Why do awards and recognition matter? For our members they can help establish a career, reinforce a request for a better job or higher salary, and provide external validation of the member’s work. WWBA members can be uncomfortable about receiving public recognition, not seeing themselves as strong enough candidates, even when their colleagues can clearly see their hard work, commitment and effort. Study after study shows that when women are performing roughly the same as men, men receive more validation and recognition. Women’s perceived readiness for awards is arbitrary and more importantly, can change in a positive direction. “It’s really interesting to call a member and let her know that her name has been suggested for an award or recognition,” says Susan Edwards Colson, WWBA President. “Her first response is often ’who me?’ And, often, she will begin to question whether she meets the award criteria.” But part of the WWBA’s mission is to encourage women both as lawyers and professionals. Simply going through the awards process can permanently raise confidence. By allowing the recognition, women often learn an important skill: how to identify and speak about their value and reflect upon the important contributions they make to the legal profession. The WWBA Awards Committee works diligently to gain recognition for the WWBA and our members by nominating them for these annual awards. Awards Committee co-chairs, Kim Berg and Elizabeth Barnhard, recently submitted nomination applications to WBASNY to nominate five WWBA members for the following awards: American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Second Circuit; The Kay Crawford Murray Award (NYSBA); The Haywood Burns Memorial Award (NYSBA); Root/ Stimson Award (NYSBA) and Ruth G. Schapiro Memorial Award (NYSBA). Last year’s recipients of non-WWBA awards included Dolores Gebhardt and Tanya Breindel. Dolores Gebhardt was honored with A Leader in Serving the Legal Services Community. That’s Sterling. Expect the highest caliber of personal service and banking expertise.
