ABOUT WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP & PHILANTHROPY
Founded in 2005 by a small group of
individuals and a handful of Tampa Bay
area corporations, WLP advanced a
vision shared by noted philanthropist
Carol Morsani and USF System President
Judy Genshaft: creating the first
women’s philanthropic organization in the
Tampa Bay region focused on developing
the intellectual and leadership potential
of women through the promotion of leadership development, mentorship,
philanthropy, community engagement and scholarly excellence. Fast forward
10 years and WLP - now 250+ individual and 18 corporate members strong
- has helped stimulate numerous transformational gifts to benefit the USF
System, and has directly raised over $3 million and deployed almost $1
million in grants, scholarships, and programmatic funding to assist countless
female students, faculty members, and women in the our community – a sign
that USF WLP has been a trailblazer in advancing women's philanthropy, an
area now gaining national exposure.
Over the past decade, WLP has awarded
nearly $600,000 in scholarships and
devoted countless mentoring hours
to over 300 students, and and has
provided research awards to 17 female
faculty members. WLP presents a wide
variety of educational and leadership
development programs annually at all
three USF System institutions and in our
surrounding communities, and has formed formal mentoring partnerships
with USF’s Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement, Office of Veteran
Success, Athletics, Transitional Advising Center, the Honors College, USF
St. Petersburg and USF Sarasota-Manatee. WLP will launch USF’s first
student-led symposium in the spring of 2017, and is also on the forefront of
promoting women in STEM throughout the USF System through strategic
partnerships with the Florida Center for Cybersecurity, USF Health, the
USF STEM Collaborative, the Tampa Innovation Alliance, and the Society of
Women Engineers.
Helping Women Lead, Achieve & Take Their Place at the Table Palma Ceia
A 2012 report by the Credit Suisse Research Institute, Gender Diversity and Corporate
Performance, showed that businesses are more successful with women in the boardroom.
Following a 2012 study of 2,400 companies globally, the Institute found that net income growth
over the past six years averaged 14 percent in companies with women directors, eclipsing their
counterparts without female board members, which posted only 10 percent growth. Catalyst, a
research group focused on women’s advancement to senior leadership, found that Fortune 500
companies with more women directors outperformed those with fewer women board members on
a broad range of financial indicators. So why does half the population constitute only 17 percent of
the representation on Fortune 500 corporate boards? Join us as we convene a solutions oriented
conversation on this topic, helping you identify the core competencies necessary for successful
board leadership, and determine the best path to attaining appointment to a corporate board seat.
Staying Relevant...On Purpose Esplanade
The cyclical nature of women’s lives means that we are constantly
going through a series of transitions physically and mentally. Yet PRESENTED BY:
while Americans now live stronger and healthier lives, and more and
more women are embracing transition, aging still carries negative
connotation. Our culture is constantly promoting anti-aging products
and cosmetic procedures to present the possibility of looking
youthful in order to feel good about ourselves. Why do we need to
look young to feel good? Why not learn to embrace who we are, even
the physical imperfections? Rather than focusing on the appearance
aspect of aging, this session will explore how daily doses of fun can
improve brain functioning and memory, boost physical and emotional health and enhance social
connection – all of which allow us to enjoy life at any age. Participants will walk away from this
session with a lot of laughs and also practical takeaways for a light-hearted approach to remain
youthful in mind/body and spirit and to tackle the 50+ transition by thriving and not just surviving.
When women are empowered to lead and given the tools and
it then that women are not compensated to reflect our power?
Why it is that even in today’s age, U.S. women make 77 cents
for every dollar a man takes home, on average? Attendees will hear from senior executives from
Failing Fast University Club
There's a common trait shared by many successful people: they act quickly, even if they may fail.
Before you begin to set in motion a series of actions – a project which may fail or succeed, faster
or slower, sooner or later – you already have in mind some kind of outcome – the effect – that
you’re aiming for. It could be a financial one, a stakeholder one, a process one, a people one. With
that in mind, there are going to be a range of causes that may or may not result in that effect.
With a vision in place, you can set objectives. Along with those objectives, you can establish
measures of success (measures of failure?) with associated targets, to help guide the actions/
initiatives. Supporting the why/what/how, you’ll now determine who/when/where – very tactical
things. So, failing faster is really just a current colloquialism for the same thing. In the end, though,
all its saying is: try. If it doesn’t work out, you’ve probably learned either a lot of good things for
the next attempt or a decision to focus on something else. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.
How to Know When to Leave Esplanade
Most of us have done it—stayed in a job, a marriage, or a volunteer leadership role so long
we started getting complacent, or worse. Then there's the reverse problem—leaving too
early and ending up with something that isn't what we hoped for. Knowing when to leave is
a tricky business. We often hear, "Before you jump out of one boat, you’d better make sure
the other one floats." Sometimes opportunities seem like a great fit at first, but when you
start spotting leaks, you're already standing on deck with the water pooling swiftly around
your ankles. This panel will share their stories and help you to identify key signs to look for
so you know when a move you're considering is the right one to make at the right time.
