SIDEKICKS
Dear Reader:
Thank you for your attention to our picture and information. If you think
the picture is a nice image of harmonious singers, you are mistaken!
This picture is to be considered for a new promotion for an innovative
line of Barbie Dolls – Gracefully Aging Barbies. For your consideration:
Donna Knapp as Flabby Arms Barbie – Notice how her costume
comes with roomier sleeves and tummy-support panels.
Michelle Riggi-Smith as Bifocal Barbie – Her beautiful necklace doubles
as a neck chain for holding her glasses. She comes with large
print editions of reading material.
Jennifer Fogle as Exercise Barbie – Zumba, jogging and yoga are
her exercise styles. Her flabby thighs are hidden in the picture….by her
stomach!
Laura Covell as Hot Flash Barbie – Be careful around her as she
tends to ‘light-up’ with beads of perspiration. She is always seen carrying
a tiny fan and tissues.
For more information about the group, please find Ken or her sister,
Skipper.
For more information about SIDEKICKS, the singing group, please visit
our website www.sidekicksquartet.com.
Thank you!

MARY LOU McKINNEY
DIRECTOR
Mary Lou’s love of music began at an early age when she sang
a’cappella in the Church of Christ with her family. She met her
husband Dave at the age of 15 at a music school and they have
been making harmony ever since. She has studied voice privately
and was introduced to the barber- shop style of singing
when she and Dave moved to Youngstown, Ohio in 1969. She
joined Sweet Adelines in 1970 and throughout her musical career
she has been part of the regional and chapter administration
and has been an assistant director and director in Indiana
and Youngstown, Ohio.
Mary Lou is a Certified Director with Sweet Adelines, International.
This extensive course of study, along with each chorus member’s
hard work and an esteemed coaching staff of Kay Seymour, Alice
Kress and Dave McKinney have given this chorus many
awards with in the region and they are the home town pride of
Indiana County.
Her husband, Dave who is our coach and a behind the scenes
manager and confidant of our chorus is an active Barbershop
Harmony Society member . He sings with The Sweatermen Quartet,
with their family and encourage them and everyone they
meet to fill their lives with music.
MARY JANE GATTI
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
BASS SECTION LEADER &
CHOREOGRAPHER
Mary Jane Gatti hails from upstate New York, where she and her
six sisters spent many years studying piano, voice, and dance.
Last year her hometown paper in Rome, New York, published a
feature story about Mary Jane and her sisters, describing where
they are today, and how they have used their musical training
and experiences. Mary Jane has been a Sweet Adeline for 35
years, and has served in a variety of positions, including
choreographer, member of the Chapter Board of Directors,
chorus Treasurer, lead section leader, Director and Assistant
Director. She was chorus Director for five years, and Mary Jane
has attended numerous Regional and National Sweet Adeline
classes and seminars in choral directing and performance. Other
hobbies include golf, skiing, travel, and dance. Mary Jane and
her husband Bill have four grown children and ten grandchildren.
Chorus, and sang with them five years ago, in the International
Chorus Competition in Nashville, TN.
Mary Jane has a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education,
and a Masters degree in Counseling, specializing in elementary
age children. Her latest effort for the chorus has been organizing
Young Singers Chorus, to join with the Indi-Annas in
today’s performance. It is everyone's hope that young singers
will continue to enjoy barbershop style music, and the Young
Women in Harmony Chapter will continue to flourish. Working
with young singers is her favorite part of being a Sweet Adeline!
KAREN MACVAY
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR &
BARITONE SECTION LEADER
Karen MacVay grew up in the small town of Clintonville,
Pennsylvania in southern Venango County. The youngest of three
children to Oliver and Alice MacVay, she was the light of her
older brother and sister's life-until she learned to talk. And she
hasn't stopped since.
Talking very quickly turned to singing, and that hasn't stopped
either! At Franklin High School, she was involved in the Concert
Choir and Madrigal Singers, representing her high school at both
District and Regional Choruses. After high school she attended
Clarion University, and graduated with a degree in Music
Marketing. There she was also a member of both the Concert
Choir and Madrigal Singers.
Since joining the Indi-Annas in 2000, she has been involved in 2
quartets: "4 Good Measure", singing both tenor and lead, and
baritone in "On Common Ground". She has been on the board
of directors and has also held the office of President of the
chorus. She is currently the costume chairperson and has the
costume closet to prove it!
Karen has lived in the Indiana area for almost 20 years, 16 of
those years with her dog Oliver Boliver Butt. She is a huge Pirates
fan and plans on going to Spring Training next year to celebrate
her 50th birthday.

SWEET ADELINES INTERNATIONAL
HISTORY
At the dawn of the baby boom era, women who enjoyed singing
close harmony formed an organization known today as Sweet
Adelines International, a highly respected source of education in
the barbershop style.
"The original purpose for which Sweet Adelines was organized in
1945 was educational, to teach and train its members in musical
harmony and appreciation," Edna Mae Anderson stated. The
main goal was to create and promote barbershop quartets and
other musical groups; another goal was to give musicals, public
and private performances for, learning and general appreciation
of all the things pertaining to music. "The organization has stayed
true to its original goals, entertaining and educating thousands of
people every year. It may look and sound different today, but
deep inside its members are the same women aspiring to perform,
to achieve and to experience the joy of singing and the
thrill of ringing chords that weave harmony into lives and into
the world around us. Today there are nearly 23,000 members of
Sweet Adelines International in more than 1,000 registered
quartets and 550 choruses who are perpetuating the unique
American art form of barbershop harmony while looking
optimistically to the future in their quest to Harmonize the World!
INDI-ANNA CHORUS
HISTORY
The award wining Indi-Anna Chorus has been a part of Indiana
County for over 45 years. The chorus was originally formed as The
Indiana Good Time Singers, a barbershop chorus for ladies from
Indiana in 1971 and was first directed by Joseph McWilliams.
The chorus went on to join Sweet Adelines International in 1974
and chartered as the Indi-Anna Chorus. The chorus has varied in
size from the original 23 singer to as large as 44, with a current
membership of 29. Two of the chorus’s charter members still
singing with us today (June Wyne and Connie Hill).
The chorus competes annually with others from our SAI Region 17,
in Cleveland Ohio.
