DON’T JUST SHOP,
ADOPT
AT ACPS
BY COURTNEY CLARK
jack
Riverside’s Animal Care and Protective Services has been living up to
its name since its opening in Riverside in 2009.
Operating since March under Division Management Consultant
Jim (The Chief) Crosby, ACPS takes in dogs and cats that have been
abandoned, rescued or left to wander the streets and alleys of the Cultural Core
as strays. Its dedicated staff and volunteers provide animals with all of their
veterinary and behavioral needs.
And thanks to Friends of Jacksonville Animals, ACPS is
even able to offer critical surgeries to animals in need —
such as dogs that have been hit by cars or those suffering
from heartworms.
Although ACPS gives a lot of time and care, the
facility wouldn’t be able to function without help from the
community.
“The biggest challenge here is trying to change human behavior
and to teach people to be responsible,” Crosby says.
Here are a few things you can do to help the shelter and the pets in our area.
1Spay and Neuter
“Number one [is to]
spay and neuter your
animal,” Crosby advises.
According to the American
Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals’ website,
doing so not only has medical
benefits – such as lowering the
risk of cancer and infections –
but behavioral ones as well. Pets
may be better behaved and less
likely to run away from home.
Additionally, if your dog does
get out, there is no risk of future
stray pups if Roscoe is feeling
raunchy.
2Food, Water
and Shelter
“Animals are not
disposable,” Crosby says.
Sometimes it’s not a case of
intended cruelty, either.
The Chief explains that
some pet owners don’t
realize how hot it can
be outside for a dog
left in a backyard.
Fortunately, there are
educational resources
at ACPS to ensure that
pets are taken care of properly.
THE CHRONICLES
OF YOSHI
BY SAMANTHA ARORA
jack
As the person who compiles the event listings for Jack, I get to explore our Cultural
Core’s eight beautiful neighborhoods and love to bring along my favorite four-legged
companion, Yoshi. Excited about the opportunity to contribute a fresh story for this issue,
we decided to make a guide for you. Yoshi helped me sniff out some of the best pet-friendly
spots around, so I’ll let him be your tour guide.
What’s up fur friends?
I may still be a new pup on the block, but Samantha and I love to explore all our city has
to offer. Let’s check out some of the places that really get my tail wagging.
Avondale
I really enjoy The Brick in
Avondale because there’s so much
to see and smell. After a delicious
weekend brunch,
Samantha and I
walk through
Avondale and
window shop,
and I adore
being on the
receiving end of a
few belly rubs along
the way. On one of our walks, we
met Roman, a 4 year old Shih Tzu,
eating at The Brick with Denise
Lamkin. She lives in the area and
loves to take Roman to restaurants
all over Avondale. Roman tells me
The Brick is one of their favorite
places because of the spacious
outdoor seating.
On a recent Saturday, Samantha
brought me to the grand opening of
the John Gorrie Dog Park, and boy
was I excited.
I frolicked in the small-dog area
of the free 2-acre park and
definitely left my mark,
if you know what I
mean. I made a new
friend, Ren, who
is part Pomeranian
and part Sheltie.
Ren’s owner,
Laura Evans, said, “We
live in Ortega and we heard
about the park opening today so we
thought we would check it out.”
Riverside
I like to make fur friends
everywhere, but especially in the
heart of Riverside.
Car rides to Einstein’s Bagels
are my favorite because I give
Samantha that special look and she
always buys me a
famous doggie
bagel.
While
chowing
down the
other day, I
bumped into
Olive, a recently
rescued black-and-white Pointer
mix.
Ally Miller and Avery Moore
had brought Olive to Animal
Care and Protective Services for
a veterinarian checkup (oy) and
then to Einstein’s for a special
treat.
On the hunt for the next best
treat, we stopped by Hyppo
Gourmet Ice Pops.
Hyppo offers peanut butter
and other delicious dog-friendly
popsicles.
I just love coming here,
especially on hot days, because I
can cool off with a sweet treat.
These whisker-licking-good
“pupsicles” deserve four out of five
paws.
Downtown
On days that Samantha takes
me to Bark Downtown, I’m certain
to run into other furry, four-legged
friends.
But during a recent trip, I met
a stranger, literally, a 3-year-old
Corgi/Chihuahua mix named
Stranger. He and Mike Pourciau
were headed into this urban pet
boutique.
Pourciau says he likes to bring
Stranger to Bark because it’s a
unique, high-end dog
boutique and retail
shop. “I don’t
like the big
box stores,”
Pourciau
said. “This is
completely outof-the-box,
and I
absolutely love it here.”
San Marco
Okay, I may not be pampered,
but I can dig an upscale place.
That’s why I love the outdoor
seating at Taverna, the Italianinspired
restaurant in historic San
Marco Square.
When I know I’ll be relaxing
under Taverna’s tables, I make sure
to dress up in my tie to impress the
ladies.
with you.
INSTAGRAM STAR LEADS A RUFF LIFE
BY COURTNEY CLARK
jack
Bocephus the Lab is a local Instagram star with more than 3,000
followers. The 10-month old pup is from Dunnellon and was brought
to Riverside by Austin Ellis and Alexa Hughes in February.
The purebred English Labrador loves Bark on Park, lounging
around and lizards.
Bo took a break from Insta-fame to answer a few of our questions.
Courtney Clark: When did
you decide to start an Instagram
account?
Bocephus: Oh, I didn’t really
have a choice. Dad started that
before I even came home.
C: Has Insta-stardom changed
you?
B: I would like to think it hasn’t
changed me very much. I mean,
I’m much better at standing still
while Dad shoves a camera in my
face than I used to be.
C: What do you do in your spare
time?
B: Hmmmm. There are so many
things ... . I play with sticks, I
dig under the house, I get on the
couch, I play fetch with Dad, I
play with sticks, I squeak toys in
Mom’s ear, I catch all the lizards
in Willowbranch Park and I swim
in anything from my water bowl
to the ocean. Did I mention, I also
play with sticks?
C: What dog do you admire
most?
B: Well, I love my old roommate
Bodhie so much. She’s a 7-yearold
Weimaraner and she’s really
glad we don’t live together
anymore. On Instagram, I stalk
@aspenthemountainpup. He’s
cool.
C: Do you see puppies in your
future?
B: No, Dad said I became an
Unsullied.
C: What do you do when your
parents aren’t home?
B: On the rare occasion I
am left at home alone, I really
like to lie on the couch. I’m not
supposed to but Mom does it all
the time so why can’t I?
C: If you were to become
President, what’s the first thing
you’d do?
B: I would build a wall around
Bark so the parents couldn’t come
in and take my best friends home.
We would make playtime great
again by making it never end.
RIVERSIDE
RUFFIANS
ROMP IN NEW
DOG PARK
BY COURTNEY CLARK
jack
As of September 17, Riverside
dogs have a place to play, pounce,
and ponder nature at the John
Gorrie Dog Park.
Located at the northwest corner
of Riverside Park, the area is two
acres and includes two fencedin
areas: one for little dogs (one
quarter of an acre) and one for big
dogs (one-and-a-quarter acres).
The larger area stretches under a
highway overpass, leaving plenty
of room to roam and run.
There is plenty of shade
provided by palm trees and
as many recycled materials as
possible were used in construction.
The dog park also features plenty
of parallel parking outside of the
gates, a water fountain for pups and
seating options for their owners.
Jack met with a few dogs at
John Gorrie to get their take on the
new addition. In between chasing
each other, sniffing one another’s
rumps, and slobbering on the
humans, the pups took a breather
to tell us how happy the park made
them.
In keeping with the first-pooch
spirit of this issue, we asked what
they love about the park, and their
tails wagged. See their responses
below.
PHOTO: PROVIDED BY HIGHTIDE BURRITO CO. FOR JACK
Jacksonville’s restaurant culture is an ever-evolving affair.
As older spots plateau and fade, new places come on strong,
meaning there’s never a shortage of exciting places to explore.
Here is one our favorite spots.
« HIGHTIDE BURRITO CO.
Tacos for breakfast…SCORE! You must be at HIGHTIDE
BURRITO CO.
They’re loaded with scrambled eggs, Mexican chorizo, avocado
slices, pico de gallo, and jack cheese packed into a flour tortilla.
Not in mood for tacos (are you insane?) then try a Breakfast Burrito,
Breakfast Empanada or the Tamales Sunrise. Sides include Potatoes con
Chorizo and fresh fruit.
You can easily knock out breakfast for under $5.
Authentic Mexican recipes combine with the vibe and flavors of
Florida to create an original menu that offers delicious food.
beast. To accomplish their goal, the scientists
one young executive dares to wonder if it may
be something different … something alive. His
The Wolf Man
(1941) Are they monsters or men? Unclassifiable
creatures, possessing freakish qualities and
abilities inhabit a world of their own, shocking
the humans with whom they come into contact
with their powers & near immortality. Before the
advent of modern comic book movies Universal
Studios took characters from literature, stage, &
screenwriters’ imagination to the silver screen,
creating a series of monster classics. From
the 1920s through the 1950s cinemas across
the United States became home to the likes
of Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Creature from
the Black Lagoon & Frankenstein. Join us for a
Since we don’t know of a band named Dog, the closest we could
come to continuing the pet-friendly theme of this issue is PHISH.
Have you ever wanted to hear one song go on for more than two
hours? Well, Phish just may be your band.
Phish offers musical improvisation, extended jams, a blending of
genres, and it has one of the most dedicated fan bases,
“Rolling Stone” has stated that Phish helped “spawn a new
wave of bands oriented around group improvisation and extended
instrumental grooves.”
And Phish has sold more that 8 million albums and DVDs in the
United States. The band’s 16 studio album, Big Boat, will be available
3Licensing
“Keep your animal
licensed so that we can
help get your pet back
to you if you and the pet get
separated. Licenses help us identify
the animal and if an animal gets
lost we can call you,” Crosby says.
Volunteer
“Donating is nice but
... volunteering time is
something I can’t buy.
Give personal interaction to some
of our animals. That, to me, is a
more valuable donation than any
check or dollar,” Crosby says.
“A dog can’t snuggle up with a
checkbook. A dog can spend 20
minutes a day snuggled up to a
caring person and change that
animal’s whole day.”
Volunteers also can assist in the
behavioral, laundry, clinic, greeting
and cleaning areas – among others.
5
Kindness
“Bottom line is: just
treat your animals kindly,”
Crosby says. “Kindness
goes a long way and that’s
something I think people forget
sometimes. They get so busy and
involved in the day-to-day chaos
going on around them that they
forget to just take a breath and take
some time. Be kind to your pet.
Make sure your pet is part of your
life and part of the family, not just a
Paris Hilton accessory.”
