WELCOME!
Hello everyone and welcome to the Recreation and Leisure
Department’s monthly newsletter! We are very excited to
create this newsletter as a way to provide information and
entertainment about the department. If you are a student
look for information about department events, volunteer
and job opportunities, club-related events and/or fun and
insightful information about your fellow student or professor
then you are in the right place! This year will bring
countless opportunities to get involved with the department
so we encourage you to read this newsletter! Finally if
you wish to include information about a club, event, or anything
relating to recreation please feel free to contact us!

On a cool September
night over
30,000 students
came together for
the popular campus
event: Smorgasbort!
The
event was a fun
filled night with food trucks, carnival rides, artists, and various
campus organizations. Our own Recreation Society represented
the department and facilitated events such as Spike
Ball and Bean Bag Toss!

Foundation Events Assistant
The In-and-Out Foundation has an amazing opportunity
for a paid part-time opportunity as the Foundation Event
Assistant in the Irvine Office.

Part-time Youth Sports Coach
The Youth Sports Program at Somerset Park is looking for
interested and knowledgeable college student to coach kids

GETTING TO KNOW ME
THE DEPARTMENT WELCOMES A NEW FACE
Hello everyone,
I wanted to introduce myself;
my name is Alaysia
and I am a student assistant
in the Recreation Department.
Currently, I am
in my third year as a Communications
major and
Event Planning and Management
minor. I look
forward to this newsletter
because it is great way to
connect with you all in the
department! Aside from
school and work I love to
hang out with friends and
family and eat great food.

Let’s give a warm welcome
to Dr. Heewon Yang
as he joins the Recreation
Department as a full- time
tenured Professor and Interim
Chair. Before coming
to CSULB Heewon worked
at Southern Illinois University
Carbondale as professor
for 12 years. Along with
being a full-time professor
he served as the Department
chair for the Department
of Health Education
and Recreation. Heewon
received his bachelor’s degree
in Forest Resources
at Korea University and
went on to obtain his Masters
in Leisure, Tourism,
and Hospitality (with an
emphasis in Therapeutic
Recreation) from the University
of Tennessee,
Knoxville. Heewon did not
stop there because he
then got his Doctorate in
Leisure Behavior (with a
major in Therapeutic Recreation)
from Indiana University.
Along with a successful
career Heewon has a lovely
wife (Yunduk) and three
children (Daniel, Joyce,
and Nathan). In his leisure
time Heewon enjoys swimming,
playing tennis, jogging,
and tasting new
foods. Lastly, Heewon will
be more than happy to
take time to meet and talk
with students during lunch
or take a stroll around
campus. If you wish to set
