DISCOVER! | OCTOBER 15, 2016 Pieces | 5 RYLAN HOWE | STAFF WRITER Former naturalist introduces exhibit at Nature Center Barbara Tagami was a naturalist in Dickinson County for many years. This fall she’s back at the nature center with several works of art on display at in the eARTh exhibit area at the Dickinson County Nature Center. The exhibit will be up through the end of December and features a variety of photos, prints, origami and more. “I call myself an eclectic nature artist,” Tagami said. “I was a naturalist for this county for 16 years. Nature has always been part of my life and I feel that nature is something that touches everyone, so what I do is take things that I find in nature and create with them.” Rocks collected can be crushed and ground down to produce pigment, which Tagami uses with the addition of a polymer gel to create vivid colors. Prints are done on hand-made paper. Origami resembles fish, turtles and other animals. A common theme throughout the exhibit is fish. Tagami characterizes herself as an avid fisherwoman and that influence is clearly scene in the work on display. “This is what I do to collect myself and get back in touch with the real world. The real world being the natural world,” Tagami said. “All too often we get caught up being anxious about Art different things in our life and when you go fishing or do something in nature, even if it’s something like taking a hike and sitting, taking the beauty of nature, that’s inspiring. So that’s what I do and it’s so much fun.” Tagami’s love of fishing prompted her to do fish printing. Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese method of printing fish dating back to the 1800s. It is from nature thought to have been a way for fishermen to record their catches, as well as a scientific method of identifying fish species. It also evolved into an art form in and of itself, which Tagami really enjoys. Origami is an art form of folding paper into various forms. It is something Tagami’s mom taught her and something she enjoys teaching to children now. “It’s a great way to get kids into doing art as well as improving their dexterity and eye-hand coordinaton,” Tagami said. In fact, Tagami will be teaching two classes, one on origami for children and one on fish printing for adults, in conjunction with the exhibit at the nature center. As for her own exhibit, Tagami hopes it brings a smile to anyone who stops to check it out and as well as an appreciation of how, in so many ways, nature inspires art in all of us. This class is geared towards children in second grade or older and Tagami will teach participants how to make origami butterflies. The second class will be Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 1-3 p.m. and will cost $20. This class is for adults and Tagami will be teaching how to make fish prints. Star Trekking: Think of the constellation Orion, and we often think of the hunter’s belt, but come October, the constellation also means meteors. This year’s Orionids meteor shower peaks on the morning of Friday, Oct. 21, and naturalist Charles Vigdal will focus on the shower during his next Star Trekking program at 8:30 p.m. that evening at the Dickinson County Nature Center in Okoboji.
