to Brevard County with visits back to his hometown. Then,<br />
a few years back, the “Harry Meets Sally” thing happened<br />
to them and after a few months of long-distance relationship<br />
they tied the knot. Meaning that Judi gave up her job<br />
to move to Malabar where Jerry had lived for the past 18<br />
years. It was quite different from the busy lifestyle in Miami<br />
and, as Jerry put it, “the wife needed something to do.” His<br />
simple comments and analyses are hilarious, somewhere<br />
between comedy and philosophy. He’s, without doubt, a<br />
“one-man show.”<br />
But it was Judi who had to deal with a new life in the<br />
boondocks aka Malabar. And since a good relationship is<br />
based on compromises, two years later both of their life has<br />
changed and the couple has moved to Satellite Beach. Judi<br />
loves the beach, and the new house is five minutes away<br />
from the bar.<br />
Judi: “Once we decided to buy a bar, we did our research<br />
for a concept, found this location and went to work.”<br />
When Whiskey Beach opened its doors the bar was totally<br />
remodeled, a large outside patio built, and kitchen and bathroom<br />
were rebuilt. The roles they play in their new business<br />
are clear - Judi manages the bar and Jerry “fixes whatever is<br />
broken.”<br />
It was not just the bar itself that needed some serious<br />
clean-up, also the reputation had not been good for some<br />
years. A challenge that not everyone can overcome, especially<br />
someone who has no experience in the hospitality<br />
business and is new in town. But Judi is tough and losing<br />
is not an option for this couple. “We found great employees<br />
and bartenders and the customers that visited came back.”<br />
Over time they met more and more locals and Judi made it a<br />
point to take suggestions and feed-back. “The first year was<br />
pretty brutal,” admits Judi but then the little bar became a<br />
hit with locals and tourists alike. “Working with Jason Noon<br />
helped us to figure out the right entertainment, also for the<br />
slower weekdays. Our Tuesdays featuring an Open Mic<br />
with Mike Burns and the Trivia Thursdays have been very<br />
successful.” Just lately Jerry added a nice stage to the club<br />
for live bands on weekends. For Judi it is important that<br />
ladies and families feel comfortable to come to Whiskey<br />
Beach, enjoy entertainment, good food, and friendly service.<br />
The sports crowd is accommodated with 8 TVs, NFL<br />
Ticket, and Miami Dolphin fans will find a new home.<br />
Whiskey Beach prides itself in offering over 100 different<br />
whiskeys and excellent pub food. Judi: “We buy the<br />
better grade food and many of our sauces are home-made.”<br />
Especially the burgers are very popular here. “That’s because<br />
it has pork belly in it,” says Jerry. Nothing reminds<br />
of the dive bar it used to be. “Except the prices,” says Jerry.<br />
“We are a native oasis with dive bar prices.” - True, if you<br />
don’t count expensive whiskey that cost $75 per shot that is<br />
also available.<br />
