Code Blue Conference 2016
On behalf of the Code Blue Conference, Board of Directors,
and Chapter Directors we welcome you to Code Blue
Conference-Breaking the Code of Silence 2016. City of
Galveston, our sponsors, supporters and you have made
this event possible, and we are grateful for your support,
interest and dedication to bringing awareness to medical malpractice issues.
Our theme this year-Code Blue Conference-Breaking the Code of Silence-highlights
how the importance of positive dialogue can become the catalyst that
transforms the medical community into models of success, where quality of
life and informed decisions are balanced.
Medical Malpractice is the third leading cause of death in America, according
to the Journal of Patient Safety. More than 1.5 million people die every year
from infections, communicable diseases, medication errors, inappropriate
treatment, botched procedures, and other preventable mistakes. The broader
Focus is to improve the quality of healthcare, increase accountability, advocate
for medical practitioners who are forced to remain silent, and to affect change
in practices, procedures and legal barriers.
This conference is a unique opportunity for patient safety organizations to
connect with other advocates, doctors, nurses, attorneys, hospital administrators,
and legislatures who work tirelessly to protect the health and safety of all
human beings.
We hope your experience during the Code Blue Conference-Breaking the Code
of Silence 2016 in Galveston, Texas, is rewarding, and we encourage=e you to
learn, share ideas, make connections and let’s make a difference.
2016 CONFERENCE MODERATORS
John James, retired from NASA
since 2014, is a patient safety
activist. The death of his son in
2002 due to uninformed and
unethical medical care in Waco
impelled him to improve
patient safety. He wrote A Sea
of Broken Hearts (2007) about
his son's care and co-edited a
book called The Truth about Big
Medicine (2014). He has written
a monthly newsletter about
patient safety since 2008, has
testified before a Senate
Subcommittee on medical
errors, and in 2013 wrote a
seminal article for the Journal of
Patient Safety in which he
estimated that preventable
adverse events in hospitals
bring premature death to about
400,000 Americans each year.
Lee Tilson received a BA from Ohio
Wesleyan Univ. (Philosophy & Math);
an M.A. from Wayne State Univ.
(Philosophy); and a J.D. from the Univ.
of Michigan Law School. Since graduating
from law school, he has worked
at Sommers, Schwartz. He founded
and chaired the Birth Trauma Litigation
Group of the Association of Trial
Lawyers of America, and has belonged
to the Medical Negligence Information
Group, the HMO Litigation Group, and
once served on the planning committee
for the Profoundly Injured Child
seminar. For ten years he served on
the executive board of the Michigan
Trial Lawyers Association, and has
chaired the Coalition Committee and
the Deposition Bank Committee. He
coordinated two "Protected Your
Rights" conferences for MTLA. He
organized an interdisciplinary conference
on Daubert at Wayne State
University. He developed and ran an
award winning series of New Lawyer
Seminars in Michigan.
