Educational psychology encompasses the<br />
nature of learning, development, motivation,<br />
diversity and assessment. The major areas of<br />
emphasis for this course include the<br />
development of educational research as a<br />
science; developmental psychology's impact<br />
on education; effective teaching techniques<br />
and strategies; behavior management and<br />
discipline; tests and measurements.<br />
Intelligence, achievement, exceptionality,<br />
and diversity will be discussed.<br />

Thinking<br />
This is an introductory course in counseling<br />
techniques for the paraprofessional. A brief<br />
overview of theories will be presented.<br />
Major emphasis will be on learning and<br />
practicing counseling skills primarily for<br />
paraprofessional positions. Such situations<br />
as outreach work, crisis intervention, group<br />
work, multi-problem families, hard-toreach<br />
clients, and collaborative work with<br />
other agencies will be explored.<br />
Prerequisite: HSE* 108<br />
A study and comparison of theories of<br />
personality. The course includes a study of<br />
what makes a theory, criteria for analyzing<br />
theories and case studies for application of<br />
theories. The theories studied are:<br />
psychoanalysis, behaviorism, cognitive and<br />
social learning theories, person-centered<br />
theory, and analytical theory.<br />

The development, causes, and treatment of<br />
abnormal behavior are studied. The<br />
disorders include: anxiety disorders, mood<br />
disorders, schizophrenia, substance abuse,<br />
dissociative, personality, and sexual<br />
disorders. The role of stress and genetics is<br />
emphasized. Theories of personality related<br />
to disorders are introduced along with the<br />
therapies related to these theories.<br />

This course will investigate the tenability of<br />
the basic philosophical premises of the<br />
Skinnerian Movement. The practical<br />
extensions of these premises will be studied<br />
in considerable depth. Specific areas of<br />
application will also be studied.<br />

Recent Discoveries in Science is intended<br />
for those persons who wish to learn basic<br />
science by investigating new developments<br />
in science. The direction learning takes in<br />
the course will depend upon the confluence<br />
of topics and ideas created by the<br />
participants.<br />
Prerequisite: ENG* 101 (may be taken<br />
concurrently) or permission of instructor<br />

Understanding<br />
A study of the principles of interpersonal<br />
interaction and of the formation of<br />
attitudes and prejudices within groups and<br />
nations. The course includes dynamics of<br />
individual motivation in social situations,<br />
the theoretical bases for social behavior,<br />
and application of principles of behavior to<br />
attitude change. Prejudice, public opinion,<br />
and individual reactions in mass behavior<br />
are examined.<br />

The industrial/organizational environment<br />
defined in human terms. This course is a<br />
survey of theories, methods, and issues<br />
involved in the application of<br />
psychological principles in work settings.<br />
The following topics will be covered:<br />
measurement, personnel decisions,<br />
training, performance appraisal, worker<br />
motivation, job satisfaction, leadership,<br />
work design, and work conditions.<br />
Prerequisite: PSY* 111 or PSY* 112<br />
This course will deal with variations in sexual<br />
attitudes and behavior. Students will study<br />
the interaction of physiological, emotional,<br />
cultural, legal, and religious influences on<br />
sexual behavior. Some of the topics to be<br />
covered are healthy sexual interactions,<br />
sexual preferences, sexual anatomy, and<br />
development and theories of sexual<br />
behavior. In addition, sexual diseases,<br />
disorders, and therapies will be discussed.<br />

A course about the process of science and its<br />
unifying method. Topics include an<br />
examination of the nature of science, the<br />
scope and reliability of scientific<br />
knowledge, the relationships between<br />
science and culture, and the characteristics<br />
of pseudo-science. Scientific theories are<br />
studied as cases by which to understand the<br />
methods used by scientists. Effective<br />
communication is emphasized.<br />
Prerequisite: ENG* 101<br />
A look at ideas presented as science in<br />
modern literature. An examination of why<br />
certain "scientific" theories are not<br />
considered science by most of the scientific<br />
community. The course will also explore<br />
certain outlandish ideas which, while they<br />
are not accepted by most scientists, are still<br />
considered "scientific."<br />
