The Church Floor is a pure natural phenomenon,
the tops of basaltic columns on the surface, covering
an area of about 80 m², just like tiles on the ground. Basaltic
columns are created when the flowing lava comes to a halt and
cools off, probably in boggy areas, where steam percolates through
as well. The Church Floor was declared inviolate.

The effect produced by a group of meteoroids,
probably the debris left by the passage of a comet,
coming from the same area in the sky. A large
number of meteors that appear over a period of
hours or days and seem to come from the
same direction in the sky.

Ice caves are temporary structures that
form at the edge of glaciers when
flowing water melts a hole into glaciers.
The tightly packed ice has very few air
bubbles and absorbs all light except for
blue, giving the ice its unique color.

The Pororoca is a surfable tidal wave that
travels as far as 500 miles up the Amazon
River - and at times - can reach 12 feet high.
The longest wave in the world forms only
twice a year from February to March, when
the tides of the Atlantic Ocean meet the
mouth of the Amazon.

Supercells are the rarest and most
dangerous type of storm. While they are

vertical rotation of their updraft means

Yellowstone is home to about half of the world’s geysers —
the largest concentration on earth, around 10,000 in all.
The park includes 300 geysers and hot springs including
Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Hot Spring. Geyser basins
throughout the Park feature groups of steaming, gurgling,
and spraying spectacles, many in glorious color.

Aurora is a natural light display in the sky,
predominantly seen in the high latitude regions.
Auroras are caused by charged particles, mainly
electrons and protons, entering the atmosphere
from above causing ionization and excitation of
atmospheric constituents, and consequent
optical emissions. Incident protons can also
produce emissions as hydrogen atoms after
gaining an electron from the atmosphere.

The Moeraki Boulders are huge natural
spherical boulders that have formed at
Koekohe Beach over time. These balls
were originally formed under the sea floor
in a process that saw sediment, such as
sand, hardened into stone. Over 60 million
years, coastal erosion revealed these
creations to the world.

These colourful rock formations are the
result of red sandstone and mineral
deposits laid down over millions of
years. Wind and rain then carved
amazing shapes into the rock, forming
natural pillars, towers, ravines, valleys,
and waterfalls.

These lens-shaped anomalies form when
moist air flows over a mountain and piles
into large and layered clouds. Due to their
strange shape, these clouds are often
mistaken for UFOs.

Sailing stones can weigh up to 700
pounds and move across the barren
desert without help from humans or
animals. It was only recently that this
spooky migration was explained. In
the winter, ice forms around
thousands of rocks and as the
ground becomes wet, the stones
begin to slide, leaving magnificent
trails behind them.
