opportunity to speak with the author, enjoy light refreshments, and purchase books with a
percentage of proceeds benefiting the children’s book clubs.
This year authors included:

Senior Fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute Emma Sky; renowned author and
interior designer Florence de Dampierre; great-great grandson of Theodore Roosevelt,
Kermit Roosevelt III; frequent contributor to the New York Times Jesse Browner; former
inspiration….Thank you for making him and his story available to our community.” ~Carmen
JAMIE GAGARIN ART GALLERY
Through a juried selection, we introduce the community to varied mediums of art and artists.
Five times a year we exhibit artwork for sale with bi-monthly shows where a percentage of all
sales directly benefit library services. In January and February, we exhibit student artwork
from the Litchfield Public Schools and Litchfield Montessori School. This year, we featured
watercolors, photographs, mixed media painting, and abstract paintings. Artists included Mary
Helen Davis, Emily Kennedy, Tom Hlas, Margaret Reventlow, and Jocelyn Regenbogen.
REVENTLOW EXHIBIT
Through the generosity of the Reventlow Estate, the Library hosted a special exhibit featuring
the artwork of the late Margaret “Peggy” Reventlow. Peggy was a long-time resident of
Litchfield who loved the Oliver Wolcott Library. For many years of her life, she was here at the
library on a daily basis working on the second floor of the library in the offices used by the
Connecticut Volunteer Services for the Blind and Handicap. She was a true friend of the
library: her generous support, her concern that all people have access to information, and
friendly smile always welcomed and inspired us.
It was truly an honor for us to be gifted her work of abstract paintings and a select group of
her renowned sculpture to exhibit and sell. We thank the Reventlow Estate for giving us this
opportunity, Lauren Della Monica for her expertise in curating the Gallery Exhibit, and
everyone who joined us at the opening and viewed the exhibit to celebrate her life and art.
“I was always afraid to walk into an Art Gallery. They are so intimidating…The library’s gallery
makes me feel at ease, that I belonged there… I fell in love with watercolor painting while I sat there
for a meeting, and every day it makes me smile when I see it on my wall.” ~Jesse

CHILDREN & TEEN SERVICES
Throughout the year, the library provides a wide-range of engaging and informative children
and teen events. We also offer materials in various formats for all ages, interest levels and
reading levels. We partner with the school to compliment educational initiatives. We continue
to look for innovative ways to reach and engage children and teens in our community such as
introducing museum trips for those attending our summer book clubs, and expanding our
outreach to go where the preschoolers are.
PRESCHOOL EDUCATION
We provide storytime sessions for infants through age five that incorporate kindergarten
readiness through our weekly programs at the library and our monthly outreach to area
preschools.
This year, circulation of preschool books (picture and beginning reader books) increased by 5%
with 15,015 books being borrowed compared to 14,306 last year.
“OWL inspired my child to be passionate about books. Each week, he can’t wait to select
and take out new books. I don’t know what we would do without it! ~Patti
AFTER-SCHOOL & SUMMER EVENTS
Our after-school and summer events engage children’s minds and creativity without the burden
of tests and homework. We also partner with the schools to help students get their summer
reading assignments completed by offering summer book clubs that feature assigned books.
From classic favorites like Winnie the Pooh to new favorites such as Billy Miller and Chasing
Vermeer to lively family shows like Mr. Magic, our book clubs and summer events let children
experience the power and delight of the written word and excitement of a live event.
MUSEUM TRIPS FOR GRADES 4 TO 9
Last summer, we offered all students in grades 4 to 9 who participated in our summer reading
book clubs the opportunity to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Each
book club read a novel about Vermeer, and then had the chance to view the Vermeer Collection
at the museum.
Connecting literature and art, our museum trip to the MET was a grand success. Almost 50
students participated, with most telling us it was their first time visiting a large museum, and
all telling us what a powerful experience it was to read about Vermeer and then see his work.
“I can’t think of a better way to get our children interested in art and literature and
understanding the connection.” ~Maura

# We improved the accuracy of our reporting with improved statistical information from Wowbrary. We
felt it was more accurate to count only Wowbrary views rather than counting all Wowbrary e-receipts.
We modified last year’s number so that it also reflected this change.
* The OWL is an innovator. We were one of the first libraries in the country to offer personalized service
like our Book-a-Librarian program. As a result, the State Library originally asked us to count this service
as a program statistic, as they continued to explore where this service should be allocated. The federal
and state libraries recently determined that one-on-one services such as our Book-a-Librarian should not
be counted as a program. (It is now counted as a reference question). As a result, the number of adults we
reached through Book a Librarian and exam proctoring (a one-on-one service) was not counted this year.
In order to compare "apples to apples,” we removed that number from our FY14-15, reducing the number
from an average of 423 per month to 385 per month.
