LETTER FROM GARY E. KNELL
Dear Friends,
When I was offered the chance to lead the National
Geographic Society, I knew I had been given the opportunity
of a lifetime. I am deeply honored to follow in
John Fahey’s footsteps. As we continue to build upon
our impressive legacy—126 years and counting—we are
well positioned to make an even bigger difference in the
world through exploration, storytelling, and education.
National Geographic seeks out the most important and compelling stories
of our time and shares them with the world. Stories matter. Documenting
the last pristine places in the ocean has helped persuade governments to
protect them. Revealing the possibility of bringing back extinct species has
fueled a lively debate about whether we should attempt to do so. National
Geographic also brings new perspectives to matters closer to home: the
causes and consequences of extreme weather, the history of sugar and its
impact on our health, why failure can sometimes be good for us.
Our stories become important the moment they inspire you to share your
thoughts and images, illuminate an issue that affects the future of the planet,
or teach you a little more about our interconnected world. We are focusing
on three tenets—inspire, illuminate, and teach—which you’ll read more about
in this report.
I look forward to working with you—our most devoted donors and partners—
on advancing our mission. With your help, we can change the world for the
better. Thank you for supporting our work in 2013.
LIONS, LIVESTOCK, AND LIVELIHOODS
A lion’s roar is a majestic sound. But for herders or villagers in Africa, that roar
can represent a serious threat to the safety of their families and the livestock they
depend on for survival. National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative (BCI) grantees
work with communities that share their land with predators to find innovative yet
simple ways to ensure they can thrive peacefully together.
BCI grantees have identified reinforced bomas—traditional livestock enclosures
used in many parts of East Africa—as among the most effective solutions for big cat
conservation. A sturdy, well-built boma can prevent livestock from being targeted
by the cats and, as a result, can stop the cats’ being killed in retaliation. In 2013 we
launched Build a Boma, a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign that allows donors
to help us build the enclosures.
Our goal is to raise $500,000. All donations go directly to boma construction
projects in East Africa supported by BCI to help National Geographic protect lions,
livestock, and the livelihoods of local people. A donation of as little as $25 covers
the cost of maintaining a boma for a year. A gift of $500 will help a family build a
strong, new boma that will guard livestock from attack—and keep big cats from
harm—for years to come.
CHANGING THE COURSE FOR THE COLORADO RIVER
Lifeline of the American Southwest, the Colorado River is so heavily dammed,
diverted, and depleted that it no longer reaches the sea. Change the Course, a movement
spearheaded by National Geographic, BEF (formerly the Bonneville Environmental
Foundation), and Participant Media, with support from the Walton Family
Foundation, engages with the public, corporations, and on-the-ground conservation
groups to return critical flows of fresh water to portions of the river basin.
Change the Course is playing a vital role in the restoration of the Colorado Delta,
once one of the planet’s great desert aquatic ecosystems. Following the “pulse flow”
called for by the 2012 agreement between the United States and Mexico and designed
to mimic the spring flooding that once occurred naturally, Change the Course will
help secure the crucial “base flows” needed to sustain habitats that emerge during
the pulse. The delta restoration will boost fish and wildlife populations, including some
380 bird species, and benefit local Mexican and indigenous communities.
Change the Course motivates members of the public to learn about their own
freshwater footprint and take a free pledge to conserve water at changethecourse.us.
For every pledge, Change the Course restores a thousand gallons of water to the
Colorado River Basin with funding from corporate sponsors such as WhiteWave,
Coca-Cola, Disney, and 1% for the Planet. Change the Course has built a pledge community
of some 65,000 people from all 50 states and more than a hundred countries
and made significant contributions to projects throughout the entire Colorado River
Basin—from the headwaters to the delta.
ARCHAEOLOGY FROM SPACE
National Geographic explorers are using data from satellites hundreds of miles
above the Earth along with other remote-sensing technology to improve detection
of ancient hominid remains in Africa.
Explorers-in-Residence Meave and Louise Leakey and National Geographic
Fellow Sarah Parcak employed airborne hyperspectral lidar and multispectral satellite
imagery to survey Kenya’s Turkana Basin. The area is fossil rich but difficult to work in
because of challenges posed by both terrain and geological conditions. This project
leveraged Parcak’s pioneering use of similar archaeological tools in Egypt.
Lidar—which stands for light detection and ranging—uses a pulsed laser to generate
precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and surface characteristics
of the Earth. The team is overlaying the project map generated by lidar with soil
data from satellites to create high-resolution 3-D landscape imaging that will be put
into service in the field on iPads, creating virtual ground-survey guides.
In addition to collecting project data, Parcak and the Leakeys will develop a field
school in Kenya for remote sensing, GIS, and advanced surveying techniques. The
school will take advantage of free online resources such as Google Earth and Esri’s
GIS tools to build capacity among Kenyan anthropologists.
PROTECTING THE OCEAN’S LAST WILD PLACES
“We’re working to contribute to the largest ocean legacy in human history,” says
Enric Sala, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and executive director of
National Geographic’s Pristine Seas project. The exploration, research, and media
initiative aims to permanently protect pristine places in the ocean, covering several
million square kilometers of wild marine habitats by the year 2020. Pristine Seas
expeditions produce key data that help make the case for conservation of the world’s
most remote and unspoiled marine sites. Policy work and media outreach inspire
communities and governments to protect these wild places from the harmful effects
of overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction.
Sala’s team has already contributed to the protection of 400,000 square kilometers
of ocean, an area the size of California. The team conducted nine expeditions to remote
locations between 2009 and 2013. Three of the sites now have status as marine protected
areas—the Pacific Remote Islands National Monument (U.S.), Seamounts Marine
Managed Area (Costa Rica), and Motu Motiro Hiva Marine Park (Chile)—and we have a
verbal commitment for a system of marine parks covering 20 percent of Gabon’s coastal
waters. Five sites are in progress, among them three marine environments explored in
2013: the Desventuradas Islands off the coast of Chile, Franz Josef Land in the Russian
Arctic, and New Caledonia in the South Pacific. The team has an ambitious expedition
schedule in the years ahead to help protect the last wild places in the ocean.
THE FIGHT AGAINST CONFLICT MINERALS
Minerals in our electronic devices have bankrolled unspeakable violence in
the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold—
essential components in the microprocessors that power our cell phones and
laptops—are often sold by smelters that acquired the metals from mines controlled
by armed groups in a country that has seen nearly 20 years of war.
In October 2013 National Geographic magazine published “The Price of Precious,”
revealing how the extraction of these minerals contributes to violence in the DRC
and featuring powerful images by photographer Marcus Bleasdale of child laborers
and others caught in the web of “conflict minerals.” Bleasdale wants people to feel
as shocked and angry when they see his photographs as he felt when he made them.
“I want people to scream for change,” he says.
In January 2014 Intel CEO Brian Krzanich announced that the microprocessors his
company produces will no longer be made with conflict minerals from the DRC and
adjoining countries. After years of work auditing the more than 60 smelters that supplied
the company, Intel now contracts only with those that use minerals from mines
certified conflict free.
“Intel is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of microprocessors,” says
Bleasdale. “What they did is huge. It gives the effort momentum.”
GOING TO BATTLE FOR ELEPHANTS
The plight of elephants in the wild received global media attention in 2013. Illegal
ivory trafficking sparked outrage around the world, thanks in part to two exposés by
National Geographic. In February the National Geographic Television documentary
Battle for the Elephants—generously supported by David H. Koch, The Asen Foundation,
and The Charles Engelhard Foundation—took PBS viewers undercover to examine
the international network behind elephant poaching and the ivory trade. The documentary
was based in part on contributing writer Bryan Christy’s investigation of the
recent increased demand for ivory and the poachers and smugglers who meet that
demand. His cover story, “Blood Ivory,” appeared in the October 2012 issue of National
Geographic magazine.
New information on the ivory trade and other threats to elephants has resulted
in global action. In September 2013 National Geographic joined other organizations
and several African nations in signing the Clinton Global Initiative’s Partnership to
Save Africa’s Elephants, an international effort to stop elephant poaching and ivory
trafficking. In November the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service destroyed some six tons of
impounded ivory—almost a quarter century’s worth of seized carvings and raw tusks.
The government of China followed suit in January 2014 with a public ceremony to
destroy more than six tons of seized elephant ivory, the first event of its kind in China.
And in February the Obama Administration announced enhanced restrictions on the
ivory trade designed to create a near-complete ban on the commercial sale of African
elephant ivory in the United States.
BRINGING EXTINCT SPECIES BACK TO LIFE
When Jamie Shreeve, executive editor for science at National Geographic magazine,
heard about revolutionary techniques that might bring the iconic extinct passenger
pigeon back to life, he knew he was on to something. What began as a hunch for
a magazine article has since evolved into a powerful dialogue around the topic of
de-extinction—resurrecting extinct species—and the practical and ethical arguments
that go along with it.
The magazine’s April 2013 cover story, “Reviving Extinct Species,” was complemented
by a Web hub of National Geographic news and commentary on the subject
as well as the premiere of Mammoth: Back From the Dead, which aired April 12 on
the National Geographic Channel.
Scientists and conservationists who sit on either side of the debate convened at
National Geographic headquarters for TEDxDeExtinction, the first public forum on
the groundbreaking science and the issues that arise around efforts to bring vanished
species back to life. Co-hosted by National Geographic and Revive & Restore,
a nonprofit clearinghouse for worldwide de-extinction, the event garnered roughly
33,000 topic mentions on social media and generated some 265 million impressions.
De-extinction was covered by NPR, the Times of London, the Boston Globe, CNN,
CBS, and many other media outlets.
“It’s a sort of breakthrough—a turning point in our relationship with nature,” says
Shreeve. “In one sense, our power to be destructive in the environment and cause
damage to ecosystems is well proven. Here’s an opportunity to use our intellectual
capacity to do some good—to do it very thoughtfully. It’s the thoughtful part that’s
most important.”
EXPLORING OUR GRAY MATTER
Compiling the latest research in neuroscience and psychology, the original series
Brain Games debuted April 22, 2013, on the National Geographic Channel. Created by
National Geographic Television, the show delves deep inside the mind with a carefully
crafted slate of mind-bending experiments that keep viewers guessing: In one,
black-and-white photographs appear to have color; in another, a random volunteer
is “levitated.” Hailed by critics and viewers alike as fun and entertaining science,
Brain Games is part of the Channel’s strategy to offer audiences original, engaging
programming that embodies the spirit of National Geographic. Its double-episode
premiere drew 1.5 million viewers, setting a record as the highest-rated series launch
in the Channel’s history. Brain Games subsequently received a Primetime Emmy
nomination for Outstanding Informational Series or Special. The show’s second season
explores a new array of topics on how we see, think about, and process the world
around us. Episodes are devoted to attraction, trust, competition, colors, stress, and
more. The new season also premiered internationally on the National Geographic
Channel in 170 countries and 48 languages.
DOWN AND DIRTY IN THE BAYOU
Imani, a seven-year-old student from Bridgeport, Connecticut, used to be frightened of
anything that flew or crawled. “I’m not scared anymore,” she says. “It’s like a beautiful
thing that just happened.” At BioBlitz, Imani says, "I felt like an explorer.” And that is a
beautiful thing. When kids see wonder and biodiversity in their own backyards, they
realize they can help protect those habitats in a way that is life changing.
Imani (below right) was one of 1,500 schoolchildren who got their hands dirty
during the 2013 BioBlitz and Biodiversity Festival in Louisiana’s Jean Lafitte National
Historical Park and Preserve, an event made possible through the support of Southwest
Airlines, the Harold M. and Adeline S. Morrison Family Foundation, the National Park
Foundation, and the National Park Trust.
Led by more than a hundred scientists from around the country, thousands of
amateur explorers, students, and family members, along with National Geographic
explorers Juan Martinez, Zeb Hogan, and Neil Losin, conducted a 24-hour inventory of
the plants, insects, mammals, birds, and other creatures that inhabit the 23,500-acre
preserve. Using technology like GPS and smartphone apps, they crowdsourced the
identification of species so scientists and naturalists not at the park could lend their
expertise. Together, they found 458 species, including a rare Louisiana milk snake and
a fish not previously on the park’s species roster.
National Geographic and the National Park Service have made a ten-year commitment
to conduct a BioBlitz in a different park each year leading up to the National Park
Service Centennial in 2016.
Investments in new digital products and a cutting-edge website are helping educators
explain our interconnected world to students around the globe. In 2013 usage of the
Education Portal at NatGeoEd.org took off. The interactive media, lesson plans, and
mapping tools developed with the support of the Verizon Foundation and others are
reaching an enormous audience. In the last quarter of 2013 the portal welcomed more
than a million visitors per month, double the number during the same period in 2012.
We reached a larger number of educators more effectively in 2013 through
online courses and interactive e-books. Educators from around the world participated
in an eight-week online course funded by Annenberg Learner and the Annenberg
Foundation, “Water: The Essential Resource,” and reported increased confidence
across all areas related to the learning objectives. Our One Ocean is among the first
interactive professional development e-books for educators.
We debuted our Kids Engineering Exploration Challenge in China. The program
invites students to design engineering solutions to real-life problems that our explorers
face in the field. The challenge, funded by Oracle, is a collaboration of NG Education,
the NG Engineering Lab, and NG Kids. The program will be launched in the U.S.
in 2014 with the goal of building enthusiasm for and participation in the STEM subject
areas: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
To further encourage students to consider careers in STEM, we have also partnered
with Lockheed Martin to create materials for Engineers in the Classroom. This
program provides teaching tools and recommended hands-on activities for engineers
to use when sharing their experiences with K-12 students.
HELPING KIDS STAY CURIOUS
GEOGRAPHY BEE’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY
Sathwik Karnik began racing his brother at age six to find obscure locations in the
family atlas, a game his mother devised to hone his geography skills. In 2013 this
12-year-old seventh grader from Massachusetts took first place—and the $25,000 top
prize—at the annual National Geographic Bee, generously supported by Google.
For 25 years the Bee has excited American students about geography. Nearly
four million students from 12,000 middle schools participate, with state finalists
competing each May in Washington, D.C.
Since 1993 the National Geographic World Championship has expanded the Bee
internationally as a celebration of geography and cultural exchange. In the spirit of
friendly competition and academic achievement, national teams meet every other year
in cities around the world. The 2013 competition was held in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The U.S. team placed first. Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, who has moderated the Bee
and World Championship since their beginnings, stepped down following the World
Championship—but not before making a generous one-million-dollar gift to ensure the
The National Geographic Kids group gives children a wide-open window to explore,
discover, record, and share the world around them. Through our NG Kids and NG
Little Kids magazines, books, e-books, apps, videos, and award-winning website we
reach more than 20 million curious minds each month.
NG Kids goes out to four million readers in the United States every month and is
the highest-circulation fully paid kids’ magazine in the world with 16 local-language
editions, including a newly launched Chinese edition. In 2013 the Kids magazine app
was a finalist for a Cynopsis Kids !magination Award, and Little Kids won a Parents’
Choice Gold Award for the seventh year in a row. Our Children’s Books group celebrated
several successes, with the Treasury of Egyptian Mythology and The World
Is Waiting for You both earning starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus.
The Kids Almanac 2014 sold nearly half a million copies across all editions.
Engaging children outside of school is crucial to helping them understand how
to learn and be curious. In 2013 we asked kids everywhere to join the Great Nature
Project and post photos they took of plants and animals in their neighborhoods.
The result: a Guinness World Records title for the Largest Online Photo Album of
Animals. Our new Marine Missions app teaches kids about ocean animals and the
importance of water conservation in an interactive adventure game. We are also
developing exclusive digital content for Kids magazine subscribers through the digital
version of the magazine and our mobile-friendly website. And we’re expanding video
offerings on our Nat Geo Kids Channel, Roku, YouTube, and elsewhere.
National Geographic’s wildly
successful Kids magazine is
designed for children ages six
and up and often features
stories about animals, such
as the arctic fox. In 2013
the annual Almanac sold
500,000 copies. The Children’s
Books group had several
notable hits; among them was
the Treasury of Egyptian
Mythology, bringing ancient
characters vividly to life for
young readers.
CELEBRATING
125 YEARS

THE POWER OF PHOTOGRAPHY
National Geographic magazine was first published in October 1888 as
the official journal of the National Geographic Society and has since grown
to reach 60 million readers worldwide each month. Celebrating its history
as an innovative center for photography—from conducting the first photographic
survey of the night sky in the Northern Hemisphere to the pioneering
use of a robotic remote-controlled camera—the magazine continues to push
technological and creative boundaries.
The magazine marked its 125th anniversary with a special October issue
devoted to photography. To complement its release, National Geographic
also unveiled a provocative new photography blog, Proof, and launched
a redesigned photo-sharing platform, Your Shot, which invites enthusiasts
to submit photos and participate in digital assignments for the magazine.
“Photography is a powerful communication tool and form of self-expression,”
says Chief Content Officer Chris Johns. “Sharing what you see and experience
through the camera allows you to connect, move, and inspire people
around the world.”
In celebration of our 125th anniversary, the Annenberg Space for Photography
in Los Angeles presented “The Power of Photography,” a print and
digital exhibition (above) featuring iconic National Geographic images—from
portraits to landscapes to natural history. A record-breaking 80,000 visitors
saw photomosaics documenting the history of National Geographic photography,
along with an extensive digital installation showcasing the 500-plus
individual images. Thirty professional-grade, large-format LED monitors were
arranged to create video walls, ranging from 12 to 14 feet wide. The exhibition,
which was free to the public, also showed videos produced by National
Geographic—documentaries and interviews with our photographers—as
well as an original documentary commissioned by the Annenberg Space
for Photography.
A REINVENTED COUNCIL
In 2013 National Geographic created the
International Council of Advisors, composed
of industry leaders and philanthropists representing
13 states, the District of Columbia,
Azerbaijan, Canada, China, Egypt, Mexico, and
South Africa. Formerly the Council of Advisors,
the group took on an important role in 125th
anniversary activities and expanded its focus
to reflect the Society’s global mission.
The Council provides visionary leadership
and valuable insight as we plan the Society’s
future. Advisors serve as informed emissaries
to share the work of National Geographic
with new audiences.
Members are personally invited to join the
Council, which meets both at headquarters and
off-site at an annual retreat and participates in
other events throughout the year. Members are
kept up-to-date on cutting-edge research and
exploration taking place in the field. The income
generated through Council membership has
had a transformative impact on National
Geographic’s work around the globe.
“I am proud to work with the International Council
of Advisors, who give their time, talent, and resources
to support efforts the Society has deemed most
mission-critical. These leaders bring their personal
and professional connections and experiences to
strengthen National Geographic’s brand and its ability
to spread its mission throughout the world.”
DAWN L. ARNALL
2014 Chair, International Council of Advisors
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE
Behind every great National Geographic story there is a great storyteller.
National Geographic Live and the National Geographic Speakers Bureau
bring the stories of our writers, photographers, filmmakers, scientists, explorers,
and adventurers to audiences across the United States and the world.
In 2013 we reached more than 110,000 people in 17 cities around the world,
expanding to Auckland, Melbourne, and Stockholm.
The 2013-2014 National Geographic Live series premiered BELL, a oneman
play revealing the extraordinary life of Alexander Graham Bell, who
served as the second president of the National Geographic Society from
1898 to 1903. Written by journalist Jim Lehrer, directed by Jeremy Skidmore,
and starring Rick Foucheux, the play was the first original drama to be
performed at the Society.
BELL exposed many dimensions of the man known as the inventor of the
telephone. As National Geographic marked its 125th anniversary, BELL was a
fitting tribute to one of its early leaders, who embodied the spirit of exploration
with his desire to reveal, in his words, “the world and all that is in it.”
Above left: Photographer Joel Sartore shares portraits of endangered species with a Nat Geo Live
125 YEARS
GALA: “A NEW AGE OF EXPLORATION”
National Geographic’s 125th Anniversary Gala celebrated “A New Age of
Exploration” with a gathering of 850 guests from around the world at the
National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. Surrounded by spectacular
video footage projected in high definition on 80-foot-tall screens—setdesign
components never before seen in the United States—attendees
enjoyed a sustainably sourced dinner created by renowned chef and
National Geographic Fellow Barton Seaver.
“ ‘Women of Vision’ is an extraordinary collection of images revealing
the full spectrum of the human experience, from moments
of great joy and sorrow to how we live and experience the world
on an ordinary day. PNC’s partnership with National Geographic
has brought this exhibition to Washington, D.C., and will enrich
communities as the tour continues around the country.”
VISIONARY EXHIBITS AT THE MUSEUM
National Geographic has a strong history of documenting the world through
photography and supporting photographers as important storytellers who
make a difference. In 2013 the National Geographic Museum hosted two
exhibitions of powerful images by some of the world’s best.
The critically acclaimed “Women of Vision: National Geographic Photographers
on Assignment”—made possible by National Presenting Tour Sponsor
PNC Financial Services, Inc.—kicked off a three-year, multi-city tour at the
museum. Celebrating 11 award-winning female photojournalists, the exhibition
explores topics ranging from child brides to the face of modern slavery
to lions on the brink of extinction. A companion book serves as an illustrated
exhibition catalogue along with a website, wovexhibition.org.
A second engrossing exhibition, “Lions, Tigers, and Bears,” highlights years
of work by National Geographic wildlife photographers Michael Nichols,
Steve Winter, and Paul Nicklen. The images show the animals stalking, eating,
socializing, and fighting for survival.
SUSTAINABILITY AT NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
At National Geographic, stories matter. But our values extend beyond
our exploration, photography, and reporting. We care about people, our
environment, and making smart financial choices. That’s why we adopted
triple bottom line accounting—which means we seek to make decisions
based not only on revenue but also on the effect the decisions will have on
our employees, our community, and our planet.
We hope to be as bold in our sustainability efforts as the explorers we support.
We strive to minimize our own environmental impact and the impact
of our suppliers and partners. Our “Green Team” of staff volunteers from all
parts of the Society works daily to identify and reduce operational waste.
National Geographic values its stellar staff. We encourage environmentally
friendly commuting, inclusive employment policies, and healthful food
options, all of which are communicated through our award-winning intranet.
We have set the following operational goals to be met by 2015:
• Reduce our use of electricity by 5 percent compared with 2011.
• Reduce our use of water by 10 percent compared with 2011.
• Reduce our waste sent to landfills by 25 percent compared with 2011.
• Work with our suppliers to reduce the greenhouse gases emitted on
our behalf by 5 percent compared with 2011.
2013 ANNUAL REPORT 49

INSPIRING US TO CARE ABOUT THE PLANET
John Fahey joined National Geographic on
April 1, 1996, as the first president and CEO of
National Geographic Ventures. The digital
revolution was beginning to topple old media
empires everywhere, and John left his post as
head of Time Life Inc. to help the Society navigate
previously unexplored territory. His efforts were
recognized with his promotion to president and
CEO of the Society in March 1998.
The organization John took charge of nearly two decades ago little resembles
the one he has turned over to Gary E. Knell. For one thing, it is now international
in all but name. After being published only in English for more than
a century, National Geographic magazine is now also printed in 39 locallanguage
editions, reaching millions of people. The Society launched the
National Geographic Channel under John’s direction in September 1997.
Today, multiple National Geographic Channels reach more than 440 million
households in over 170 countries. The Society’s international growth encompasses
content for media platforms including magazines, books, a host of
digital offerings, and a website that logs more than 25 million visits a month.
John also greatly expanded support for explorers and scientists working
in the field, as well as our educational efforts to tell their stories and share
their findings in the classroom. Today we have made more than 11,000 grants
and have educational programs in all 50 states.
Change is inevitable. The Society’s most influential presidents have confronted
that reality. Yet none of those presidents faced the unprecedented
pace of change that confronted John. Unfazed, John focused on opportunity,
demonstrating the drive, determination, and strategic vision necessary to
lead the way.
Thank you, John, for your service to National Geographic and for your
continued service as chairman of the Society. We are grateful that you
inspire us every day to explore the world and all that is in it.
aggancio dello spremiagrumi in lavastoviglie.
all’esposizione ai campi elettromagnetici.
Primo utilizzo
lunghi, vestiti, cavi eccetera.
- Per lo spremiagrumi utilizzate solo la velocità 1.
Consigli
Preparazione
spinaci, meloni, pomodori, arance e uva.
Come servire
Tips
- Controleer voor gebruik altijd het fi lter. Gebruik het apparaat niet als u barsten
of beschadigingen ziet.
opvangbak is bereikt. Het pulpvenster raakt waarschijnlijk eerder verstopt wanneer u sap
maakt van harde ingrediënten, zoals wortels of rode bieten.
Citruspers (alleen HR1878, HR1874, HR1870)
Opmerking
bleekselderij, appels, komkommer, wortels, spinazie, meloen, tomaten, sinaasappels
Gezond recept
Sinaasappel-wortelsap
Ingrediënten:
- 1 kg wortels
- 4 sinaasappels (geschild)
- 1 eetlepel olijfolie
- 1 groot vers munttakje (optionele garnering)
Schoonmaken
Gebruik nooit schuursponzen, schurende schoonmaakmiddelen of agressieve
- Noise level: Lc = 78 dB(A).
Safety feature
This appliance is fitted with a safety feature which safeguards against overheating
due to excessive loads. In case of overheating, the juicer automatically activates the
overload protection and switches itself off. If this occurs, set the control knob to 0,
unplug the appliance and let it cool down for 15 minutes. Remove the juice jug and
detach the lid, the juice collector and the pulp container and then press the overload
protection button on the bottom of the motor unit.
Electromagnetic fields (EMF)
This Philips appliance complies with all applicable standards and regulations regarding
exposure to electromagnetic fields.
Before first use
Thoroughly clean the parts that come into contact with food before you use the
appliance for the first time (see chapter ‘Cleaning and storage’).
Tips
-
- Always check the filter before use. If you detect any cracks or damage,
do not use the appliance.
-
- Make sure the locking arm is locked into position.
-
- To keep your juice fresh longer, put the lid on the juice jug after juicing
Using the appliance
Juicer
You can use the juicer to produce fruit and vegetable juice.
Tips
-
- Do not operate the juicer for more than 60 seconds at a time when you juice
heavy loads and let it cool down sufficiently afterwards.
-
- Turn the control knob to setting 1 (low speed) or 2 (normal speed).
-
- Speed 1 is especially suitable for soft fruits and vegetables such as watermelons,
grapes, tomatoes and cucumbers.
-
- Speed 2 is suitable for all other kinds of fruit and vegetables such as apples,
carrots and beetroots.
Notes
-
- Do not exert too much pressure on the pusher, as this could affect the quality
of the end result. It could even cause the filter to come to a halt.
-
- Never insert your fingers or an object into the feeding tube.
-
- If the pulp container becomes full during use, switch off the appliance and detach
the lid and the juice collector. Then carefully remove the pulp container and
empty it.
-
- After you have processed all ingredients and the juice flow has stopped,
pour the juice from the jug into the glass.
Empty the pulp container
Note: When the pulp container has reached its maximum capacity, pulp ends up in the
juice collector, lid and in the juice.
If the pulp container becomes overfilled, the appliance may become blocked.
When this occurs, switch off the appliance and remove the pulp from the pulp
container. Let the appliance cool down for 15 minutes and press the overload
protection button on the bottom of the motor unit to reset (?).
Note: The pulp window helps you to see when the pulp container is full and needs to be
emptied. Because the pulp window may become blocked before the maximum capacity
of the container has been reached, also check the level indication on the juice jug.
The pulp window is more likely to become blocked when you juice hard ingredients,
such as carrots or beetroots.
Citrus press (HR1878,HR1874,HR1870 only)
Note
-
- If you want to extract juice straight into a glass, use the direct serve spout
accessory.
-
- To prevent damage and injuries, keep the operating appliance away from long
hair, clothes, cords, etc.
-
- Only use speed 1 for the citrus press.
Tips
Preparations
-
- Use fresh fruit and vegetables, as they contain more juice. Pineapples, beetroots,
celery stalks, apples, cucumbers, carrots, spinach, melons, tomatoes, oranges and
grapes are particularly suitable for processing in the juicer.
-
- The juicer is not suitable for processing very hard and/or fibrous or starchy fruits
or vegetables such as sugar cane.
-
- Leaves and leaf stalks of e.g. lettuce can also be processed in the juicer.
-
- Remove stones from cherries, plums, peaches, etc. You do not have to remove
cores or seeds from fruits like melons, apples and grapes.
-
- When you use the juicer, you do not have to remove thin peels or skins.
Only remove thick peels that you would not eat, e.g. those of oranges, pineapples,
kiwis, melons and uncooked beetroots.
-
- When you prepare apple juice, take into consideration that the thickness of
the apple juice depends on the kind of apple you use. The juicier the apple,
the thinner the juice. Choose a kind of apple that produces the type of juice
you prefer.
-
- If you want to process citrus fruits with the juicer, remove the peel as well as
the white pith. The white pith gives juice a bitter taste.
-
- Fruits that contain starch, such as bananas, papayas, avocados, figs and mangoes
are not suitable for processing in the juicer. Use a food processor, blender or
hand blender to process these fruits.
-
- To extract the maximum amount of juice, always press down the pusher slowly.
Serving
-
- Drink the juice immediately after you have extracted it.
-
- If you want clear juice without a foam layer, put the lid with integrated foam
separator on the juice jug. If you want cloudy juice with a foam layer, remove the
lid with integrated foam separator from the juice jug and stir the juice before you
pour it in a glass.
-
- Apple juice turns brown very quickly. To slow down this process, add a few drops
- To rinse the juicer when you switch to a different fruit or vegetable and want to
avoid mixing flavours.
-
- To dilute the juice with water and catch even the last drop of juice.
Sicherheitsfunktion
Exposition in elektromagnetischen Feldern.
Tipps
-
-
- Entsteinen Sie Kirschen, Pflaumen, Pfirsiche usw. Aus Obst wie Melonen,
Äpfeln und Trauben müssen die Kerne bzw. Samen nicht entfernt werden.
-
Presse-agrumes (HR1878, HR1874, HR1870 uniquement)
