FFENSE
What more can be written about budding superstar Blake Bortles?
His efforts on the field so far have spoken volumes, and the offensive
performance of the Jaguars once again will rest on his broad shoulders.
QB Blake Bortles:
Armed & compassionate
Hey Jacksonville, do you even know what kind of leader you have in Blake Bortles? Instead of looking on
the field, these gems perhaps provide better measure of the man taking snaps for the Jaguars.
1Drafted out of the University of
Central Florida, Bortles is from
Oviedo, Fla., which also is home to
former University of Florida quarterback
Jeff Driskel and former MLB catcher
Hal King. He was a standout at
Oviedo High School, where he
threw for 5,576 yards and 53
touchdowns. But some of
Bortles’ most memorable
moments took place after his
Friday night varsity games.
On Saturday mornings he
was a volunteer buddy for the
Challenger Football League, which
gave youngsters with disabilities a chance
to play alongside high school players,
creating lasting relationships.
2Bortles put part of his
signing bonus with the
Jaguars to good use,
helping pay the tuition for his
baseball-playing brother
Colby, who attends
Ol’ Miss where he is
majoring in criminal
justice. The younger
Bortles, at 6-5, 235,
is a third-baseman/
DH with a threeyear
average of
.272 with 17
HR, 111 RBI
and a slugging
percentage of
.451.
3The Blake Bortles Foundation was established
in 2016 to support children with intellectual
and developmental challenges in their pursuit
of full, independent lives. It provides support
to first responders, with the goal of improving
their ability to safely carry out lifesaving work.
The foundation accepts grant and scholarship
applications in these areas of work, with an
emphasis on autism. “We can make a huge impact
on many people’s lives. Giving back to my
community, especially children, is really important
to me,” Bortles says. “By showing how I lend my
support, I hope to inspire you to help out in your
communities as well.” To donate: bit.ly/2bSbWm1
4The inaugural Blake Bortles JaxPAL Football
Camp took place in June. It provided 500
local boys and girls the experience of a
lifetime – learning skills like agility, proper stances,
throwing techniques, catching techniques and
much more from current and former NFL players,
city leaders and college coaches. Among the
volunteer coaches were teammates Chad Henne,
Paul Posluszny, Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson,
former NFL players Ernest Wilford and Drayton
Florence, along with Jacksonville Mayor Lenny
Curry and Sylvester Pickney of the Jacksonville
Children’s Commission. The mission of Police
Athletic League of Jacksonville, Inc. is built on
the idea that a young person who respects police
officers is much more likely to respect the laws
they enforce. JaxPAL provides for more than 2,200
at-risk Jacksonville children every year.
5Bortles has captured the imagination of a
rabid fan who makes sure he seems larger
than life – a la Chuck Norris – @BortlesFacts
on Twitter. Here are a couple of samples: Blake
Bortles is undefeated in the Octagon. #UFC200,
and “Peyton Manning retires holding the NFL
records for most passing yards and touchdowns, but
he never beat Blake Bortles.”
An influx of veteran and rookie talent has left a decidely faster, stronger
and more determined roster. One of those rookies, Myles Jack, took a
rough-and-tumble path to Jacksonville. Now, he’s glad to be here.
LB Myles Jack:
A rookie’s journey
BY KENNETH AMOS AND PHILLIP HEILMAN
jack
The path that Myles Jack took to the NFL over the course of the past
five months would make most grown men cry. It’s a sometimes
brutal story of injury and honesty, whispers and determination,
intrigue and fulfillment.
Many believe that Jack, drafted as a junior linebacker out of UCLA, is
the ideal cog to help fulfill Jags’ head coach Gus Bradley’s desire for uptempo
defensive schemes.
That’s a lot of pressure to put on a young man who turned 21 on Sept. 3.
This Jack, just like his namesake (hint, us), is new to the Cultural Core.
By way of suburban Seattle and Los Angeles, soon his sideline-to-sideline
defensive talents will be on display at EverBank Field for Jacksonville Jaguars
fans. Jacksonville opens the season at home on Sunday, Sept. 11 against the
Green Bay Packers.
Jack says he’s already grown quite fond of Jacksonville and EverBank Field.
After the Jags’ first preseason game, he said, “It felt electric, man. Just
coming in and with what they have done with the stadium and the vibe, it’s
great. There’s little kids swimming in the pools and then they’ve got the bar
area right in the end zone. It’s a very cool place. I can’t wait until the regular
season.”
BLUE-CHIP PROSPECT
Jack was a star running back through his sophomore year at Bellevue
(Wash.) High School. He then switched to linebacker and led his team to
a 14-0 record as a senior. Just a few miles separated Myles from someone
who soon would become very important in his life; Gus Bradley, his future
head coach, who was toiling as the Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator.
It was Bruins coach Jim Mora Jr. who sold Jack on Los Angeles being
the right college for him. According to cbssports.com, before Jack had
played a single down in college, proud mom and astute businesswoman
La Sonjia (a senior executive with MicrosoftStore.com), would purchase a
Lloyds of London insurance policy to protect her then-17-year-old son that
from any serious injury or loss of value in a future NFL Draft.
Jack was the top Pac-12 freshman on defense and offense. He started
12 games at linebacker and one at running back. He ran for a UCLA
freshman-record four touchdowns in a 41–31 win over Washington.
He finished his first season with 75 tackles, the second-most ever by a
UCLA true freshman, two interceptions and a TD on defense. Named
an All-American by Athlon Sports, he received freshman All-America
accolades from the Sporting News; and he was a finalist for the Paul
Hornung Award. After his sophomore season in 2014, Jack was an All-
Pac-12 linebacker once more.
JACK
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5
TRIPPED UP
Jack was widely touted as the No. 1 linebacker in college football in
2015. But during a September practice – just three games into his junior
season – he bumped knees with a teammate during a non-contact drill and
was unable to straighten his right knee. A torn anterior meniscus brought an
end to his collegiate career. He withdrew from school in early October to
rehab and ready his game for the NFL Draft just six months away.
“He’s taking his chips and shoving them into the middle, and we hope he
draws a good hand,” Mora said during a press conference last fall.
By mid-March 2016, Jack still was on the mend. He performed for
curious scouts during a Pro Day at UCLA, then he held a private workout
for the Jaguars in Los Angeles on April 16. Bradley was there to see if
Jack’s rebuilt knee could handle sudden change of direction without giving
him too much time to rest. According to Peter King, writing online in early
May for The Monday Morning Quarterback, Jack recounted that Bradley
threw balls “crazy hard” above his head, two feet to his side and at his
ankles. “[But] I did things they had never seen before,” he told King. “I was
doing some [acrobatic New York Giants receiver] Odell Beckham stuff out
there.”
With the draft set for a Thursday night in April in Chicago. Jack and 24
other stellar athletes were in town the day before to tour the Windy City.
After getting star treatments befitting the instant millionaires each young
athlete was about to become, they would end their day at an NFL “Play 60”
event to mingle with and instruct local kids.
Afterward, it was time to meet the press.
3rd DOWN
A BIT OF A STUMBLE
During a Q&A, Jack was asked about his knee. With just about 24 hours until the
draft, he inexplicably chose this moment to say, “[The degenerative problems are]
there, but it’s nothing extreme. Down the line, possibly, I could have microfracture
surgery — potentially. Who knows what will happen. Nobody knows how long
anybody is going to play in this league. To play three years in this league would be
above average,” he told reporters.
Microfracture surgery refers to a procedure during which tiny holes are drilled into
underlying bone to repair cartilage. Few athletes have ever fully rebounded.
Social media erupted.
Les Bowen, who covers the Eagles for the Philadelphia Daily News, took to Twitter
and said, “NFL source calls Myles Jack ‘a time bomb’ whose knee could give him
several good years, or not. Bone and cartilage starting to break away.”
Legacy media pounced.
Mike Mayock, draft analyst for NFL Network, said, “If everything I’ve heard about
his knee is true, I don’t think there’s a team in the top 10 who can take Jack.
Mora was reminded of his words at the press conference announcing Jack was
turning pro. “NFL teams are very, very conservative, and if there’s any question
whatsoever, they’ll pass on you in a heartbeat. They’re going to take
the sure thing.”
When the big night finally arrived, Jack appeared either unaware
or nonplussed. As he escorted his mother down the red carpet an
NFL Network reporter asked Jack to set the record straight.
Still expecting to go high in the first round, and knowing the
Jaguars held the No. 5 overall pick. a confident Jack shrugged and
said, “Whatever team drafts me, I’ll be at their rookie minicamp.
I’ll be playing this season.”
Get to know: Myles Jack
Jacqui from Jack sat down with Myles Jack to get
to know a little about this Jaguars newbie.
East Coast or West Coast?
I lived on both coasts, but I got to go East. I
love the South.
Any significance behind No. 44?
I wanted to go outside of the box and make
the number its own. Most linebackers are 50,
but I decided to be different.
After whom do you pattern your game?
I couldn’t say a specific person because I
learned watching everybody play… but if there
was a linebacker or two who I like I would say
[Seattle Seahawks’ LB] Bobby Wagner and
[Carolina Panthers’ LB] Luke Kuechly.
What are your pre-game superstitions?
I have to take a nap and a shower.
Best sense of humor in the Jag’s locker
room?
[CB] Prince [Amukamara]
What would your teammates be surprised
to learn about you?
I have three dogs; two pit bulls and a Presa
Canario. I’m a big dog person, so I’m always
kicking it with them. I have a pool in my
backyard — that’s my favorite thing to do.
Can you cook?
I’m good at breakfast. I can whip up breakfast
all day — biscuits, eggs, sausage, bacon,
omelets — all of that.
What has been your favorite football
moment?
The first time I started a game in [college]. It was
the second game of the season and first play
of the game I made a tackle. That was a really
cool moment. It just clicked and the rest was
history from there.
If you could have one do-over in life, what
would you do?
I would have taken basketball more seriously.
Will you keep reading Jack if we tell people
it’s named after you?
Yeah, that’s dope!
4th & LONG
RECOVERING THE LOST YARDS
Mother and son made their way to the camera-laden Green Room,
where, according to King’s report, they were joined by Mora Jr. and
Jack’s agent John Thornton. Also on hand to celebrate in style were Jack’s
brother Jahlen, his grandmother, girlfriend and personal trainer.
Jack was hopeful, with good reason.
“There is confidence that a team in the mid-to-late teens will serve
as a draft floor for Jack, so a fall out of the first round is unlikely. Jack
believes this, and several sources believe the same,” wrote Ian Rappaport
for nfl.com.
Soon, Jacksonville was on the clock and excitement was palpable.
“With the fifth pick for the 2016 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars
select Jalen Ramsey, defensive back, Florida State,” announced NFL
Commissioner Roger Goodell.
More names would follow but Myles David Jack, once considered
a top-five lock, would not hear his this evening gone wrong. Friends
and family were left to try to console him. Mora gave Jack a piece of
paper on which he had written: (Dan) Marino: 27, (Aaron) Rodgers: 24;
(Randy) Moss: 21; (Troy) Polamalu: 16. Each future star had seen their
stock slip, too.
Jack’s free-fall created a feeding frenzy of speculation and insinuation.
ESPN.com’s Darren Rovell even reported, “A source with knowledge
of the policy says that Jack will start to collect if he falls to the 45th pick
in the draft and will get about $60,000 per pick after that. That means
Jack will collect north of $1 million if he slips into the third round, but he
would have to fall into the early sixth round to collect the entire policy. ...”
Was Jack the unwitting victim of a smear campaign by agents
representing other linebackers? Possibly, given one tidbit from Jason La
Canfora, writing for cbssports.com.
“This Myles Jack stuff is getting blown way out of proportion,” he
reported an anonomyous NFL executive as saying. “I checked with our
medical guys, again, and this stuff just is not true. It’s not something we
would be worried about. Some agent or some team must be behind it.
We’re not taking a linebacker there (in the first round), but if we were we
wouldn’t have any problems taking him. We passed him without any real
issues. This kid is a great player. ... This is getting totally blown out of
proportion.”
King’s reporting mentioned that it was Mora, who before the draft,
had several conversations with the Jags’ Bradley. In one, he recalled
saying, “Don’t be the fool that doesn’t take Myles Jack. This is a kid
who smiles in every practice. He’s the hardest worker and he loves
football. I know you, and this is your kind of guy.”
On the draft’s second night, Jaguars General Manager Dave Caldwell
orchestrated a trade with Baltimore to nab Jack near the top of the
second round. The team did so because its doctors did not believe Jack
would need the dreaded microfracture surgery.
“Doctors are like scouts and personnel evaluators,” Caldwell
explained to King. “Every doctor has an opinion, and ours consulted
quite a few cartilage experts. We don’t feel Myles will need
microfracture [surgery]. Our feelings never changed from the Scouting
Combine to the medical recheck.”
A BRAND NEW SET OF DOWNS
With the NFL season almost here, Jack seems ready to turn the page — along with the
whispers and innuendoes of draft night — into a dream scenario.
In his first professional workouts, Jack showcased fluidity, athleticism and agility, but wasn’t
being used in dropback or cover situations. As the knee continued to heal, he still needed to reestablish
quickness, the bursts of speed and the changes of direction needed in the pros.
Jack told reporters he was glad to be back on the field. “You figure out what the tempo is
like. All of this is very valuable; I’m just trying to learn and I’m excited to go to the film and see
what I can improve on.”
He absorbs gems about his position from 10-year veteran middle linebacker Paul Posluszny.
“I get good advice from him every day. … He has given me a lot of tokens, honestly. Really
just try to get better every day, learn from everybody else and try not to make the same mistakes
that the guys in front of you make. Just be clean and be crisp when it’s your time to step up.”
And Jack is glad to have landed close to home.
“I grew up in [Dacula and Suwanee] Georgia, so kind of being down here in Florida reminds
me of my days growing up in Georgia. I love it. The food here is great. I’ve kind of gotten used
to the weather. It’s a great place to be. I love Jacksonville.
“It’s really cool, me being new to the NFL and coming into the situation. I’m just trying to
get a feel and a grasp for all the hype around. The Jaguars are everything. It’s really cool to be
a part of a good team. That’s what you want to be a part of is a team that wins and goes to the
Super Bowl. I’m excited to be a part of this team and get some wins and see what we
can do.”
And Jack knows the team’s loyal fans are ready for a
winner, too.
“Most definitely,” he said. It’s crazy, man.
Going into Publix to get groceries and stuff,
people are always stopping you. The spirit for
the Jags is 100 percent.
“It’s a very exciting time.”
And that’s a fact, Myles David Jack.
1st & 10 AGAIN
A day late and
a dollar short
A day after Myles Jack was
drafted, ESPN’s Adam Schefter
tweeted, “Dr. James Andrews,
who examined Myles Jack in
December, told the UCLA LB
today (April 29) that he does not
need micro-fracture surgery.”
John Thornton, Jack’s befuddled
agent, offered, “I wish these
doctors/trainers would have
shared concussion info like they
are sharing “alleged” Myles Jack
knee info?
#TheShield JohnThornton (@
The curious timing certainly cost
Jack. Despite inking a fouryear
deal worth $6,334,442
($2,806,868 guaranteed) based
on the league’s rookie wage scale,
Jack paid a steep price for his
slide out of the first round.
Appearing on the Rich Eisen Show
in May, Jack spoke candidly about
the surreal first night of the draft.
“It was, honestly, humiliating. It
was embarrassing having to sit
there, and afterwards walking out,
having my girl to my left, my mom
to my right, my grandmother to
the right of her and having to look
at them, it was a tough feeling,”
he said.
Lunch With Matt About Jax
CURTIS DVORAK IS
UP TO THIS SUPER
FOOD CHALLENGE
BY MATT PITTMAN
jack
Matt Pittman
Curtis Dvorak
Today’s lunch date: Curtis Dvorak
Reporter, First Coast News • Entertainer
For 19 years Curtis Dvorak
put on a mascot suit, entertained
and earned legions of fans. He
turned Jaxson de Ville into a
main attraction. No matter if the
Jacksonville Jaguars were winning
or losing, fans wondered: What
would Jaxson do next?
Bungee jumping and zip lining
into EverBank Field, antagonizing
opposing players and letting the
world know that “Towels Carry
Ebola” were just a few things that
Dvorak did while playing his role
as entertainer.
“The art of being a mascot,
which is a performance art to me
and the other good mascots out
there, there is a skill involved in
taking a suit that never changes
it’s expression and showing every
emotion,” he said.
Aside from working game days,
Dvorak spent much of his time
in the community making public
appearances. The toughest ones
came after a loss.
Dvorak didn’t stay out of the
public eye for long after retiring in
2015. You can see him every day
on the First Coast News program
“First Coast Living” and on “Good
Morning Jacksonville.”
He says “First Coast Living”
allows him to “talk with amazing
people from our community. The
stuff I do on “Good Morning
Jacksonville” is basically what I
was able to do as the mascot: twoto-three-minute
video skits about
events and parts of Jacksonville
that are great. I’m so lucky to
have Rob (Mennie, president and
general manager) over at FCN.
When he hired me he said ‘We are
hiring you to be you.’ That meant
the world to me.”
Now on the periphery of the
business, Dvorak loves the way the
Jaguars are evolving.
“I’ve not seen this much talent
on our roster in a long long time,”
he said. “We have all of the pieces
that you have to have to win. We
have one of the best receivers in
the game. We have a quarterback
who is easily in the top 10. If our
defense can maintain, we can be a
successful team.”
Naturally, Dvorak wants to
see a winning season and, of
course, the playoffs “But I really
want the team to win for [head
coach] Gus [Bradley]. He needs a
winning season. “I don’t want him
to be fired simply because he and
[his wife] McKayla are amazing
people. Their heart for doing good
is so impressive and so genuine.
The impact he can make in this city
… you can’t put a number on.”
For this lunch Dvorak chose
Super Food and Brew.
“For my body, I’m not out there
burning the calories like I did in
the suit. I’ve gotten into healthier
eating, more of a plant-based
diet. When I come to Super Food
the food is fresh and tastes good.
When I leave here after lunch I
feel good. I also like the vibe of
being Downtown, in the middle
of everything. The food is always
great. Usually the company is
good … other times, you’re here,”
he said once again rendering his
audience speechless.
OKTOBERFEST
AT THE NEW
INTUITION ALE WORKS
BY MATT PITTMAN
jack
Zicke zacke, zicke zacke, hoi
hoi hoi!
A new gridiron season is upon
us, meaning it’s time to head to
INTUITION ALE WORKS’ new
Downtown location to celebrate
Octoberfest in Jacksonville.
Dust off your dirndl dress or
lederhosen and join these fine folks
at their days-old location — Noon-
8pm, Sept. 17 — for a tasty selection
of classic brews, live music
from the Swinging Bavarians,
German-inspired eats, the crowning
of the festival king and queen
And, what would Oktoberfest
be without a barrel roll, brat toss or
stein-holding competition?
Sausage Paradise will be on-site
selling nine, hand-made German
sausages served with all the trimmings
and Community Loaves will
be baking up soft pretzels.
12 jack | SEPTEMBER 7-20, 2016
On-site parking will not be
available the day of the event, so
use the parking garage located at
999 E Adams St.
Three ticket packages are
THE BEST GAME DAY EXPERIENCES
YOU TOLD US WHERE
TO WATCH THE JAGUARS
Mike Field:
Without a doubt Dos Gatos. Not
only do they make the best drinks
in town (and perhaps the world),
but they do free shots for every
Jaguars touchdown scored and
regulars bring in food pot luck
style. Plus, no Skynard will be
played during the game... ever.
Without a doubt, the best seats each Game Day are at EverBank Field.
Of course nothing beats being there in person, but those seats, concessions
and souvenirs cost real money.
When it comes time for our Jacksonville Jaguars to line up this season,
you should know some of the best places in the Cultural Core to spend
your hard-earned green. Why not go where you’ll be positioned to root for
the home team while consuming vast quantities of great food and, most
importantly, ice-cold beer? You can do all of this while surrounded by
friends, fans and new faces, all in the comfort of your own booth or table.
Some faithful readers and co-workers were eager to voice their
opinions and help you find a favorite place for food, football and suds.
So visit these #JackApproved spots for Game Day deals and help cheer
on our Jags!
get to know
OH, SNAP! CARSON
TINKER LOVES HIS
RIVERSIDE LIFESTYLE
BY COURTNEY CLARK
jack
Since signing with the Jaguars
in 2013, Alabama native Carson
Tinker has fallen in love with
Riverside. He says it’s loaded with
culture.
“It’s just been really cool to get
to know different kinds of people
from different backgrounds,”
Tinker says of the neighborhood’s
diversity. “I don’t ever leave Riverside
unless I have to.”
The Jaguars’
long-snapper
even convinced
teammates
Jason Myers
and Chad
Henne to
at least
consider
moving to
Riverside.
Tinker, 26, enjoys getting to
know people and delving deep into
the community.
The fourth-year veteran says
Jacksonville has the feeling of a
big city with small-town roots.
Tinker’s go-to lunch spot is
the Goal Post (a fitting name)
Sandwich Shop in Avondale. He
particularly enjoys the Riverside-
Avondale Luminaria celebration,
and he frequents the Riverside Arts
Market with wife Annie at least
once a month.
This summer, Tinker added
kayaking to his abundance of interests.
He says he usually launches at
nearby Stinson Park at the foot of
the Ortega Bridge.
“I think Stinson Park is the
prettiest view in Jacksonville. I
love going out there,” he said. Tinker
admits it took a while before
he finally learned to hit the water at
just the right tide to prevent bottoming
out.
“If it’s low tide, you’re not
going to be able to get back. I
learned that the hard way,” he
said.
Exercising his mind also
appeals to Tinker, who nonchalantly
mentions that he can solve
a Rubik’s Cube fairly quickly.
“They’re not that hard,” he says.
“I used to be able to do it in
under a minute.”
And before preparations for the
2016 season finally ramped up, the
down-to-earth long snapper probably
caused several double-takes
among fans seeing him helping
out a few days each week at Bold
City Brewery.
“Believe it or not, NFL guys
get bored in the off season,”
Tinker says. He asked the
Miller family, owners of the
popular Riverside gathering
spot, if he could come
by to learn about the art
of brewing.
This, from a man
whose resume includes
a national championship
with his
home state’s
Crimson Tide in
2009. Signed
by the Jaguars
as an
undrafted
free agent
in 2013, before last season Tinker
parlayed his steady performance
into a substantial contract.
But the specialty center didn’t
have any qualms about paying his
dues and starting at the bottom at
Bold City.
“They didn’t give me any
kind of special treatment,” he said
recalling his first day moonlighting.
“I was doing grunt work.”
Tinker’s outgoing personality
doesn’t allow him to believe he is
any different from anyone else. He
has been known to spend his free
time enthusiastically interacting
with his fans.
“I’m just a normal guy, I feel
like,” he says of his willingness to
spend time among his admirers. “I
just happen to play football.”
Tinker is fond of Jacksonville
fans, labeling them genuine in
their football interests. Rather than
just asking for a photo or a selfie
and walking away, he says Jags’
fans tend to spend time their time
with him asking about the team.
“I kind of see myself as more
of a fan than a player sometimes,”
he says.
Hell or High Water
Texas brothers Toby (Chris Pine) & Tanner (Ben
branches of the bank threatening to foreclose
on their family land. For them, the hold-ups are
just part of a last-ditch scheme to take back a
future that seemed to have been stolen from
under them. Justice seems to be theirs until they
find themselves on the radar of Texas Ranger,
Marcus (Jeff Bridges) looking for one last grand
pursuit on the eve of his retirement & partner
Alberto (Gil Birmingham). R. 102min.
Duval ’Til We Die!
There is only one way to tailgate this football season and that’s
with Bold City Brigade and the Teal Street Hooligans.
Tailgaters meet on “THE SLAB” before each home game and
experience a pregame ritual unlike any other.
What can you expect from a BCB and TSH tailgate? Loud music,
cheering fans and amazing food, of course. If you want to see 200
people running in a circle then chugging beer, yep, they’ll have
that, too. And there’s always Santa Claus tackling a Christmas tree
decorated with beer cans, but you’ll have to wait for the holidays to
see that one.
where to laugh
These days, who really knows what makes a presidential candidate
electable?
The Second City troupe has joined forces with daily web magazine
Slate to present “Unelectable You” at FLORIDA THEATRE.
It will be an evening of comedy, insight and topical musings.
Through scripted and improv comedy and audience interaction, the
collaborative production will feature writers and personalities from
Slate to spotlight the humor to be found along the campaign trail.
The satirical muscle of Second City will harness the often
contrarian and cutting edge voice of Slate to take aim at the November
election, the candidates, spin doctors and even Slate itself. The result
will be a thoughtful, funny and self-aware evening of entertainment.
