Welcome...
to the very special 30th
Essex Country Show
It takes a lot of time and effort by the committee to put together the show and we are very grateful for everyone’s
help, dedication and time. We would also like to thank all of the exhibitors who support us here at Barleylands,
some of whom have been to every show!
Please take your time to explore the showground and take in all the exhibits at the show, there is so much to see
and experience from the magnificent steam engines to the mouth-watering food hall and popular ring displays.
There really is something for everyone!
During your time with us don’t forget to visit The Village. With over 50 Craft Studios it is the biggest in England and
many will be demonstrating their interesting crafts. Earlier this year we were joined by an exciting new addition in
The Village; The Tiptree Tea Rooms and Pantry! The Tea Rooms and Pantry will be open all weekend so do make
sure you pay them a visit.
Thank you for visiting the Essex Country Show. We hope you all have a fantastic day here with us.
Steam Engines
A steam engine is an external combustion heat engine
that makes use of the heat energy that exists in steam,
converting it to mechanical work.
Steam engines were used as the prime mover in
pumping stations, locomotives, steam ships, traction
engines; steam lorries and other road vehicles. They were
essential to the Industrial Revolution and saw widespread
commercial use driving machinery in factories and
mill, although most have since been superseded by
internal combustions engines and electric motors. Steam
engines would have been scrapped and disappeared if
enthusiast had not saved and preserved these wonderful
examples of British Engineering. Today there are about
3,000 steam engines in preservation.
National Traction Engine Trust
The NTET’s official moto is ‘Preserving Our Heritage with
Steam on the Road’. An everyday translation is ‘Taking
History Forward, Safely.’
Formerly established in 1954 as the National Traction Club,
the now National Traction Engine Trust has over 3,500
members consisting of owners, enthusiasts and event
organisers of all ages and gender in over 20 countries
worldwide.
The NTET is held in high esteem for its work relating to
driver training, event safety seminars, technical support to
owners and event organisers and for its Steam apprentice
Club.
The NTET acts as the umbrella organisation for the
Steam Traction movement with affiliations held by over
30 organisations in the UK and worldwide including the
Road Locomotive Society, the Road Roller Association and
many regional clubs and associations. To ensure that
road steam has a voice in the affairs of government the
NTET is affiliated to the Federation of British Historic Vehicle
Clubs.
Worldwide membership is active in Ireland, Switzerland,
Germany, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Australia,
New Zealand, Canada and the USA. The signs are
that interest in membership is growing in many other
countries also.
Individual or affiliated group/club membership is
available. For more details contact Membership Secretary,
Lions Club
Local Lions out in numbers at the show to help protect children.
Lions from all over East Anglia are positioned at the pedestrian gates and in the Lions PR Stand offering FREE wristbands
for children. Each “Guardian Angel” wristband has the mobile telephone number of the child’s parent or guardian
written on, so that if the child becomes separated from the adults, they can be reunited by a simple call to the mobile.
The wristbands are similar to those used by music festivals and can be seen by children as a fashion accessory. This is a
free service provided by Lions throughout East Anglia at many large shows, and has helped the reuniting of parents and
children on a number of occasions.
Lions Clubs International are local volunteers who want to help their local, national and international communities and
have fun doing it. If you are looking for a way to have fun supporting others, please talk to a Lion or find us on the web at
www.billericaylions.com as we are always looking to increase the amount of service we can give.
Threshing Machines work by knocking out the grain from the ears of the wheat, leaving the stalks to be used for
animal bedding. It took around 7 people to run the Threshing Machine, including one person to look after the steam
engine, one to put the wheat into the machine, at least three people on the wheat stacks, one person putting the grain
into sacks and someone to take the chaff away.
This year’s Threshing Demonstrations will be taking place between 11am – 12pm and 2pm – 3pm
A tribute to Dave Dale
who passed away recently
For many of you reading this at the show today Dave Dale may not be a name you recognise so let us tell you a little
about him... Dave was involved in the show from the very beginning. Running the Steam Engine section with great
enthusiasm and pride there was never a job too big.
In its prime as a steam rally the show was bursting at its seams with over 80 steam engines onsite. Making sure they all
parked up in the right place was job in itself. Dave would arrive early the weekend before the show, perfectly position the
wooden stakes and soon despair as the engines began to arrive and use the wood for their fires! All part of the fun!
Dave joined us on the show committee 30 years ago, attending every meeting with enthusiasm and ideas. He certainly
had a twinkle in his eye and a wry smile! He
knew many people in the steam world and
could tell many a story about anything to do
with steam. Dave could always be relied on
to supply a low loader for the heavy haulage
section which we were most grateful for.
Along with steam he had another great
passion for flying and aerobatics!
After many years on the show committee
2012 became the year for Dave to retire. He
still played a role in the show bringing along
his engine and then later becoming a visitor.
Our sympathies go out to the family.
Set of three abreast Gallopers. These Steam driven
gallopers, built in 1898, have been in the Downs’ family
of Wickham Bishops for three generations. David’s
grandfather Allan Downs originally purchased the
Gallopers in 1940. Allan’s son John took over in 1960 and
now David has looked after them since 1992. David travels
all over the country to shows, weddings and parties with
the gallopers, which are one of the few remaining that are
still steam powered. They require a lot of work to keep them
in good condition and up to Health & Safety Standards.
The Shire Horse
The largest of the English native breeds and was mainly used as a draught and general working
horse. Shires are between 16hh 2” and 18hh (1 hand = 4 inches/100mm) in height with flowering
feathers on their long lower legs. The colour varies between bay, brown, black and grey with plenty of
white on their legs and feet.
The Clydesdale
The Clydesdale Horse is a breed native to Scotland used for draught purposes. In the 1920s and 30s it was
smaller than a shire but today after selected breeding it stands 16hh to 18hh. Clydesdales are usually bay in
colour, but roan, black, grey and chestnut also occur. Most have white markings, including on the face, feet,
legs and occasional body spotting. They also have feathering on the lower legs.
The Ardennes
This is the smallest ‘Heavy horse’ you will see working here, standing between 15hh and 16hh in height.
The Ardennes is the origin of all heavy horse breeds existing today. They have been used in battle as
cavalry chargers and draught animals since the times of Julius Caesar and the Roman Legions. The
horses can be seen in all colours from Bay, chestnut and grey to a rare black.
Return of the Ploughing Pair!
Purchased in 1982 for a total of £12,800 ‘Giant Panther’ and ‘Giant Tiger’ soon became a popular attraction at
Barleylands Farm. Bought a little worse for wear the pair were lovingly restored to their original glory by Dave Dale and
Jim Mundon. If it wasn’t for the hard work the duo put in we would not be able to enjoy the impressive sight today.
The ownership of the engines hasn’t always been plain sailing. After a successful visit to the Essex Young Farmers
Show in May 2014 our Ploughing engine ‘Giant Panther’ built in 1917 fell from the low loader transporting it back to
Barleylands. Unbelievably it fell just 1.7 miles from returning home.
Since that day the engine which works as part of a pair alongside ‘Giant Tiger’ has gone through £110,000 worth of
repairs. The flywheel, boiler and steering mechanism were all damaged and much more.
Arriving back at Barleylands in August both engines have been re painted and polished ready for their grand return!
They are both back in action at this year’s show, the first time they have been seen together since 2013.
Whilst you are at the show this weekend make sure you head down to the ploughing field to see them in action.
Churches Together in Essex & East London
Are you running out of steam? Then come along to the Churches’ Tent near the main show ring where there is plenty of
space to sit and rest whilst enjoying free Fair traded tea and coffee. You will also find plenty of free activities for children
including face painting and other crafts, and stalls from other
Christian groups. You could take advantage of the opportunity
to add a prayer request to the prayer board, and there are
people who would also be willing to take time to talk with you
and pray for you should you find this helpful. The whole show
will be committed to God in prayer on Saturday at 9.00 am,
and it would be great to welcome many exhibitors to this short
service before the show officially opens. On Sunday you are
also welcome to join Reverend Bernadette Hull who will be
coming to celebrate Holy Communion at 8.30am.
This year’s charities
Each year members of our committee take it in turns to select local charities to receive a donation.
This year we are pleased to say the below have been chosen-
Brainwave Children’s Charity
Brainwave offers therapy to children with disabilities and additional needs to help them achieve their potential.
Children seen are of varying disability but their therapists work individually to make sure that the therapy
is always personal. The exercise therapy programme they devise meets the individual needs of each child
and what makes Brainwave different is that our therapists show the parents how to do this therapy at home;
empowering parents to take an active role in their child’s development. Home therapy equipment is all supplied
by Brainwave.
Brainwave does not receive any Government funding and has to look at various ways of raising our income.
For more information please contact Gerry Gould, Community Manager - gerrygould@brainwave.org.uk or visit
www.brainwave.org.uk
Southend Hospital Charity, Dementia Appeal
Our society is becoming increasingly aware of friends and relatives suffering from this awful illness. Southend
Hospital is raising funds to cater for the needs of patients in three wards, plus a day assessment unit and the
Princess Anne Ward. They are hoping to provide just some of the below;
• ‘Lunch club’ facilities: four wipe-clean, supportive dining chairs and dining table.
• Memory Boxes; pictures and conversation cards to stimulate memories and conversation.
• Bed and chair sensors to alert nurses when patients want to get up, reducing falls.
• Communicator’s for the hard of hearing – magnifies sound, making hearing easier.
• Personal DVD players, MP3 players and over earphones to listen to relaxing music.
The hospital is hoping to raise £100,000 for these projects. Donations can be made through their ‘justgiving’
page, they can be contacted on 01702 385337, or email fundraising@southend.nhs.uk
HARP – Southend
HARP is an independent charity based in Southend on Sea whose aim is to reduce homelessness by providing
essential services, emergency housing and long term solutions, enabling people to rebuild their lives and return
to independent living. Within a year HARP provided 4,500 food parcels and 66,000 meals in their various hostels.
HARP relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses to carry on providing this service. As well as money
donations they welcome food, toiletries and other essential items. For more information please visit their website
www.harpsouthend.org
In 2015 the Essex Country Show was pleased to help Essex Air Ambulance, Southend Hospital – Keyhole Cancer
Appeal and Fair Havens Hospice.
Vintage Commercial
& Military Vehicles
The coming of the commercial vehicle at the beginning of the 1900’s was a turning point in transport history. British
manufacturers like A.E.C., Foden and Leyland were to be seen on our main roads across the country all but at speeds
of 20 and 30 miles an hour. How times have changed! So enjoy the vehicles here this weekend, many saved and
restored by their owners.
Imperial Bird of Prey Academy
The Imperial Bird of Prey Academy, based here at Barleylands Farm Park, was founded in 2011 by well-known
and respected falconer, Nigel King.
The Academy has rapidly grown into a fantastic visitor attraction, performing flying demonstrations daily
throughout the peak periods, as well as boasting an accomplished off-site flying team. The team is often at
schools, universities and other Shows educating children and adults alike in raptor conservation.
With conditions being right we could see some amazing aerial prowess from the team’s falcons this weekend.
These include ‘Grace’, the Academy’s amazing Kestrel – a bird often seen hovering alongside our motorways...
and perhaps ‘Storm’ the Gyr falcon (The biggest falcon in the world!)
The Academy’s Barn Owls ‘Magic’ and ‘Mystic’ will also be seen quartering the arena. For the romantics out there
you may be interested to know that they are also ring bearers at wedding ceremonies!
The Academy houses a number of different types of raptor including Gonzo the Hooded Vulture. Gonzo was
taken on by Imperial after recovering from cancer; he even completed the ‘Race for Life’ that took place at
Barleylands a few years ago!
This weekend Imperial Bird of Prey Academy will be performing 2 flying demonstrations each day in the main
ring and have a daily static display for all to enjoy! Why not pop over to the stand to say hello to both the birds
and team!
If you would like to find out more on Imperial Bird of Prey Academy and the range of experience days they have
to offer visit -
The Rochford Hundred Vintage
Tractor & Engine Club
The Rochford Hundred Vintage Tractor & Engine Club was founded in
May 1983 by two enthusiasts, Ken McVittie and Phil Vidler, both of whom
are still very much involved in the Club as Chairman and Vice-Chairman
respectively.
As a club we have been working with this show since it started in 1987.
Our role is to organise the stationary engine display, the static tractors, the
vintage ploughing and harvesting demonstrations. We also offer vintage
tractor and trailer rides that transport you around the show. Come and
enjoy our displays and please do not hesitate to ask any of the exhibitor’s
questions regarding their exhibits. Dave Wall (Secretary)
This year there will no Ploughing Match Competitions running on
Saturday, instead there will be ploughing demonstrations running all
weekend in the harvest field.
Southend Model Boat Club
Southend Model Boat Club will again
be hosting the model boating event at
the show this year. Our display, both in
the marquee and on the lake, will be
supported by around 10 different clubs
and associations from around the south
east of England, most of who welcome
new members. We will have on display
several hundred model boats, including
highly detailed naval vessels, fishing
boats, tugs, Thames Sailing Barges,
racing yachts and fast electric power
boats. The models may be seen in action
on the lake throughout the day.
If you’re interested in getting started in the
hobby of building and operating radio
controlled model boats this is an ideal
opportunity to find a local club and chat
with a lot of active model builders, all
of whom are very happy to share their
knowledge and experience that can
avoid you making expensive mistakes.
Our own club has been established
since 1948 and we meet regularly at
Southchurch Park Lake, just off the
Southend sea front near the Castle pub;
for sat-nav users: SS1 2SX will take you to
the gate. We also have bi-monthly social
meetings at the Royal Naval Association
Club in East Street Southend. You can
contact us and find out more about our
club through our website at:
www.smpbc.co.uk, or better still come
along and meet us for a chat.
