Degrees &
Certificates
Associate of Arts
The purpose of this degree program is to provide curricula that
enable students to enter as juniors at the four-year institution of
their choice. While the liberal arts curricula will satisfy the
requirements of most senior institutions, it is the students'
responsibility to identify as early as possible the institution to
which they will transfer and to ascertain the specific requirements
of that institution for the freshman and sophomore year. The
student and academic advisor should plan each student’s
curriculum with a specific four-year institution in mind.
In addition to the general Associate of Arts, TCC offers an
Associate of Arts in Kinesiology and 3 Associate of Arts in
Teaching.
Associate of Science
Certificates of
Completion
In addition to the Associate
of Applied Science degree
programs, TCC offers
certificate programs
designed to meet specific
needs of the community.
These programs are normally
one year in length. Upon
completion of the prescribed
courses, the student receives
a Certificate of Completion.
A list of program offerings is
available online along with
our certificate plans.
The purpose of this degree program is to provide curricula in
university parallel and pre-professional areas to enable students to
enter as juniors at a senior college/university of their choice with a
major in a science discipline. While this suggested course satisfies
the requirements of most senior institutions, it is the student's
responsibility to identify his or her transfer institution to determine
specific requirements for the freshman and sophomore years.
In addition to the general Associate of Science, TCC offers
Associate of Science degrees in Engineering, Chemistry and
Mathematics.
Associate of Applied Science
The Associate of Applied Science degree program offers many
unique curricula designed to enable the graduate to enter an
occupation with a marketable skill, an acceptable level of
competency, and the ability to communicate intelligently. The
curricula provide highly specialized courses to develop technical
skill and general education courses to enable students to be
effective members of society.
plans.
BALANCING
Work & School
Suggestions
• If you work full time: Take only one or two classes per semester
• If you work 30 hours: Take three classes per semester
• If you work 20 hours: Take four or five classes per semester
10
Remember: Attending class is just the beginning!
As a general rule, the number of study hours (or prep time) required
for each course is an average of at least three hours for each hour
spent in the classroom or lab. Therefore, a full-time course load of
12 hours = 36 hours/week devoted to college.
Note: Full-time student status equals 12 hours or four 3-hour
classes to meet full funding requirements for financial aid, VA, etc.
Select a Variety of Courses
• Academic advisors/counselors will print a degree audit plan for you
listing core curriculum classes and some recommended electives.
• Some courses are reading intensive, others are writing intensive,
and some have labs. Mix up your courses so you are not
overwhelmed.
• Begin and complete your math courses as early as possible in your
college career.
Scheduling Options
• BL1 - Blended (On-campus & off-campus instruction via computer
access).
• CAI – Computer Assisted Instruction
• ITV - Instructional Television
• LEC – Lecture
• LAB – Laboratory
• WEB- Internet/Computer Delivered
• On-campus - day, evening
• Weekend College - Saturdays and Sundays
• Minimesters (two weeks)
• Eight-Week
• Summer Sessions (six weeks)
Use the New Class Planner in WebAdvisor for schedule planning
ACADEMIC STANDING
TCCD.EDU
GPA
GPA refers to your Grade
Point Average. GPA is
determined by dividing the
total number of grade points by
the total number of semester
hours attempted. *Grades of
CR, NC, W, I, AU, or grades
earned for work in
developmental courses do not
affect the grade point average.
Protect Your GPA
• Reduce your course load to allow adequate
time to prepare for papers and exams.
• Remember the drop date of each semester. If
your grade is undesirable, talk to an academic
advisor or instructor about dropping the class.
• Retaking classes with an earned grade of “D”
or “F” can raise your GPA. Check with financial
aid if necessary.
• Claim Academic Fresh Start if applicable.
Grades that are more than 10 years old can be
ignored for GPA purposes; see the Registrar’s
office for more details.
Academic Good Standing:
• Students are considered to be in good
standing when they maintain a cumulative GPA
of 2.0 or higher.
Academic Probation:
• Students who fail to maintain a cumulative
GPA of 2.0 or higher are placed on academic
probation.
• Students on academic probation may continue
to enroll unless/until they earn less than a 2.0
semester GPA.
• The first time a student on academic probation
makes less than a 2.0 in any semester, he/she
is placed on academic suspension.
Academic Suspension:
• Students placed on academic suspension may
not enroll for the next long semester including
summer sessions (for example: two summer
sessions and the fall semester if suspended
following the spring semester).
• After serving his/her suspension, a student is
eligible to re-enroll and should contact the
Counseling Center to request removal of the
registration “hold.”
Students on academic suspension because of
unusual circumstances may contact the
Counseling Center and complete an “Academic
Recovery Plan” which, if approved, would allow
them to enroll with specified restrictions.
If a student is granted re-enrollment, he/she
must maintain 2.0 or higher.
Academic Dismissal:
A student suspended for the third time is placed
on academic dismissal and may not enroll
again for 12 months, and then only if his/her reactivation
is reviewed and approved by a
representative of the campus Vice President for
TCC POLICIES
2015-2016
12
Mandatory Attendance Policy
Regular and punctual class attendance is
expected at Tarrant County College. Student
absences will be recorded from the first day the
class meets. In case of absence, it is the
student's responsibility to contact the instructor.
Students absent on official school business are
entitled to make up coursework missed. In all
other cases, the instructor will judge whether
the student will be permitted to make up work
and will decide on the time and nature of the
makeup. However, the student is expressly
responsible for any work missed regardless of
the cause of the absence. The student must
discuss such work with the instructor and
should do so immediately on returning to
school.
Communication between the student and
instructor is most important, and it is the
student's responsibility to initiate such
communication. If students do not appear at the
prearranged time or meet the prescribed
deadline for makeup work, they forfeit their
rights for further makeup of that work. Students
who stop attending class for any reason should
contact the instructor and the Registrar's office
to officially withdraw from the class. Failure to
officially withdraw may result in a failing grade
for the course.
Class attendance and participation are essential
to student success. Effective with the Spring
2012 term, the following attendance guidelines
will apply:
• A student in an on-campus course missing a
cumulative of 15 percent of the class
meetings and not keeping up with the course
assignments may be dropped at the
discretion of the instructor.
• A student in an online course is required to
successfully complete the online course
orientation and actively participate in the
course as described in the Instructor's Course
Requirements. A student not meeting these
requirements may be dropped at the
discretion of the instructor.
Drop Six Rule
First time students of Fall 2007 or later may not
drop more than six courses, including those
taken at another college or university according
to the Texas Education Code, Section 51.907.
All courses dropped after the official day of
record (census date) are included in the sixcourse
limit unless:
W
• The student
withdraws from all
courses.
• A drop exception
is authorized.
The official day of
record for an
undergraduate regular term course is the 12th
class day (census date). Check the calendar for
all census dates, including other than regular
terms.
The Vice President for Student Development
Services can approve drop exceptions if the
student documents one of the following:
• The student, a member of the student's family,
or a person of equally important relationship to
the student experiences a serious illness or
other debilitating condition.
• The student becomes responsible for the care
of a sick, injured, or needy person.
• There is a death in the student's family or of a
non-family member of equally important
relationship.
• The student or a member of the student's
family, or a person of equally important
relationship to the student, is called to active
duty service as a member of the Texas
National Guard or the armed forces of the
United States.
• There is a change of the student's work
schedule that is beyond the student's control.
• The College determines that there is other
good cause for the student to drop the course.
Students who drop six or more courses without
an approved drop exception will incur
registration and drop restrictions during all
subsequent semesters and may incur other
enrollment limitations or requirements.

FINANCIAL AID 2015-2016
In order for TCC to determine students’ eligibility for financial aid,
students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA).
Eligibility Requirements
To receive federal student aid, the following requirements must be
met:
or credit certificate program.
• Maintain the Financial Aid Standards of Academic Progress
(SAP).
• Be either a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen.
• Register with Selective Service. (Males between ages of 18-
family contribution, which is calculated from the FAFSA. Applying
for grants early is always best, but not mandatory.
Loans: Federal student loans for college are an investment in
students’ future. Students must repay their loans, so be sure you
understand your options and responsibilities.
Scholarships: Scholarships are gifts. They don’t need to be repaid.
There are thousands of them, offered by schools, employers,
individuals, nonprofits, communities and social organizations.
Work-Study: Provides jobs if you're eligible for financial need,
allowing you to earn money to help pay education expenses. The
program encourages community service work and work related to
your course of study.
Distance Learning 2015-2016
Online Readiness
If you have never taken an online course at TCC or if you have
taken an online course but did not receive a grade of C or better,
you must take Online Readiness before you can register for an
online course.
About Online Readiness
The assessment takes about 35 minutes to complete, but you may
log out and finish it later if necessary.
The topics include the following:
• Reading Rate and Recall (minimum score of 60% required)
• Technical Competency (minimum score of 80% required)
• Technical Knowledge (minimum score of 60% required)
• Typing Speed and Accuracy (minimum score of 20 WPM
required)
Your Scores
If your scores are high enough, you will be able to add an
eLearning course to your preferred section list within 24 hours.
If you need to retake Online Readiness, you will be able to do so
24 hours after you completed it the first time.
eLearning
eLearning extends the reach of TCC beyond the traditional classroom and directly into our community.
eLearning administers the myTCC portal and manages all distance education courses offered through
the Internet.
eLearning currently offers over 250 college credit courses and a variety of continuing education classes.
You can learn in real time, and the distance format makes it easier to fit pursuing higher education in
with other responsibilities.
eLearning courses are currently offered through:
• Our online portal, myTCC
• The Virtual College of Texas (VCT)
• Students must take the Online Readiness Assessment before adding Online/ITV classes to their
preferred registration list.
• Instructional television classes require students to watch cable television lectures, purchase
DVDs from the bookstore, or use Video-on-Demand.
• To succeed at Distance Learning, students must be self-motivated and self-disciplined. Some
visits to campus may be required for orientations, seminars and testing. It is the student’s
responsibility to log on when classes begin.
• Distance Learning Academic Advising is now available through live chats or email.
• Distance Learning courses are listed as WEB/DL classes or ITV/DL classes on WebAdvisor.
SUCCEEDING IN COLLEGE
TCCD.EDU
The secret to getting through college is not so much
brainpower as will power and time management.
Students need to view their college years as an investment of
both time and money. There are certain things that students
can do that will help them to be successful in college.
Tips for College Success
• Get help in developing an educational plan. See advising
and counseling for career counseling and degree plans
tailored for your major.
• Identify your goals, strengths and weaknesses.
• Identify and utilize your campus “help” resources. Tarrant
County College provides numerous tutorial services for free,
so make the most of these opportunities.
• Build a study plan, including when and how much you’ll
need to study to meet your goals.
• Attend every class and arrive on time! However, if you must
be absent, make arrangements to share notes with a
classmate.
• Keep up with the goals of the course and actively involve
yourself in the course content.
• Develop questions about course content to clarify your
understanding.
• Participate in class discussions to try
out your own
understanding
of concepts and
to raise
questions of
importance.
• Study with a
partner. Research
shows study
groups are a very
effective way to help
you reach your full
academic and social
potential.
• Study at a specified
time and in a place free
from distractions.
• Attend student success
workshops. Tarrant
County College offers
various workshops to help
you achieve your personal
and educational goals.
