INTRODUCTION TO THE FESTIVAL BY CEO MARGARET MCDONALD Cobaw Community Health supports communities through offering a range of counselling, alcohol and other drugs and emergency relief services as well as social support and respite programs. Cobaw’s goal for the 2016 Cobaw Community Health Mental Health Week Festival is to raise awareness, educate and engage local residents by offering a range of events which assist in addressing mental health conditions. Cobaw is a proud advocate in providing mental health and wellbeing programs across the communities of the Macedon Ranges. We recognise the importance of understanding mental illness and the impact it can have on individuals and families. Unfortunately mental illness is too common affecting one in five Australians each year. At least one third of young people will experience an episode of mental illness by the age of 25 years. These statistics demonstrate the strong need for effective mental health interventions. Thanks to the efforts of our generous contributing agencies and staff members we have been able to create a unique and varied program designed to provide individuals with the opportunity to reconnect towards positively managing their mental health. We encourage and welcome all community members to come along and join us by attending one of the many exciting free events being offered across Mental Health Week. As a community we can work together to help overcome challenges and adversity associated with mental illness. FEATURED EVENT MEN, MASCULINITY & SPORT: EVERYBODY ‘SCRUM’ MOVIE SCREENING & Q&A PANEL Friday 14th October, 6:00pm – 9:30pm The Norma Richardson Hall, St Mary’s Woodend Presented by Cobaw Community Health & VACountry Scrum is an award winning Australian documentary that tells a story of determination, acceptance and brotherhood that’s changing the way people view sport, masculinity and homosexuality. A visually arresting documentary that reveals what it means for these incredible tough men to be able to compete and be accepted for who they are, raising many interesting questions about men, masculinity and sport. In addition to the screening there will be a Q&A panel featuring a key selection of local professionals who specialise in or work closely supporting men. The panel will explore and answer questions about the expectations and pressures placed on men and how this affects their mental health. *This event is proudly supported by VACountry & Rainbow Network
