2. How do you become a Flemish member of parliament?
When you vote you elect
people to represent you in
parliament. You cannot vote
any person into parliament.
The political parties submit
their lists of candidates
to the voters. Your vote
determines how strong
each party is.
When are elections held?
Every five years elections are held for
the federal parliament (Chamber of
Representatives)
the parliaments of the federated entities
(i.e. also the Flemish Parliament)
the European Parliament
Every six years elections are held for
the municipal councils
the provincial councils
The Flemish Parliament is thus elected
for a period of five years and cannot be
dissolved during this period. In other words
elections cannot be held early. If parliament
no longer has confidence in the government
or in a minister, parliament has to appoint
a replacement.
