can seem a bit overwhelming, 

but 22nd Century Media 

and Jennings On The 

Park’s annual Active Aging 

Expo will help make 

the transition a little easier. 

“We are not meaning 

this to be a dark and dismal 

thing about planning for 

the final phase of your life, 

but we do have people that 

can help you with that,” 

said Heather Warthen, the 

chief events officer at 22nd 

Century Media. 

The third annual Active 

Aging Expo will take 

place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. 

on Oct. 15 at the Hilton 

Chicago Northbrook and 

will feature more than 25 

vendors who are ready to 

talk to community members 

about active aging. 

“We bring in a variety of 

vendors to help for planning 

for the rest of your 

life, whether it is financial 

planning or finding a senior 

care facility that you 

may utilize in the future,” 

Warthen said. 

Among the vendors 

are GymGuyz, who will 

kick off the event with 

active stretching, as well 

as a variety of health and 

wellness groups — such 

as NorthShore University 

HealthSystem and Elite 

Wellness. 

The vendors will help 

community members prepare 

for the next phase of 

their lives by giving them 

the opportunity to talk to 

professionals one-on-one. 

“[The expo] provides 

[guests] the opportunity to 

meet face-to-face in one 

central location so they 

don’t have to make several 

appointments and go all 

over the place,” Warthen 

said. 

New to the event this 

year will be guest speaker 

and ABC 7 News personality 

Janet Davies, who 

recently started her own 

news company, Janet Davies 

Media, at the age of 

60. Beginning at 10:30 

a.m., Davies will discuss 

her previous career as 

the host of 190 North on 

Channel 7 and her experience 

hosting the New 

Year’s Eve celebration for 

ABC 7 Chicago. 

“We think she will be a 

great speaker and kind of

Meet Fina Liga: Retired restaurateur, Chestnut Square resident 

Growing up in rural Sicily, Fina Liga 

first met her husband, Antonio, when 

they were children living in neighboring 

houses. After falling in love, getting married 

and starting a family, they followed 

Liga’s parents and siblings and moved to 

downstate Illinois. 

The close-knit group shared a passion 

for authentic Italian cuisine, and in 1964, 

Liga’s father and brothers opened Manzella’s 

Italian Patio Restaurant in Champaign, 

Ill. 

The restaurant, which was an instant hit 

with students and professors at the University 

of Illinois, is still thriving today. 

“A few years after Manzella’s opened, 

my husband and I decided to start a second 

restaurant on our own in nearby Tuscola,” 

Liga said. “We named it Liga’s Steak & 

Pasta House.” 

Liga, her husband and their three children 

took tremendous pride in Liga’s and 

were hands-on with every aspect of the 

business. 

“We’d wake up before dawn and usually 

worked seven days a week, but it was 

a lot of fun,” Liga said. “We grew very 

close with our customers and the City of 

Tuscola even named a street after me.” 

After selling Liga’s in 2004, Liga and 

her husband enjoyed visiting their 10 

grandchildren and vacationing abroad, especially 

in Italy. 

When her husband passed away in January 

2015, Liga moved into an apartment 

complex in Glenview to be closer to family. 

However, she quickly ended up not 

liking her new home. 

“I didn’t like the building because 

it was so quiet and lonely,” she said. “I 

wanted to be around other people so after 

a couple months, I began searching for a 

lively retirement community.” 

After visiting Chestnut Square at The 

Glen, Liga immediately knew she had 

found the right place. In December 2015, 

she moved into her new one-bedroom 

residence. 

“I’ve made so many new friends here,” 

Liga said. “I love being busy every day 

and I never miss an exercise class. It keeps 

me young. Plus, now I can let someone 

else worry about dinner!” 

Liga’s daughter, Frances Fiorentino, 

said her family has found deep satisfaction 

in seeing their mother flourish at

Luther Village 

celebrates 25 years 

of excellence 

Luther Village, an active-adult 

retirement community set along 

a series of ponds with bridges, 

waterfalls and a fishing pier in 

Arlington Heights, is celebrating 

its 25th anniversary this year. 

A butterfly garden was created 

to commemorate the anniversary. 

The Luther Village Spiritual 

Enrichment Foundation made a 

generous donation of $15,000 to 

create the garden. 

For 21 of the last 25 years, the 

community has hosted a multigenerational 

annual Luther Village 

Fishing Derby. Residents 

and their families — including 

great-grandchildren, grandchildren, 

adult children and their 

parents — attended the Fishing 

Derby on July 30 either as onlookers 

or as one of the 150 people 

competing for fishing prizes. 

At a winners’ ceremony in the 

Summer House, the campus’ 

outdoor activity center, adults 

and children received prizes for 

this catch-and-release event, in 

categories including the biggest, 

smallest, most caught. 

Luther Village itself is a good
