
swimming or pitching can result
in pain, neurological damage and
dysfunction that could remove an
athlete from play for an entire season
or derail a promising career.
Physical therapy techniques are
effective in treating and preventing
injuries and providing rehabilitation
following an injury or surgery.
Physical therapy provides pain relief
and management without rely
on prescription medications or invasive
methods.
The Best Laid Plans
Despite careful training and
appropriate precautions, an injury
can still occur, and that’s especially
true for youngsters and
recreational athletes. More than
1.35 million children participating
in sports programs will experience
a serious injury. Many recreational
athletes sustain injuries which
could have been avoided with sufficient
stretching and warm-up
exercises.
Each type of sports activity
carries its own unique risks for an
injury. Physical therapists can help
athletes of all ages with assessments
to determine areas of body
weakness and concern.
Therapies for Life
An injury requires immediate
attention and therapists provide
extensive expertise combined with
advanced technology designed to
ease pain, maintain mobility and
rehabilitate.
Techniques used may include:
• Resistance exercises, clinical
Pilates and yoga enhance balance,
coordination and endurance,
along with strength and
stability.
• Therapeutic massage aids in
pain management, relieves
inflammation and works with
the body’s own healing abilities.
• Gait assessments identify areas
of weakness and inefficiency.
• Aquatic therapy offers gentle
resistance for building
strength, endurance and stability.
Physical therapists help athletes
of all levels of ability in any sporting
endeavor reduce the risk of
injury, treat injuries that do occur,
and provide customized treatment
plans for the best recovery results.
If you need physical therapy, call
us directly and we can evaluate
your condition and begin treatment
right away. If additional
treatments are necessary, we can
coordinate with your MD. Your
recovery is our expertise! Physical
Veteran Appreciation Concert
Friday, September 16
Local rock band Partisan
Rancour invites the local
community to help honor
America's veterans. They will
be performing songs from their
recent CD “Parallel 33,” about
the experience of deploying to
war and returning home from a
personal, non-political perspective.
This haunting, classic-rock infused
album addresses issues common
to all who served: answering the
call to duty, serving in a combat
zone, the relationship and family
challenges of going to war, and
the process of reintegrating upon
returning home.
Featuring Norwood residents Thomas Steele(Desert Storm and Iraqi
Freedom veteran) and Sara Steele, with fellow band members Jeff
Hill(of Millis), Dan Massoffand David Sands (both of Newton).
Norwood Retired
Men's Club
Now Recruiting New Members!
Next Meeting: Tuesday September 13, 10 a.m., Norwood
Elks, 152 Winslow Ave.
There will be an election of new officers at the close of
the year and the organization in danger of ending the club, as
there has been a dearth of volunteers willing to take on any of
the responsibility of running the club and the present officers
refuse to give it another go.
You don’t have to be a Norwood resident but you must be
60 or older and retired or semi retired. The dues are $10 yearly
and there is no initiation or initiation fee. Just walk in and say
“Hello”.
The club has two breakfast meetings a year and two trips
a year, one in the summer and one in the winter, to which the
significant others are invited. There is a golf league that plays
at the Norwood Country Club on Thursday mornings with
scheduled tee times. There is also a Bocce league that plays on
Wednesday mornings at the Senior Center courts at 9:30 am.
Every league welcomes new members.
Norwood
Community Tennis
by Christopher Tremblay
In 2003, Norwood resident
and tennis advocate, John Ratto,
decided to develop the Norwood
Community Tennis Association
(NCTA). Ratto, a tennis pro and
instructor, personally did all the
leg work and made a small tennis
club into the NCTA, a non-profit
organization. Thirteen years later,
the program is going strong despite
Ratto’s stepping down as
president.
About three years ago Kathy
Keady took over the presidency
of NCTA and strives to continue
things the way Ratto did when
he got the Norwood program up
and running. The NCTA currently
puts forth a Mixed Doubles
Round Robin that runs from May
through October; a spring and fall
Women’s League as well as spring,
summer and fall clinics for children
between the ages of 7 and
12.
According to Keady, the group’s
biggest activity is the Mixed Doubles
Round Robin which runs for
months on Wednesday nights,
7-9 p.m., at the Coakley Middle
School tennis courts. The round
robin is very flexible in terms of
participating just as long as you
are a NCTA member.
“All you have to do is basically
show up and play," Keady said. "It
allows the community to be flexible
and play when they want to,
especially with the ebb and flow
of the summer and vacations.The
group was set up for the sole purpose
of tennis enthusiasts getting
together to play a sport they love,
while meeting new players.”
The program usually has all
four courts going at once so there
are usually 16 or so participants
on any given Wednesday night in
Norwood.
Unlike the come as you please
attitude of the mixed doubles, the
Women’s spring and fall leagues
are much more rigid. Women, 18
years of age and older, take part
in a league that runs for about two
months (The fall league starts just
after Labor Day and concludes
around Halloween). Women are
asked to commit to the league as
Keady and her staff have to develop
a weekly schedule pairings.
NCTA uses the registration
fees to pay for the tennis balls used
every Monday night throughout
the 8 week sessions. Like the
round robin program, the spring
and fall leagues are also played at
the Coakley Middle School.
“Through the years we have
been very lucky that the town of
Norwood has allowed us to continue
to use the tennis courts there;
all we have to do is work around
the high school tennis team’s
schedules,” Keady said. “We are
very grateful that John had such a
great relationship with the town.”
While Keady is busily handling
the Mixed Doubles and the Women’s
Leagues, NCTA Vice President
John Hsu is in charge of the
kids program, which usually runs
three sessions (Spring, Summer
and Fall). However, while in the
past the NCTA has run all three 6
week sessions April, July and September,
this year there will only be
Norwood Sports
two sessions. With the Summer
session starting late (early August),
there will be no fall session.
These children’s programs are
basically for beginners to get involved
in the sport.
“The clinics are for children
7-12 and will teach them beginning
tennis skills, like hitting a ball
and how to hold their racquet,”
Hsu said. “I’m hoping to install
the love of the game to them so
that they continue to play it as
teenagers and well into their adult
years.”
These clinics are also held at
the Coakley Tennis Courts (6-7:30
p.m., on Tuesday evenings) and at
press time there was a waiting list,
but for very specific reasons.
“We are limited to not only
the courts, but to the number of
volunteers we have,” Hsu said. “I
don’t want large groups with kids
just standing around. I prefer the
smaller groups where they can actually
get involved a longer time.”
Originally Hsu wanted to go
without charging a fee, but the
NCTA recommended that they
charge to keep people honest.
“The fee was put in to make
sure people were serious about
learning, not just signing up and
possibly going,” Hsu said.
As the Vice President continues
to provide the Norwood youth
with an introduction to tennis, he’s
hoping that they develop a shared
passion for the sport.
“This game has brought a lot
of joy to me as well as meeting
new people – I’m looking to pass
that along,” Hsu said. “There is
a decline in the game and I’d like
to bring it back. This is a game
that you can play until an old age.
There are not too many sports
that one can continue to play until
80 years of age.”
NHS Fall Sports Hoping for More Wins in 2016
When Norwood Athletic Director
Jon Longley returns to work
this fall, he’s probably going to
hope that his coaches have figured
out a way to improve upon last
season’s win total. The Mustangs
boasted nine teams last fall for a
combined 33 wins, 91 losses and 6
ties. The field hockey team was the
only fall sport at Norwood to post
an above .500 record going 13-4-
1; unfortunately they were upset
in the first round of the Division
1 South Tournament to Canton
2-1.
Going into last year’s campaign,
Doliner was unsure of what
she was going to get from her athletes
having lost a good number of
seniors the year prior and found
she had numerous holes to fill on
the field. Finishing second behind
Walpole in the Herger Division of
the Bay State League one could
say the coach filled those holes
quite nicely as the squad took to
heart the team’s motto “Earned
Not Given”.
Coming back this fall will be senior
Coley Hayes, who moved to
center halfback last season and became
the team’s defensive leader.
Casey Macdonald (11 goals, 6
assists) and Bryn Garczynski (14
goals, 3 assists) each found themselves
as the Mustang’s second
best scorer each tallying 17 points.
Other instrumental pieces returning
this year will be sophomore
Rose Campbell, the team’s left
back who continually improved
as the season went on and junior
Janelle Kelleher, who split time in
goal last fall with Beth Tobio. With
Tobio moving onto college, Kelleher
should be the team’s number
one goaltender.
Both the boys (2-9) and girls
(3-8) cross country teams improved
upon their single win from
the previous year. Coach Aimee
Worcester was rather pleased
with her team’s performances
despite having such small numbers
(11 girls and 22 boys) lining
up at the starting line each week.
Senior Fiona Jordan, who edged
out Chelsea Colbert’s old course
record by .02 by posting a time of
20.08, will be looked upon to continue
her dominance on the track
for the Mustangs. Senior Patrick
Forest and junior Craig Riley will
be looked upon to keep lowering
their times on the boy’s squad.
After finally qualifying to participate
in the State Tournament,
golf Coach Jim Sweeney’s team
took some giant steps backwards
last fall going 0-12. However, this
fall is a new season and with the
new season comes a new challenge
and the golf team would
like to move forward and once
again return to tournament status.
Senior Michael Saad, who will be
playing in his fourth season with
Norwood, should be the man to
carry this squad. Seniors Sean
Briggs and Owen Kelly, as well as
juniors Ryan Giffin and Declan
Tolman, will once again be patrolling
the greens for the Mustangs
this fall; sophomores Michael Curley,
Charlie Hanoian, John Cotter,
Chris Martin and Matt Hennessey
will all tee it up with a year of experience
under their belt.
The swimming/diving team
posted a 3-7 record in the pool
last fall. Coach Jennifer Rodger is
hoping that her numbers in terms
of athletes continues to rise giving
the team more flexibility. And although
the squad only managed
five wins, Rodger likes how the
swimmers posted a good number
of personal bests last fall.
Junior Gracie Gillis should be
back to swimming at high levels in
the 100 back stroke and the 200
freestyle. Other Norwood athletes
looking to help the Mustangs move
up the ranks are senior Brendan
Hurley (100 breast stroke), sophomore
Austin Reardon (50/100
freestyle), senior Elizabeth Wagner
(100 freestyle) and senior diver
Emerson Kearns.
The girls volleyball team had
the second highest win total last
fall for the Mustangs going 5-16 on
the courts despite losing Amanda
Springer, their best all around
player. Looking to take the lead
of many times by the
numerous small Fitzgeralds that
live in my house and consume
vast quantities of my food that
they are apparently physically
unable to clean up after-the
clearance racks at Wal-mart or
Sears are not cool.
We need to shop at places
like Aeropostle (which I still can’t
pronounce or spell correctly),
Hollister (where everything
smells like cheap cologne for
weeks-regardless of the amount
of times you wash) and Sperry
(apparently a type of shoe for all
of the kids in Norwood that own
or plan on owning a yacht in the
near future) are what this week’s
cool kids are wearing. So parents,
grab your debit cards, forget
this month’s mortgage, write
those checks so your kid looks
good the first day of school.
Remember, next
month all those new clothes that
you bought will be in a ball, on
the floor of your child’s bedroom
within close proximity of
the laundry basket that you also
purchased. You know- the one
your child can’t quite manage
to reach. For all you Norwoodites,
parents of NHS grads like
myself, and those with kids hoping
to graduate this year, think
about the potential basketball
scholarship your kid could’ve
earned if only he aimed to shoot
and get his dirty sweatpants into
the laundry basket, but I digress.
What about lunch? Of
course you gave your Pre K and
grammar school child breakfast.
Most likely they didn’t eat it- but
you bought it. And made it.
Then there’s lunch. There
will be no peanut butter and
jelly sandwiches wrapped in fold
over top sandwich bags. Apparently
these have been deemed
a weapon of mass destruction.
And sandwiches will never, ever
be placed in the brown paper
bags of yore, because that’s unheard
of. Its’ embarrassing, it’s
just not done.
Your child will be sporting
a Vera Bradleyesque paisley,
or Burberry plaid lunch bag
complete with insulated interior.
There will be no brown
paper bag because they don’t
have matching key chains, back
packs, or pens.
And what is inside that fancy
frou frou lunch bag? Not liverwurst
and Twinkies.
Kids of today want Lunchables-basically
teeny tiny morsels
of cheese, alongside even
smaller pieces of ham, or
chicken nuggets (they claim
there is chicken inside but I still
don’t buy it and I’ve been missing
my cat and hamster for a
few weeks now, just saying) full
of nothing good for them to eat.
And of course this pre-processed,
chemically infused lunch
your kid loves will leave them
starved at the end of the day.
So, whatever free time you
had planned will be spent buying
more groceries at Stop and
Shop-despite the forty tiny
packs of Lunchables your child
begged you for and ultimately
consumed within the first week
of school. He will be hungry for
at least four hours after school
starts. And fruit, which apparently
is bad for you, because of
pesticides won’t cut it- but cookies
and chips will.
And how does one get their
child to school? Well if your kid
is in sixth grade at the Middle
School-it is a free ride. What a
tease. The first year is free. For
the next two years, the deposit
of a kidney and the promise of
your first born grandkid will suffice
as down payment for the
bus. Unless you live in Kansas,
then the bus is free.
This also goes for the High
School. This year the hubby
and I had a long discussion
about the bus. Should we pay
for it (because the middle one
has friends to drive him and
why are we paying for the bus
when he isn’t actually on it) or
should we put money towards
our car? The one we actually
use and drive to places like work
and Stop and Shop to buy more
food for the needy small people
that live in our house?
In the end, he won-we paid
for the bus that the boy will
probably never ride. But for the
next few weeks, we will be eating
tuna casserole-I hear there’s
a big sale on it at Stop and Shop
this month.
Have a great summer. Greet
the teachers, write the checks.
And remember, only ten more
months til summer!
Pet Corner
New info on Goldie: You may
remember this 8 year’s young laid
back sweetheart. The new info is
that he is lap cat! His human was
in a wheelchair, and Goldie would
sit on her lap. What a buddy!
He unfortunately lost his human
when she passed away at the nursing
home where they lived. Family
couldn’t adopt him, so one of our
volunteers stepped in and brought
him to our shelter so we could help
him find his way to a wonderful
new home. Could it be yours?
Goldie
You are welcome to visit Goldie
during Norwood Petco’s store
hours.
Hello from Luna! I’m about
three, and was found living outside
an apartment complex where my
previous owners left me cold and
hungry. Now I am in foster care
and couldn’t be happier! My foster
parents have a dog and two cats
and it doesn’t matter to me at all.
I like to get along with everyone.
I’m looking for a forever home so
I can be a companion. Something
you should know about me: I
have chronic rhinitis, an irritation
and inflammation of the mucous
membrane inside my cute nose.
This means I have a runny nose.
I would need continued medical
care when adopted: antibiotics for
associated bacterial infections as
they arise, and even a nebulizer,
plus periodic nasal flushing which
is done at a specialty veterinarian
to aid in my comfort. I’m not
handicapped by this but need this
care in order to be comfortable
and allow me to eat and thrive.
Give me a call and I’d be glad to
discuss more details!
Remember Lily and Diesel?
They won the hearts of Caitlin
and Mark, adopters with love and
patience to spare! We knew they
would be the perfect parents for
this pair whose human was no
longer allowed to have them, and
were having a bit of a tough time
adapting to life at the shelter.
Here’s the latest from Caitlin:
“All is going wonderfully! Lily is
officially Queen of Cuddle...she’ll
sit with us and purr like a motorboat.
Diesel continues to make
awesome progress -- last night he
jumped up on the bed and cuddled.
He’s so much less anxious
now-- he’ll show belly when we’re
petting him.”
Great matches and happy endings
is what we’re all about. Let
us help find the perfect match for
you!
A lesson about vaccinations
from Gus Dear little Gus acquired
the feline distemper virus, Panleukopenia.
We gave him his very
best possibility to make it by ensuring
he received the superb supportive
care that Tufts VETS in
Walpole provide. Gus did his part
and tried his hardest to battle this
devastating infection, but his body
could not continue to fight and he
lost the struggle.
Feline distemper is 99% preventable
with vaccines, so please
let Gus be a reminder to all that
it is of utmost importance to keep
our pets current on their vaccines.
See your vet, or search the Internet
for options such as Petco clinics
and other low-cost providers.
We hope all pet owners realize
that serious health issues can crop
up unexpectedly, and consider appropriate
pet insurance to assist in
times like this.
BSAC stands behind all our
cats and treats each one as an individual
case. If there is a chance to
make it through a trauma, disease,
Gus
or condition, we will pursue it. Because
this becomes quite costly, we
welcome any donations to restore
the thousands of dollars depleted
from funds we collect for cases just
like Gus’. We have four additional
highly expensive cases we are concurrently
working on.
If you would like to donate,
please send a check made out to:
Bay State Animal Cooperative,
Inc., 47 Windsor Rd., Norwood,
MA 02062. Thank you! Any
amount will make a difference.
BSAC is a 501(c)3 charitable/nonprofit
organization. All donations
are tax deductible.
Meet Meowth: Named after a
cat Pokemon, Meowth is a sweet
tiger kitten approximately 16
weeks old. She is a bit cautious as
she began life outside fending for
herself.
She loves a good belly rub. She
is spayed, micro-chipped, vaccinated.
She is currently in foster
and would do great with a dog or
other cats too.
Say NO to Barn Babies
at Norwood Day
Key points to Note:
We feel this activity, in the name of “FUN,” is the epitome
of animal exploitation.
We have offered $1,000 to cancel this event this year-NOW!
Before Sept. 10th
We have expressed genuine concerns for the health and welfare
of infant animals that are not yet old enough to be 100%
vaccinated against potential disease.
We have requested copies of rabies vaccines. We have requested
diagnostic testing to confirm that there is no risk to
the public regarding animal to human disease transmission,
without any response.
What can you do? Please join us as we protest this event IF
it continues to be present at Norwood Day 2016 AND please
send your written concerns to the selectmen directly at selectmen@norwoodma.gov
make this possible. Any ideas or help is welcome! Please
I Have a Great Credit Score: So Why Can't I Get a Mortgage?
When it comes to getting a
While that's a great indicator of
someone's financial stability and
loan officers are worried about?
Thankfully for those with bad
or not go give out a mortgage. If
you're struggling to get a mortgage
even though your credit is in good
shape, read on to find what the culprit
may be.
Debt-to-Income Ratio
Your debt-to-income ratio is
one of the most important factors
your lender will check besides your
credit score. Debt-to-income ratio
is the discrepancy between how
much you owe in debt and how
much income your generate.
Your ratio should work out to
be 45% or less, so your annual debt
payments should not be more than
45% of your annual income. This
figure shows lenders how capable
you are of making future mortgage
payments as well as whether or not
you have too many outstanding
debts.
Cash in the Bank
Buying a home comes with
many costs you need to pay for
on top of the mortgage, including
closing costs, insurance premiums,
taxes and homeowners association
fees. Your lender will want to see
that you have enough money to
cover these expenses for up to six
months.
Past Homeownership History
If you've previously been a
homeowner, the bank will want to
see if you paid that mortgage on
time. Having a short sale or foreclosure
may also preclude your from
being approved for a certain length
of time.
Other Issues
Factors that may prevent you
from getting approved also include
applying for a loan that's
more than 2.5 to 3 times your annual
salary, having a shaky work
history and recently becoming
self-employed. Lenders like to see
stability in an applicant, so being
flaky in any areas of your life may
turn them off.
Tips for Getting Approved
• Ask someone to cosign
If your profile isn't as substantial
as you'd like it to be,
a cosigner can help
strengthen your case of a loan.
Be aware that you're asking
someone to put their credit
score on the line, so make
sure you'll be able to make all
the payments on time and
in full. There's nothing more
guaranteed to destroy a relationship
than ruining someone
else's finances. Check with your
lender about the guidelines for a
particular mortgage product
you're interested in, as there
may be requirements or
restrictions when a cosigner is
involved.
• Be prepared to apply
It helps to have all your necessary
documents ready for your
mortgage officer. The faster
you can respond to request for
more information, the faster
your request will be approved.
An applicant will need their two
most recent paystubs, previous
two years' W-2s and tax returns,
two month's bank statements,
insurance bill, property tax bill
and most recent mortgage statement.
• Save a 20% down payment
Not only will a large down payment
help you get better interest
rates and more mortgage
product options, it will show
lenders that you're capable of
saving. For people who are selfemployed
or have other negative
circumstances, a large down
payment can overcome worries
from a nervous lender.
• Pay down debt
If your debt-to-income ratio is
one of the reasons you're not
being approved for a mortgage,
take time to become debt free
before applying for a home
loan. If you've been saving for
a down payment, use some of
that money to pay down your
debt. By eliminating some of
your debt, you'll also increase
your cash flow and prove to a
potential lender that you have
enough money coming in to pay
a mortgage.
• Look for less than you can afford
Many people try to buy a house
with the maximum amount of
money a lender will give them.
Instead, try to apply for a loan
that's less than what you might
be approved for. That way, you'll
have more leeway in your budget
and will have a better ability
to repay the loan.
