Essex Country Show 2016 Showman’s Engines Steam power entered into the fairground in the nineteenth century. Steam not only provided a method of driving engines, but transportation from place to place and the power to light the rides and the fairground. 20. Built 1920. Reg.AH0117 Owner/Driver: John Downs, Tilbury (To be found with the fun fair) Woodsawing Demonstration The wood sawing demonstration is being operated by Steve White, Upminster. The method on show is demonstrating the traditional way of wood sawing. 22. Burrell Steam Engine ‘Prince Charles’ Built 1908. Philpot & Son Working Engines - Threshing Demonstration Threshing Machines work by knocking out the grain from the ears of the wheat, leaving the stalks to be used for animal bedding. It took around 7 people to run the Threshing Machine, including one person to look after the steam engine, one to put the wheat into the machine, at least three people on the wheat stacks, one person putting the grain into sacks and someone to take the chaff away. This year’s Threshing Demonstrations will be taking place between 11am – 12pm and 2pm – 3pm 10. Burrell Steam Engine ‘Black Bess’ Built 1902. Works no.2473. Working Engines - Ploughing Engines The largest of all Steam Engines were used, as the name suggests, for ploughing. They were worked as a pair or set. These engines weighed around 22 tons each and could plough up to 30 acres a day. 25. Fowler Ploughing Engine ‘Giant Tiger’ Built 1917. Works No.14728. DO1919 Owner: HR Philpot & Sons, Barleylands Water Cart Was used for carrying water to the engines. The one on display today was towed by two horses. Owner: H.R.Philpot & Son, Barleylands A tribute to Dave Dale who passed away recently For many of you reading this at the show today Dave Dale may not be a name you recognise so let us tell you a little about him... Dave was involved in the show from the very beginning. Running the Steam Engine section with great enthusiasm and pride there was never a job too big. In its prime as a steam rally the show was bursting at its seams with over 80 steam engines onsite. Making sure they all parked up in the right place was job in itself. Dave would arrive early the weekend before the show, perfectly position the wooden stakes and soon despair as the engines began to arrive and use the wood for their fires! All part of the fun! Dave joined us on the show committee 30 years ago, attending every meeting with enthusiasm and ideas. He certainly had a twinkle in his eye and a wry smile! He knew many people in the steam world and could tell many a story about anything to do with steam. Dave could always be relied on to supply a low loader for the heavy haulage section which we were most grateful for. Along with steam he had another great passion for flying and aerobatics! After many years on the show committee 2012 became the year for Dave to retire. He still played a role in the show bringing along his engine and then later becoming a visitor. Our sympathies go out to the family. 7
