Mia St. John National Spokesperson
Mia St. John, professional boxer, health advocate
and mom, has been announced as the new campaign
spokesperson for The National Medical Malpractice
Advocacy Association.
About Mia St. John
Mia is an international world-class athlete, mental health advocate; founder
of Mia St. John Foundation and the mother of two children her daughter Paris and Julian
St. John who recently passed away after a long bout with mental illness. She founded “El
Saber Es Poder/Knowledge is Power” to empower youth by providing educational
material, equipment and development of Health & Wellness Programs. In addition El
Saber Es Poder along with Lou Pizzaro of the hit TV show “Operation Rep” and
producer Randy Martinez produced a PSA in Spanish to raise awareness of mental illness
for inner city youth. She has played herself on TV Shows and has her own PlayStation
game by EA Sport. Mia signed with Don King and stayed with him for a year and a half
and later signed with his rival Bob Arum of Top Rank, where she spent four years
opening for all of Oscar De La Hoya’s major fights.Mia has hosted for networks such as
Fox Sports Net, ESPN Deportes and commentating for PPV fights. She has fought all
over the world, including Beijing, China, where she won her IBA Championship. After
accumulating an unheard of boxing record of nearly 60 pro fights she finally fulfilled her
dream and became the WBC International Boxing Champion of the World.
Why Mia Joined This Campaign
November 23, 2014 was the most devastating time of Mia’s life.
Kristoff St. John acclaimed award winner of The Young and the Restless heard a mother’s
scream, a scream of desperation and something he had never experienced. This was the day
that Julian St. John was found dead in a facility that was supposed to be protecting him. Her
son was found unconscious; no one according to surveillance footage had been seen going
into his room. Julian was supposed to be checked on every fifteen minutes. This didn’t
happen. According to medical records it alleged that Julian was found immediately and
response was immediate while the incident report of emergency responders says it was
almost 30 minutes later. Julian was found with a plastic bag over his head. The lack of care,
the deliberate actions to cover-up is the reason for her
fight. Mia understands the effects of mental illness for she too suffered with obsessivecompulsive
disorder, but Mia understands that this campaign is not only the battle for
justice for her son’s death, but for those struggling for justice in the careless purloining of
those who never had a voice. Mia states that she “Will Fight until Her Last Breath.”
Code Blue Conference 2016

On behalf of the Code Blue Conference, Board of Directors, and
Chapter Directors we welcome you to Code Blue Conference-
Breaking the Code of Silence 2016. City of Galveston, our
sponsors, supporters and you have made this event possible, and
we are grateful for your support, interest and dedication to
bringing awareness to medical malpractice issues.
Our theme this year-Code Blue Conference-Breaking the Code of Silence-highlights
how the importance of positive dialogue can become the catalyst that transforms the
medical community into models of success, where quality of life and informed decisions
are balanced.
Medical Malpractice is the third leading cause of death in America, according to the
Journal of Patient Safety. More than 1.5 million people die every year from infections,
communicable diseases, medication errors, inappropriate treatment, botched
procedures, and other preventable mistakes. The broader Focus is to improve the quality
of healthcare, increase accountability, advocate for medical practitioners who are forced
to remain silent, and to affect change in practices, procedures and legal barriers.
This conference is a unique opportunity for patient safety organizations to connect with
other advocates, doctors, nurses, attorneys, hospital administrators, and legislatures
who work tirelessly to protect the health and safety of all human beings.
We hope your experience during the Code Blue Conference-Breaking the Code of
Silence 2016 in Galveston, Texas, is rewarding, and we encourage=e you to learn, share
ideas, make connections and let’s make a difference.
MODERATORS
John James, retired from NASA since
2014, is a patient safety activist. The death
of his son in 2002 due to uninformed and
unethical medical care in Waco impelled
him to improve patient safety. He wrote A
Sea of Broken Hearts (2007) about his
son's care and co-edited a book called The
Truth about Big Medicine (2014). He has
written a monthly newsletter about patient
safety since 2008, has testified before a
Senate Subcommittee on medical errors,
and in 2013 wrote a seminal article for
the Journal of Patient Safety in which he
estimated that preventable adverse
events in hospitals bring premature death
to about 400,000 Americans each year.
Lee Tilson received a BA from Ohio
Wesleyan Univ. (Philosophy & Math);
an M.A. from Wayne State Univ.
(Philosophy); and a J.D. from the Univ.
of Michigan Law School. Since
graduating from law school, he has
worked at Sommers, Schwartz. He
founded and chaired the Birth Trauma
Litigation Group of the Association of
Trial Lawyers of America, and has
belonged to the Medical Negligence
Information Group, the HMO Litigation
Group, and once served on the planning
committee for the Profoundly Injured
Child seminar. For ten years he served
on the executive board of the Michigan
Trial Lawyers Association, and has
chaired the Coalition Committee and the
Deposition Bank Committee. He
coordinated two "Protected Your Rights"
conferences for MTLA. He organized an
interdisciplinary conference on Daubert
at Wayne State University. He
developed and ran an award winning
series of New Lawyer Seminars in
Michigan.
In his spare time, he plays in a garage
band, reads, and plays with his children.
