Led by Maria Svensson, a professional contemporary

improvise, create and perform your own dances. 

We will also have regular guest male dance teachers from 

visiting dance companies, as well as the choreographer 

of Firkin Crane’s Company in Residence, Luke Murphy. 

And, you will get the chance to join Super Moves, an 

exciting performance project for boys directed by 

Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín.

performance on the Peacock Stage at the Abbey, Dublin.

troupe ‘Sweetie Sit Down’ and design by visual artist Kelly 

Tivnan, celebrates community, and its 

key role in self-actualisation.

a Cork sweet-maker, shoe-maker and furniture-maker 

met two dancers from Vilnius. It is a funny and personal 

 

of Cork and Vilnius - where them and us become we, as

Following a hugely successful run in New York earlier this

the unraveling of a universe, parental love, fear of 

death, personal transformation and enlightenment. The

Choreographed and directed by John Scott, was 

commissioned by Kilkenny Arts Festival. One of Ireland’s 

foremost dance companies, Irish Modern Dance Theatre 

(IMDT) was founded by John Scott in 1991. Recent tours 

include New York Live Arts, Philadelphia Dance Project, 

Kilkenny Arts Festival and Les Hivernals Avignon. 

Scott’s work is playful, dramatic and virtuosic. He works 

with a uniquely rich ensemble of virtuosic Irish and 

international dancers.

Cork’s Dance Artist in Residence at Firkin Crane 2016-2017 

Laura Murphy, Luke Murphy, Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín 

Laura Murphy has been Cork’s Dance Artist in Residence at Firkin Crane since 2012. This 

year she is delighted to announce exciting developments for the programme. She will 

be working with Luke Murphy as co-Dance Artist in Residence and Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín 

as Associate Artist. 

This year’s programme is designed to promote dance in the professional and wider 

community through a range of classes, workshops and projects. Simultaneously 

Laura, Luke and Siobhán will continue with their individual choreographic 

 

CHOREOGRAPHY 

Laura Murphy and Luke Murphy will work on two new choreographic works enriching 

and focusing on their individual choreographic practices. Each will collaborate with 

local, national and international artists. Sharing their work with Cork audiences they 

hope to add to the energy of Cork’s dance infrastructure. Laura will be working 

with developing one compositional score for dance and music; linking the two via a

The Dance Artist in Residence workshops series invites 3 international guest teachers

A workshop developing conscious presence while improvising in performance, and 

enhancing skills connecting technique to composition. Pavel Zuštiak is a director, 

 

performance group Palissimo Company. 

Crossing the Stage’ and Other Scores 

7–10 March 

A composition workshop focusing on what happens when ideas and techniques 

which come primarily from music are translated into movement. Matteo Fargion is 

a composer, performer and teacher. He is a long-term collaborator with Jonathon

Super Moves, last year’s community project for the young

Cork City Ballet has been based at Firkin Crane since 1992, 

where it rehearses its stage productions, and provides ballet 

 

 

 

includes not just the well-loved classics, but also modern and 

contemporary choreography, including works specially created 

for the company by the Artistic Director of the Company - Alan 

 

 

 

Cork Youth Ballet Company was founded in 2015 by Sinead 

Murphy, Director Cork School of Dance, and is based at Firkin 

 

train as a company, producing creative and dynamic new dance 

works. Company members work with local dance professionals 

as well as internationally recognised teachers, choreographers 

and dance artists. While performance and production is the 

primary aim, the dancers in the company are trained classically 

and in alternative dance styles that challenge them and give 

them opportunities to develop their own creativity. This training 

supplements the dancers’ work in their private dance schools, 

while committing to developing and subsequently maintaining 

high artistic qualities and standards, through focusing on the 

dancer’s individual potential. 

The company of 17 dancers is drawn from Colaiste Stiofáin Naofa 

 

Lucy French School of Dance and the Wolf Stage School. With 

ongoing support from Firkin Crane the company rehearses every 

Wednesday night. 

Croí Glan Integrated Dance Company is a professional 

contemporary dance company, which performs work that includes 

both disabled and non-disabled dancers. Firkin Crane is the Cork 

City home for the company. 

Croí Glan highlights the cutting edge artistic value of creating 

performance with diverse bodies, by producing high calibre work, 

which tours nationally and internationally. Croí Glan also provides 

 

with and without disabilities, through introductory workshops; 

ongoing classes; and vocational training in integrated dance.

The Chance to Dance Programme for Groups and Schools has been running very successfully at the Firkin

The students perform in many productions 

throughout the year, with many students 

performing in ‘The Cork Opera House’ panto 

productions. The students participate in Feis 

Maitiu and take drama exams with LAMDA. 

The students all perform in our annual 

Christmas production in ‘The Firkin Crane’ 

and in our summer production at the ‘Cork 

Opera House’.

Singing and Drama under the helm of artistic 

director Irene Warren and Director of Dance,

Aruba Coghlan started dancing at four 

years old and she continues to dance and 

teach dance to this day. In the sixties she 

 

 

She was appointed a Dance Examiner for the 

International Dance Teachers Association 

in 1994. She is a Life Member of the Royal 

Academy of Dancing and The Imperial Society 

and a Registered Teacher at Trinity College 

London and The Royal Irish Academy. Ms. 

Coghlan frequently examines in England and 

abroad and holds master classes, teacher 

training, and private lessons in all branches
