22 EARLY YEARS INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING Early Years Initial Teacher Training is a specialist course designed for those already working or seeking to work with babies and children from birth to five years old. The course focuses on teaching and learning with children across this age range. Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) will be seen as equivalent to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as entry requirements to Early Years Initial Teacher Training (ITT) are the same as entry to primary ITT. Studying for the Early Years Initial Teacher Training (Early Years ITT) at Canterbury Christ Church University will give you the opportunity to train and be assessed as an Early Years Teacher against the Teachers’ Standards (Early Years). We have two graduate pathways and an undergraduate pathway for Year 3 BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies single honours students (please see undergraduate routes into teaching, page 27). All three pathways start in September each year. On successful completion of a graduate pathway you will be awarded a PGCE Early Childhood Education. You may have already achieved 60 Masters level credits and this will enable you to continue your studies by applying for the MA in Education (Early Years). PGCE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (WITH EARLY YEARS TEACHER STATUS) Graduate Entry Pathway Mainstream 12 months full-time This is a twelve month, full-time course suitable for high calibre graduates who have limited experience of working with children from birth to five, but who are looking to pursue a career working in early years. On this pathway you will work for some periods of the week in a minimum of two placements, undertake six taught modules at level 6/7 and attend Early Years Teacher Status professional study days. PGCE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (WITH EARLY YEARS TEACHER STATUS) Graduate Entry Pathway Employment Based 12 months part-time This is a twelve month programme for graduates employed in an early years setting. Trainees will undertake six taught modules at level 6/7 and attend Early Years Teacher Status professional study days. Trainees may be required to attend an additional placement experience, subject to individual needs and experience. 23 ASSESSMENT ONLY ROUTE Primary | Secondary Employment based route | flexible start date/must be completed within 12 weeks of official registration This is not a training course, but a route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for those who are already meeting the Teacher’s Standards at a good or high level and would therefore not need to undertake a full training route in order to achieve QTS. Applicants must have at least 2 years recent full-time teaching experience as an unqualified teacher in the UK, or longer if working part-time. You must be currently working in a school that supports the application. Employing schools must have the capacity to provide the necessary opportunities for the applicant to meet all the standards for QTS across the full age and ability range of assessment.
