PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
=
It has been a truly remarkable 2014 season for Abbotsford Juniors Football Club (AJFC), both on and off the field. Our
reputation within the Canterbury District Soccer Football Association (CDFSA) and our local community as a club which
delivers first class service and a family atmosphere to our club members has certainly been enhanced.
There were plenty of highlights in 2014. We surpassed 700 registered players for the first time in the club’s history. We
welcomed our first under 15 girls and over 45 men’s teams. A second over 30s women’s team was also introduced,
increasing our Women’s football footprint. Our commitment to junior football was translated into record
numbers in the under 6s and under 7s. The season was capped off beautifully with our under 17/1s and over 35/6Bs
winning their respective Grand Finals.
Thank you to our sensational volunteers. Once again in 2014, the club was fortunate enough to benefit from a strong and consistent
volunteer base across both coaching and team management. The 2014 AJFC Committee have been active and focussed, delivering a
year of sustained investment in our coaching training and development and the social fabric of the club. Thank you to the AJFC
Committee for their tireless dedication and commitment in executing our vision of being recognised by players, coaches and families to be
the most progressive, forward thinking football club in Sydney.
As the club moves forward and builds on our achievements on and off the field, it is clear that a broader base of volunteers will be required
to maintain the standard of football and infrastructure we have come to expect here at AJFC. I would urge all our members, players,
parents and supporters to consider if they can help in any way. Even the smallest investment of time and energy will be gratefully received
as we enter our historical 50 th year. We have exciting plans for AJFC with major improvements to Campbell Park being on top of the list.
As we close the 2014 season, I would like to thank all our parents, players, supporters, members and volunteers for choosing football and for
choosing AJFC. It has been our pleasure to stage a positive and successful season and we look forward to welcoming you again in 2015.
The code and the club is in really good shape and it’s been great to be part of it.
2014 saw another rise in the number of females registered at AJFC.
Included in the mix were two teams in the O30 W division, one team in each
of the U9, U12, and U15 age groups and two teams registered in each of the
U8, U10 and U11 age groups.
A total of 143 females played in the Girls and Women’s competition.
In addition to that, there were 13 girls that played in the mixed competition and 37 girls
registered in U6s and U7s.
A total of 193 females played brilliant soccer throughout the season and helped to further
promote AJFC throughout the soccer community.
Following the lead of our first O30W team who returned from last year, we welcomed our
WOMEN’S
& GIRLS
FOOTBALL
second O30W team into the competition, which shows the increased interest of playing
soccer across all age groups.
Our O30W are also putting their stamp on soccer at CDSFA and are leading a push to make
changes to existing rules around player eligibility to come into line with rules that currently exist
in the men’s competition.
Our U15 Girls formed a team virtually overnight and faced the challenge of balancing high
school commitments and training and coming up against experienced opposition. Many of
the girls had not played soccer before but did a wonderful job of developing their skills and
results throughout the season.
The U12 Girls had their first season on a full field and were committed to putting effort into
extending both their fitness and prior skill level to rise to the challenge that soccer presents
when entering a competitive age group.

Our ‘non-competitive’ teams in the U8-U11 represented AJFC strongly.
U11/1 A ‘Wolvettes’ went through the season undefeated and the U8/1 ‘Spikes’ had only 1 loss. It was exciting to
watch the skills and good sportsmanship that the girls in all these age groups displayed.
The CDSFA has acknowledged the growth of Women’s football and along with training courses also held a Women’s
forum this year which will provide outcomes and recommendations on how to support and develop female
involvement in soccer at all levels.
Watching a number of the girls and women’s grand final games on the last weekend in August this year that were
hosted by AJFC was like looking at our future.
While many of the other clubs have had years for their females to develop, it is exciting to think that AJFC has now
completed its fourth year with teams in the Girls and Women’s comp and each year the depth and quality of our
female teams gets stronger.
As the needs of our females change at AJFC, so will our focus. In 2015 we will develop plans around grading, team
size and females in the role of Referees.
Congratulations to all the female players , Coaches, Managers and parents who continue to enjoy and contribute
to Females being part of Football.
. Wowee!! Has the season finished already? It only seems like last week
when we were hosting our Registration & Family Day at Campbell Park
back in February.
And what a season it has been. Record registrations in our Small Sided
age groups (Under 6's through to Under 11s), a mild winter which
SMALL
SIDED
FOOTBALL
minimised the number of games called off due to closed pitches, the best World Cup ever
seen and a new batch of devotees of the greatest game on earth in our local
community. It doesn't get much better than this.
As I have shared on a number of occasions throughout the year, we are extremely
passionate at Abbotsford Juniors about providing the right environment for the children to
experience our world game. Our aim is to be THE model club within the Canterbury
Association for Small Sided Football participation and experience and we take every
opportunity to influence our association, Football NSW and the FFA to improve the game
for children.
Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to coach and manage the
children this year. The quality of experience you have provided the kids has been second
to none and you should be extremely proud of the way you have conducted yourselves.
Thank you also to the parents and friends who have come along to support the kids on
a Saturday morning. Growth, participation and enjoyment FOR THE KIDS has been your
priority and this has come through in every aspect each week.

It is so refreshing to be involved in a community where results take a back seat to providing a
positive, safe and fun learning environment for children through football. We are quickly
becoming the envy of many other clubs in our association and you should share our pride in
this achievement as you have contributed enormously to it. Well done.
Finally, I would like to congratulate all the kids for their achievements this season. Whether it
was scoring the winner, making a great run or tackle or just running around and having fun
with some new friends I trust you have enjoyed your time playing our wonderful game. I look
forward to seeing you all again at our Registration & Family Day in early 2015!!
Have a great summer.
2014 AJFC TEAM REVIEWS
Under 8/1 Girls
This Season has been a great learning
season for the U8/1 Girls, the Mighty
Abbotsford Spikes and myself as
coach. We have also had some great
support from our parents that have
stepped up when asked.
The Spikes have enjoyed a successful
season with the team nearly going
through the entire season undefeated.
Our first and only defeat was to
Concord which has turned into a great
little rivalry, with each team beating
the other once during the season.
Hopefully we can continue this rivalry
for many years to come.
The pleasure I have experienced as a
coach is seeing the girls grow in
confidence in themselves and their
team mates and executing the drills
we practiced on a Wednesday night
and putting it to use in a game.
pleasure…seeing the girls
grow in confidence in
themselves and their team
mates and executing the
drills we practiced…
The girls have even started becoming
aware of their positions and their roles
within the team. The team have really
enjoyed their football this season,
which has bred a great team culture
and this has shown on the field with
their results this season.
I would also like to thank Jeremy
Lockhart and Matt Bone for their
support this year.
Jason Le Roux, U8/1 Girls Coach
With just a few additions, the “Spikes”
fielded a team largely unchanged
from last season.
The team has been very fortunate to
have had dedicated and committed
coaches for the last two seasons and
under the leadership of Jason Le Roux,
the Spikes displayed a desire to win
whilst showing sportsmanship all along
the way. The girls’ skills improved
remarkably throughout the year,
especially those that hadn’t played
before. With management employing
a “rotation policy”, all of the girls
enjoyed experiencing the different skills
for every position.
AJFC 21

The season was made even more
enjoyable by the support provided by
the parents at practices and on game
days, and not forgetting the siblings for
their cheers from the sidelines.
All in all, ending the season largely
undefeated has been a great
achievement for all involved and the
girls are already talking up next
season.
Matthew Bone, U8/1 Girls Manager
Under 8/2 Girls
It was the first season that the U8/2
girls’ team have played together.
Some girls had not played before,
some girls had played previously in
AJFC SSF teams. The first few weeks of
the season were chaos! The girls were
all bunched together each trying to
have their own touch of the ball and
playing in their own direction,
sometimes in the wrong direction!
However, with patience, planning and
a whole lot of encouragement the girls
began to think for themselves, direct
each other and play as a team. The
girls, the parents, the manager
/coaches have enjoyed the season
playing together and working as a
team.
…with patience, planning
and a whole lot of
encouragement, the girls
began to think for
themselves.
We are proud of the progress that
everyone has made and look forward
to playing together next year.
Under 8/3s
I am so proud of the boys. What
started off as a team of individuals
playing well turned into a group of
individuals working together as a
team. The first half of the season they
were up against formidable opposition
teams.
Players such as William and Luca and
Harry showed initial confidence on
Game Day and it started to rub off
against the other individuals in the
team.
William was the rock of the team. He
could be relied on to really steer the
ship even when getting beaten 5-0 he
was solid and the rest of the team
members looked up to him and started
to believe during the season that they
could do anything.
William was an absolute gem at
training and had a fantastic
season. When the season turned
around and they won all the remaining
games it was William and Harry who
consistently brought the team
together.
What started off as a team of
individuals playing well
turned into a group of
individuals working together
as a team.
Callum was our goal scoring machine.
He was a bit timid at first but as soon as
his confidence grew he was absolutely
on fire. A great person to have in the
team and will go onto to become one
of Australia's finest goal scorers if given
the opportunity.
Luca reminds me of me. His effort and
drive to never give up was amazing
to watch. He never stopped giving his
best during training and on game day.
It was a pleasure to watch Luca grow
as a team member. Luca went from
kicking the ball as hard as he could to
nobody to passing and set up the
strikers in formidable positions.
His confidence grew big time and he
reaped the benefits of becoming a
great player.
Adrianno was probably the smallest in
stature but biggest in heart in taking on
the big opponents.
AJFC 23

When on song there was no opponent
that he was afraid to get stuck into
and attempt to either beat and score
or defend and steal the ball. As his
confidence grows he will be a
tremendous asset for the team.
Dionysious was another boy that
turned up on game day ready to give
it his all. During the first half of the year
he was a bit shell shocked by the
transition from U7 to U8 but when he
settled after the first quarter of the
season he became a sensational
player. D would play in any position
from Defender to Striker and was not
afraid to take on the big guys either.
D has the skills and courage to
become a great player and it was a
privilege to see him grow.
Giordano came into the team after
everybody else but settled almost
immediately. Boy this kid has flare. He
idolizes Messi and truly believes he can
one day supersede Messi which is
really exciting to watch. This is a kid
with confidence. But what has
impressed me most is his ability to
recognise that if want to play well you
must play well as a team. I have seen
G grow into a player who truly believes
in the team doing well and also
believes he can do well. And he did.
Vincent, Adam and Harry I have
explained above. Without these three
boys giving their best for the team,
giving their best week after week, the
skeleton of the team would not have
been formed and nurtured.
As a coach I have really enjoyed the
journey from U6's to U8's for a lot of
these boys.
But this year was a pleasure and a
privilege to guide, protect, and give it
all my energy and see these boys grow
to a team playing together and for
each other.
..a pleasure and a privilege to
guide, protect and give it all
my energy and see these
boys grow as a team playing
together and for each other.
Coupled with this is the support and
fantastic personalities of the mums and
dads of the parents who supported
their children, the team, the club and
supported me. A great bunch of boys
with a great set of parents.
Nick Lancuba, U8/3s Coach
AJFC 24

Under 8/7s
We started in division 4 with a team of
rough diamonds. The early results
looked more like AFL scores but what
we lacked in skills we made up for in
determination and we finished up the
season in division 7 with a string of
exciting crowd pleasers. Although our
victories were few in number, we
succeeded in having lots of
fun, encouraging each player's
talents, and in developing the
teamwork over the season.
Our future Socceroos were:
Spencer - a fearless natural
goalkeeper with a flair for the diving
save who later proved himself an
equally capable goal scorer.
Ben - a determined and skillful midfield
achiever - He gave his all every
week and developed a great
on-field awareness and a solid shot on
goal.
Conor - Ever dependable in midfield
and often the last line in defence,
Conor also showed us some World Cup
inspired silky passing skills.
Luka - a stalwart in defence with a
rocket launching right foot that saw
him score several long range goals
and make countless very welcome
clearances.
Zeke - Always gave 100%, whether as
a stand in goalie, full back or striker, a
trait that helped him be the top goal
scorer in his first season.
Harrison - was a very welcome late
addition to the team who brought a
solid tackling ability and also
developed his goalkeeping skills.
Jett - the smiling assassin, was always
cheerful, fleet of foot and armed with
a menacing shot on goal. A deadly
combination all round.
Jasper - The pocket rocket with an
unfathomable power to weight
ratio, tackled way above his weight
and outran many a frustrated
opponent.
p.s. We were also very glad to have
the help of our super subs (friends and
fellow AJFC players):
Austin , Darcy, Evie, Sean & Will.
Here's to next season!
Under 8/8s
All of Abbotsford Team 8/8 have had a
fun year playing and learning together
- there have been wins, losses and
draws - all played showing great
sportsmanship.
The extra half hour of training they
dedicated to each week has paid off
with everyone's skill levels improving,
making each game more exciting for
the players and parents.
Every week has been played with high
levels of enthusiasm (when they wake
up!); each goal has felt like a real
team effort and every near miss met
with a team groan in unison.
We mixed the positions up a little this
year, everyone trying 'up front', 'at the
back' and positions in between so
thanks to Thomas (top tackles), Luke
(master dribble) and Oscar (midfield
mastery), Daniel (great clearing),
Jasper (curling corners), Alannah
(defensive dribble), Matty (rock solid
defence), Cameron (speedy wing)
and Alex (the wall in goal).
Every week has been played
with high levels of enthusiasm;
each goal has felt like a real
team effort…
Thanks mums and dads for taking the
extra time mid-week and for all of your
sideline support. Bring on the 2015
season!
Under 9/1 Girls
The under 9/1 girls' soccer squad had a
great season in 2014 coming together
as a team and putting in a spirited
performance each week while always
having fun. They played some
challenging games but
were able to put their weekly training
to good use and continually improve
both individually and as a team. They
showed a strong sense of team spirit
throughout. Well done girls, great
season!
The season was a memorable one,
and one that all players involved
should be very proud of. The
determination and eagerness to train
and turn up on the weekends was
extraordinary.
The determination and
eagerness to train and turn up
on the weekends was
extraordinary.
The season was full of many special
moments, including a great win at
Strathfield Park, which was seen as the
turning point for our season. That win
saw us play better football and results
began to change in our favour.
The development in confidence both
on and off the pitch has improved out
of sight. I look forward to coaching
them all again in the future.
Mitch Harding, U9/2s Assistant Coach
Under 9/4s
The boys have had an enjoyable
season. We had some early tight
matches and managed to win most of
our games during the first half of the
season, whilst the second half was
more challenging as we took on some
more competitive teams that were
promoted. We still managed to win the
majority of our games all year.
The boys have had fun training and
playing together and have welcomed
a couple of new boys to the team this
year.
Our first time coach Shahn has done
an excellent job this year and the boys
have responded well. It has been
great to see the improvement in the
kids over the course of the year.
All the parents have a great rapport
and we will be returning as a group
next year. I would also like to thank
Abbotsford Juniors Football Club for
their great organisation.
Chris Alexakis, U9/4s Manager
Under 9/6s
This year we had 6 boys from our Under
8 team back again with Liam C,
Harrison, Liam M, Harry S, Jonathan A
and Harry G. Plus some shrewd
recruitment in the off-season saw the
addition of Caleb, Jonathon M and
Alex.
Despite a 15-0 loss in the first game
against Five Dock, the boys weren’t
AJFC 28

disheartened and came back with a
nail-biting 1-1 draw the following week
against Hurlstone Park. We nearly had
our first ever win (under 8’s & 9’s)
except for a last minute equalizer by
the opposition. Again, the boys
weren’t upset at the fact that they
had missed out on the win, but instead
were excited to be involved in such a
good contest. This was evidenced by
the comment ‘What a beautiful
second half’.
Yes, Harrison, it was a beautiful second
half.
However, our first win wasn’t far away
when the boys held on for a tough 5-4
victory at home against Balmain. After
leading 5-0 at half-time, the boys may
have taken the foot off the pedal and
expected to coast to an easy victory.
But 4 goals by the visitors in the second
half brought them back to earth and
when the referee blew the full time
whistle they walked away with their first
win and a very valuable lesson learned
about playing for the full 90 (or 40 in
our case) minutes. It was great,
though, to see the excitement on their
faces.
They all had great fun playing soccer –
win, lose or draw.
All in all, we had a great year. It was
very rewarding to see the huge
improvement in skills from the start of
the year through to the finish. The
improvement was a result of the effort
that all of the boys put into training.
This was particularly well demonstrated
by our Most Improved Player, Harry G,
who exceeded all expectations,
particularly his parents, with his
spectacular improvement.
With the monkey finally off the team’s
back, the boys continued to train hard
and improve their skills. This saw the
team finish the year with an equal
number of wins and losses and a few
draws.
But probably the most pleasing aspect
was that the results didn’t really matter.
On the field, the team improved out of
sight, demonstrating their improved
AJFC 29

skills, good positional play, teamwork
and passing and most importantly a
great camaraderie. It was fantastic to
see the boys running in to give their
teammate a hug after scoring a goal.
Whilst all of the boys played
particularly well this year, our Player of
the Year was Caleb Kwan. In only his
first year of competitive soccer, Caleb
demonstrated all of the attributes of a
great player whether he was scoring
goals at the front, making desperate
saves in goal, defending aggressively
or setting up our forwards to score.
It was a close call for Player of the Year
with other notable achievements
being Alex’s rock-solid defence, Liam
M’s great defence and passing,
Harrison’s never-say-die effort in the
midfield, Harry S’s great all-round skills
from goalkeeper to forward, Jonathan
A’s infectious enthusiasm and team
spirit and the goal-scoring prowess of
Liam C and Jonathon M.
And lastly, on the sideline, we had
fantastic (and vocal) support from all
of the parents and grandparents
encouraging the players (and the
coaches). This made the team
particularly enjoyable to be
associated with.
Shannon Cavanagh, U9/6s Coach
Well it was a long, hard season for the
Abbotsford Under 10 Division 1 team:
tough, but character building for
children (and coaches!). With only a
few wins and draws, and some big
defeats, we battled on and had to
swallow our collective prides at times.
Still, the players improved and right at
the end of the season we surprised
some teams. It was a good learning
experience for the kids to realise that
though they are competent players,
there are many players and teams
who are much better than them.
…it was a long, hard
season…It was a good
learning experience for the
kids…
Several of the division's teams finished
near the top of the Kanga Cup. To be
fair, it has to be said that these teams
generally showed greater on-field
discipline and organisation, and most
trained twice a week.
AJFC 30

Despite the many losses and
disappointments, most games were
played in good spirit. The notable
exception to this were the two games
we played against a team from a
suburb located between Belfield,
Strathfield, Burwood and Croydon
Park. But even that was a lesson for the
children in sportsmanship and fair play.
Player of the year was our incredible
goalkeeper Emanuele Mascitelli.
Though some part of his improvement
was simply due to the no shortage of
opportunities, in every game he made
some amazing saves and wowed all
spectators.
"surprise packet" Vaile for keeping
everyone guessing at his true potential,
Seamus Theron's solid defence and
midfield tackling, Jamie Ottaviano for
searing runs down the left, Cooper
Wilson's sheer hard work and
enthusiasm, Reuben Linton for his "take
no prisoners" approach as striker, Oscar
Quessy's amazing energy and for
chasing every opportunity, Ryan
Hodgekiss for his stability at left back
and great left foot distribution up the
field, Gabriel Steel's many forays in
attack on the right, and Anna Dey
where she showed the greatest fight
and determination during our heaviest
loss.
Many thanks to Samantha Hand
(Manager) and Shaun Hand (second
string, stand-in manager) for jovial
encouragement and great support
throughout the season.
Finally, all our thanks to our main
coach Eddy "I am not frustrated"
Ottaviano for his passion and
commitment to improving our team.
Eddy and I spent countless hours
discussing how we could best
approach each player's game and
make the team work better together.
We're not sure we achieved this fully,
but we (generally) had fun along the
way.
Most improved player was Nick
O'Brien. Switching to centre back
about half way through the season,
Nick found his niche in being a solid
defender, taking control of the back.
Highlights for each player were: Jake
Hand's big finishing and free kicks, Riley
Eddy and I spent countless
hours discussing how we
could best approach each
player’s game and make the
team work better together.
Under 10/1 Girls
2014 has been a really enjoyable year
for the U10/1's. Thank you to our hard
working manager Joanne Galletta
and our co-coach Alex Vellar who
brought the technical expertise to
training.
As the season unfolded, the girls
certainly improved their game. All of
our games were fun, but matches
towards the end of the season were
especially enjoyable to watch as their
passing, crossing and shots on goal led
to some outstanding and nail bitting
performances.
Amelia, Emily and Olivia played well as
a rotating forward group, scoring most
of the goals this year from either using
their pace through the middle of the
park or from well-placed crosses and
strikers ready to receive the ball.
This year Andie, Lilli and Abbey
performed a consistently outstanding
job defending, with Andie responsible
for an awesome sliding save in the
game against Earlwood. Lilli took
responsibility for control in the centre
back position and managed well
placed goal kicks and corners with her
huge kicks. This was Abbey's first
season playing football. In no time,
Abbey was moving the ball to the
sideline and getting passes through to
the midfielders like a professional.
All of our games were
fun…especially enjoyable to
watch as [the team’s] passing,
crossing and shots on goal led
to some outstanding and nail
bitting performances.
When the girls rotated into the midfield
or as strikers they were lucky enough to
put the ball in the back of the net.
The engine room of the team was well
and truly in the middle of the park this
year. Charlotte, Harriet, Isabella, Kiara
& Pheobe played crucial roles in both
defending and attacking with lots of
running, tackling and passing.
Everyone had a go at playing goalie
this season. By the later end of the
season though, there was one person
in particular who was keen to play as
goal keeper, which made the
coaches job a lot easier by avoiding
that awkward silence after asking "who
would like to be goalie today?". If
there was a goal keeper award this
year, it would be going to Emily. Well
done Emily, classy effort!
One of the most pleasing comments a
coach gets is from other coaches that
you meet during the year. Several
coaches commented on how well the
girls had progressed in their game and
they were right. I can't wait to see how
they go in 2015.
Under 10/2 Girls
This year's team was a mixture of past
players and new members which
bought a mix of experience and
enthusiasm. Enthusiasm was never
lacking throughout the year even
when we were losing consistently.
However our goal scoring ability was.
We managed to lose many games by
one goal or draw even though we had
many more shots on goal than our
opponents.
The girls, particularly those that have
never played before or those that
have come to football after a period
away took a couple of months to gel
together and understand the
importance of positional play. I as
coach obviously took a while to
establish everyone's most suitable
position in order to utilise their various
talents.
All of the hard work and training
sessions has paid off towards the end
of the season with the team winning
four out of their last six games and a
few of our new players scoring goals,
which was very exciting for them.
I am always impressed by the
determination shown on the
field by the girls and the level
of enjoyment the girls get from
playing a team sport with their
friends win, lose or draw.
Our highlight game of the season was
a dramatic and very exciting 6-5 loss to
Balmain on 27 July at Campbell Park
when the scoring went goal for goal.
As coach it has been most rewarding
to see the development of the girls
skills and interest in football especially
amongst the more inexperienced
recruits. I am always impressed by the
determination shown on the field by
the girls and the level of enjoyment the
girls get from playing a team sport with
their friends win, lose or draw.
Terry Griffin, U10/2 Girls
Under 10/6s
Wow the season went quick! We
commenced our training sessions early
to get the players match fit and allow
the team to gel. With 13 in the team,
only a few had played together last
year. A number of different skills and
drills and fun fitness tasks at each
training session really got the team
prepared for the games ahead.
This year we focussed on positioning,
passing, ball control, fitness and
teamwork. The players developed
some fantastic soccer skills that really
kept the Parents and supporters
entertained, with many nail-biting
AJFC 34

games. The smiling faces and
eagerness to play made all those
tough training sessions worth it. A
terrific season overall with 11 wins, 2
draws and 4 losses.
On behalf of the players, a big thank
you to the Parent’s for your support
and encouragement during the
season. Special thanks to our Team
Manager and Super Mum, Simone
(Oliver's Mum), together with Jan
(Rachel’s mum and half-time
refreshments extraordinaire) and
Assistant Coaches, Nick (Aiden's Dad),
Tony (Toby's Dad) and Peter (Patrick's
on game day. Well done team!!
The U11/1 A Girls were one of the First
teams to join AJFC when the Girls
competition was offered at our club in
2011.
The Wolvettes have completed their
fourth year together, being the FIRST
team in the Girls competition to move
all the way through the noncompetitive
age range, U8-U11.
While there have been a few minor
changes to the team over the years,
the majority of the team has remained
together under Paul Rainey’s
guidance as coach.
This has helped provide the team with
stability and a continual improvement
in their skills and scope for
development.
2014 was another successful year for
the Wolvettes. Scoring 56 goals and
with only 10 goals scored against
them.
The Wolvettes went through the
season undefeated thanks to the
teamwork by all players.
The Wolvettes are looking forward to
the challenge of playing on a full field
and moving into a competitive age
group next year.
The commitment and involvement
from families in getting players to
training and games each week has
shown the support that has kept the
team together and at training it is
often hard to work out if it is the players
or parents that are having the most
fun.
Congratulations girls for your
achievements during the 2014 season
and for being such a positive role
model to the girls at AJFC.
Anne Rainey, U11/1A Girls Manager
Under 11/1B Girls
In 2014, the AJFC 11/1B Girls team
fielded thirteen girls. The team
members were: Sachi Farmer, Sophie
Zantides, Tamara Lenthall, Lucinda
Della Marta, Lauren Flint, Ellie Leon-
Searle, Jacinta Macaluso, Emma
Shanahan, Mia Sinclair, Elektra Politis,
Maleeka Prabhakar, Lauren Thomas,
Emmogene Cramp and Coached by
Tyron Farmer & Steve Zantides.
Managed by Sharyn Lenthall.
The energetic ‘Bluebottles’ showed for
the third year running, what an
amazing talent of young girls that are
coming through the ranks of the AJFC.
The formation of play was 3-4-1, and
the training was concentrated on
individual skills, like dribbling, passing &
shooting as well as focusing the players
into their specialized positions, be it
defensive/midfield/striker roles.
From the beginning, the girls’ efforts set
the stage for success and fostered a
positive playing experience. The results
for the year were 8 wins, 7 Losses & 1
draw. Our attacking flair saw us fire in
28 goals for the year, with Sachi
scoring 13 with 2 hat tricks. The central
midfield of Lucinda/Electra/ Lauren
T/Sophie is where most of the battles
were won, with stylish Tiki-Taka
like football being played, whilst our
wing-players of Maleeka/Emmogene/
Emma dazzled the crowd as the
dribbling skills took over and some nice
goals were scored from accurate
crossings into the goal box for the
strikers to enjoy.
From the beginning, the girls’
efforts set the stage for
success and fostered a
positive playing experience.
The fullbacks of Elle/Jacinta/Lauren
F/Tamara showed their courage and
commitment of not only defending,
but also passing out from the back in a
controlled effort, which really set the
standard for the rest of the team.
Special praise has to be mentioned to
our gracious Goalkeeper, Mia, who
unselfishly volunteered to wear the No.
1 jersey and showed us that a star has
been born as a goal-keeper, and her

future in that position could take her
far in Football.
Mia had a fantastic year, making big
saves in big games, and earning the
respect of the team.
Our player of the year, Lucinda, really
matured as an impact player this year,
she was involved in virtually every
attacking effort, scored some goals,
and when injured, showed courage to
resume playing through adversity. An
honour well deserved and a long time
coming for her.
Just pipped at the post for runner up, is
the player that is feared most by the
other teams, Maleeka. She scored
some amazing goals and showed that
she is the best dribbler in the
competition, and with more
confidence, will be a future star.
The player who improved the greatest
this year was Electra. Although all the
players improved somewhat, the
coaching staff felt that Electra’s
confidence this year grew immensely
on the ball, she showed unbelievable
ball control skills and tricks learned at
training to confuse and deflect
defenders during matches, the crowd
was in awe. Special mention to
Jacinta, who also showed great
improvement, her effort at training was
first class, and with confidence in the
future, could become a fine footballer
as well.
The parents have bonded
well…showing that there is
nothing wrong with screaming
applause at the marvellous
efforts of their daughters. It
was great to see.
The parents have bonded well this
year, showing that there is nothing
was great to see.
This is the end of 9v9 half-size field
competition, and it will be full-size field
11v11 for these girls next year, so you
better start your fitness training early!
Thanks to the parents for your support,
and to our energetic Manager, Sharyn
who is now an AJFC player, thanks for
everything.
Coaches, U11/1B Girls
Under 11/2s
The boys played some challenging
games this year that required mental
and physical commitment. Over the
season they developed a greater
sense of the team play by improving
their positional play and passing. This
supplemented their already strong
individual skills. We were fortunate to
AJFC 37

have a great set of forwards and a
very hardworking midfield all
supported by a formidable defence.
Thanks to Fabian for going goalie.
Anthony Di Mento, U11/2s Manager
Under 11/5s
Under the astute guidance of Coach
Adrian Malone, the Abbotsford 11/5s,
many of whom have played together
for several years have developed into
a formidable team during the season
2014.
Following a shaky start with a first round
loss to Leichhardt, the Abbotsford 11/5s
have gone from strength to strength,
remaining undefeated since that date
and beating Leichhardt easily in the
second round.
It is obvious that the boys enjoy playing
together with nearly all players turning
up for training every week, the end
result being an increased skill level right
through the team. I look forward to
seeing this team go onto a bigger and
better 2015 season.
Calvin Goalkeeper / Midfield: For his
first year Calvin took to it like a duck to
water. His goalkeeping was at times
outstanding and when he came out
and played on the field he was able to
find the goals, Calvin had a solid
season.
Tim Right Back: Was our right back and
with each game you could see Tim
improve. By the end of the season Tim
was pretty solid in defence and his
long ball passes setup many attacking
move.
Hugo Central Defence: Hugo made
this his position. A strong tackler and he
could read the game and was able to
cut many attacking moves down. Also
would help his backs and make then
one of the best defences in the
competition.
Leonardo Left Back / Forward: Started
the season as one of our forwards but
was moved back to left back and
what an overlapping back he was,
setting up some nice goals with the
final pass. But when given the chance
to play upfront he scored some nice
goals.
Stephen Right Back: Stephen was
another player who improved as the
season went on developing a strong
kicking game and his defence was
getting stronger. He also made a
AJFC 38

couple of guest appearances in goals.
Federico Goalkeeper / Centre Back /
Forward: Was hard to put down to one
position playing goal keeper, centre
back and forward. He gave his all and
you knew what position you put him in
he would have a solid game, a real
team player.
James P Midfield: With his partner in
crime Eaden they are our V8’s engines
in our midfield James was able to turn
defence into attack and when our
passing game came into play he was
able to setup and score some nice
goal.
Ben Midfield: Ben was another player
who’s improved as the season went on
and the turning point for him was his
goal halfway through the season. That
kick started the forwards to go on and
win the game. He may not have been
the fastest but when his passes found
his players the chances are we would
score.
Eaden Midfield: The other half of the
V8 engine. Strong both in attack and
defence his passing game also helped
our forwards score goals. He was no
stranger to scoring the goals as well.
Another player who had a strong
season.
Gabe Midfield: One of two specialist
left footers Gabe was another player
who improved as the season went on.
Size didn’t worry Gabe the bigger they
are the more he enjoyed tackling
them and like a number of players his
passing improved during the season.
Angus Forward: One of two of our tall
timbers, Angus started as centre
midfield but found his way up to the
forward line and with partner in crime
James SH. He caused a lot of problems
for the opposition defence, and
scoring some nice goals.
Thomas Forward: Thomas was our quiet
achiever. He had the ability to turn the
defence inside out and still manage to
get the ball away to our forwards to
put the ball into the back of the net.
Like many of his team mates he was
required to play in more than one
position and he held his own wherever
he played.
James SH Forward: The other half of
our scoring machine. Like Angus he
caused the opposition defence
problems. Finding the back of the net
a number of times and scoring 4 goals
in one game .Will need to watch
offside next season once on the bigger
field.
Wayne and Fiona Managers: What
can I say a job well done. It’s not easy
making sure everyone gets to training
and the game on time plus all the
AJFC 39

other things that needed to be done.
As Jack Gibson (Rugby League Super
Coach) would say. If the front office
was in order the football department
would run it, and that’s how I felt with
Wayne and Fiona managing our team.
Our first game was our first
and only loss for the season
but I saw enough of that
Abbotsford spirit to tell me that
they could turn this around
and go on to bigger things.
Adrian Coach: After many years away
from the club I decided to get
involved again as coach of my son’s
team. I remember the first training
night and walking away afterwards
thinking to myself what have I got
myself into here.
that Abbotsford spirit to tell me that
they could turns this around and go on
to bigger things.
I’m sure all parents would agree this
team improved week after week and
by the end, showed that they were a
cut above the other teams in our
division. So next year be prepared to
go up a division or two. Thanks to the
parents and the players for making this
an enjoyable season for me. Have a
great summer and remember you are
a really good team and if you are
willing to learn you will go on to bigger
things.
Wayne Jones, U11/5s Manager
Under 12/3s
It’s been a season of new for the U-12
Wolves. After an undefeated season
last year, the team saw some players
go – and almost a third of the players
new to the team. Working as a team
the new challenge for these handcharging
boys.
Ruthless Lucas Mangos was newly
back with his ‘home’ team after a year
away on school football duty. Several
boys were not only new but playing up
a year – and proving themselves more
than worthy – including cracker Jack
Georgiadis, ace Alessio Lyras, jiving
Jordan Tornatore and hot-foot Hugh
Garraway. Jonathan Pan was new to
the game altogether and, like the
team itself, he grew in skills and
confidence over the weeks.
Our first game was our first and only
loss for the season but I saw enough of
The longtime Wolves were a joy to
watch develop in their new
AJFC 41

circumstances, and the new big, long
field. Savvy Valerio Mance continued
to impress so much as goalie that it
was wrenching to take him into the
field – but then of course there, too, his
strength and skills shined. Fast-talking
Eliyar Kaysar integrated into the team,
and into some goal-keeping, in his
post-rookie year, while James
Seccombe also sometimes came off
his duties as Energizer Bunny of the
midfield and sweep, to man the goals.
The players mixed it up in new positions
this year, diversifying their play,
forward, back or mid. Handy Hugo
Lack shimmied from striker to sweeper
and back, scoring from all over the
field (and his corner kicks had them
saying “Bend it like Lack”). The speedy
Sebastian Gilchrist and on-the-ball
Oscar Bouwman proved likewise gifted
at playing all around the field, as did
jockeying Joshua Johansson.
Josh often held the line in defence,
where deft Declan Mogan and
outstanding Olivier Grzeskowiak
booted back many onto attack.
These Wolves trained hard – under the
supreme staff of Coach David Mance,
Assistant Coach John Mangos, Trainer
Mark Garraway and Manager Julie
Mogan. The boys deserved some more
breaks to go their way, and a few
more wins than they notched up, but
they played well, they showed
themselves to be good sportsmen and,
who knows what seeds have been
plated for new possibilities in
the new year.
David Mance, U12/3s Coach
Under 18/1s
The team overcame a number of
obstacles to deliver a pleasing result in
the league ladder, a clear second
place with one game remaining.
This result was achieved despite the
facts that a key player received a
season ending injury early in the
season, very few of the players had
played together previously, on two
occasions, the team was soundly
thrashed by at least five goals, and
injuries and absences meant that the
team had to borrow players or play
with less than eleven on the field.
The positive out of all of this was that
players learned to play in more than
one position at various times.
Thanks to Sam for his coaching.
Under 21/1s
We faced a hard challenge in the
2014 season after being placed in the
top division and knew it was not going
to be easy. Despite the challenge, we
gave it our all every game and faced
every challenge that had confronted
with confidence and determination.
Our highlight of the season was our
hard fought victory against a strong
Canterbury team. The game saw the
return of Leandros Pandoulis after a
long stint on the sidelines with an ACL
injury. He played an instrumental role in
the midfield. Mathew Tanti was on the
score sheet early as his well weighted
cross flew over Canterbury's keeper
and into the top right hand corner. 1-0
Abbotsford. The game grew on and as
time was coming to a halt Leandros
played a gorgeous through ball
through to Abbotsfords 21 A's joint top
goal scorer
Eduardo Santo who faked, not once,
but twice and placed the ball with
ease past Canterbury's keeper.
Canterbury then scored one back in
quick succession but the boys held on
and won a hard fought victory 2-1.
I would like to congratulate all the
boys in the team , who despite having
a tough season, gave it their all every
match and the challenge has only
made us stronger and more willing to
come back and prove our worth next
year.
Nickolas Loizos , U21/1s Coach
Under 21/2As
We had an excellent start to the
season in a competitive 2 nd division
and finished the first round very
strongly as 2 nd on the table. Quite an
achievement considering most of the
players had signed up for their first
season in the U21 age group.
We couldn’t quite keep it up in the
second round though with injuries and
exams at times playing havoc with our
consistency and numbers on the field.
In the end we found ourselves in
familiar territory: we had to win the last
game to make it to the semi-finals…It
just wasn’t meant to be our day and
an out numbered but strong Enfield
side held on to the draw.
A fine season overall though by a
great team of players who were, as
always, a pleasure to guide from the
sidelines. Looking forward to seeing
you all back next year!
Under 21/2Bs
So what seemed like a rather simple
and straight forward task, turned into a
mammoth of an obstacle to
eventually tackle, approaching many
small problems and challenges along
the way.
The word manager is defined by the
Oxford Dictionary as “A person
responsible for controlling or
administering an organization or group
of staff”, and to this idea I had
decided to be the front man of this
team. However little did I know what
was to come.
The team consisted of a small bunch of
my close friends and to say we hadn’t
grown closer was a lie. Despite the one
win, two draws and the rest as losses
record, they held themselves high and
gave it all for the 90, or less depending
on whether or not the ref would
actually start let alone turn up on time.
It was difficult to pull together a
consistent form of wins as many teams
had been playing for countless years
together and had perfected a
streamline game around each other’s
strengths and weaknesses.
On top of worrying about who was to
start within the team, there was also
the team sheet, paying the ref and
making sure the actual cards were in
my bag, of which on two occasions I
forgot them on my desk.
Training also proved a challenge, as
many were enslaved by the restricting
hours of work, university and various
other events, and as a result this had
also affected our game to some
degree as a consistent form of training
for all was not possible to be withheld
throughout the year.
Nonetheless they really did surprise me
and come together in the moments
when it all seemed too dim to see any
chance of hope, the boys pushed
hard every game and were rewarded
for a win against Enfield, a victory that
still sits in my mind as one of the best
feelings in football.
Managing isn’t just about the black
and white I learnt, and especially from
our later assistant Joe who was
monumental in helping me out and I
thank him greatly, it was about going
the extra yard and pulling together the
team, encouraging others to strive for
the same ideal, focus on a goal and
work towards that as a unit whilst
individually giving insight into how
others could better their game for the
following Sunday, and most
importantly have as much fun as
possible.
To say that I held the same ideal about
managing as I did previously would be
a joke because the truth is very far
from that. The year, although riddled
with faults, was a fun and exciting

experience that I can safely say was a
privilege and an honour to be a part
of. The managerial role has opened
my eyes as to how special these boys
were and I would like to personally
thank each and every one of them for
participating this year and I look
forward to playing with them in the
future.
Over 30 Women’s A
2014 was another BIG year for
Womens’ football at AJFC and CDSFA.
Within the O30’s Womens’
competition, the ranks had swelled
and this year it was a 10 team
competition. Two Over 30 teams
stepped up this year from AJFC. Most
of last year’s inaugurals and a whole
bunch of newbies combined to form
the O30W A’s.
Giovanni “Pappa G” Magnone
stepped up as the Coach and took
the ladies to a new level - “you have
to play beautiful football” he would
say.
Last year’s introduction to football from
Barry “Bazza” Agnew had made sense
and we were now beginning to
appreciate most of the rules and
tactics in our second season. We also
had the benefit of the coaching
wisdom of Jason Falzon at times, who
brought out the “Messi” in all of us!
With the off season filled with Summer
Soccer and back yard training sessions
from husbands, boyfriends, kids and
friends… foot skills improved and the
hunger for full field football grew.
The season kicked off in early April
against Russell Lea and a close and
competitive game ended in a 2-2
draw, with Russell Lea equalising in the
last 5 mins of the game. The second
game was against Leichhardt Saints
B’s, and another close game ended
with a 2-1 loss. Then came the barrage
of Hurlstone Park Teams and we can’t
remember if round 3 was against Team
A, B, C or D! Anyway….
2014 saw the A’s finish with 16 points on
the table as a result of 4 wins, 4 draws
and 10 losses.
The turnaround from last year
was AMAZING. We had gone
from a bunch of Football
Mums to a side to be feared.
A thumping 26 goals were drilled into
the opposition net. The majority of the
games were a 1 or 2 goal difference.
Our fancy forwards and strikers Jules,
Sabrina, Mel, Nadia & Liz showed some
great footwork at front. Our fabulous
midfielders- Sandra C, Ali, Lea, Yvonne,
Sharon, Janelle, Michelle & Veronica
showed the other teams how football
is played.
Our awesome backs were a force to
be reckoned with – Sandra F, Anita,
Gina, Anna, Maria, Bernie, and Ang.
Our goalie Marvi busted a number of
beautiful saves, not to mention some
fancy moves of her own. 18 full on 90
minute rounds of Football . Yes we
sustained a few injuries through the
season – but they were “war wounds”
and not body break downs. Many of
these ladies still played on. In
fact…nothing could get them off or
away from the field.
When the A League Grand Final was
on – it was the A’s who were up at the
Birkenhead Hotel cheering, yelling and
Over 30 Women’s B
Awwwwooooo what an amazing
season we have had!
A fantastic bunch of ladies mostly that
had never played football before, got
together to learn new skills, keep fit
and have fun whilst learning how to
play football "the beautiful game".
Great friendships have been
formed and we have
celebrated all our
achievements this year like
we have won a grand final!
What was apparent after the first
training session was that these women
were competitive and even after the
first game showed lots of heart as a
team and individually.
It was a slow start to the season but
eventually the training paid off and we
AJFC 47

scored our first goal. We then were
able to snatch a draw - our first
competition point was won. Then we
readjusted our goals and worked
towards the first win. After a couple of
false starts leading 2 - 0 at half time
only to be beaten, we finally did it a
win 2 – 0! We finished the season strong
with another draw and a team that
plays so well together.
Most pleasing this season was the way
the girls played and the ability to listen
and learn the sport so quickly.
Our team had a great time on and off
the pitch. Great friendships have been
formed and we have celebrated all
our achievements this year like we
have won a grand final!
We have a solid foundation for next
year with summer soccer to refine our
skills. The Wolves and their dedicated
supporters will be back and we can’t
wait.
Richard Lucas, O30 Women’s B Coach
Over 35/3s
It is difficult to believe we missed the
semi-finals this year. We started the
season so well and were in the top 3
for most of the season.
Our football at times was brilliant with
our new acquisitions this year such as
Scott, Helder, JLR and George adding
a touch of class to the team. But in the
end a combination of niggling injuries,
holidays and a bit of bad luck
conspired against us.
We dropped a number of points in the
last 5 – 10 minutes of games and
unfortunately didn’t take our chances
in games where we were the better
team. Despite that, it was another
great season with a great bunch of
blokes. A special thanks to Daniel for
taking the reins as coach.
Over 45/2s
This was the Gypsies’ and AJFC’s first
season playing in the O45 Competition
and we found it overall to be less
aggressive and played at a slower
pace compared to those
young whipper snappers in the Over
35s competition.
Our squad comprised of players, on
average, in their early 50’s and couple
of old timers.
Our season this year was challenging
to say the least. We would start most
games with a couple of reserves from
an 18 man squad and were lucky to
finish the game with 11 on the field!
Even though we didn’t experience
much joy in the way of wins we still had
fun and it was an enjoyable season
with the highlight of match day being
the post-game celebrations over a
beverage, discussing our moments of
brilliance.
Under 9/1s
It was great to see the development of
the under 9/1s team over the course of
this season.
We were the youngest team in the
competition and were always up
against it physically against much
bigger boys. But our boys more than
held their own, winning most of their
games this season and being amongst
the top few teams in the competition.
The goalkeeping epin
role
was
shared by
Nicholas, James, JJ and Alex N. Not
only were
they great with
the
gloves
but their ability ity to read the game
improved throughout o t the year.
Damon, Andrea, JJ and Alex N were
often relied upon in defence, proving
very difficult to get through, while in
midfield and up front, Marcus, James,
Alexander A, Gus, Jacob K and
Nicholas were a constant threat at
goal.
…We were the youngest team
in the competition…
AJFC 49

The boys played some very good
football at times, with some great
passing and ball skills on display. The
most pleasing aspect of the season
though was that all the boys played
their part, with a real sense of “team”
developed by our coaches Roger and
Brent. The boys attacked as a team
and defended as a team, and
gave us many memorable moments
throughout the season.
