The lifting of the mount Govardhan by Krishna is a mystery to
everyone. It is an unsolved miracle which no science can define. I
have been asked about it by various scientists in various
conferences across the globe but all I always have to say is that it is a
miraculous deed of the Almighty which no Hindu text or scripture
can define. However, the lifting of the mountain proved to be a vital
turning point in the life of Krishna and his kinsmen.
The Gopis and Gopas of Gokula were the lifeline of Krishna who was
ready to do anything for their welfare. However, Krishna was an
incarnation of Lord Vishnu who had taken birth to fulfill an
important mission of killing the demon Kansa and establishing
Dharma by playing a pivotal role in the Mahabharata war. Even after
knowing the purpose of his life, Krishna always remained in two
minds for the thought of leaving his people and going in search of his
mission to faraway land. He always wondered whether his
expedition was worth giving up his love and attachment with the
people of Gokula? However, the lifting of the mount Govardhan
turned a new leaf in the life of both Krishna and the people of Gokula
as it kick started a new chapter in their lives. The incident was proof
enough to affirm that Krishna was none other than God himself who
lifted the mighty range on his little finger with great ease.
The Govardhan Incident
Once, a fierce storm hit Gokula when Krishna deviated the people of
Gokula from conducting the puja offered in praise of Lord Indra. He
convinced them to conduct Gopotsav instead as the cows and their
cattle were their lifeline. Lord Indra got annoyed and brought about
violent storms accompanied by torrent rains. This resulted in the
river Yamuna overflowing and Gokula getting flooded completely.
The people of Gokula started believing that it was due to not
worshipping Lord Indra that such a calamity had hit them.
As for Krishna, he got to rescue his people by hunting for a safe place
to take shelter. Having complete knowledge of the terrain there,
Krishna noticed an opening in the Govardhan parvat which led to a
deep cavern inside. Krishna led all his people, along with their cattle,
to the cavern but it was not large enough to accommodate everyone.
Hence, Krishna lifted the mountain on his little finger and provided

shelter to the entire Gokula-dwellers. They took shelter here for a
few days till the floods subsided completely.
After this incident, Krishna soon left everything behind, including
Radha, his childhood love, only to seek his purpose of life. Krishna
could never forget Gokula and its people, but his duty towards
mankind was above everything else and that is what mattered the
most.
Vrindavan whom he defeated and won over with his flute. These
bulls were aggressive and violent and this one, whom Krishna
invaded, was huge, extremely strong and quite dangerous as well. No
one dared to go near him yet people bred him for his usefulness to
them in supporting their financial needs.
Krishna’s elder brother Balaram had always wanted to kill Hastin
with a single punch. Balaram was the strongest among the boys of his
age. One day, Krishna vouched to ride over Hastin with full
determination in front of everybody. Everyone was shocked to hear
about Krishna’s conquest. The time frame which he put for himself
was before the arrival of the next Purnima (full moon).
Every day, from that day onwards, Krishna would visit Hastin where
he was tied to a tree. Since his childhood, Hastin had allowed only
two people to go near him and attend him. Krishna asked for
permission from them to spend some time with Hastin every day. He
would sit there for hours and played his flute. He would even give
Hastin to eat, he would mix jiggery and straw and give it to Hastin
every day. This turned the bull docile in some time. After a few days,
as time passed by, Krishna one day touched Hastin while playing his
flute. This way, before the arrival of the next full moon, Krishna
became quite friendly with the bull. No one, however, was aware of
this act of Krishna.
On the day of the full moon, Krishna was fully prepared to ride
Hastin. Balaram, along with their other friends, did not want to put
krishna’s life on risk and hence were ready to withdraw the bet but
Krishna would not budge even after Radha trying to convince him
not to do so. Soon after, Krishna approached the bull, played his
flute, gave him his favorite dish to eat and stood close to him. He
then asked Radha to come close to him and stand behind him in a
manner that she could not be viewed by Hastin. Krishna soon leapt
on his back along with Radha. Hastin got excited initially and began
running here and there, but once his entire energy had gotten
exhausted he calmed down and started grazing. This entire incident
of Krishna riding the bull, Hastin, along with Radha turned out to be
the talk of the town.
