5 Ways your Business
can grow with a
Mobile App
Mobile applications were only
used by larger businesses
not so long ago. Now, more
ventures are relying on
apps to attract an audience
who prefer digital interactions with mobile
technologies. And the...
Mobile applications were only
used by larger businesses not so
long ago. Now, more ventures
are relying on apps to attract an
audience who prefer digital interactions
with mobile technologies.
And they are seeing amazing
results.
Here are five ways your business
can benefit from a mobile
app -
Increase Visibility
The more visible you are to
your customers or fans, the better
your position. And a mobile
app can keep you in their sights
for most of the day. How? Keep
in mind, in this day and age
the average consumer spends
over two hours on their mobile
devices daily. So, the fact that
these people spend more time
on their phones can be good for
business.
Here is an example. Let’s say
that you own a fast food chain.
There aren’t many customers
coming through the doors and
sales are dwindling fast. You can
get them to bite by launching an
application that allows them to
order food on the go. Throw in
some promotional deals in your
ads and you can draw the office
lunch crowd to your business.
Connecting with Customers
Speaking of drawing a crowd,
a mobile application is a great
way to connect with your audience.
Customer service isn’t
about face to face interactions
with prospects anymore; it can
also be done on a mobile screen.
This makes sense. A mobile
application isn’t subjected to
mood swings which mean that it
won’t lash out at a difficult customer.
Your mobile application
will always present the same face
to your customer - an interface
that provides them the best experience
every time they use it.
Strengthen your Brand
Brands that make it a priority
to connect with customers boost
brand value. A mobile application
that makes it easier for users
to interact with your brand establishes
trust. And the best part is
that you won’t have to be physically
present to ensure that this
happens.
The more audiences trust you,
the more likely will they listen to
what you have to say. What you
have to say can be in the form of
a sales pitch or promotions about
the products you offer. And if
they are likely to listen, they are
more likely to buy from you or
become loyal as well.
Stand Out
A mobile application is a great
way to make your business stand
out especially if those competing
with you don’t have apps of their
own yet. By the time they realize
how effective the tool can be,
your brand will already be way
ahead of them.
Once audiences realize that
they can get what they want with
a few taps, they will always turn
to your brand for their needs. In
time, you will have dominated
the entire market and set customer
loyalty in stone.
Team it up with your Website
If I already have a website for
my business, will I still need an
Android or iOS app for it? It is
natural for the business owner on
a budget to ask this question. The
answer is to understand the purpose
of both mediums and how
each of them benefits a business
in their own way.
Remember, the aim of a website
is to attract customers much
like how an ecommerce page
attracts buyers with pictures of
items and their prices beneath.
The aim of a mobile app, on the
other hand, is to create customer
loyalty. In the aforementioned
example, it would make it easier
for consumers to order products
from your ecommerce business
through its app. complement
your website with your app and
you will see results.
These are only some of the
ways a mobile app can help you
grow your business. Find out
yourself. It will be worth it!
The
Camping
Packing
List
The Camping Packing List can
make the difference between a
Really great camping trip, and a
complete disaster that nobody
wants to remember. Make the
packing List a part of your camping ritual
Camping is a great activity
and good fun for all of the family.
However, it is really important
to be prepared before you go
and to make sure that you have
everything.
After all, anyone who has
been on a camping trip before
and has forgotten one key piece
of equipment, such as a thermos
flask, will tell you how annoying
it can be!
There are lots of things to
think about but it is well worth
the time sitting down with a pencil
and paper before packing and
setting out exactly what it is that
you need to take.
This short article will run you
through some of the advantages
of making a list.
Before reading the list though
you might want to do a search
of the usual things that you
might want when you go camping,
such as enough clothes (layers
are helpful!) and all of the
right equipment for your tent.
Make sure you bring your sleeping
bags and enough food, drinks
and snacks.
4
Kzn Lifestyle Magazine • Issue 14
Anyway, on to the advantages
of doing all of this...
The biggest benefit is probably
to make sure that you don’t leave
anything behind.
If you have a physical list,
you can slowly tick things off as
they go in the back of the vehicle
or in your bag (so long as you
don’t forget the bag!). Once you
have made your camping packing
list it is a good idea to keep it
in a place that is easy to see, such
as on the front of the refrigerator,
so that you can easily add to it or
strike things off it as you go.
The other good thing about having
a physical list is that other
people can add to it as well.
There may be things that you
haven’t thought of that your partner,
kids, friends or whoever else
is going with you can think of
and would like to take. You can
always take it off the list once
they have put it on there but at
least it gives them that option.
There are lots of lists available
on the internet and it might
be worth using one of these as
a guide when making your own
list or check one after you have
made your list to see if you have
left anything major that you
might regret later.
It’s also really important to make
sure you put everything back in
the car when you leave the campsite
- too many people have left
without a tent peg or pole before
- it is easily done! Anyway, have
a great camping trip and we hope
this article has convinced you to
make a list before you go

How to Answer Tricky
Job Interview Questions
With Confidence?
The interviewer wants to fi nd out
about your motivation, primarily
she or he is interested in knowing,
what is it that you enjoy
doing and what is it that you do
really well.
It is said that cautioned is
forearmed, and a compilation of
tricky interview questions along
with the best answers is to be
sure an aid to watchful competitors,
enrollment specialists at
times love to flame broil applicants
and their interviewee wind
up on the less than desirable end,
bumbling for a reply.
The Best Possible
Light
It knows heretofore what
managers are truly up to, what
they are truly asking, and appropriately
pickup the different
strategies, that would in the long
run demonstrate the hopeful in
the most ideal light.
Find You Napping
Keeping in mind the end goal
to find you napping, a question
like this may be put over, educate
us concerning your most
prominent shortcoming. Well this
question is examining you about
your deficiencies, now passing
by your sense, when you happen
to be in a meeting like circumstance,
or a genuine meeting circumstance,
or a real interview
situation, you are going with
regards to in disguising your
imperfections to the best of your
capacity.
Positive Spin
Approach the entire circumstance
sober-mindedly, the best
thing to do is to outline your
reply in a way that has a Positive
Thinking with universejobspositive
turn to it. It is entirely conceivable
that qualities and shortcomings
happen to be the two
sides of the same coin.
Play the Potential Downside
This question can be replied
by playing the potential drawback
of what is maybe your
most noteworthy quality. Say for
instance you happen to be a characteristic
group laborer. Despite
everything you think that its hard
to adapt to the numerous contentions
that emerge, in the meantime
you think that its hard to
expect the exceedingly vital initiative
capacities and how would
you approach taking care of the
same.
What Motivates You
Another conceivable question
is the thing that inspires
you. The interviewer wants to
find out about your motivation,
essentially she or he is keen on
knowing, would could it be that
you appreciate doing and would
could it be that you do truly well.
Keeping in mind the end goal to
best answer this, you would need
to draw cases from your past
work encounters, extracurricular
exercises or even your studies,
which ought to present you in a
positive light as a hopeful who is
firmly inspired by the occupation
being referred to which he or she
is applying.
Strategies and
Strategies
Next likely question is the
manner by which are you ready
to organize your assignments and
deal with your time viably. Well
the response to this ought not be
only one case where you could
achieve this effectively. What
your questioner needs to truly
discover is the strategies and
techniques you utilize so as to
get yourself composed.
Time Management
Techniques
Be prepared to portray the
approach you are utilizing to
organize and list your errands.
Acquaint yourself with the time
administration procedures that
you would utilize and the way
you would place crosswise over
in the meeting.
Sidelong Thinking
They may be keen on thinking
about your horizontal deduction
abilities alongside some
dependable illustrations. Basically,
parallel speculation is the
capacity of a man wherein he or
she utilizes it to take a gander
at an issue with a new point of
view, and concoct a totally new
arrangement.
Exceedingly Prized
Employees with such a capacity
are exceedingly prized by
organizations, without them
companies can’t enhance or think
of imaginative thoughts, novel
and crisp items. Obviously, their
nearness impacts the top line and
all that really matters bigly, generally
the association is deprived
of their different take.
Last Words
In order to satisfactorily
answer this question,, you have
to consider those times when you
were confronted with issues, in
actuality, which appeared to be
impossible, however you by one
means or another contrived ways
and implies and could oversee
and beat them. It was very
conceivable that your answers
included an innovative approach
with a component of inventiveness,
this is precisely what the
businesses truly need to discover,
and you crossed the edge effectively
at this point.
Secrets of the Next Wave
Dear 21 year old me.
Joshua Cooper Ramo
Have you ever considered just
how you might start such a
letter to your younger self?
The question is a trick, of
course. It’s a way to ask: What
has the experience of career and life so
far really taught you? What single secret
might you wish to slip, like a fortune cookie
paper, into the pocket of your younger self?
Or, more practically: What do you want
to tell your 21-year-old child heading to a
fi rst job? The baby-faced executive working
in your offi ce? The one running your
company? Or even, perhaps more usefully,
this: What can I do differently in the future?
If you had to make a fast and
intense study of the secret to success
now, you could do worse
than scanning the names and
lives that follow on LinkedIn’s
2016 Next Wave list. The list
itself is kind of a miracle of technology.
Ages ago I was an editor
at TIME Magazine and we
always crabbed together those
fancy-sounding annual Time 100
lists with far less than the level
6
Kzn Lifestyle Magazine • Issue 14
of intellectual rigor you might
have hoped: “Hey, let’s add that
Peruvian ceviche master after the
Prime Minister of Australia?!”
And, sure enough, an artisan of
fluke, lime and chilies would
make it on the list. Ahead of Bill
Gates. Buzz sold.
The Next Wave is different.
It’s an attempt to use data to fillet
out of the world around us a
sense of what’s working now.
And, by implication, what’s not.
Our world runs on networks after
all—for medicine, finance, transportation,
just about everything.
These networks can be studied
and measured and understood.
So why not use them to tell us
something about work?
As you read through the Next
Wave list (or if you’re on it!)
you’ll discover one thing pretty
quickly. Animating all the brilliant
ideas, the moving personal
stories, and the historicscale
ambitions of each Next
Waver is this single insight into
what makes a powerful career
now: We are what we are connected
to. I don’t just mean connections
to people. I mean the
ideas you and I are tied to, good
or bad. The experiences. The
hopes. The puzzles we work on
as we drive or run or consume
our morning coffee. This list is a
stark lesson that if you’re making
an inventory of your life now
the right place to start isn’t with a
measure of what you have in the
bank. Or the market cap of your
firm. Or even your resume. No.
Try this much simpler and more
powerful puzzle: What am I connected
to? The people on the list
here: They have 25 times more
connections than the average
member on LinkedIn.
I have spent a good part of
the last few years trying to sort
out why some people and companies
and movements succeed
now, while others fizzle out or
implode. It’s something I think
about a great deal, not merely in
my day job as CEO of Kissinger
Associates or as a board member
at Starbucks and FedEx, but
also in considering politics and
history and economics. Why do
some nations fail? What’s happening
in our country now? I
have found that success today
in any endeavor is marked by a
kind of intuition about connection.
You and I look at a car and
think: “Car”. The Uber guys look
at it and see a revolution. The
White House looked at ISIS and
said, at first, “amateurs”, because
they couldn’t quite make out the
webs of power really at work.
In my own career, if I’m honest,
the biggest wins have come
from connection—not inspiration
or genius or drive. So if I were
speaking to 21-year old me? The
message would be fast: You are
what you are connected to.
What the Next Wave list cel-

ebrates is, in a sense, a new kind
of corporate athlete. Not merely
the team player, but the connected
one—the figure who has
that skill, whether working in
a traditional law firm or some
bleeding edge startup, to tie
together unique groups of people
or concepts into something new.
You’ll find on this list a data scientist
working at a fire department,
a Google executive flipping
ISIS wannabes back, and
the media entrepreneur who
turns her tools loose on the problems
of race, diversity and society.
In the past, there was always
an eagerness to celebrate the
great CEO or general or politician
who battled ahead on their
own, smashing obstacles with
the unbreakable club of their
egos. Those are the folks who
used to make up lists of this sort.
We know better now, I think.
The great executives or innovators
we celebrate here, the ones
whose breakthroughs we study
and consider in that “Hey, what
does this mean for me?” kind of
way, all drew on connection to
make their success possible.
If you look at any collection
of powerful careers now, no matter
how you sort it—venture capitalists
in China, aid workers in
Ghana, biologists in Amsterdam—real
success is marked
by an honest and useful mania
for connection. And this tells us
something about the age we live
in. A hunger for new links often
emerges during periods of really
radical change. During the Industrial
Revolution, for instance,
the very first scientific journals
and technical congresses came
into being as figures from around
Europe gathered to share ideas
and challenge old thinking. Or
think of the disappearance of
Latin as the dominant language
of scholarship. When, 400 years
ago, scholars began using ordinary
French or English, it was
because they wanted to connect
to an ever larger audience. “How
fast can our ideas spread?” figures
of that age asked. Little
wonder the great Enlightenment
philosopher Immanuel Kant
said the motto of his age could
be simply recorded as: “Dare to
know!” Our age? “Dare to connect!”
is not a bad motto for success.
What a list like this one
reminds us is that there is a certain
power that inheres in making
links. It’s the power of discovering
something new, of exercising
our empathy, of being open
to surprise. When I was younger,
a boss once gave me this advice:
Just do one big thing every year
and you’ll have a successful
career. Write a book. Launch a
new project. Change jobs. His
point was that in order to crack
through the white noise of our
daily work, we need to be sure
each year to strive for one big
leap.
I’ve tried to follow this advice
pretty carefully and found it’s
been a useful guide. But it’s clear
to me it’s not enough. Do one big
thing every year, sure, but this
too: Make a list of all the new
connections you want and then
ruthlessly jack them into your
life, one after another.
In my recent book The Seventh
Sense, I’ve called this
instinct to connect a whole new
skill—really a sensibility that
marks success now. I mean an
ability to look at the world, see
connection, and use it. It’s a skill
that can be learned. And it is
what will mark the winners and
losers of our age when we look
back several decades from now.
What the data tells us about the
Next Wave leaders is something
I think we all know by instinct
now anyhow: Success and connection
are really the same thing
now.
So let’s go back to the start.
Tell us: What would you tell
your 21-year-old self? Or your
51-year-old self? Something
about sales? Friendships? Connection?
What didn’t you know
then that would be of help now
to all of us as we try to figure
out this strange and exciting new
business world around us? Go
ahead: Connect us to your ideas!
(It’s the only way we may make
it to the Next Wave in our own
careers.)
Kzn Lifestyle Magazine • Issue 14

Growing health consciousness,
increasing disposable income,
value addition, product innovation
and growth in emerging
markets are currently driving
the global fruit juice market.
Fruit juices are prepared by
extracting the pulp of fruits or
by using artificial flavours. They
contain all the goodness of the
whole fruit in a condensed form.
Not only are fruit juices perfect
for today’s eat-on-the-run lifestyle
but are also a good source
of carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals,
antioxidants and phytochemicals
(protective compounds)
which are essential for
IMARC Group, the global fruit
juice market was worth 42.6 Billion
Litres in 2015. It is further
anticipated to grow at a CAGR
of 2% during 2016-2021, reaching
a volume of 48.2 Billion
Litres by 2021.
Consumers shifting towards
healthier drinks
Due to growing health and
dietary concerns, consumers are
now preferring healthier products.
As a result, fruit juices are
preferred over carbonated and
value, orange juice is widely
considered as one of the healthiest
beverages because of its innumerable
health and skin benefits.
It helps to boost immune system,
reduce signs of aging, fight
against cancer, boost metabolism,
detoxify the body, improve
circulation, improve blood pressure,
reduce inflammation and
lower cholesterol levels.
The global fruit juice market
can be segmented on the
basis of flavour. Orange juice
exhibited a clear dominance
in the market accounting for
35% of the total global market.
Orange juice was followed by
the emerging markets like Asia-
Pacific, Latin America, Africa
and the Middle East are expected
to flourish swiftly in the near
future.
Coca cola and PepsiCo dominate
the global market
The highly fragmented and
competitive global market for
fruit juice features a number of
small and big players operating
in the market. The market
is largely dominated by the key
global players who are extending
their presence worldwide,
particularly in the developing
regions like Asia-Pacific, Africa
and Latin America. These lead-
growth of the human body. Some
of the fruit juices help to fight
cancer and heart diseases while
others serve as the best non- prescription
drugs.
Fruit juices are commonly
consumed as a beverage or used
as an ingredient or flavouring in
foods. They are available in various
forms depending upon their
juice content- nectar (25-99%
juice content), juice drinks (25%
juice content), concentrates and
powdered Juice. Owing to the
refreshing nature, convenience,
nutritional benefits and good
source of instant energy, the fruit
juice market currently represents
a multibillion dollar industry.
According to research analysts at
soft drinks available in the market.
Changing lifestyles coupled
with increasing awareness about
the health benefits, fruit juices
have become a part of the everyday
diet.
In recent years, a key trend
has been an increasing focus on
high quality and premium fruit
juice. As a result, consumers are
willing to spend on premium
juices, be it for health reasons or
indulgence. Consequently, this
has prompted producers to invest
in the development of functional
and value-added juices.
Orange represented the most
popular flavour
With high concentrations of
vitamin C and its high nutritional
apple, mix fruit and grape juice.
North America represented
the largest market
On a geographical front, the
market has a presence in many
countries across the globe. North
America represented the world’s
largest market for fruit juice and
accounted for nearly 25% of the
total global market share. North
America was followed by Western
Europe, Asia-Pacific, Eastern
Europe, Latin America, Africa
and the Middle East.
However, as the demand
has more or less matured in
the developed markets, future
growth rates in these markets are
expected to decline in the coming
years. On the other hand,
ing players have a competitive
edge over small players in terms
of quality and pricing.
Coca cola and PepsiCo represented
the biggest players in the
market.
Other key players include Tingyi,
Huiyuan, Wild, Jugos and
Eckles. Looking forward, the
competitive environment in this
market is expected to intensify in
the coming years with a rise in
product extensions and technological
innovations.
BMW
show us the future of motorbiking
BMW presented its fourth Vision
Vehicle, the BMW Motorrad
VISION NEXT 100, to mark the
opening of its exhibition and
event platform, “Iconic Impulses.
The BMW Group Future Experience”, at
the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Los
Angeles.
According to BMW…
The key idea behind this
BMW Motorrad Vision Vehicle
is to create a pure, unbounded
ride experience. In the future,
the special sensation of freedom
will be made possible by even
greater connectivity between
rider, bike and the outside world.
10
The assistance systems in the
BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT
100 will not only anticipate and
advise when action is needed but
also intervene, when required,
to keep riders safe. Protective
clothing such as helmets and
padded suits will no longer be
needed. Instead, riders will simply
be able to enjoy the sensation
of absolute freedom. A key
assistance system in this Vision
Vehicle is the Self-Balancing
mechanism, which keeps the
motorcycle balanced both while
in motion and while stationary,
and prevents it from tipping over.
This technology consequently
allows all riders of any
level of skill or expertise to keep
on pushing boundaries for an
ever more positive ride experience.
Information is exchanged
between rider and bike largely
via the smart visor. This spans
the rider’s entire field of view
and provides not only wind protection
but also relevant information,
which it projects straight
into the line of sight as and when
it is needed. In terms of design
and function, the BMW Motorrad
VISION NEXT 100 takes
its cues from various striking
elements in the history of
BMW Motorrad, adding a contemporary
twist each time. The
black frame triangle, for example,
harks back to the first ever
motorcycle by BMW Motorrad,
the R32, made in 1923. Seen
from the side the Vision Vehicle
resembles a naked bike, with the
ergonomics and seating position
of a roadster. The forms and execution
of the power unit resemble
the traditional BMW boxer
engine, but it is actually a zeroemission
drivetrain.

Cleaning
Hacks
For
Chore
Haters
One of the most annoying things
about having a home is cleaning
it. Let’s be honest, if we had the
One of the most annoying
things about having a home is
cleaning it. Let’s be honest, if we
had the money to pay for a maid,
we would probably never clean
our own homes again. Well, I’m
here to tell you cleaning doesn’t
have to be as difficult or time
consuming as you may think.
They key to cleaning your home
is not cleaning longer, but cleaning
smarter. There are plenty of
hacks/tricks that can make cleaning
your home something much
simpler and faster. So here are
five cleaning hacks that are sure
to make your life easier.
Start being
more organized
from the get go
One of the main reasons a lot
of homes look messy in the first
place is because of clutter. Clutter
has a way of making the most
“clean” home look filthy. The
best strategy I have employed
in order to tackle this problem
is organization. Make sure all of
12
Kzn Lifestyle Magazine • Issue 14
your items have a specific place
where they should be. Put up
some hooks near your front door
so you can hang your coats,
hats and purses. Also, make sure
your closets,cabinets and shelves
are labeled for certain items.
For example, if you have a shelf
in the living room, you can use
it for remotes, magazines and
books.
Use your time
more efficiently
Most of us only spend 1-2
days a week cleaning our homes.
This is probably the most time
consuming method because
you will have a lot to do if you
don’t tidy up more often.You
should dedicate 10-15 minutes
every evening to picking up anything
that isn’t in it’s designated
spot. Don’t do this alone though,
make sure everyone in the house
pitches in so the workload is less
for everyone.
Wash each dish after it is
used I used to be one of those
people who would always wait
till all the dishes were dirty in
order to start cleaning them.
Nowadays, I clean each plate
after I
use it in order to lessen my
work load. I have actually started
telling everyone else in the house
to do the same and you wouldn’t
believe how much cleaner the
kitchen looks 24/7.
Create a Play/
Mess Room
If you have kids, this is probably
the best hack for you. With
kids in the house, it is virtually
impossible to keep your home
clean at all times, so designating
an area for your kids to play in is
crucial. You can even put some
bins and cabinets in there so they
have specific places to throw
their toys in when they are done.
Labeling these bins/cabinets is
also a great idea, it will make it
easier for your kids to clean up
and it will get them into the habit
of doing it.
Carpets
If you’re like me, cleaning
the carpet always seems like
a demanding task. The chore
becomes ten times harder when
ever you spot one of those
dreaded stains. Luckily, there
are plenty of ways to get rid of
these stains quickly and efficiently.
The one that has worked
the best for me has been spraying
the area with a mixture of 2 parts
water and one part white vinegar.
After you spray the spot, lay
a damp cloth over it and apply
pressure using a hot iron set on
steam. After about 30 seconds,
you can remove the cloth and
voila, the stain should be completely
gone. If the stain persists,
repeat this process until you get
the results you are looking for.
As you can see cleaning your
home doesn’t have to be as difficult
as it seems. All you have to
do is start cleaning smarter rather
than longer. As long as you follow
these tips, your life around
the house should get a lot easier.
Just take me for example, after
I started applying these hacks
to my daily cleaning routine, I
stopped wasting so much time on
chores. Now I have more time to
spend with my family rather than
cleaning the house. So what do
you think? Are these some hacks
you are going to try in your
home? If not, what are some
of the strategies you employ in
order to get the job done faster?
Let us know in the comment section
below.

Detox
Detox’ or detoxifi cation diets are
becoming incredibly popular,
largely due to their promises
to ‘cleanse’ your body,
eliminate toxins, make you
feel more energetic and most importantly
lose weight. Although they are not always
designed for dropping pounds, detox diets
often promote weight loss as one of the
main benefi ts of following such a diet.
However whilst following a
detox diet may be effective for
short term weight loss, it is by no
means a long term solution and
is often accompanied by risks
that far outweigh the benefits.
What is a detox
diet?
Detox diets come in various
shapes and forms, but most
are short term plans that are
designed to eliminate dangerous
chemicals and toxins from
the body, often with the added
bonus of weight loss thrown in.
The need to detox stems from
the idea that in our everyday life
we are exposed to a huge amount
of poisonous toxic substances in
the forms of pollution, processed
foods and other chemicals.
It is thought by some that this
build up of chemicals needs to
be removed from the body and
when this is achieved the bodies
systems will be more effective
and your metabolism will
increase, promoting weight loss,
as well as a general feeling of
energy and wellbeing.
Some detox diets take a natural
approach, promoting very low
calorie fasting, along with large
quantities of water, supplements
and varying amounts of fruit and
vegetables.
Others have their own supplements
and food replacement
ranges or suggest pills, enemas
and other intestinal or colonic
cleansing methods.
Whatever the method, detox
diets generally promote a very
low calorie diet that is unsustainable
and can even be dangerous
in the long term.
Experts agree that there is
generally very little evidence
supporting these types of diet,
and suggest that there is no real
need to limit food intake in this
way.
The body itself consists
of many systems, such as the
liver, kidneys and intestines
that are very efficient in removing
unwanted substances from
the body, leaving no need to use
such extreme methods.
Do Detox Diets
work for weight
loss?
You can lose weight in the
short term
The idea of a detox diet as a
weight loss tool has been widely
embraced, but whilst such a diet
may cause initial weight loss, it
is certainly not a long term solution.
As a general rule, if your
energy intake is less than the
calories you burn, you will lose
weight. Due to the extreme calorie
restriction when on a detox
diet, you are bound to drop at
least a few pounds. However,
as a detox diet is very low in
energy, during the initial stages,
this is likely to be due to a loss
of water.
Not a long
term solution to
weight management
Detox diets are generally
followed for short periods of
time, therefore any true weight
loss that is achieved during this
period is likely to be regained as
soon as the diet finishes and the
follower returns to their normal
eating pattern.
There is also the risk that
due to the extremely low calorie
intake, the body’s metabolism
has slowed down.
This occurs when the body is
not receiving enough energy and
goes into starvation mode, conserving
as much energy as possible.
If this occurs, when the dieter
returns to their normal pattern of
eating they are likely to gain not
only the weight they have lost
but also a few additional pounds
due to their decreased metabolic
rate.
In addition to this detox diets
are generally not nutritionally
complete and it is risky to follow
them for longer than the specified
time, meaning they are not
a long term solution to weight
management.
Whilst dieticians generally do
not support detox diets, seeing
them as unnecessary and in many
cases unsafe, there are some positive
aspects of these diets that
can be adopted in a healthy eating
regime.
A high intake of fruit and
vegetables, and good hydration
through drinking plenty of water
are all beneficial as part of a low
fat, high fibre eating plan for
weight loss.
There is also no harm in eating
less processed foods which
contain chemical substances,
a principle advocated by most
detox diets.
Are detox diets
safe?
There is a distinct lack of scientific
evidence when it comes to
the benefits of detox diets, with
most positive results reported
from testimonials of followers
rather than controlled studies.
There is also a potentially
dangerous aspect of diets that are
this low in calories and nutrients.
When on a detox diet it is
common to feel a lack of energy,
muscle aches, tiredness, low
blood sugar levels, dizziness and
nausea.
If a very low calorie detox
type diet is followed in the long
term this can lead to even more
serious health problems, such
as vitamin and mineral deficiencies
and electrolyte imbalances,
which have the potential to cause
the body serious harm.
Fasting diets are generally
safe for a few days in healthy
adults, but are not suitable for
those with underlying health
conditions, pregnant women and
children.
All detox diets should be done
under the supervision of a health
professional such as a registered
dietician or doctor and should
only be followed for a short
period of time.
Intensive physical activity
should be avoided when on this
type of diet.
A healthier way
to lose weight
There is no one diet that is
suitable for everyone, so it is
important to discuss with a dietician
or doctor before embarking
on any extreme or unusual
weight loss regime.
In general, a healthy weight
loss of about one to two pounds
per week can be achieved simply
by reducing your calories
slightly and increasing physical
activity levels.
A healthy diet that is low in
saturated fat and refined carbohydrates,
as well as high in whole
grains, unsaturated fats, fruit and
vegetables is ideal for optimum
health and well-being.
the drawback of not building
muscle, and why building
it quick can be so imperative.
Without bulk, you’ll without a
doubt have additional unneeded fat
in almost all aspects of your body.
Your bone thickness will decrease,
to sporadic sleep patters.
By setting out on a practice program
to develop muscles rapidly,
you will make a critical change to
your general well being. ou can
effectively fe build, strengthen, and
tone your muscles by using the following
tips.
Adopt a
program.
Set up a program that characterizes
correctly what practices
you will be required to perform on
which days. Taking after such a program
has been shown to be the best
and the quickest approach to to build
muscle mass. Shift the program by
occasionally targeting specific muscle
groups in addition to your regular
regimen of working for multiple
muscle groups at the same time.
Develop a Good
Form
Learn the proper way to practice
each exercise. Take in the best possible
approach to honing every work
best and speediest approach to constructing
muscle. Hone the activities
gradually and intentionally utilizing
of the work out. Be steady and in
control of every work out. You’ll see
results in no time.
Stretch Those
Muscles
You can’t build muscle or bulk
using.
Watch your diet.
Muscles are created in the
kitchen, not just in the gym. So
pay consideration on what you eat.
Tunisian sprint ace
Mrabet aims to
raise the bar in Rio
16
Kzn Lifestyle Magazine • Issue 14
Mohamed Ali Mrabet wins the 1000m Men's K1 fi nal at the African Championships
to secure his place at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Anthony
Grote/ Gameplan Media
From humble beginnings as a
curious 12 year-old novice,
Tunisian Olympian star Mohamed
Ali Mrabet will spearhead the
challenge from the African men at
the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with
bold plans to make his home country and
continent proud.
The 26 year-old from the historic
coastal city of Bizerte in
Tunisian has made headlines
since his arrival on the international
flatwater racing scene,
most notably when he twice
won K1 500m bronze medals
in World Cup regattas in 2012
ahead of the London Olympics.
Four years on, the cheerful
Tunisian is determined to show
that he can exert pressure on the
world’s best, particularly after
making the K1 500m A-final in
the recent Račice World Cup, a
week after hounding Canadian
ace Adam van Koeverden all the
way to the line in a dramatic K1
1000m semi-final in Duisburg.
Behind the cheerful exterior
lies a steely and highly competitive
athlete, driven by personal
goals and a passion to represent
Tunisia and Africa to the best of
his ability.
"The Olympic Games in
Rio are very important for me
because I have become a much
more experienced athlete since
the London Olympic Games,"
said Mrabet.
"This is my chance to make
my country and Africa proud!"
he added.
Mrabet sealed his place at the
Rio showcase with an emphatic
win in the K1 1000m men's
A-final at the African Championships
at Shongweni Dam, South
Africa where he retained his continental
crown. His joy at winning
gold thinly disguised his
elation at confirming his place
in the Tunisian team for the Rio
Games.
Since his arrival on the international
competitive sprinting
stage Mrabet has accumulated a
loyal following of fans, not only
in his home country but across
the world and is also a talisman
for the rapidly improving Tunisian
national team.
It all started in 2002 when
Mrabet, as an enthusiastic 12
year-old sailor, became fascinated
by kayakers training at his
harbour town.
"The canoe club was next
to my sailing club and I started
watching the kayakers with interest
until one day I decided to
give it a try," said Mrabet. "From
that day on I have never looked
back!"
Apart from the pleasure
involved in mastering the sport,
Mrabet was gripped by the competitive
element and saw opportunities
to test himself against
the best.
A year later he was the Tunisian
K1 champion and set his
sights higher. By 2005 he had
won the African continental title
and in 2007 added the Arabic
title to his CV.
"Then I decided to try and
beat the best athlete in the
world," says Mrabet.
In his early days he unashamedly
looked up to Australian star,
Kenny Wallace and set out to try
and emulate his hero.
"I am highly competitive,"
added Mrabet. "I am the sort of
person that hates losing, so from
that very first day I was always
training to win."
Mrabet has enjoyed encouragement
and support from many
tiers of the sport globally and has
been able to share training camps
with other international federations
and coaches while the
International Canoe Federation
has backed his emergence for
many years.
Last month the ICF facilitated
the provision of a state-of-the-art
Nelo K1 for Mrabet to race at the
Rio Olympics.
Off the water Mrabet has
immersed himself in a life of
sport, studying sport education
to the point of being appointed a
professor of physical education
in 2013.
In between his paddling training
for Rio, Mrabet, who comes
from a large family with an older
brother and two sisters, fuels his
competitive urges by cycling and
racing triathlons.

Life-changing few months
for KZN’s Schoeman
Durban – In an Olympic year the
calibre of nominees for the
KwaZulu-Natal Sportsman of
the Year is often at its fi nest
and for Olympic bronze medallist
and rising triathlon star Henri Schoeman,
who has played runner-up to Chad le
Clos and Hank McGregor in the past, fi nally
claiming the prestigious award in 2016 was
a dream come true.
Having missed out on the
KZN Sportsman of the Year
award in the past few years, Schoeman
was overwhelmed when
he was awarded the honour at a
glitzy ceremony recently however
the young star knows that
the award is only the start of bigger
things.
“It is an incredible honour to
be awarded the Sportsman of
the Year award after a couple
years of being a nominee and it
is even more special because it is
something that I have wanted to
achieve for a few years.
“I want to thank the KZN
Department of Sport and Recreation
for the accolade and I want
this to be another boost for me
to move onto bigger and better
things in triathlon.
“This award has just ticked
another box,” a satisfied Schoeman
added.
The meteoric rise of the young
triathlon talent came as a surprise
to many as he powered his way
to bronze at the recent Olympic
Games in Rio de Janeiro however
the 25 year old felt that he
was peaking at the right time
heading into the Games and
knew that he was in line for a
strong performance.
“I believed that I was going to
produce something special at the
Olympic Games this year even
though I knew getting a medal
was going to be tough,” Schoeman
said.
“Very few people expected
me to medal at the event and that
was an added incentive.
“I wanted to try and inspire
people and help them realise that
you don’t have to be one of the
favourites to perform well.”
Schoeman followed up his
impressive bronze medal with
his maiden win on the ITU
World Series circuit when he
beat the more fancied Brownlee
brothers from Britain for a
first World Series victory of his
career. These two results have
catapulted Schoeman into the
limelight but have also given him
a significant boost going into the
next season.
“My win in Mexico has gone
a long way in giving me the confidence
that I need going into
next season.
“My motivation levels have
always been there but now I
am even more determined to do
well and become the best runner
on the circuit; I feel that I don’t
have to prove myself anymore.
“I am ready for bigger challenges,”
he added.
Schoeman’s work schedule
has been jam-packed up until
recently and a well-earned break
is currently the order of the day
for him.
However, with the momentum
that he has gained over the past
few months, he won’t be spending
too much time away from
training.
“I have taken a few weeks
off after Mexico but I am slowly
starting to get back into it as I
want to give KZN track champs
a go this year in the 5000m and
10 000m so I am slowly working
towards that.
“There is a UTI World Cup
event in Cape Town in February
which will be a target for me
but the season really begins in
March and I am really looking
forward to it,” an excited Schoeman
added.
The KwaZulu-Natal Sport
It was a clean sweep of major awards for the EADP as Jean van der Westhuysen
snapped up the Junior Sportsman of the Year award at the recent
KwaZulu-Natal Sports Awards. Balint Vekkasy/
Gameplan Media
Awards was dominated by athletes
from the Elite Athlete
Development Programme as
canoeing ace Bridgitte Hartley
was awarded the KZN Sportswoman
of the Year award, whilst
fellow canoeing star Jean van der
Westhuysen snapped up the Junior
Sportsman of the Year award
and rising judo talent Jasmine
Martin won the Junior Sportswoman
of the Year award.
Paddler Banetse Nkhoesa was
acknowledged with an award for
bravery following a devastating
stabbing incident late in 2015
that threatened to not curtail his
FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon goals
but his life as well.
Determination and hard work
saw him and partner Sbonelo
Khwela finish the race in an
incredible third overall though.
