International Food Festival
The offer of free food from around the world was
enough temptation for over 1,000 people to attend
the Iceni Partnership organised event in Swaffham’s
Assembly Rooms on the 18th September.
The twenty nationalities represented all live in
Swaffham and represent a diverse community that
is working, eating and drinking together as shown by
the marvellous relaxed atmosphere in the Assembly
Rooms, as young and old moved from table to table
sampling the many different foods and drinks on offer.
Slovakia, Romania and Poland were first time
exhibitors along with Charlotte who helped introduce
the idea of eating vegetarian/vegan food, which by
general consensus was delicious.
Plans are already underway for a Food Festival 2017
which will, at this early stage, include an evening of
poetry and short talks/tales on food, an exhibition
of local food and drink producers and, of course, the
hugely popular ‘International Food Festival’.
Icenima
The third Wednesday of the month screenings are
proving very popular with a full house watching
‘West Side Story’, all two and a half hours of it!
Future 2pm presentations include ‘The Graduate’
in October, starring a very young Dustin Hoffman,
and an early Christmas treat of ‘The Nutcracker’ by
the New York Ballet (£7.50 pp instead of the usual
£4 ticket price).
Swaffham Blooms!
A certificate celebration of one of Swaffham’s
hidden gems occurred in September when Cllr
Brenda Bowler presented Chris Rainbow and
other Suffield Court residents with their Anglia
in Bloom ‘Best Individual/Community Floral
Display’ award. The more able members of the
community tend the lawns, pots and borders for
all to enjoy in their secluded courtyard garden
which is conveniently placed close to local shops
and amenities in the centre of Swaffham. The
theme chosen by Iceni Partnership’s Customer
Liaison Officer Jonathan Reed was ‘inclusion’.
“The ethos of this sheltered community sums up
what is quite a Swaffham thing, where people
of all abilities come together with the aim of
making their environment a nicer, friendlier
place to be”. Jonathan added, “It is as much a
social thing as anything else, a chance to have a
chat over a cup of tea keeping the mind active
even if the body is less willing”. Suffield Court
was one of only four nominations in the Anglia
in Bloom ‘Best Individual/Community Floral
Display’ category helping Swaffham gain a Silver
Gilt Award overall for towns with a population
over 6000 but under 12000.
Next year the mantle of co-ordinating Swaffham’s
Anglia in Bloom entry will be the responsibility
of the Town Team. Swaffham Town Team is a
group of like-minded people with a core team
consisting of town councillors, Iceni Partnership
representatives and business and education
experts who want Swaffham to be a better
place to live and work. One of the Town Team’s
current objectives is to promote the concept of
Pride in your Community throughout the town,
organising a network of volunteers to look after/
take care of their own immediate neighbourhood.
”The response has been overwhelmingly positive
and we now look forward to taking the next
steps to move forward. The more people we can
encourage to take part the better, local residents
and businesses alike” said Town Team Chairman
David Wickerson “and as an example of such
involvement it was great to see Sally Palmer,
Iceni Partnership’s Youth and Community Officer,
recently organising a Young Peoples Social Action
Group litter pick up along the Bears Lane railway
track footpath – thanks Sally and a big thank you
to the young people of Swaffham for showing the
way”. Swaffham’s 2017 entry to Anglia in Bloom
will be helped by an Iceni Partnership intern who
starts their six month stint at the Community
Centre offices later this month.

Swaffham Junior Academy
St Peter and St Paul’s Flower Festival took place
over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Swaffham
CofE Junior Academy was very proud to be asked
to produce art work to be used for the posters,
flyers and brochures to be used to advertise the
festival as well as to produce an art exhibit for
the festival itself. The theme of the festival was
stories from the Bible and we chose to illustrate
the story of Joseph and his Multi-Coloured coat
with a felt picture of this colourful coat made up
from strips of felt and decorated by individual
children in the school. Around the coat was a
summary of the whole story, decorated by the
children with multi coloured designs.
“Our coat of many colours is made up of our
decorations that we designed,” Faye Girkin
“When it was finished I was really surprised by
how it looked!”
Neve Weedon
“Really cool, like a rainbow!” Kiefer Stibbon
Let The Child In You Escape
Patisserie Iceni will be hosting a colouring challenge
every Wednesday afternoon from 1.30pm onwards
that offers everyone, regardless of their age, a
chance to express their artistic talents, spend time
socialising and let that child, that hides inside us all,
escape for a couple of hours.
Colouring and Dot to Dot sheets and pencils will be
supplied FREE, all we ask is that you enjoy yourself in
the company of like-minded people and have a Coffee
or Tea and a piece of splendid cake, which will be
offered at a discount package price for all colourers.
Rainbow Community Choir
A Letter to the Almost Member
So we’ve started our new term and we all thought you
would be there. It’s always difficult starting something
new and singing can seem quite daunting. But it’s
incredibly rewarding. Our choir is not necessarily
made up of people who have sung all their lives but
we do make a good sound singing world folk music
which has amazing rhythms and harmonies.
A word of warning here. Don’t be put off because we
sometimes sing in different languages. We learn the sounds
in small sections just like a child learning a nursery rhyme.
Many of us have only been singing a short time and
we know the first few weeks can challenge your
confidence. Your confidence will grow and nobody is
singled out to sing alone. We sing unaccompanied in
four parts: soprano, alto, tenor and bass and you will
soon find your pitch. You might think it is impossible
to know which part to sing but this will all fall into
place quite naturally. We practise together by just
singing. No auditions, no music and great guidance
from our musical director, Linda Roast.
Have a listen to our music on our website www.
rainbowcommunitychoir.org.uk to see what we and
you can achieve. We’re very proud of our small but
beautifully formed choir which is now in its fourth
year but we do need you. Please come and join us.
We meet weekly (term time) at Swaffham Community
Centre and more information is on our website. Visit
our Facebook page, you can contact: Alan on 01760
724308 or Anthea on 01760 336313 or speak to one
of us at our Christmas concert on Wednesday, 14
December in the Swaffham Parish Church at 7.30pm.
Convent Welcomes 5 New Members
The Swaffham Sisters at the Sacred Heart Convent
have received a huge boost with the addition of five
new or prospective young Sisters, almost doubling
its previous total of seven, and the first from England
in almost 40 years.
In an extremely rare public ceremony, the Daughters
of Divine Charity welcomed two Novices and two
Sisters. The two Novices – Sr Mary Gonçalves and
Sr Anna Yeo – were admitted to the order and the
two Sisters – Sr Renata Pivarnikova and Sr Michaela
Switaj – took their first vows at a Mass presided over
by the Bishop of East Anglia, Rt Rev Alan Hopes, at
Our Lady of Pity church in Swaffham.
Such ceremonies usually take place in private inside
a Convent but a special exception was made this
time because the two different stages of formation
taking place on the same day is very rare.
Other members of the Congregation, whose Mother
House is in Austria and has over 1,000 Sisters worldwide,
were present at the Mass.
In the English Vice-Province of the Sacred Heart, the
Sisters run the Sacred Heart School in Swaffham, St
Joseph’s Little Scholars nursery in Chesterfield and St
Theresa’s care home in Hunstanton.
Sr Anna said: “In the parishes where our Convents
are situated, many of the Sisters are Extraordinary
Ministers of Holy Communion, visiting the sick, the
elderly and housebound, working in youth ministry
such as Confirmation groups, University chaplaincies
and events for young adults, among other needs. All
our work is to make God’s love visible in the world.”
After two years in the Novitiate, Sisters profess the
vows of poverty, chastity and obedience for the first
time, as Sr Renata and Sr Michaela did during the Mass.
The ceremony was seen by a full church which included
members of the Sisters’ families and friends from
Poland, Slovakia, East Timor, Derbyshire and Yorkshire.
The fifth new member, Postulant Judith Charmak,
was welcomed into the Congregation in a simple and
private ceremony inside Sacred Heart Convent on
the previous day.
The Congregation had not seen so many new Sisters
in England for decades.
Sitting by the Fire.
The days have shortened and there is a sense that autumn
is here. Autumn is a thoughtful time. It has a special
beauty of its own with wonderful earthy smells in the
early morning. It brings the clear autumn sky and the
bright moon at night. But it also means dark nights and
dark mornings are on their way! The darkness of autumn
and winter do bring others moments to savour. One of
them is sitting by the fire. In my last presbytery there
was a wood burner and I loved to sit by it and watch the
flames. It reminded me of my childhood days when we sat
by the coal fire in winter often the only heat in the house.
It was a special focal point of gathering and warming. For
our ancestors when the sun went down it was time to
light the fire. For millions of years we humans sat around
fires gazing into the flames and embers with the cold and
darkness on our backs. It would have been a time for story
telling or sharing the events of the day past. Or maybe
just to sit by and be thoughtful. The fire was comforting,
magical and necessary for survival!
Nowadays this necessity has gone, and with it all opportunity
to be still and thoughtful. In today’s world houses are built
without fire places. They are deemed unnecessary and
impractical, or maybe an occasional luxury to create a
certain mood, like we see in some nice old pubs! All we do
now is switch on the central heating and switch on the lights!
We can light up our homes and switch on the heat instantly.
Now I realise that I might not want to return to those harsh
days, and I’m not so pleased when the central heating isn’t
working! but I do lament the loss of something that our
modern lives do not give us., something our ancestors had.
We fill our lives with busyness and with endless doing of
things. Life gives us very little time nowadays for just being.
We have precious few occasions for the mind to just be at
peace and to just settle by the fire.
Instead we watch television at the end of the day. We
submit ourselves to a bombardment of noise and
‘entertainment’. We fill our heads with endless news and
trivia and other peoples adventures. Watching television
leaves less and less room in the day for stillness and peace.
It has the capacity to soak up our time, our stillness and
our lives! I once heard television described as ‘bubblegum’
for the mind! Of course, television is not bad in itself, but
we do need to filter it in our daily lives. Don’t let it rob you
of precious moments.
We can develop other habits to bring ourselves back
to some stillness. Sitting still and connecting with your
breathing, just being present to your life is a way of
bringing calm a bit like sitting by the fire. If we allow
ourselves to just be there in the moment, we can stumble
upon an ancient stillness that was always there not unlike
the people of a simpler time found by sitting by the fire.
Sporle Afternoon WI
Oh what a lovely day we had - the day we
went to Doddington Hall, an outing on a
sunny day with fellow members and friends. A beautiful
house, a friendly guide, with gardens to enjoy and
what delights awaited us there! Statues and sculptures
greeted us at every turn – some to make us smile, some
to make us “blush” and some that we would dearly love
but - no cash to make the sale!
Just one more reason to belong to Sporle Afternoon WI
– meetings every 3rd Tuesday 2pm-4pm
The Pickenhams’ WI
After our Summer Break which included
our annual mystery tour which included
visiting Langham Glass in Fakenham, ride on the Poppy
Line. Lunch in Sheringham and tea at Bircham windmill
plus our lovely Tea Party in Carolyn Vincents lovely
cottage garden we are back to business as usual.
Beginning with a rendering of “Jerusalem” ( the music
written to rouse the troops in 1916) we set off.
Our speaker this month was Ann Francis a delightful
lady who led us in her “ Fitness for Fun” session. A lovely
simple form of exercise which lifts the Spirits as well as
the body!
Our competition of Autumn Flower arrangement was
won by 1st---- Pat . 2nd--- Sue Potter.
Next meeting 11th October 2pm in the church.
Speaker-----Ken Jeffery-- Life on the Buses.
Competition -- Apple Pie or cake
Swaffham Evening WI
We met at the Church Rooms at
7pm this month because we were
celebrating our birthday.
Cheese and Wine was served to forty of our members
followed by a beautiful homemade birthday cake.
During our tea party we were entertained by a clarinet
player who covered a wide selection of popular tunes.
There was a little bit of business to cover, but that did not interfere
much with our party and the raffle was called at the end.
Next month we are looking forward to a
demonstration of Indian cuisine and a chance to
taste some of the dishes.
If you want to come and find out about us you are
very welcome, just contact our secretary on 01760-
722879 and she will be pleased to give you details.
Beachamwell WI
What a wonderful summer we have
had with the WI. Two events were
held in August. Firstly the monthly meeting which
was certainly different and most enjoyable. It started
with a video made in the early 50’s showing families
enjoying themselves at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft
and included a new facility called Butlins Holiday Camp!
There were so many people on the beaches and in
the sea (how times have changed), all were enjoying
donkey rides, Punch and Judy, candyfloss, rock and ice
cream cornets etc etc. This led to group work discussing
childhood memories of holidays enjoyed.
Swaffham Players
In a tobacco factory in 1950s Nottingham
a group of ladies become good friends on
the production line. Cyn is an aspiring
starlet, beautiful and sassy; Vee has just got
married but feels insecure about what her
new situation requires; Glad has a dark but
wonderful secret; and Mae, who comes to
work in the big city, has a warm heart and
an open mind, and might just rescue them
all in the end...
Directed by John Hooker the latest offering
from the Swaffham Players 'Player's Angels'
by Amanda Whittington is taking place at
The Barn Theatre, Sacred Heart School,
Swaffham on Friday 28th & Saturday 29th
October at 7:30pm. Tickets are available by
calling Brian Hubbard on 01760 721899 or
from the Green Parrot.'
The second was the Garden meeting held at the Old
Rectory and it was delightful – very relaxing. The
weather was perfect; the garden was brilliant as usual
and the strawberry cream tea scrumptious.
September is the month when the Members plan
the meeting, giving the Committee a well deserved
rest. The Speaker for the evening was Pippa Pease of
Personal Creations who gave a very interesting talk and
demonstration on dressmaking. This followed a fashion
show by members of her class and some WI Members.
At the Beachamwell Fete and Country Fair which
was held in September, we provided afternoon tea
for hundreds of people - the selection of cakes was
excellent, quite outstanding.
Swaffham & District Lions
Swaffham Lions had the pleasure of
handing over a cheque to Swaffham
Rugby Club to support their minis
group. In the recent past Swaffham
Lions have supported local football and cricket youth
teams by sponsoring kit for the youngsters.
experience. Brilliantly acted with laughter and tears
and amazing facial expressions, the audience lived
the life of the famous comedy pair. The second
half of the evening took the form of a question and
answer session about Jeffery’s life, this turned out
to be highly amusing and informative. The evening
raised £1000 for EACH.
After two years of running the Swaffham Tesco store,
The £500 cheque was handed over, during their
coaching week, which is run by Leicester Tigers the
famous Premiership Rugby Club. Over fifty under
elevens attended the course, which focused upon the
four main skills, catch & pass, tackle, breakdown and
game sense. Leicester’s community development
team coach all over the world, some of the coaches
have just returned from Japan, where the next World
Cup is being held, coaching young Japanese children.
The England internationals Ben and Tom Youngs,
who play for the Tigers, come from this region.
The Swaffham club have over ninety minis on their
books, who enjoy the sport; some aspire to emulate
the Youngs brothers. Mike Fields, the president of
Swaffham Rugby Club, said that the donation will go
a long way to help kit out some of the youngsters and
make them feel part of a successful club.
A sell out audience at the Barn theatre were
enthralled with the performance by Jeffery Holland
as Stan Laurel in his one man show ‘This is My Friend
Mr Laurel’. A member of Swaffham Lions went to
school with Jeffery and has kept in contact ever
since. When he said that he would bring the play to
Swaffham for the Lions, the Lions decided to donate
the proceeds to EACH as a member of the club lost his
young grandson at a very early age. During his illness
the family were supported by EACH. The play which
has been performed across the country is about Stan
Laurel talking to Hardy about their show business
14
manager Scott Garrod is moving to a different store in
a similar role. To mark his departure Swaffham Lions
presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation for
all the joint work that has been carried out between
the Lions and Tesco. These have included foodbank
collections, diabetes and British Heart Foundation
collections to name a few. The Lions are looking
forward to supporting the new manager when he or
she arrives in a few weeks’ time.
The Swaffham Lions’ annual trip to the circus at Great
Yarmouth took place on Sunday 4th September. A
total of 33 children, parents, and family members
from the Swaffham area joined in the event,
which is organised by East Anglia Lions clubs, and
attracted hundreds of children, parents and carers
from all over East Anglia. The first part of the day
was an enjoyable coach trip to the Great Yarmouth
racecourse. On arrival, the children (and adults!)
were treated to a great show from a children’s
entertainer, before enjoying a picnic lunch. Then it
was off to the circus! The audience were thrilled by
the amazing acts that were on show and the children
particularly enjoyed the hilarious double acts by the
host and his comedian partner. During the interval,
ice creams for all were a treat for children and adults
alike. The second half was a spectacular water show
as the arena was flooded and the artists performed
their acts in and above the water. At the end of the
show, the coach returned the group to Swaffham and
everyone agreed that it had been a wonderful day
out, thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The recent collapse of a window at Oxborough
Hall led to a chain of events that meant that an
exhibition of embroideries, inspired by the 300th
anniversary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability’
Brown, had to be cancelled. Fortunately, the
embroideries are to be included in an exhibition
of work by East Anglian Embroiderers’ Guild
members to be held in the last week of October.
They will be on display in the Green Britain Centre
(next to Waitrose) as part of the Swaffham Visual
Arts Festival organised by Swaffham Rotary Club.
Looking at the Programme for our Visual Arts
Festival this year I am struck by the range of
venues that we have in Swaffham.
We start at The Nicholas Hamond Academy
on Friday 30th September with the illustrated
presentation by Peter Stevens on Car Design.
We then move to The George Hotel on Wednesday
12th October for Tony Bramley’s prize-winning
‘Suprematist’ photography, followed at the
weekend (15th/16th) by the Camera Club
Exhibition in the Drill Hall.
Thursday 20th October finds us in the Assembly
Rooms for Julia Stafford Allen’s guide to garden taste
and design through the history of garden visiting.
The following week the garden theme continues
in the Embroiderer’s Guild Exhibition in the Green
Britain Centre. Our film – ‘The Monuments Men’ – is
in the Community Centre on Tuesday 25th October.
Finally, we return to the Assembly Rooms for the
Festival Exhibition, preview evening on Friday 28th,
with viewing on Saturday and Sunday.
The range of venues shows that Swaffham does
not lack resources. The range of interesting events
in the festival programme shows that Swaffham
doesn’t lack resource. We hope that our Festival
patrons are equally resourceful!
Ashill & Holme Hale Garden Club
In August Charlotte Philcox made her third visit to
talk, this time, about ‘The Secrets of the Soil’. Being
the holiday season the audience was somewhat
smaller than usual but nonetheless enthusiastic to
hear what Charlotte had to say about the samples
of soil they had brought from their gardens.
A well balanced loam is a mixture of clay, silt and
sand. Charlotte explained the properties of each
element and showed how you can feel this by
rubbing the soil with your thumb and squeezing and
rolling it in your hand. The earthworm is a must for
healthy soil as it breaks down organic matter and
leaves holes for water and roots to penetrate. The
worm is so important that Charles Darwin wrote a
whole book about it. Research has shown that using
artificial fertilizers produces large leafy plants but
they then attract pests and few worms. Whereas a
two inch layer of garden compost on the surface will
attract worms to take it down into the soil producing
smaller but stronger plants. Also there is no need to
dig (hurrah!) as this disturbs the worms which are
mainly active in the first four inches of earth.
As an organic gardener, Charlotte uses leaf mould
to help retain moisture in the soil and home made
compost to replace nutrients. But if the small orange
tiger worms are still working in the compost heap
it is not yet ready for use on the garden. Charlotte
also extolled the virtues of seaweed in various forms
and the growing of green manure, such as phacelia.
However, while you can improve the composition
of the soil in your garden, it is virtually impossible
to permanently alter its acidity or alkalinity. Having
tested the PH with one of the many kits available at
the Garden Centres, it is best to work with nature and
stick to those plants best suited to the conditions.
Swaffham Lioness Club
Club President Nicola Claxton was delighted to
welcome our Multiple District Lioness Chairman
Angela Howard to one of our meetings, when we
badged up our newest member, Lioness Dawn Funnell.
Recently we have been out and about raising money
for various charities with our “Pick a Straw” tombola.
We took it to the 1st Swaffham Scouts Fete in July, the
Olympic Carnival Day on Campingland in August, and the
Community Hospital League of Friends Fete in September.
In Memory Of Carol
The Swaffham Lions are holding a Coffee Morning
and book sale on 12th November at the Assembly
Rooms, 9.30 – 1pm. The Macmillan Unit at the QE
would like eight special pumps to help their patients
but at £3000 each they are going to need help.
Swaffham Lions would like to donate a pump in
memory of Carol Gilding, the local post lady who sadly
died recently. Tickets will be available from Ceres Book
shop, the Market Cross and our businesses around
the town. Tickets can also be bought from any Lion
or call Pam Tallon on 01760 721550 for more details.
Swaffham Trade Association
Fundraising evening.
To all those who were unable to make it, you
missed a great evening of fun and enjoyment.
What you missed was the Swaffham Trade
Association’s first event in support of the town’s
Christmas Lights event.
It was an exceptional evening of fun, entertainment
and great food – all for a good cause. One hundred
guests enjoyed a memorable evening with the STA
Chairman Colin Mason giving a brief overview of the
STA’s plans for Christmas and beyond. The Parisian
Swing Band kicked off the evening with some really
foot tapping music, members and volunteers pulled
out all stops with a terrific buffet fit for a banquet.
SCALGA
What a lovely summer we enjoyed after a poor
start, I for one have not bemoaned the lack of rain
for the allotment I’m afraid the produce has had to
get on with it and allow me to enjoy the weather.
Having said that, the fruit trees have been laden, the
raspberries abundant and the salad stuffs delicious.
For once the potatoes were also scab free and we
luckily avoided blight. When you read this we will be
clearing up after the last of the above and getting the
soil ready for late planting and spring next year.
We held our afternoon tea on the 4th September,
about 25 plot holders attended and prizes were
given for the quality of the allotments. First prize
was given to Mr. B. Eves for the best kept single plot,
with Mr. B. Cocksedge and Mr. T. Beals as runners up.
Mr. R Joyner won the multiple plot category and Mr.
Mc.Mahon won the best starter plot prize.
A wonderful selection of cakes and savouries were
brought by members, we also ran a raffle which
raised £37.00.
Our next get together will be the Halloween meeting
on Sunday the 30th October, this is usually well
attended, last year it was wonderfully warm and we
were able to sit outside.
The Butternut Squash will soon be ready and those
of us who still planted 2 courgettes now have (as
usual) enough to feed a small army. Never mind, I am
sure we are all feverishly looking up recipes to deal
with the problem. Surplus will go to the chickens
who adore them and what is left the worms in the
wormery deal with and in the process make excellent
worm juice to fertilize the tomatoes etc.
Remember: - The gardening season officially begins
on the 1st January and ends on the 31st December.
Enjoy your gardening.
Starter Plots
SCALGA can now offer people who would like to try
having an allotment but could not face the challenge
of a 140’ x 40’ plot or indeed a half plot the chance
to dip their toes with plots 16’ x 16’ (approximately).
Double plots (32’ x 16’) are also available.
These would be ideal for.
• Families with only a little time available but wanting
to show their children or grandchildren where food
comes from and how it grows.
• People who would like to grow food under their
control free from harmful chemicals.
• Older people who would like to get out, do
something sociable, healthy and keep active.
• People who have found that a full or half allotment
is too much for them.
• People who would like to experience having a small
plot before perhaps moving on to a larger half or full plot.
25
There is no long term commitment other than the
monthly payment which can be cancelled with a
month’s notice. There is no reason not to have a go
Apples and Conversation
September saw the annual Apple Day celebrations
at the Green Britain Centre. We also welcomed our
new chef, Richard, who will be continuing to use the
apples in crumbles and pies adding blackberries,
plums and raspberries from our organic garden. Look
out for our new menus with lots of tasty vegetarian
and vegan dishes to make your mouth water. With the
Autumn term well under way, the summer holidays
seem a distant memory although the centre was
buzzing with visitors from all over the country taking
the trip up the windmill and enjoying the activities
and exhibits. Many have shown interest in our use
of solar and wind power and have asked about using
them in their own homes. If you are interested in
informal discussions on environmental topics, do
join us on the last Friday of the month at 10.30 a.m.
in the café for our coffee table conversation sessions.
Swaffham & Litcham Home Hospice
Swaffham & Litcham Home Hospice Support held their
Charity Golf Day at the Swaffham Golf Club on Friday 19th
August, which attracted sixteen teams to a day of golf and fun.
The day was very well supported by businesses, namely
Barclays, Carscene of Norwich, Adrian Flux of East Winch,
Su-Bridge of Saham Toney,Barefoot Retreat of Thornham,
BSA Mouldings of King’s Lynn, and others who generously
donated auction and raffle prizes to make the day the
success it was.
The charity auction which took place raised £1,000,
including a racing bicycle donated by one of our patients,
which alone raised £200.00. The grand total of monies
raised from the day, came to a fantastic £6000 an amount
way beyond our expectations.
Event organiser and Home Hospice Fundraising
Chairman, David Gulliver, said “Our congratulations go to
the winning golf team of the day ‘Team Tesco’, and we
would like to take this opportunity to give our sincere
thanks to everyone who took part.”
Two kind people celebrated mile stones recently namely
Joe Matthews who was ninety and Pearl Ramsey who
was eighty. Instead of receiving gifts they decided to
support our cause by donating money, Joe £105.00 and
Pearl £150.00; a big thank you to their family and friends.
experienced and receive on-going training to make
sure that we deliver only the very best quality care.
We really want to make a difference
From the Mayor’s Parlour
I have had the privilege of representing Swaffham
at different events this month. There was the
dedication of the Bull roundabout on RAF Marham,
it is fifty years since this was built, and it is 100 years
from when Marham was declared operational as a
training establishment in September 1916. As part
of the commemorations there was a list displayed of
all the squadrons that have been based at Marham
with the first one being No.51 Squadron.
I have been on a walk around Wisbech with the
Mayor of Wisbech and other guests. We stopped
at the Octavia Hill Museum, there is a lot of history
to see and it is well worth a day out. I opened the
Swaffham Cottage Hospital Fete, it was a wet day but
they moved stalls inside where lots of fundraising
was going on. We should all help them as much as
we can, it is a big asset to the town.
We have had some excellent news recently, first
we got a Silver Gilt medal in the Anglia In Bloom
competition which is brilliant, well done to all who
help make the town look good for the judging.
Secondly, we have been successful in securing a grant
to improve and update the Merryweather play area.
The grant was given by the Bags of Help scheme run
by Tesco and, at the beginning of October, you will
be able to vote for which scheme receives the higher
levels of funding. Please vote for Swaffham if you are
in Tesco in the first week of October.
It is a busy time of year coming up, by the time you
read this we will have had the Food Festival and the
Twinning Visit, and the Church gates will be in place.
The next big event is the Christmas Light Switch-On, to
be held on 25th November, I do hope you come along
and enjoy the market, entertainment and new lights.
Cllr Paul Darby, Mayor
In Touch With Your Town
The section ‘In Touch with
your Town’ is usually put
together by the Town
Clerk Richard Bishop or
occasionally by the Deputy
Town Clerk Claire Smith. It has
been kept under this heading as it stems from
when the Town Council used to produce its own
‘in house’ newsletter under the same name. It
deals with some of the most topical items of the
day and the odd item where the Council want to
share information with the Town.
Swaffham in Bloom
Congratulations to all involved in Swaffham in
Bloom, on 6th September the town was awarded
Silver Gilt from the Anglia in Bloom judges, a great
achievement. Suffield Court also received a well
deserved commendation as part of the judging.
The project brings together organisations and
residents from across Swaffham and makes the
Town attractive for all to enjoy. The outside
team do a great job looking after the colourful
displays in our Town Centre pots and tubs. We
will now be changing the plants for winter and
hope to have a number of tubs with winter
pansies in place for some winter colour. If you
would like to sponsor a pot, please contact the
Town Council Office.
Merryweather Road Play Area
This play area has been in need of refurbishment
for some time and with the help of Tesco Bags
of Money initiative we will be able to replace
the roundabout and spruce up the rest of the
area in the very near future. We have secured
one of these grants, and now need residents to
vote for our scheme so that we can access the
greatest level of funding and replace some of
the other equipment too. You can vote for this
Swaffham scheme in store from 31st October to
13th November.
Church Gates
The project to re-instate the Church Gates is
continuing and many of you will have noticed
the work going on in Church Walk. The old gates
have been refurbished by a skilled craftsman
and we are now in the final stages of making
sure they are hung and work to the best effect.
It had been hoped that they would be ready to
be opened at the end of September, but due
to unforeseen circumstances there has been a
slight delay. However we are hopeful that they
will be up and open by the end of October.
Cemetery Works
The Cemetery Chapel has recently been re-roofed
and the driveways have been levelled and resurfaced
with Tar-spray and Shingle, it is all looking much
better, with pot holes being filled along the way.
Job Vacancy
At the time of writing a full time (37 hours per week)
job vacancy has just become available within the Town
Council’s Ground Maintenance Team, but the finer
details are not ready in time for this publication. The
advert will be on the Town Hall Notice Board at the
front of the Town Hall, it will be on the website www.
swaffhamtowncouncil.gov.uk and it will be circulated
by Social Media on the Town Council’s Facebook
page and Twitter feeds. A job description and salary
details are available from the Town Hall reception
desk. The deadline for receiving applications will be
Monday 10th October and interviews are planned
for Thursday 20th October.
Christmas Lights Switch On Event
and Road Closure
The Christmas Lights sub committee, made up
of Town Councillors, Swaffham Trade Association
representatives and other interested individuals
are organising this year’s event, it will be on 25th
November. Preparations are well underway for the
arrival of Father Christmas, his Elves and Reindeer.
There will be entertainment from Fakenham Town
Band, Oasis Church singers, Thursford Steam Organ
and much more. The Market Place and road on the
west side will be taken over by a funfair for small
children and a Christmas Market. The Town itself will
be decorated with new lights for this year and these
will be switched on at 5pm. We hope that all residents
will enjoy the event and the way our town will be
lit up this year. So that we are able to prepare and
run the event in the Town Centre, please be aware
that there will be a road closure on 25th November
from 7.30- 10.30pm. The road will be closed on the
west side of the market place, from the Buttercross
roundabout up to the Swaffham Café.
National Power Cut Line 105
A free National Power Cut Telephone Line has been
launched. 105 is a new three-digit number that
people can call to report or get information about
power cuts. A lot of people don’t know who to call to
report or get updates about power cuts, with many
calling the energy supply companies they pay their
bills to. 105 aims to solve this problem, providing
people with an easy-to-remember number that will
put then straight through to their local electricity
network operator. 105 is jointly funded by electricity
network operators and wherever you live, 105 will
put you through to the right network operator
Free Stall Pitches
Swaffham Market Committee took a bold step
last month to try and attract new stalls to their
traditional Saturday Market, by offering FREE stall
pitches to new traders. The offer extends to one
Saturday in each of the three remaining months
of 2016, October, November and December. This
is followed by three full months FREE of charge
throughout the months of January, February
and March. ALSO so that there is a level playing
field, the existing licensed traders at Swaffham
Market will benefit from the same offer. Don’t
miss out on this chance to become a Market
Trader or if you know of anyone who might be
interested, please pass on these details to them
too! Contact Deputy Clerk Claire Smith to book
Mind, Body & Spirit
I thought this month we might talk a bit about
a very interesting crystal known as ‘Shungite’.
I currently use this crystal to purify my water
that comes directly out of the cold tap. I used
to use filter jugs that took out some of the less
tasty stuff I found in town water. Then I found
Shungite and now I just leave a piece in my
filter less jug.
The origins of this ancient two billion years old
Shungite stone is clouded in mystery. As how
it came to appear on this planet is unclear,
since it has only been found in the Karelia area
in Russia, but it is not new to the people of
the region, as Czar Peter was known to have
come to the region to use water that had been
infused with this mineral. It is an extraordinary
positive stone, and one that is beneficial to a
healthy life and using it may bring a variety
of blessings. It is the only natural material to
contain Fullerenes, which are powerful antioxidants.
Fullerenes were brought to our
attention when research on them gained the
scientists a Nobel Prize, because the Fullerenes
in this stone will cleanse water, and then
infuse it with a potent healing vibration. The
energy embodied within this ancient stone is
said to absorb and eliminate anything that is
a health hazard to human life and it has active
metaphysical properties with strong healing
powers.
At the St Petersburg Military Medical Academy,
they are examining the curative properties of
products and medicines made from Shungite
and it is the only known natural source of
Fullerenes, so this has made the scientists who
have been testing it extremely interested in,
not only its properties, but how mankind can
use it. So what might the planned future uses
be, well you may already expect to hear about
it being included in parts of a solar electric
generating device in place of silicone and in
make-up to stop UV damage. Some research
is now looking at the potential to help allergic
conditions including asthma.
Shungite is very difficult to come by and if
you are lucky enough to find a piece it usually
commands a price well in excess of many other
readily available crystals. It can be found in its
raw form or as a finished pendant, pyramid
or spherical shape. Its colour is black with an
occasional line or fleck running through it.
Well good luck with the Shungite hunt.
This month we have our last Mind Body Spirit
30
Exhibition in the Assembly Room on Saturday
8th Ocxtober and as ever will feature a
number of therapist, healers, readers and
remedies and of course the lovely Chrissy
and her teas and refreshments. For those
that haven’t yet made one of the Gong Baths,
we are pleased to say a further three will
happen this year the first on Sunday 16th
October. Next year we plan to have a once a
month slot at the Assembly Room and hope
to see many of you returning.
Finally I can confirm we have started to run
Sound Journey treatments in Sporle and will
be delighted to hear from anyone who feels
they might benefit from this type of treatment.
Enjoy the seasons of mists and mellow
fruitfulness (thank you Keats).
