This 26-month project will contribute to the EU’s ability
to prepare personnel for deployment into situations
where skills in peacebuilding and conflict prevention are
necessary. The project will design a flexible curricula
structure in which different compositions of techniques,
methods, and stakeholder involvement can be aligned
to create bespoke training packages for personnel. This
will be supported by a PeaceTraining.eu web platform
featuring a knowledge base, best practice libraries, and
digital guidebooks, and an International PeaceTraining.
eu Symposium. CTPSR will be working with partners
from across the European Union throughout the project.
Peace and Reconciliation in Turkey:
What lessons can be learned South Africa?
The peace talks between the Turkish state and the PKK
have recently collapsed although there were hopes for
reconciliation after 30 years low-intensity civil war. During
and after the peace process, one of the most referred
cases was South Africa. The reference was not only
discursive, indeed many Turkish politicians established
contacts with their South African counterparts and
asked for advice; the Turkish parliament was visited by
prominent South African politicians in April 2013 and the
Kurdish movement seek solidarity with the South African
political and human rights actors. The “South African
Model” was at the heart of peace discussions in Turkey.
Dr Bahar Baser has been awarded a South African
National Research Foundation Grant for Early Career
Researchers to undertake a comparative analysis
between the Kurdish Question and the South African
case. It analyses the conditions that paved the way for
a successful process in South Africa, examines where
Turkey currently stands in this framework, and considers
South African perceptions of the Kurdish question and
transnational solidarity for the Kurdish movement.
