KNOW MORE ABOUT BRUSSELS
9
Brussels, the heart of Europe.
Brussels has been appointed as the capital of Europe and the
Hub of the European Union with the EU institutions, NATO
headquarters, international organizations, politicians,
diplomats and civil servants.
Do you speak Belgian?
Belgians do not share one common language but have three
official languages: French, Dutch (Flemish) and German. In
Brussels, they mostly speak French but it is officially bilingual
(French-Dutch) so all public signs are in both languages.
English is also commonly spoken and you will also hear
here many other languages.
Brussels is a major trader of beers, fries, waffles and
chocolates.
Beer: There are more than 800 different beers on sale in 150
breweries in Brussels. Don’t take any random glass as most
beers have their own glass in which only that beer may be
served.
Chocolate: 220,000 tons of chocolate is produced per year,
which is about 22kg of chocolate per Belgian. The Brussels'
International Airport is the world's largest chocolate selling
point and it’s tax free!
Chips/fries: also commonly known as French Fries were in
fact invented in Belgium, not in France! Hungry? You can
easily find a ‘Friterie’ in the city. Also, Brussels has a fries
museum!
French Fries Chocolate
Beer
Brussels
Waffles: most waffles are served warm by street vendors in
touristic areas topped either with whipped cream, soft fruit or
chocolate spread. They are a snack or a dessert and are not
eaten for breakfast.
And what about Brussels sprouts? These have been cultivated
in Belgium since the 16th century! You don’t like Brussels
sprouts? It’s one of the the world's healthiest foods that
provides you with some special cholesterol-lowering benefits.
DISCOVER MONUMENTS
10
Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula
Just around the corner from the main venue Chancellerie
Auditorium, it’s a Roman Catholic church in Brussels often
used for Catholic ceremonies of national interest, such as
royal marriages and state funerals.
The Royal Palace
It’s also at short distance on foot through the Royal Park. It’s
the official palace of the King and Queen of the Belgians.
However it is not used as a royal residence, as the king and
his family live in the Royal Palace of Laeken on the outskirts
of Brussels.
The Palace of Justice or the Law Courts
It’s the largest court of justice in the world with 26,000 square
metres. And it has an amazing view over the west side of
Brussels with the view on the impressive Basilica of the
Sacred Heart.
The Grand Place or Grote Markt
It’s the central square of Brussels. It is surrounded by opulent
guildhalls and two larger edifices, the city’s Town Hall, and
the Breadhouse building containing the Museum of the City
of Brussels. The square is the most important tourist destination
and most memorable landmark in Brussels. It measures 68
by 110 metres and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Manneken Pis
Meaning “Little man Pee” in Dutch, is a landmark small
bronze sculpture in Brussels, depicting a naked little boy
urinating into a fountain’s basin. It was designed by Hiëronymus
Duquesnoy the Elder and put in place in 1618 or 1619.
You can also find the little girl (Jaenneken Pis) and the dog
(Peeing dog) located in other streets in Brussels.
The Atomium
It’s is an impressive building in Brussels originally constructed
for Expo 58, the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair located at
the outskirts of Brussels. Since it has became the national
symbol and has the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal
magnified 165 billion times. At night, it shines like the Eiffel
Tower in Paris.
