Return of the Ploughing Pair!
Purchased in 1982 for a total of £12,800 ‘Giant Panther’ and ‘Giant Tiger’ soon became a popular attraction at
Barleylands Farm. Bought a little worse for wear the pair were lovingly restored to their original glory by Dave Dale and
Jim Mundon. If it wasn’t for the hard work the duo put in we would not be able to enjoy the impressive sight today.
The ownership of the engines hasn’t always been plain sailing. After a successful visit to the Essex Young Farmers
Show in May 2014 our Ploughing engine ‘Giant Panther’ built in 1917 fell from the low loader transporting it back to
Barleylands. Unbelievably it fell just 1.7 miles from returning home.
Since that day the engine which works as part of a pair alongside ‘Giant Tiger’ has gone through £110,000 worth of
repairs. The flywheel, boiler and steering mechanism were all damaged and much more.
Arriving back at Barleylands in August both engines have been re painted and polished ready for their grand return!
They are both back in action at this year’s show, the first time they have been seen together since 2013.
Whilst you are at the show this weekend make sure you head down to the ploughing field to see them in action.
