NEWS Time Out for Business Week OPPORTUNITY TIME Out Australia CEO Michael Rodrigues, who was born and raised in Liverpool, heads a lineup of successful entrepreneurs and experts including Knafeh Bakery founder Ameer El-issa and speakers from the Western Sydney Univer- sity Launchpad at Liverpool’s Young Entrepreneur Ideas evening on September 15 at Casula. Mayor Ned Mannoun said Council’s decision to focus on young entrepreneurs recognised the importance of innovation and youth in the western Sydney economy. “Liverpool is one of the youngest areas in Sydney with 45 per cent of our population under 30 years old,” Mayor Mannoun said. “The number of people in our city is growing and we need to create successful businesses which provide local goods and services and employ local people. If you want to start a business, the Great South West is the place to do it.” Time Out Australia CEO Michael Rodrigues said he was excited to return to his home town to share his insights into running a successful business. “South West Sydney is very different now to when I grew up. For a number of years Liverpool sat still while other parts of the met- ropolitan area evolved. But now it’s maturing so fast and I think there’s real sense of excite- ment and possibility among the young people who live here,” Mr Rodrigues said. “As is the case elsewhere, digital media and technology have combined to provide unprecedented opportunities for forward thinking businesses to win new audience and spread new ideas. The event will be held 6pm to 8pm, Thursday September 15 at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, 1 Powerhouse Rd, Casula. The event costs $15. Small Business week runs from September 12 to September 16. Blacktown childcare gets a new look One of the state’s largest childcare operations has been re-branded in a deliberate move to shift its image from only providing child care to one of also providing learning and development. Blacktown City Council’s Kids’ Early Learning is the new name and look for one of NSW’s pioneering child care services. “We have been in the childcare business for more than 40 years and currently have some 1,700 children across 25 centres, making us one of the largest childcare operations in New South Wales”, said the Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Stephen Bali. “As a not for profit, Council-owned and operated business, we offer the assurance of appropriate monitoring and governance with a commitment to providing safe, affordable and accessible support services to the community. “Blacktown City Council offers more than child minding. “The name ‘Children’s Services’ may have been appropriate 40 years ago, but we offer much more than looking after children for parents. “The name Kids’ Early Learning better describes what we actually have been doing for 40 years and places a greater emphasis on the positive contribution Blacktown City Council makes to improve our community. “What was ‘Children’s Services’ for more than 40 years has always been more than simply looking after children. “The new name better explains what we do and what we aspire to,” Mayor Bali said. There is now a greater emphasis on areas such as educational programming and practice, children’s health and safety, staffing arrangements, relationships with children, collaborative partnerships with families and communities, leadership and service management, Mayor Bali said. We’re also working to increase our communications and engagement with customers and the community to increase the overall profile of Kids’ Early Learning as a leading provider in childcare, he said. “The change of name reflects Council’s commitment to become a leading service provider that gives our community’s children the best start to life and learning,” he said. Kids’ Early Learning continues to be owned and operated by Blacktown City Council and offers families a range of programs and services for children aged between 6 weeks and 12 years old, from long day care, preschool to before and after school care, vacation care and family day care Ċhildren can be enrolled in Kids’ Early Learning by simply visiting the website www.kidsearlylearning.com.au or by contacting staff on 9839 6868. Blacktown is building the best Blacktown City Council is a multi-award winning council, having received 13 national and state awards so far this year. “Blacktown City Council has never won so many awards in such a short period of time,” said the Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Mayor Bali. “It shows how much of a change the council has made in the way it operates. “We have a long tradition of winning awards, but this last six months has seen a virtual avalanche,” he said. “The one that I am probably the proudest of is the 2016 NSW/ACT Parks and Leisure Australia Award of Excellence that was won by Mount Druitt Swimming Centre. “At one stage the plan was to close the Centre, yet within a couple of years it has become an award winning recreational centre for the entire community. “Even in winter it is popular, with the family fish-in drawing once again booked to capacity,” he said. Blacktown City Council’s award for the way it planned recreational spaces in the north west growth was another outstanding achievement, he said. The Council also won awards for its 2015 Annual Report, Community Report and Community Calendar, the White Ribbon accreditation campaign, the restoration of Melrose House and the innovative way its stormwater planning led to better use of water that would otherwise run down drains, Mayor Bali said. Mount Druitt Swimming Centre was also named as a finalist Blacktown City’s Stormwater Education Program won the Stormwater NSW Excellence Award in the Excellence in Policy or Education category for its project titled Expanding the Reach of Stormwater Education in Blacktown City. NSW Local Govt Excellence Award (Special Project Initiative) for the White Ribbon accreditation project RH Dougherty Award (Highly Commended) in the Excellence in Communication category for its White Ribbon accreditation campaign RH Dougherty Award (Highly Commended) Reporting to your Community category for the “Sporting City” themed 2015 Annual Report, Community Report and Community Calendar.
