his favorite places, so it
seemed appropriate.
My husband is a terrific
photographer, but
he primarily shoots
sports for our other print
publications, and only

rarely does portraits. He wanted to be well-prepared
for this photo shoot, so checked lighting
conditions Saturday evening, identified the
window of opportunity for getting the shots
he wanted, and recruited the correct number
of bodies to help with the efforts. Our friend
drove the boat, and my daughter and I served
as human light stands and reflector holders.
Jeff put freshly-charged batteries in each light
and the camera flash, and packed his three
favorite lenses. We were set.
Experience told us Sunday evening would
have a fraction of the number of boats from
other weekend nights, but we failed to factor in
the curiosity component of those few boaters.
We were shooting off the dock and within
the no-wake zone, but the waves rolling in
from “Lookie-Lous” kept messing with the
boat position. People also thought it was funny
to yell “Take our picture” or “Can we photo
bomb?”
We managed to work around all of that and
Jeff got some neat shots. The funniest ones
though aren’t of the passers-by trying to photo

Clay County Fair opens with country superstar
The Clay County Fair is opening
with some superstar power.
Martina McBride, a country superstar,
will be headlining the opening
night of the Clay County Fair in
the U.S. Cellular Grandstand on Saturday,
Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. The Clay
County Fair will run from Sept. 10-18,
and will feature many nights of exciting
musical entertainment.
The Clay County Fair has played
host to Martina McBride in the past,
first in 2001 and then in 2003.
“With her last appearance over a
decade ago, we knew it was time to
have her back,” said Jeremy Parsons,
the manager of the Clay County Fair.
“Martina McBride’s powerful vocals
will set the tone for the 2016 fair. It
is an honor to bring an artist of this
caliber back to the fair.”
McBride has won multiple Grammys
and has sold more than 18 million
albums. She has had twenty Top
10 singles including six No. 1 hits.
She has earned more than 15 major
music awards, including four wins for
female vocalist of the year from the
Country Music Association and three
Academy of Country Music awards for
Top Female Vocalist.
She has been awarded 14 gold records,
nine platinum honors, three
double platinum records, and two
triple platinum awards.
Another country artist will open the
night before McBride takes the stage.
Iowa musician Brad Morgan has since
moved to Nashville to pursue his career.
Tickets are on sale now and prices
are $48 (general admission stage front

Chuckwagons, sprint cars at the Clay County Fair
Chuckwagon racing may have
originated in the days of the
pioneers, but it still takes center
stage in the 21st century as drivers
steer their wagons around the track
next weekend at the Clay County Fair.
The chuckwagon races will take
place at noon on both Saturday and
Sunday, Sept. 10-11, at the U.S. Cellular
Grandstand. Tickets are $15 for
adults and $10 for children.
“It’s definitely one of our more
popular, well-followed events. People
love chuckwagon racing,” said Andrea
Wiesenmeyer, marketing and sponsorship
manager for the Clay County
Fair.
There is a core group of racers from
Chuckwagon Racers IA-MN, Inc. that
participate, but Wiesenmeyer said
people do come from all over the
Midwest to race.
The concept of chuckwagon races
stems from when cowboys herded
cattle across the great expanses of
the plains. After breaking camp the

chuckwagon crew would speed out
to overtake the herders and set up a
new camp at the next stop. Speed was
a necessity for many reasons, whether
because of traveling in hostile territory,
or to stake out prime real estate
if more than one herd was heading in
the same direction.
These “races” are recalled when
these modern wagon drivers take to
the track in Spencer.
“There is obviously a strong and
loyal following for the chuckwagon
races,” Wiesenmeyer said. “They’re
unique and have been around a long
time. It’s part of fair history and one of
those things people get excited about
every year and has become a tradition
among many families that visit the
fair.”
The chuckwagon races kick off the
dirt track fun on the first weekend of
the fair, but there will be plenty of action
throughout the week as well. The
10th Annual Arnold Supply Shootout
takes a new turn as it becomes World
of Outlaws vs. National Sprint League
(NSL) for the first time.
“We have quite a few dirt track
events. The track was re-done ten years
ago to better fit many of these styles
of racing,” Wiesenmeyer said. “IMCA
has been around in one way, shape
or form for quite awhile. It’s the 10th
year of World of Outlaws. It’s part of
the fair culture and something people
really like to see, so we try to have different
types of racing to appeal to as
many people as possible.”

My summer in Okoboji has been
absolutely incredible.
After four years of collegiate
volleyball, my first summer away from
the sport I love has been a breath
of fresh air. I’ve had the privilege of
meeting so many amazing people, experiencing
some of the best activities
Okoboji has to offer and having my
family there to enjoy it with me.
Of all the sights of summer, my last
was one of my favorites. This past week
I got to check out the brand new attraction
at Bracco called, Sky Ryder. The
Sky Ryder is a thrilling zip-line ride
that takes two passengers at a time high
into the Okoboji sky. Soaring to nearly
1,000 feet, the attraction offers its riders
a chance to see all of East Lake from a
rare perspective.
On that particular night, the evening
was breathtaking as the sunset created
a pink and orange sky. Before enjoying
dinner at Waterfront with my aunt,
uncle and cousins, we all took turns
climbing aboard the Sky Ryder. My
youngest cousin, Ryan, was my copilot.
Although neither of us have a fear
of heights, we both were a little anxious
for the initial incline.
Once we were strapped in, the ride
immediately launched to an exciting
speed. With our backs to the peak of
the ride, we never knew when we’d
reach the top. When the cart slowed,
however, the view of East Lake was
stunning. From the Tressle Bridge to
The Narrows, I could see for miles.
Even though it looked a small speck, I
could even see my house near Barefoot
Bar.
Within twenty seconds of our pause
at the highest peak, the Sky Ryder
shot us back down gaining speed as
it declined. The pond below our feet
sparkled as the sunlight reflected a
beautiful shade of blue.
When the ride prepared to come to a
halt, my anxiety set in that maybe the ride
wouldn’t stop once it reached the end.
However, the brakes on the wire
propelled us backward and prevented
us from going forward. The feeling of
hitting the brakes gave us both a major
adrenaline rush.
Reflecting on my time in Okoboji is
bittersweet.
I truly had the best summer of my life
tackling countless adventures, meeting
new people and experiencing all the incredible
sights of summer that Okoboji
has to offer. With the Sky Ryder crossed
off my list of adventures to try at the
Iowa Great Lakes, I am so thankful for
the opportunities Discover! Magazine
has given me to share my adventures
with all the people that love Okoboji as
much as I do. F

Clay County Fair offers real
life farming experience
Life on the farm may be everyday
life for some Iowans, but it is not
so for all the state’s residents.
The Clay County Fair, taking place
Sept. 10-18, is once again offering
people the chance to see what life on
the farm is like at Grandpa’s Barn.
“I strongly feel that one of the most
important things we can do at the fair
each year is provide ag education to
our fairgoers,” said fair manager Jeremy
Parsons. “Since its start in 2010,
Grandpa’s Barn has educated thousands
of people about Iowa’s number
one industry, agriculture.”
Grandpa’s Barn gives kids of all ages
the chance to learn about animals,
crop plots and farm technology.
One of the ways people can experience
farm life is with the AgCab
Simulator, sponsored by the Farm Bureau.
The AgCab allows “fairgoers to
experience being behind the wheel of
one of the largest pieces of machinery
on the farm.” Those behind the wheel
can choose from a variety of tractors
to drive including one from today that
has all the modern bells and whistles
or a tractor from the olden days.
There will be corn and beans as well
as other crops grown in Iowa for people
to explore. The plots were planted
back in May so that they would be
ready in time for the fair.
In addition to crops and the AgCab,
there will also be many animals that
people will get the chance to see up close.
“People are excited about a variety
of things in Grandpa’s Barn, but baby
animals probably produce the most
excitement,” said Andrea Wiesenmeyer,
the marketing and sponsorship
manager at the Clay County Fair.
There will be peacocks, ostriches,
turkeys, roosters and chickens as well
as a horse, donkey, pot-bellied pig and
sheep. People of all ages can try their
hand at milking a cow with Mabel the
Milker. They’ll be able to learn about
other animals including cows, goats,
piglets and horses.
There will be plenty to do and see at
Grandpa’s Barn this year.
“Even in Iowa, many people do
not have the opportunity to experience
many things that happen on a
working farm. Grandpa’s Barn allows
everyone to see, feel and hear ‘farm
life’ as they venture through the barn,”
said Wiesenmeyer. F

New items vie for title of “World’s Greatest County Fair Food”
The Clay County Fair food guide
has an alphabetized list of all
the food categories at this year’s
fair. Starting with apple slices and
concluding with wraps, the guide also
includes such delicious sounding categories
as bacon, barbecue, chocolatecovered,
deep fried, gyros, pie and
much more.
Front and center this year though
will be the “new food” category. A
panel of voters narrowed down a list
of 18 new food items to five finalists.
On the first day of the fair, Saturday,
Sept. 10, three celebrity judges will
conduct a taste test to determine
which item will be dubbed “World’s
Greatest County Fair Food.”
“Food has become so popular and
such a big deal in general at all fairs,”
said Andrea Wiesenmeyer, marketing
and sponsorship manager for the Clay
County Fair. “We thought this would
be a fun way to promote food and
get both visitors and vendors excited
about new food.”
Fair manager Jeremy Parsons noted
the importance of food has shown up
in the yearly surveys they conduct at
the fair.
“Food is becoming more and
more imporant,” Parsons said. “The
number one reason people say they
visit the fair is still ‘family time and
tradition’ but food has jumped from
number five to number two over the
past five years.”
The celebrity judges tasked with determined
the “World’s Greatest County
Fair Food” will be Spencer Main Street
director and former KSFY morning anchor
Nancy Naeve, KCAU news anchor
Tim Seaman and Rhonda Wedeking,
brand manager for KICD.
The food they will be tasting
include the Mini Choco Pie from
Original Minneapple Pie, a chocolate
pie deep fried to warm perfection and
topped with ice cream will satisfy any
sweet tooth.
There is also the Terranza from
Spencer Dream Center, which is a
version of the Nebraska beef-filled
sandwich with a signature seasoning,
cabbage and onions.
Julie’s Diner offers up the Breakfast
Bowl with hash browns, a scrambled
or fried egg, a choice of meat (bacon,
ham or sausage), shredded cheese,
green pepper, onion, topped with
white gravy.
Spam Curds are cheese-flavored
Spam that has been cubed, battered
and deep-fried, and served with a side
of ranch dressing.
Rounding out the five finalists are
the Jumbo Stuffed Crab Tots from
McLellan’s Concessions. They consist
of seasoned potatoes stuffed with
lump crab meat, shredded cheddar
cheese, sour cream and mozzarella
cheese deep-fried until golden brown.
“Uniqueness was part of the criteria
and they’re definitely all unique in
their own way,” Wiesenmeyer said.
All five of the finalists will have
large blue ribbons on their vendor
booths to make them easily identifiable
for visitors.

Of a Different Note
Award-winning Dutch organist to perform in five cities
Organ music may have slipped
down the scales in terms of
popularity over the recent decades,
but music lovers in N’West Iowa
are hoping to bring organ music back.
Arjan Breukhoven, an award-winning
organist from The Netherlands,
will be performing a number of concerts
and workshops in Orange City,
Sioux Center, Sioux City and Sioux
Falls from Sept. 10-18.
Breukhoven has never performed in
the U.S., but that will all change thanks
to the Van Marel family who heard
Breukhoven play organ while they
were on vacation in The Netherlands.
“A highlight of our two-week tour,”
said Carl Van Marel, “was attending
the worship service at the last church
where our van der Marel ancestors
worshipped before emigrating. Arjan
Breukhoven is the organist at this
280-year-old church in Berkel en
Rodenrijs.”
They started working on bringing
Breukhoven to N’West Iowa and
South Dakota.
The residency of Breukhoven is
a collaboration between several
churches, plus Orange City and Sioux
Center Arts and Northwestern and
Dordt Colleges. His tour includes
performances at Northwestern College
Chapel in Orange City, B.J. Haan
Auditorium in Sioux Center, Our Savior’s
Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls,
Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux
City, and Immaculate Conception
Church in Cherokee.
While this is Breukhoven’s first trip
to the U.S., traveling and performing
is not something new to this seasoned
musician.
“This is the first time that I will give
concerts in the U.S.A. This time I will
come to Iowa and South Dakota, and
in May 2017, I’ll go to Michigan and
Tennessee for concerts. But playing
abroad is quite normal,” Breukhoven
said. “Each year I play in many different
countries around the world. Last
year I had concert tours in western Australia,
Russia, France and Germany.”
Born in Rotterdam, Breukhoven
studied organ and church music, plus
piano, vocal, improvisation and choir
direction, at the Royal Conservatory
in The Hague. Since then, he has developed
his own wide-ranging style
of improvisation. Today, Breukhoven
gives 450 concerts and church services
annually.
In 2014, Breukhoven was awarded
the ‘Médaille d’Argent’ (silver
medal) by the ‘Société Académique
d’Encouragement et d’Education-Arts,
Sciences et Lettres’ in Paris, because
of his expertise in performing French
organ music.
Even though Breukhoven will be
performing a number of concerts, his
plan is to make each of them unique.
“I am trying to make each concert
totally different programs because I
heard that there is the possibility that
people will come to more than one
concert and I don’t want them to hear
the same music each evening. I have
a big suitcase for my music books,”
Breukhoven said. “My hope for the
concerts is that we can share an evening
with beautiful music. I also want
to touch people deeply, emotionally.”
Breukhoven is certainly excited
about performing a series of concerts
in the United States, but he’s even
more excited to meet the people and
experience the culture.
“When I’m abroad I want to
connect with the people, with the
culture, with the land,” Breukhoven
said. “It’s great to stay with people
and not in hotels so you can learn
a lot of beautiful things about the
country. I hope I have time for that
between concerts.” F

Grape stomp
Fall is here, whether we’re happy
about it or not, but the folks at
Round Lake Vineyards and Winery
are working to give you a reason to
celebrate the new season.
For the second year, they will be
hosting a Grape Stomp on Saturday,
Sept. 10. The event kicks off at 11 a.m.
and the Grape Stomp will take place
from 2-6 p.m.
Teams of two people will sign up to
participate in the Grape Stomp competition.
And it’s not just a fun thing
to participate in, it’s a very fun thing to
watch.
“It’s a two-minute timed competition
where they try to get the most
juice out of the grapes by stomping
their feet,” said Heidi Petersen, the
account manager for marketing at
Round Lake Vineyards and Winery.
“Then we’ll measure the liquid. We’ll
have different heats throughout the
day and we’ll award the first, second
and third place teams with a medal
for their efforts.”
They won’t be judging the Grape
Stomp simply on how much juice is
extracted, they’ll also be giving prizes
for the team with the best costumes
and the team with the best name.
The grapes that are all ready to be
crushed are bluebells that were grown
specifically by Round Lake Vineyards
and Winery for the Grape Stomp
event.
Last year, there were 45 teams who
stomped 1,750 pounds of grapes and

Winery hosts stomping event
the organizers are excited to see how
many grapes they go through this
year.
If you are interested if participating
in the Grape Stomp you can register
either by calling Round Lake Vineyards
and Winery or by checking out
their website.
For those who aren’t as excited
about the idea of pulling a Lucille
Ball and stomping grapes, there will
be lots of other exciting things to do
during the Grape Stomp.
Things will kick off at 11 a.m. with
music from Fishing for Olives and
then the band DNR.
There will also be a number of
vendors on hand with their wares. As
of right now there are 25-30 vendors
signed up but the organizers are leaving
spaces open so even more vendors
can sign up.
There will be a few food vendors
in addition to the winery’s own food
truck called The Bistro. They will also
be selling wine and they’ll have a beer
tent.
The cost is $5 to come to the event,
but the first 250 people will receive a
free wine glass.
“It’s going to be a smashing good
time,” Petersen said. “I’m just really
excited to see how creative people are
with their team names and their costumes.
The vineyard is such a beautiful
place and it’s nice to see people
having fun and enjoying themselves
in this place.” F

The Dickinson County Nature Center is celebrating
