NDC WELCOMES DECISION
TO RENAME NATIONAL
STADIUM IN HONOUR OF
KIRANI KENO JAMES, OUR
OLYMPIC GOLD AND
SILVER MEDALIST
The Party celebrates this news with the entire nation,
even as we acknowledge government's acquiescence
to the will of the people in bestowing this long
promised honour.
Grenadians will recall that in 2012, after Kirani’s
winning of the country's first ever Gold Medal at the
London Olympics, then Prime Minister Honourable
Tillman Thomas announced to the nation and the
world, that the soon to be constructed Athletic and
Football Stadium would be named after James as
part of his honour package.
The National Democratic Congress has led the call
for this promise to be fulfilled by the Keith Mitchell
Administration, and felt the deep disappointment of
the nation when this was not done at the Stadium's
opening last year.
The party once again welcomes this news and looks
forward to the national, bi-partisan celebration of
this long overdue honour.
NDC’s Burke calls for harsher
punishment for rape and murder
Leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress
(NDC), Senator Nazim Burke, said, "The NDC
leadership is very confused about the punishment for
rape in Grenada, and we can’t be the only ones left
confused by the current trends in rape in sentencing.”
According to Burke, who plans to raise the issue in
parliament, the government has remained silent when
sentences for rape crimes are so disproportionately
weak.
“Our court system must punish severe crimes like rape and
murder more harshly than minor infractions such as theft.
Judges must use discretion when imposing jail terms that meet
the requirement of justice especially in case of rape,” he said.

Caretakers #1
Patrick Simmons
Mr Patrick Simmons, representing the National
Democratic Congress, is the constituency caretaker for
St Andrew South East. Married, Simmons is father of
five children.
He received secondary education at St Andrew's
Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) prior to attending
Cheyney University of PA and the University of West
Indies.
An educator who believes that everyone has a right to
education appropriate to his/her interest and ability
Patrick Simmons was Principal of SAASS and a
Lecturer at TA Marryshow Community College.
Simmons is a former National Athlete and Coach; he
served as a Member of Parliament between 2008 and
2013;
and was Minister of Youth Development and Sports.

our Athletes at the 2016
Olympics in Rio
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) joins
with all of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite
Martinique in extending heartiest congratulations to
our hometown hero Kirani Zeno James, on his
silver medal performance at the Rio Olympics 2016.
The gentle courage, humility and grace with which
this young champion has borne, and time and again
exceeded the expectations of the people of our
nation cannot be overstated and underappreciated.

Our party also salutes our "King Kirani" for being
both an inspiration and role model for the youth of
our nation.

In closing we, like the rest of the country look on
with pride at the athletic brothers Kurt Felix and
Lindon Victor as they begin their quest for medals.

could, they now believe they can! He has become
the standard against which all other young athletes
measure themselves, not only in our country, but
across the Caribbean and indeed the world," Party
Leader Nazim Burke said.

congratulations to Bralon Taplin for his outstanding
campaign at the games and the coaches, the
Olympic Committee and all other athletes who
represented Grenada. We note that their journey to
the games has been nothing short of amazing, as
they all represented us and worked with distinction.
