windswept

give me taste of salt and windswept
lifting fog and lilting sunset
sailing down back harbour,
out but back for tea.
berry picking on the hillside
boats moored carefree,
low and high tide
and the sound of gulls,
that’s where I want to be...
~Daydream: Sir Christoper Ondaatje

You can take the girl out of Nova Scotia, but you can’t take Nova
Scotia out of the girl. I grew up in glorious Nova Scotia, Canada
and it instilled in me a love for windswept places by the sea. My
dreams are often filled with windy days and seagulls, and I long for
the wild scenery that was planted deep in my soul.
For many years I have wanted to shoot a creative project in Nova
Scotia. The seed for this project came from a hike I did in Cape
Breton Highlands National Park years ago called the Skyline Trail. It
is a fairly long hike through barren meadows and scrubby trees that
have grown despite the odds on their windy perch. As you emerge
from the forest you find yourself on a ridge heading to a point – you
are hiking to the end of the world it seems. The view that awaits you
is so spectacular that it takes your breath away. You are standing
looking back on the sublime Cabot Trail with lush green mountains
falling into the sea and all seems right with the world.
I am indebted to Sir Christopher Ondaatje for consummately putting
my feelings about Nova Scotia into eloquent words. This project was
titled Windswept before we found his beautiful poem “Daydream”.
It is my hope that you delight in escaping, if just for a moment, to my
favorite corner of the world.
