An Apprenticeship is the perfect way to gain 

a qualification while you work. 

Normally it involves one day a week in college and 

the rest of the time you are in the workplace. 

This is a great way to learn the skills that you need to 

succeed in your chosen career. You also get taught ‘on 

the job’ directly by the people who are in the know in 

that industry. 

At Kirklees College we offer the widest range of 

Apprenticeships in Calderdale and Kirklees. 

Apprenticeships can take between one and four years, 

depending on the type and level you do. There is no 

set time to complete an Apprenticeship. You will work 

in your job for at least 30 hours per week. 

Research shows apprentices earn, on average, 

over £100,000 more in their lifetime than other 

employees. 

And all our employers and Apprentices say that it

APPLYING FOR AN 

APPRENTICESHIP 

Applying for an Apprenticeship can be 

confusing for some people, but don’t worry 

we are here to help you. 

The two main ways are: 

1 Apply for an Apprenticeship in a subject area 

and our teams will help you to find a suitable 

employer. If you know you want an 

Apprenticeship within a certain subject area 

(e.g. hair) then you can apply using the college 

application form or UCAS progress. 

You will come in for a college interview. If the team 

offer you a place on an Apprenticeship then we will 

pass your details on to companies who we think you 

are a good match for and they will then contact you 

to arrange an interview with their company. 

2 Apply for a specific Apprenticeship vacancy. 

We advertise all our vacancies on the college 

website. If you see one that you are interested in, 

then you can apply for that direct to us. You come 

in for a college interview, and then if suitable you 

will go see the company for an interview. 

If you apply direct to us for an Apprenticeship, then 

usually we will also give you an offer of a place on a 

full time course as back up. If you haven’t found an 

employer by enrolment then you can join the full time 

course. 

You will need a good CV to get an interview. Don’t 

worry you can email your CV to our careers team 

and they will help you, or you can come to one of our 

workshops. If you are worried about your interview 

then we also run interview skills workshops. Dates 

are available on our website along with some handy 

guides. 

Finally...some companies also run their own 

recruitment process, so it useful to keep an eye in the 

local press for any adverts.

Kirklees College Sports Academy gives you the chance to study at college whilst training in your 

chosen sport - football, rugby or boxing. 

If you’re aged between 16-19 years old and you’re serious about sport, the academy is for you.

Enterprise Week: college-wide initiative based around 

Global Entrepreneurship Week (November). 

You’ll be encouraged to develop communication skills,

SKILLS 

Employability Week: as part of National Careers Week in March, 

students take part in a range of activities to improve their employability. 

This includes careers conventions, visiting employer presentations, mock interviews and CV workshops. 

KC Works: a college programme run in partnership with recruitment company Stafflex, to help our 

students boost their work skills through work experience, work placements and potential opportunities to 

progress into Apprenticeships or work. It also provides a vital link between the college and employers from 

across the area. 

KC Volunteer: find out about local volunteering opportunities, and how to fundraise or work with 

community groups. Our monthly Charitable Tuesday event gives local organisations the chance to 

showcase these opportunities and raise awareness for their cause.

the latest resources, access to careers guidance software like Careers 

Coach, and you can book individual appointments with our qualified 

careers advisers. 


TASTER SESSIONS AT KIRKLEES COLLEGE 

In Years 9-13 tasters are a great way to find out about a subject area and decide 

if it’s the right option for you. 

October to December: Years 11-13 sessions, 

January to March: Years 9-10 sessions, 

April to June: Year 9. 

If the session takes place during the school day then you will need to get your school 

to sign the booking form authorising you to miss school. For twilight sessions (after 

school hours) just complete the booking form and return it to us with a parent or 

carer signature. We will then send you further information about attending the 

session. Sessions are booked on a first-come, first-served basis and are free to take 

part in. (Sessions will only run if we get enough students signed up).

When you start at Kirklees College, you 

will get a progress coach who works with 

students in your subject area. 

Your progress coach is there to support you and help 

you progress, achieve and develop successfully during 

your time at college.

Progress coaches will help you to work towards 

goals such as gaining employability skills, enterprise, 

equality and diversity, positive behaviour and 

British values, as well as looking at your personal

out who your progress coach is during your induction 

at college. 

Progression, Achievement and Development – PAD 

sessions with your progress coach: 

• Promote positive discussion around relevant 

topics affecting young people’s lives.

arrange for you to have an external work placement. 

This gives you a great opportunity to develop good 

employment skills, and build your general confidence 

and understanding of what it’s like at work. 

There are two areas we’ll work with you on so you are 

work-ready; 

• Work preparation: we have lots of activities at 

college; ‘work smart’, ‘work coach’ and internal 

placements and volunteering opportunities. 

Employability Week is a highlight in our student 

calendar (have a look online). We also look at 

higher education progression options and UCAS 

applications too. 

• Work placement: this is about getting you out of 

college and into an external work experience that

: ENTERPRISE 

Enterprise week gives you the chance to use and 

7 develop 8 entrepreneurial skills. We set projects for 

team competitions, often to solve real business issues 

for college or local employers (think Dragon’s Den 

meets The Apprentice!). You’ll get to work with others, 

and share skills, knowledge and ideas. Have a look 

online at everything we do.

will be available on the college’s website to download or on 

request from the college’s information team from October 

2016. 

Application deadline 

For courses starting in September 2017, the deadline for full time 

applications is Thursday 6 April 2017. 

If we receive your application after this date we cannot guarantee 

you an interview with a member of academic staff. Leaving your 

application to the last minute may result in courses already being full. 

We DO NOT have a deadline for Apprenticeship applications as jobs 

are available all year round.

To help us process your application please make sure you complete all sections of the application form clearly in 

black or blue ink. 

It is important that we can read:

• the course you are applying for,

All applications will be processed centrally however some courses are available at both Huddersfield and Dewsbury

OUR CENTRES 

Brunel Construction Centre 

Old Fieldhouse Lane, Off Leeds Road, Huddersfield, HD2 1AG. 

Course areas: construction 

The Brunel Construction Centre specialises in construction courses with tradefocused 

facilities, including plumbing and electrical workshops, making it the 

ideal place to become successful in your chosen profession. 

Engineering Centre 

Technology Quarter, Turnbridge Road, Off St Andrew’s Road, Huddersfield, HD1 

6RA. 

Course areas: engineering and motor vehicle. 

The college’s specialist Engineering Centre includes maintenance and 

fabrication workshops, CNC and mechanical workshops, demonstration areas, 

classrooms, a large automotive workshop and spray booths. 

Hargate Hill Equestrian Centre 

Hargate Hill, Glossop, Derbyshire, SK13 6JL. 

Course areas: animal care, horse management and horse care. 

Animal care and equine students can take advantage of the facilities at Hargate 

Hill Equestrian Centre, Glossop. The modern centre caters for 150 horses and 

a variety of other animals. It helps students learn essential practical skills. 

Situated on the edge of the stunning High Peak National Park, Hargate Hill also 

features tranquil lakes and 150 acres of beautiful countryside. 

Highfields Centre for Media, Music and 

Performing Arts 

Highfields Road, New North Road, Huddersfield, HD1 5LS. 

Course areas: media, music and performance. 

Highfields has impressive professionally-designed, soundproofed rehearsal rooms, 

recording studios, media equipment and performance and rehearsal spaces. 


Huddersfield Centre 

Waterfront Quarter, Manchester Road, Huddersfield, HD1 3LD. 

Course areas: Access to HE, animal care and agriculture, art and design, 

business and enterprise (including Peter Jones Enterprise Academy), 

childhood studies, computing, ESOL, foundation learning, hair and beauty, 

health and social care, hospitality and catering, public and uniformed 

services, science, sport and travel and tourism. 

The Huddersfield Centre is fitted with state-of-the-art equipment. The 

new centre offers nine floors of classrooms and workshops, a gym, training 

restaurants, hair and beauty salons, mock air cabin simulator, student 

services all in one place, cash point, free wifi and much more including a 

Starbucks opened in September 2016. 

Process Manufacturing Centre 

Technology Quarter, Turnbridge Road, Off St Andrew’s Road, Huddersfield, 

HD1 6RA 

Course areas: Apprenticeships in process manufacturing/warehousing, 

storage and logistics 

The PMC is an employer-led training centre for process manufacturing 

industries. The centre opened in 2016 and provides a state-of-the-art 

process manufacturing training facility, chemistry laboratories and IT and 

learning resources. 

Taylor Hill Centre 

Close Hill Lane, Taylor Hill, Huddersfield, HD4 6LE. 

Course areas: countryside, equine and animal care. 

The eco-friendly Taylor Hill Centre houses the college’s animal care and 

countryside management courses. The building features a turf roof, wind 

turbine and solar wall and has a tropical butterfly habitat, beehives, 

greenhouses, extensive outdoor facilities and wildlife ponds. 



Wheelwright Centre, Birkdale Road, Dewsbury, WF13 4HQ. 

Course areas: art, design, fashion and photography. 

Based in Dewsbury, the centre has great facilities, including a drive-in 

photography studio, library, gallery space, refectory and other art and design 

studios. 

Dewsbury Centre 

Halifax Road, Dewsbury, WF13 2AS. 

Course areas: Access to HE, business, computing, construction, childhood 

studies, ESOL, foundation learning, hair and beauty, health and social care and 

motor vehicle (Entry Level 3 and Level 1). 

Home to further and higher education courses, the centre has a refectory, cafe, 

study centre, careers library, hair and beauty salons and easy access to town 

centre transport. 

DEWSBURY LEARNING QUARTER 

Dewsbury Town Centre 

We are looking forward to opening fantastic new facilities in Dewsbury – right in 

the heart of the town centre - to provide exciting opportunities for current and 

future students. 

PLANNED FOR 

2017/18 

A new centre will be built on land next to Lidl supermarket off Bradford Road mainly for full-time 

students aged 16 to 18 including special areas for foundation learning, construction and motor vehicle. 

And the iconic landmark Pioneer House - opposite the railway station - will be transformed into a centre 

for higher level skills, Apprenticeships and post-19 studies, specialising in creative and digital media and art, 

healthcare and business and finance. It will also have hair and beauty salons and a café which will open to 

the public.
