Getting the most out of your fitness center membership
Dennis D. Jacobs,
Contributing Editor
You have made a New
Year’s resolution to get in
better shape and you figure
getting a fitness center
membership — or making
better use of an existing
membership — would be a
good start.
Now what?
The answer to that question
depends on your fitness
goals. Are you trying to lose
weight? Are you trying to
build strength? Are you trying
to become the next Mr.
America? You probably
want to pick a fitness center
that has expertise in helping
people achieve their specific
goals.
For example, if you’re
looking for a fitness center
that can help you shed
unwanted pounds, Anytime
Fitness in Orland Park
might be a good choice. Ken
Howard opened the facility
two years ago after going
through his own personal
weight-loss struggle.
Howard grew up in Maywood
and was an athlete at
Fenwick High School in Oak
Park. From there, he walked
on to the Purdue basketball
team and was good enough
to make their practice squad.
When his basketball career
ended, however, he began to
put on the pounds.
“Just like a lot of athletes,
when you’re playing days
are over, you continue to eat
like you’re still an athlete
even though you don’t have
the output to keep those calories
from sticking to your
ribs,” Howard said.
Howard, 43, lost both his
parents to heart disease and
said he struggled emotionally
with their deaths.
“I was in a fog,” he said.
“I didn’t really know which
side was up.”
His weight increased to
more than 200 pounds for
the first time in his life. He
Ken Howard (middle), owner of Anytime Fitness in Orland Park, lifts a pair of free weights along with facility manager
Izabella Jamrocha (left) and personal trainer Ellen Kelly. Photos by Dennis D. Jacobs/22nd Century Media
recognized he needed to
make a change.
“One day I just looked in
the mirror and said ... what
would my parents want me
to do in a situation like this?
Do I cave in and fold or can
I step up to the plate and
handle it and try to make my
stumbling block into a stepping
stone?”
Howard chose the latter
route, starting a program
called P90X. His success
with the program inspired
him to open Anytime Fitness
at 11033 W. 179th St.
Howard is certified as a
personal trainer and also is
an authorized P90X trainer.
P90X is short for Power
90 Extreme and was developed
by celebrity fitness
trainer Tony Horton. It utilizes
a variety of equipment,
including free weights, pullup
bars and yoga blocks.
Go insane
Anytime Fitness offers
P90X classes and also Insanity
workout classes.
Anytime Fitness Insanity instructor
Izabella Jamrocha is
another weight-loss success
story. Three years ago, she
weighed nearly 300 pounds.
“I reached a point in my
life where I was chronically
depressed and I didn’t like
the way that I felt,” Jamrocha
said. “A lot of people
are shocked when I tell them
the transformation."
Jamrocha, 29, took the
necessary steps and she
said through hard work and
perseverance, she lost more
than 100 pounds. Then she
saw an ad in The Tinley
Junction (owned by 22nd
Century Media) newspaper
seeking a manager for Anytime
Fitness.
“I was dabbling with the
idea of getting into fitness,
but I wasn’t 100 percent sure
that’s what I wanted to do,”
she said. “But when I found
the ad in the paper, it was
like a sign I couldn’t ignore.”
“Now I’m a personal
trainer, 130 pounds lighter,
and about half the size that I
used to be,” she said.
Now she wants to help
others achieve the same
success, through programs
like Insanity.
“The format of Insanity ...
helps target stored body fat,”
Jamrocha explained. “Insanity
is a phenomenal program
because it does very challenging
moves that you don’t
need any equipment for, you
only use your own body.”
If you’d rather do your
own thing, like chasing that
Mr. America title, Anytime
Fitness has plenty of equipment
to help you achieve
your goal. In addition to
free weights and weight machines,
there are treadmills,
ellipticals and bikes.
“Each one has a personal
television and cable box,”
Jamrocha noted. “We get
like 60-70 different cable
channels. I always encourage
people to come in and
bring headphones when
they work out in case they
get bored, so they can work
out for longer.”
Escape the ordinary
If you’re looking for a
workout that’s out of the ordinary,
you covered.
“We also do the suspension
training here, which is
a great workout just using
your own body weight,”
Jamrocha said. “So, unlike
some workouts where
you’re lifting heavy weights
to build muscle, the TRX
is good for shaping and
sculpting. It helps elongate
muscles.”
There’s also unusual
equipment available.
“We have battle ropes,
which is kind of nice because
not many facilities
have them unless it’s a
training studio,” Jamrocha
said. “You can get a really
cool upper body workout in
with those. Just doing those
for 30 seconds, I guarantee
you’ll break a sweat.”
Jamrocha said the most
common excuse people
have for not working out
is that they don’t have the
time. At Anytime Fitness,
members can’t use that excuse
because they literally
hold the key to their own
success. Members are given
a special key fob that gives
them 24/7 access to the facility,
365 days a year.`
Challenge yourself
No matter your fitness
goals, Challenge Fitness
in Lockport can help you
achieve them.
“There’s really something
for everybody,” Challenge
Fitness Manager Ben
Ragle said. “Our membership
here includes a lot.
Our base membership gets
you access to the fitness
center and gets you access
to the locker rooms, steam
room, whirlpool and heated
lap pool. ... Membership
always has its privileges
here.”
An annual membership at
Challenge Fitness is $259
for Lockport residents and
$319 for non-residents.
Members receive discounts
for tennis and racquetball
court rentals, as well as fitness
programs.
“We offer over 40 classes
a week, everything from
Body Jam to the Les Mills
system,” Ragle noted.
“We’re a franchisee of Les
Mills. We’re able to offer all
the classes.”
That includes Body
Pump, Body Step and Body
Combat, which Ragle described
as “along the lines
of cardio kick boxing.”
There’s also Body Jam, a
dance-style fitness class.
“It’s insane,” Ragle said.
Diagnosis gives Frankfort man a ‘wake-up call’
Palos Community
Hospital committed
to diabetes program
Staff Report
A few months ago, Mark
Hoops lost his younger
brother to kidney cancer.
Depressed, he turned
to food to help him deal
with it.
“I was doing a lot of emotional
eating late at night;
it was my way of coping,”
he said. “I got super heavy.
I wasn’t exercising. My
body just quit.”
Hoops, 51, of Frankfort,
concealed how he was feeling
for four or five months
because he did not want to
worry his family, who had
already been through so
much. But he felt tingling
in his arms and feet and
was out of breath when
walking up stairs. He knew
he needed to seek help.
He made an appointment
with Dr. Richard DeJong,
his family physician with
Palos Medical Group. He
was diagnosed with Type
2 diabetes, which accounts
for 90-95 percent of all
people with the disease.
Hoops’ diabetes was in
the early stages, and he
immediately began taking
medication to help control
his blood glucose levels.
“That’s when I started
getting serious about taking
ownership of my diabetes,”
he said. “Just by changing
what I eat and exercising, it
has made seismic shifts in
the way I control my diabetes
and manage my life.”
A registered dietitian
from Palos Community
Hospital’s Nutrition Counseling
and Diabetes Program
Services talked with
Mark about monitoring his
blood glucose, helped him
adjust his diet and provided
motivation for necessary
lifestyle changes.
“Our goal is to equip patients
with the knowledge,
skills and tools they need
to successfully manage
their diabetes and delay or
prevent many of the complications
associated with
the disease,” said Lela Iliopoulos,
a registered dietitian
who serves as dietitian
supervisor for Diabetes
Program Services at Palos.
Hoops says the one-onone
time with the registered
dietitian was “phenomenal.”
They talked through
strategies, goals, what to
eat and how to count the
values of the foods he eats.
“I walked out with
marching orders, and I’ve
followed them every day
since,” he said.
With diet and exercise,
Mark lost nearly 70
pounds, averaging roughly
1.5 pounds a week. His
ultimate goal is to lose
about 20 more pounds,
which would put him at
the weight he was when he
got married.
Hoops said he does not
see having diabetes as
a detriment.
“It caused me to wake
up,” he said. “I actually
consider my diagnosis to
be something that helped
me get back in control of
my life.”
dedication. I’ve found that if I just make
doesn’t feel like as much of a chore. Don’t
give up! If you missed a day or two, or you
splurged on cookies or something, don’t
One of the newest fitness programs formulated
by Mills, a former New Zealand
Olympian, is Grit.
“It’s kind of like small-group training ...
formulated by a world-class development
team,” Ragle said.
Ragle said Grit includes strength, plyometrics,
and cardio training and refreshes
every three months.
“We have just about everything under
the sun that you can think of as far as
health, wellness and fitness goes,” Ragle
said. “Personal training in a group setting
has been really big for us, especially our
Largest Loser program.”
The Largest Loser program is similar
to the popular NBC television program,
“The Biggest Loser.” A personal trainer
leads teams through workouts designed to
help participants achieve their weight-loss
goals. Prizes are awarded to individuals
for the largest percentage of weight lost,
the largest percentage body fat reduction,
and the most inches lost from their waistline.
The members of the team with the
most weight loss also receives awards.

Beyer Chiropractic has treatment options for thyroid conditions
Staff Report
Losing weight and living a
healthier lifestyle is a popular
New Year’s resolution;
but for many, diet and exercise
alone doesn’t cut it —
and it may not be their fault.
Research suggests there is
an estimated 20 million cases
of undiagnosed hypothyroidism
in the United States,
a chronic condition that
causes abnormal production
of thyroid hormones affecting
the body’s metabolic processes.
Researchers regard a
lack of comprehensive testing
in mainstream medical
practices as one of the main
culprits to the finding.
“Traditional medical approaches
to thyroid conditions
are over 50 years old,”
said Dr. Stephen Beyer. “It
only recognizes one type of
thyroid malfunction, when
in actuality there are 24 specific
ways the thyroid can
be dysfunctional. In most
instances, individuals seeking
treatment are receiving
antiquated care and are not
being diagnosed properly.”
Through advancements in
medical understanding and
approaches, most thyroid
problems can be managed
well if properly diagnosed
and treated. A lot of times
this can be done naturally,
without any harmful drugs
or side effects.
Diagnosed with a lowfunctioning
thyroid condition
at the age of 18, Corey
from insomnia, weight
this new treatment, that film
has been lifted. The weight
started falling right off, I
slept better, and the pressure
was gone – It’s been
life changing.”
When asked what makes
his methods so different
from general procedures,
Beyer attributes research advancements,
new methods
and a more natural, functional
approach.
“What we do is unique,”
Beyer said. “We do proper
testing - not guessing - to
find out what is really going
on with your body. Then we
focus on fixing the cause,
not covering the symptoms.”
The difference?
Proper testing and a very
powerful “neuro-metabolic”
or functional approach in
the treatment of thyroid conditions.
This approach has
given relief to many who
have suffered for years under
the traditional drug/hormone
approach.
Alice suffered from a variety
of symptoms including
weight gain, fatigue, vertigo
and brain fog. She started
seeing results immediately
after seeking treatment at
Beyer Chiropractic Center.
“My kids are excited to
have their mom back,” Alice
said. “My husband is excited
to have his wife back, and
I’m excited to have my life
back. And it was all done in
a 16-week program.”
Common symptoms of
thyroid conditions include:
fatigue, difficulty managing
weight gain/loss, cold hands
and/or feet, heart palpitations,
difficult or infrequent
bowel movements, depression,
insomnia, lack of motivation,
night sweats, mental
sluggishness, thinning hair/
hair falling out,and dryness
of skin and/or scalp.
Pilates retains popularity
among exercise trends
Lauren Finkler,
Contributing Editor
Infomercial greats such as
The Shake Weight, abdominal
toning belts and Skechers
Shape Ups swept the
airwaves in recent years, and
the items are likely buried in
some local closets, awaiting
a rebirth in popularity. And
while each creation was certainly
innovative, I think it is
safe to say the items have not
proven to be long-lasting solutions
for physical fitness.
But through all the change
— there have been a few
constant exercise forms that
have triumphed, and among
those is the practice of Pilates,
a trend that continues
to hold the spotlight.
Studios are scattered
throughout the southwest
suburbs and beyond — and
in Homer Glen, Refresh Pilates
and Wellness Center
has found plenty of success
in its first year of business.
Co-owners Helen Owens
and Stephanie Owens-Burkhart
not only spread the
practice to their clients but
also practice Pilates on a
personal basis. For Owens-
Burkhardt, it is a daily routine,
while Owens said she
practices roughly three times
a week.
The two are not only fellow
Pilates lovers, though,
they are also mother and
daughter — and that just
goes to show the universal
appeal of Pilates across
various age groups and lifestyles.
“It’s a fun way to exercise,”
said Owens, who like
her daughter is also a physical
therapist. “There aren’t
many exercises you can say
are fun. It’s fun and highly
beneficial for stretching, for
strength, for balance and obviously
for cardio. You can
get an incredible workout
with Pilates.”
Owens’ daughter agrees,
having initially come to
practice Pilates while in
school for physical therapy.
Owens-Burkhart said she
witnessed Pilates effectively
being used as a rehabilitation
tool for professional ballerinas,
those with spine injuries,
those with neck pain
and countless others. The
versatility of the practice
was like no other, she said.
The 30-year-old Owens-
Burkhart credits her wellbeing
to her diligent practice
of Pilates, and said she also
has noticed improvements
in core strength, balance and
posture. She said the latter
is especially important as a
5-foot-1 woman.
“We found that there were
really not any Pilates programs
run by physical therapists
alone in our area,” said
Owens, noting the benefits
of carrying out rehabilitation
and post-rehabilitation with
the same person.
And so the family changed
that, providing a necessary
crossover to rehabilitation
and long-term wellness.
“We see a big population
of clients that come back because
it’s the only thing they
can do without hurting themselves,”
Owens said.
One especially popular
course at the Homer Glen
business is the Spine Care
Reformer Pilates, according
to the owners. The class
caters to those with back
pain and aims to improve
and maintain the health of a
participant’s spine. Owens-
Burkhart said those with a
history of back or neck pain
will especially benefit from
the class, which focuses on
spinal mobility, flexibility
and abdominal strength.
“The whole key with Pilates
is getting you strong
from the inside out,” Owens-
Burkhart said.
Time to play ‘vein myth or fact’
with Midwest Vein Center
Dr. Barbara Terpstra
Varicose veins are
purely hereditary
Myth! While one does
have a higher chance of developing
varicose veins if
they run in the family, one’s
lifestyle also determines
risk for developing varicose
veins. How can one reduce
this risk? Think circulation!
Long periods of sitting or
standing can inhibit blood
flow, so try and keep blood
pumping throughout the day.
Whether one sits at a desk
or stand for hours at a time,
make sure to take breaks and
move around. Exercise is another
way to increase circulation
and reduce the chance
of developing vein disease.
Varicose veins can
affect health
Fact! Varicose veins are
caused when the valves
in veins that direct blood
flow malfunction. Instead
of pushing blood through
a vein in one direction, the
valves loosen and blood
pools by being pushed back
and forth. This pooling of
blood affects circulation and
can cause you the feelings of
pressure, tiredness and pain
in one’s legs.
Insurance often covers
varicose vein procedures
Fact! Most insurances
cover varicose veins procedures,
as they are considered
more medical than cosmetic.
At Midwest Vein Center,
there is an insurance team
to help patients through the
filing process. Each insurance
carrier is different, and
at Midwest Vein Center, the
goal is to make sure patients
know how much a procedure
is going to cost. For some
people, there is an out-ofpocket
cost beyond what
their insurances providers
cover. For other people,
health insurance covers their
procedures at 100 percent.
Varicose vein procedures
involve vein stripping
Myth! Vein stripping is a
procedure of the past. Thirty
years ago, having veins
treated meant undergoing a
highly invasive procedure.
Patients had to be placed
under anesthesia, and the recovery
time involved being
bedridden for weeks. Things
have changed. Today’s varicose
vein procedures involve
a local anesthetic and a laser;
patients can be in and out of
the procedure in an hour an
drive themselves home, even
go to work the next day.
Discover a Healthier,
Happier You
If excess weight is limiting your life, weight loss surgery may be right for you.
eight loss surgery is a powerful tool for helping people get
their health back,” confirms Christopher Joyce, MD, FACS,
FASMBS, Medical Director of BMI Surgery at Silver Cross
Hospital. Silver Cross is a seven-time national “100 Top
Hospitals” honoree and is Will County’s only American Society for
Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
Everything you’ll need to succeed is in one place: pre-surgical counseling, diet and exercise instruction,
state-of-the-art surgical and post-surgical facilities, peer support, and resources to help you maintain your
healthier lifestyle.
Select Procedures
“We offer all surgical options, including laparoscopic gastric bypass, gastric banding with the LAP-BAND® and
REALIZE® systems, gastric sleeve, and revisional bariatric procedures,” describes Dr. Joyce.
“While our surgeries have high safety standards, patients need to be aware that any surgery has risks,” he
reminds. “We help patients assess those risks when considering the benefits of better health.
“Surgery is a tool to help speed your weight loss,” he adds, “but it’s the program you choose that makes that tool
work best.”
He recommends choosing a multidisciplinary Center of Excellence with a successful track record and a high
volume of patients: “Surgeons at such Centers are more experienced and better able to anticipate and respond to
patients’ unique surgical needs. That translates into better outcomes.”
Donna Morris is slim and healthy 11 years after her
bariatric surgery performed by Dr. Christopher Joyce.
Once obese at 226 pounds, this mom has kept most of
the weight off. After losing 100 pounds, her high blood
pressure, asthma and back pain are completely gone.
And she has more energy than ever before.
Donna was the first patient to have laparoscopic
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery at Silver Cross in 2003.
Gastric bypass is considered the “gold standard” of
bariatric surgery because it has the highest weight loss
success rate. Patients at Silver Cross lose an average
of 81% of their excess weight 12 to 18 months after
surgery. Five years after the surgery, the average
weight loss remains high at 78% indicating the durability
of the surgery.
She contributes her long-term weight loss to the
support she still receives from Dr. Joyce and his team,
regular exercise, and healthy food choices.
Free informational sessions are held every Wednesday at
5:45 pm in Pavilion A on the Silver Cross Hospital campus.
New Lenox-based
business works to make
clothes dryers safer
Hidden buildup in clothes
dryer vent is a fire hazard
Staff Report
Most people know they need to clean out
their dryer lint tray between each cycle, but
what lurks behind the wall is just as important
for safety and avoiding fire traps. Lint
is the villain – lint that has been allowed to
build up and linger too long in the dryer exhaust
vent.
It is estimated by the U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission and the U.S. Fire
Administration that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers occur annually. These
fires account for an average of 20 deaths,
370 injuries and more than $88 million in
property damage. “Failure to clean the dryer
vent” was the leading factor cited in the U.S.
according to the Fire Administration reports.
Joe Enzenberger, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard,
opened his New Lenox-based business
in 2009 and knows all about these kinds
of dangers.
“It is something very few people know
about or think about,” said Enzenberger,
whose company specializes in dryer vent
cleaning, repair, alteration and installation.
“It is the leading cause of dryer fires.”
Lint accumulation also can cause dryers
to stop working or to work inefficiently. A
dryer vent clogged with lint can add as much
as $18 to $24 per month to energy costs.
“Improper venting causes problems, as
well,” he said. “The dryer exhaust duct and
connections should be made of rigid metal
or semi-rigid metal and secured with metal
heat-resistant tape rather than duct tape. I
often find plastic or foil accordion-type material,
which can easily trap lint and is more
susceptible to kinks and crushing.”
Warning signs include: clothes are taking
more than one cycle to dry, especially jeans
and towels; no lint visible on lint screen; dryer
repeatedly stops during a cycle; clothes
have moldy smell after dry cycle; clothes are
very hot after a dry cycle; the top of the dryer
is hot to the touch while running; there’s excess
lint left in clothing.
“This has been a consumer education process,
but it’s hard to get the word out,” Enzenberger
said. “Most don’t call until they
have a serious problem with their dryer.”
He suggests people treat clothes dryers as
a household item in need of regular maintenance.
Consumers can protect dryer performance
and promote safety by cleaning
the lint screen between each use, ensuring
the connection between the dryer and wall
is made of compliant material and remains
un-kinked, and having the dryer exhaust
duct cleaned regularly. Dryer manufacturers
recommend inspection and cleaning at
least annually.
The holiday season is a great time to have
an inspection and cleaning of clothes dryers
and dryer vent systems.
Presence Neuroscience Institute provides
care for brain, spine and nervous system
Staff Report
Presence Neuroscience
Institute formally opened
in 2011 at what was then
Provena Saint Joseph Medical
Center. But the history
of what has been ranked the
“top neuroscience program
in Illinois” started well before
that time, and the program
continues to build in
magnitude and reputation.
“What is most important
are the outcomes our patients
experience,” explained Beth
Hughes, regional president
and CEO of Presence Saint
Joseph Medical Center in Joliet
and Presence St. Mary’s
Hospital in Kankakee. “Our
neuroscience program has
grown steadily, accepting increasing
numbers of transfers
from area hospitals of patients
who require complex
care. We are pleased to be
able to partner with those organizations
to ensure patients
receive the highest level of
neuro care while keeping patients
closer to home.”
Specialists in neurology,
neurosurgery and neuroendovascular
intervention are
together in the Neuroscience
Institute, making collaboration
across all disciplines
seamless. Together, they
team, armed with the newest
methods and technologies, is
able to expand the window
for successful treatment of
stroke — even reverse some
of the effects of a stroke.
“Time is still of the utmost
importance when dealing
with stroke, but working directly
with first responders
and utilizing advanced techniques,
we are often able to
not only save a person’s life
but also their functionality,
even if more time has
passed than ideal from first
symptom,” explained Dr.
Aamir Badruddin, neuroendovascular
interventionalist
at the Presence Neuroscience
Institute.
A nationally accredited
physical medicine and rehabilitation
unit, with additional
CARF accreditation
for specialty stroke rehabilitation,
has expanded at Presence
Saint Joseph Medical
pilates
From Page 8
Owens-Burkhart compared it to the process
of building a home, as a strong foundation
is imperative to achieving the best overall
product.
The elder Owens said she has seen clients
progress from beginner to advanced classes,
gaining strength and flexibility along the
way. And she has especially noticed that the
senior population benefits from the classes.
“It’s amazing to us to see that the senior
population really remarks that they haven’t
felt so good in so long,” Owens said.
“They’re more flexible but also they feel
more confident in their balance.”
But, as Owens-Burkhart has observed
in her personal practice, Pilates appeals to
other generations, too, and the business’ clients
range from teenagers to those who are
in their 80s.
“Everyone is welcome,” Owens-Burkhart
Center. Featuring private patient
rooms and state-of-theart
equipment, the unit provides
daily intensive therapy
for patients and posts high
return to mobility and function
results.
The institute’s team of
experts also collaborates
to find the most appropriate
treatments for tumors,
aneurysms and other brain
disorders, as well as treating
the full range of spine treatment
options.
Advanced technology
— including 3D imaging,
measurement and real-time
mapping — allow extraordinary
accuracy in diagnosis
and treatment.
“Our diagnostic neurology
lab, neuro intensive care unit
and CARF-accredited inpatient
rehab, outpatient physical
therapy and Neuro Day
rehab enable us to provide
comprehensive and complete
continuum of care,”
according to Dr. Tamir Hersonskey,
a neurosurgeon and
medical director.
said. “There’s no experience necessary at all,
and not only do we have group classes; we
also have one-on-one classes.”
