The perfect caramelised carrots 

to accompany any roast - try them 

alongside your Christmas turkey 

INGREDIENTS 

500g carrot, peeled and cut into long 

chunks 50g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 

8 red onions, peeled and quartered 

with root intact 3 sprigs thyme 

1 tbsp soft brown sugar 3 tbsp red wine 

1 tbsp good-quality balsamic vinegar 

METHOD 

Blanch carrots in a pan of boiling salted 

water for 3 mins, drain well, then pat dry. 

In a large pan, melt the butter and oil, 

then fry the carrots, onions and thyme 

over a low heat for 30 mins until golden. 

Stir in the sugar and red wine and bubble 

for a few mins to boil off the alcohol. Add 

the vinegar, then continue to cook until 

syrupy, about 5 mins. Remove the sprigs 

of thyme and serve. Make up to 2 days 

ahead, stored in a covered container. 

Tip back into a pan and reheat or use a 

microwave. 

Low-fat roasties 

Prep: 10 Mins cook: 1 hr Easy Serves: 2

INGREDIENTS 

800g roasting 

potatoes, quartered 

1 garlic clove, sliced 

200ml vegetable stock

METHOD 

Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas

INGREDIENTS 

140g small button mushroom, 

sliced 50g butter 

, plus extra for greasing 

25g plain flour 325ml milk 

85g Gruyère, finely grated, plus 

a little extra 3 large eggs , separated 

6 tsp crème fraîche 

snipped chive, to serve 

METHOD 

Fry the mushrooms in the butter 

for about 3 mins, then remove 

from the heat and reserve a 

good spoonful. Add the flour to 

the rest, then blend in the milk 

and return to the heat, stirring 

all the time to make a thick 

sauce. Stir in the cheese, season 

to taste, then leave to cool. 

Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas

and line the bases with baking 

paper. Stir the egg yolks into 

the soufflé mixture, then whisk 

the egg whites until stiff before 

folding in carefully. 

Spoon into the soufflé dishes

mins until risen and golden. 

Leave to cool (they will sink, 

but they are meant to). You can 

make the soufflés up to this 

stage up to 2 days ahead. Cover 

and chill. 

When ready to serve, turn the 

soufflés out of their dishes, peel 

off the lining paper, then put 

them on a baking sheet lined 

with small squares of baking

Heat a large saucepan and aside. Add the oil, carrot, lentils,

stock and milk to the pan

oil toasted pitta bread 

200g tub tomato salsa, to serve

METHOD 

Pat the chickpeas dry with kitchen 

paper. Tip into a food processor 

along with the onion, garlic, parsley, 

spices, flour and a little salt. 

Blend until fairly smooth, then 

shape into four patties with your 

hands. 

Heat the oil in a non-stick frying 

pan, add the burgers, then quickly 

fry for 3 mins on each side until 

lightly golden. Serve with toasted 

pittas, tomato salsa and a green 

salad.

INGREDIENTS 

75g dark chocolate 70% grated 

4 tbsp low-fat yogurt 

2 large egg whites 

2 tsp caster sugar 

350g berries (try blueberries, 

raspberries, cherries or a mix) 

METHOD 

Melt the chocolate in a heatproof 

bowl over a pan of simmering 

water, making sure the bowl 

doesn’t directly touch the water. 

Once melted, allow it to cool for 

5-10 mins, then stir in the yogurt. 

Whisk the egg whites until stiff, 

then whisk in the sugar and beat 

until stiff again. Fold the whites 

into the chocolate mix – loosen 

the mixture first with a spoonful 

of egg white, then carefully fold 

in the rest, keeping as much air as 

possible. 

Put berries into small glasses or 

ramekins, then divide mousse on 

top. Chill in the fridge until set.

by the texture

conversations, where a 

character’s face will go from 

looking like a blurry mess to 

having visible pores midway 

through a sentence. 

On that note, Mass Effect: 

Andromeda is more than a 

little rough in the technical 

sense. On PlayStation 

4 and Xbox One (I’ve yet to 

spend significant time with 

the PC version), it’s prone to 

major frame rate drops and 

hitches regardless of what’s 

happening on screen. I’ve 

seen it drop to slideshow 

levels when simply walking 

around the Nexus (the 

Citadel-like seat of government), 

driving through a flat 

wasteland, and fighting in 

a dense jungle. Animation 

glitches seem more common 

than in previous games. And, 

though some bugs are to be 

expected in a game of this 

scale, between myself and 

a few other players at IGN 

we’ve seen a fair share of 

broken quests. (BioWare has 

been aggressively issuing 

patches in response to our 

reports and claims to have 

resolved at least some of the 

problems already.)

the ways you interact with 

that world feel incredibly 

trite and tired. 

It's not immediately 

apparent at first how stockstandard 

the game's interactivity 

is on account of the 

grandness and complexity 

of its map. Wildlands borrows 

the landscape and 

architecture of Bolivia, one 

of the most naturally varied 

and lush places on Earth. 

Each province of the game 

feels huge and aesthetically 

distinct. Even when 

viewed from above, you see 

a cohesive whole where climate 

and elevation dictate 

the landscape more than a 

deliberate theme. 

You play one member of 

a team of four special forces 

soldiers tasked with bringing 

down the Santa Blanca 

drug cartel, a Mexican drugrunning 

operation that has 

taken over the whole country 

to create a religiously motivated 

narco-state. At the top 

is El Sueno — the mastermind. 

He has four heads of 

operation, who each have 

an underboss. Under them 

are the regional bosses, the 

Buchons. The Buchons set 

the thematic tone for a province 

and must have their 

entire criminal infrastructure 

dismantled piece by 

piece. 

The contrast between the 

visual details of the game 

and the thematic construction 

is impressive and vexing. 

Visually, it's a masterwork. 

During a rainstorm, 

light will pierce the clouds 

and dapple the distant hills 

with sunlight while a grey, 

oppressive sky colors the 

world around you up close. 

After the rain, water pools 

along the dirt road inside the 

tire tracks and footprints, 

little puddles with so many 

variations it's hard to tell if 

it's from template or if each 

kilometer is totally handcrafted. 

Wind from a helicopter's

grasses and shake trees. Little 

churches on the hillsides 

look like they've been there 

for decades, a perfect mix of 

care and neglect. 

Thematically, however, it's 

all murder and condescension. 

You are four against a 

nation. Never for a moment 

does your squad consider 

that to be an unreasonable 

task. Not once in the 

many (many) hours of the 

campaign is there a single 

moment of humility. Because 

Santa Blanca are also foreigners, 

for the most part, 

there is no attempt to engage 

with actual Bolivian culture, 

no point of interaction that 

isn't driven by mechanical 

violence. 

In a game with an entirely 

fictional backdrop, that 

wouldn't be so much of a 

problem. But Wildlands 

takes the time to render its 

version of Bolivia with so 

much environmental fidelity, 

including geographical 

features and architectural 

motifs. Since Wildlands 

clearly put thought and care 

into making its map feel like 

Bolivia, the absolute carelessness 

of tone frustrated 

and confused me. 

All of this content can be 

played in any order whatsoever. 

You can drive straight 

from your starting region 

to the most difficult and 

remote province of the game 

without even finishing the 

tutorials. There is a dizzying 

variety of weapons and 

vehicles, all based on reallife 

counterparts and easily 

identifiable. With so many 

toys and tools and such a 

huge world to utilize them 

in, the possibilities for completing 

any given mission 

are open-ended to the point 

of absurdity. 

Ubisoft 

One particular mission 

highlighted Wildland’s moral 

flippancy. I was tasked with 

killing one of Santa Blanca's 

priest figures, who was 

preaching in a church populated 

by two dozen heavily 

armed soldiers. I flew an 

explosive drone right up the 

main aisle and blew it up; 

no one knew what hit them. 

At first I thought, "I'm pretty 

smart for using a drone 

here." Then I realized: "Holy 

shit, I just used a drone to 

massacre people at church." 

There’s a fine tonal line 

to walk in a video game 

about revolution and liberation, 

but erring on the side 

of goofball nonsense can toe 

that line. Wildlands, however, 

has a lot invested in 

feeling contemporary and 

grounded in the real world. 

The real places, the real 

equipment and the desire to 

feel edgy and contemporary 

come back around to really 

bite it in the ass when you 

inevitably do things that are 

kinda-sorta war crimes if 

you're suspending disbelief.

Iron Fist’s questionable fight scenes 

have fans asking how it got so bad 

Iron Fist is no stranger 

to controversy, 

and the latest aspect 

of the show fans have 

taken issue with are 

the fight scenes. 

Or rather, one scene 

in particular. In this one 

35-second scene, there are 

more than 50 cuts. The scene 

has been ripped apart by 

that they wanted to do it in 

one shot and slow down the 

actual scene to create a raw, 

animalistic feeling. The hallway 

scene, as it’s become 

known by fans of the series, 

was the first introduction 

to what Marvel and Netflix 

could do. 

It didn’t stop there, 

though. Jessica Jones was 

personality actually helped 

define what she would be 

doing, which was great. Just 

literally using her super 

strength to throw people and 

kicking guys between the 

legs.” 

Iron Fist’s fight scenes 

don’t have the style or grace 

that the scenes in Jessica 

Jones and Daredevil do. The 

routines. 

“Unfortunately, with the 

filming schedule, I wasn’t 

given as much time as I 

would have liked to continue 

the training,” Jones said. 

“I was learning those fight 

scenes just 15 minutes before 

we shot them, because that 

was the schedule ... It would 

be 2 am, 3 am, I’d just done 

fans and critics for the lackluster 

fight choreography 

between two characters, but 

it’s not just this scene where 

Danny Rand’s martial arts 

aren’t up to par. 

Rand’s movements are 

slower and choppier than his 

other Marvel counterparts 

— specifically Daredevil 

and Jessica Jones — who 

were able to perform similar 

action scenes looking less 

awkward while doing it. 

One of the most memorable 

fight scenes in Daredevil 

occurs in its first season. 

The shot is done in a single 

take and features Daredevil 

taking on a number of men 

in a dimly lit hallway. 

Daredevil’s stunt coordinator, 

Philip J. Silvera, told 

The Observer back in 2015 

also lauded for its fight 

scenes. One of the show’s 

earliest fights take place in 

Luke Cage’s bar and stunt 

coordinator Chris Place said 

they spent a lot of time figuring 

out how to introduce 

the characters in that scene. 

Place said they spent time 

with lead actress Krysten 

Ritter to ensure the fight 

choreography they were 

coming up with matched the 

tone of the actress and the 

character. 

“Jessica doesn’t have a 

fight style,” Place told TV 

Insider. “She doesn’t throw 

moves or block any punches, 

so it’s a lot of pushing and 

shoving and throwing people 

across the room. 

Krysten basically would 

be Jessica Jones to a T. Her 

poor martial arts in Iron 

Fist — ironic considering 

the entire series is about a 

kung-fu expert — have actually 

become the latest round 

of jokes surrounding the 

series. It’s even led to the 

latest meme, which takes 

inspiration from an episode 

of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia 

where Mac wants to 

be a jiu-jitsu expert. 

The question is why Iron 

Fist’s fight scenes are as 

slow-paced, boring and 

problematic as they are. Finn 

Jones, who plays the titular 

hero, said a large part of 

it came from not having the 

proper time to practice. In 

an interview with The Telegraph, 

Jones said if he had 

more time, he would have 

been able to pull off better 

a long day of work, and usually 

the stunt department 

would come up and say ‘Hey, 

right, we’ve got this huge 30 

person fight and you’ve got 

to learn it right now.’ So I 

was learning it on the spot, 

within 15-20 minutes, and 

then shooting it. 

That was the reality for six 

months.” 

Unlike Jones, however, 

fight scenes starring other 

actors in the show, like Jessica 

Henwick, have been 

praised. 

Henwick’s scene where 

she fights a couple of men 

during a cage match, for 

example, has received 

acclaim from critics and 

fans, many of whom have 

called the moment the best 

fight scene in the series.

Apple Unveils Budget-Friendly 

iPad, Dresses iPhone in Red 

Apple on Tuesday 

announced 

an iPad update, 

a red iPhone 7 

and 7 Plus, and 

a new video-editing app for 

iOS. 

The iPad upgrade has a 

9.7-inch, 2048 x 1536-pixel 

Retina display with 264 pixels 

per inch, and Apple's A9 

64-bit processor. 

The unit will come in silver, 

gold and space gray with 

a starting price of US$329 for 

32 gigabytes of storage and 

WiFi-only support. It will 

cost $459 for a 32-GB unit 

with WiFi and cellular support. 

As with prior models, the 

battery life for the new iPad 

is 10 hours. It has an 8-megapixel 

rear-facing camera 

and 1.2-MP front-facing 

FaceTime unit. 

The new iPad is available 

for order on Mach 24 from 

Apple's website and will be 

in Apple Stores next week. 

With the latest upgrade, 

Apple's iPad lineup looks 

like this: iPad Pro 12.9 inch 

($799); iPad Pro 9.7 inch 

($599); iPad 9.7 inch ($329) 

and iPad mini 4 ($399). 

Not Quite an Air 

Replacement 

Although the latest iPad 

replaces the iPad Air 2 in 

Apple's tablet lineup, it 

doesn't quite supplant it. 

"It falls somewhere 

between a new device and 

the old device," said Carolina 

Milanesi, a principal analyst 

at Creative Strategies. 

"They upgraded the most 

important thing on the 

device -- the processor," she 

told TechNewsWorld. "Not 

only will the performance 

be better, but other components, 

like the camera, will 

be snappier." 

Pricing is also an outstanding 

feature of the new 

iPad, Milanesi said, noting 

that "$329 for a 9.7-inch 

device is very aggressive." 

Prying Old iPads from 

Users' Paws 

Attractive pricing may 

tempt some iPad owners to 

upgrade their old hardware. 

"The replacement cycle 

for iPads is getting really 

long," said Mikako Kitagawa, 

a principal research analyst 

with Gartner. "If you have a 

3- or 4-year-old iPad, you 

may want this upgrade." 

The pricing also could 

attract some new users into 

the Apple universe. 

"They're going to stretch 

the iPad's market into the 

mid-range tablet market," 

Kitagawa told TechNews- 

World. 

Competitive pressure also 

may play a role in Apple's 

new entry-level tablet pricing. 

"It's an interesting strategic 

move for Apple," said 

Rhoda Alexander, director 

of tablet and notebook 

research at IHS Markit. 

"They've held that $499

9.7 for seven years now," she

price is way above the competition,

Facebook Gets Tough on Spy Apps 

Facebook on 

Monday moved 

to prevent spy 

applications 

from accessing 

its users' data. 

The company has updated 

its Facebook and Instagram 

policies to prohibit developers 

from using data obtained 

from those platforms in surveillance 

tools, according to 

Rob Sherman, deputy chief 

privacy officer at Facebook. 

Facebook already has 

taken enforcement actions 

against devs who created 

and marketed surveillance 

tools in violation of the company's 

previous policy, he 

noted, adding that "we want 

to be sure everyone understands 

the underlying policy 

and how to comply." 

Facebook has been under 

pressure to beef up its rules 

governing surveillance 

apps since last fall, when 

the American Civil Liberties 

Union released a report 

exposing how Geofeedia was 

using Facebook, Instagram 

and Twitter data to track 

protesters in Baltimore and 

Ferguson, Missouri. 

Marketing materials 

for surveillance companies 

urged police to monitor 

hashtags associated 

with Black Lives Matter, and 

labeled unions and activist 

groups as "overt threats," the 

ACLU also reported. 

"We depend on social networks 

to connect and communicate 

about the most 

important issues in our lives 

and the core political and 

social issues in our country," 

said Nicole Ozer, technology 

and civil Liberties director at 

the ACLU of California. 

"Now more than ever, we 

expect companies to slam 

shut any surveillance side 

doors and make sure nobody 

can use their platforms to 

target people of color and 

activists," she added. 

Data Sellers Chill Dissent 

The ACLU is part of a 

coalition that includes the 


Center for Media Justice 

and the Color of Change. 

The group aims to persuade 

social media companies to 

establish robust systems to 

make sure the rules prohibiting 

surveillance are followed. 

"When technology companies 

allow their platforms 

and devices to be used to 

conduct mass surveillance 

of activists and other targeted 

communities, it chills 

democratic dissent and gives 

authoritarianism a license 

to thrive," said Malkia Cyril, 

executive director of the 

Center for Media Justice. 

"Social media platforms 

are a powerful tool for black 

people to draw attention to 

the injustices our community 

faces," remarked Brandi 

Collins, campaign director 

for Color of Change. 

"We commend Facebook 

and Instagram for this step," 

she continued, "and call on 

all companies who claim to 

value diversity and justice to 

also stand up and do what's 

needed to limit invasive 

social media surveillance 

from being used to target 

black and brown people in 

low-income communities." 

All Facebook users will 

benefit from the crackdown 

on surveillance apps, said 

Andrew Sudbury, CTO of 

Abine. 

"This should improve user 

privacy, as there shouldn't be 

any commercial companies 

reselling access to them and 

their data to law enforcement 

for tracking and intelligence 

gathering purposes," 

he told TechNewsWorld. 

Mixed Bag for Cops 

For law enforcement 

agencies using information 

from developers of surveillance 

apps, Facebook's policy 

will be a mixed bag. 

"There's nothing to stop 

law enforcement from looking 

as a suspect's Facebook 

feed, but it will stop these 

intermediary-type companies 

like Geofeedia from 

getting automated feeds of 

information," said Timothy 

Toohey, an attorney with 

Greenberg Glusker Fields 

Claman & Machtinger. 

Enforcement still could 

be a problem for Facebook, 

though. 

"There may be other companies 

that have ways to 

scrape this information from 

Facebook without developer 

access," Toohey told Tech- 

NewsWorld. 

Facebook's ability and 

willingness to police its 

antisurveillance policy will 

be key to its success. 

"A company could simply 

do its surveillance anyway," 

Abine's Sudbury noted. 

"Then it would fall on Facebook 

to carefully monitor 

what and how developers 

access data, looking for 

clues as to the purposes of 

the data." 

Controversies over what's 

done with Facebook's data 

are unavoidable, Toohey 

maintained. 

"The data is incredibly 

valuable. It's valuable to law 

enforcement. It's valuable to 

private enterprises," he said. 

"Facebook wants to monetize 

that, which puts them in 

very difficult positions balancing 

their commercial 

interests with other interests."

SA 100km record in stunning 

World Champs silver charge

seen as the 

highlight of 

ultra-distance 

running in South Africa 

for 2016, the Elite Athlete 

Development Programme’s 

Bongmusa Mthembu along 

with fellow South Africans 

Gift Khelele, David Gatebe 

and Rufus Photo were the 

strongest overall team at 

the recent IAU 100km World 

Championships in Spain last 

week. Mthembu, who won 

the Comrades Marathon in 

2014, was the strongest of 

the South African runners 

when he finished in a stellar 

second place overall behind 

Japan’s Hideaki Yamauchi, 

breaking the South African 

100km record set by legend 

Bruce Fordyce in 1999 in the 

process. 

Mthembu has been in 

good form throughout 2016, 

collecting a third place finish 

at the Comrades Marathon 

along the way. The 33 yearold 

knew that 100km was 

going to be a completely different 

challenge though but 

was surprised by his performance. 

“It was the first time I 

had ever ran that distance 

so I really didn’t know what 

to expect from the race,” 

Mthembu said on his return 

to South Africa. 

“To be able to come second 

was incredible, but I 

think that the most important 

thing was that we were 

able to win the overall team 

title. 

“We worked well together 

and although we had some 

problems, I knew that the 

team was going to be strong 

and it’s an amazing time for

For Mthembu, the pressure 

of taking on an 

unknown distance was made 

easier by having a strong 

team of runners around 

him as he went beyond the 

87km distance of the familiar 

Comrades Marathon while 

was also confident he was 

going to be strong enough 

when he pushed into the 

unknown. 

“The extra 10km did make 

a big difference, but I knew 

that I had trained enough to 

deal with it even though it 

was foreign to me. 

“The training wasn’t too 

different to that of our Comrades 

training but I learnt a 

huge amount about my ability 

and I hope that I will 

get the chance to run the 

race again in 2017 to see if I 

can push for a gold medal,” 

Mthembu mentioned excitedly. 

Mthembu was only the 

second South African to finish 

on the podium after Cornet 

Mathomane finished 

third in 1993. Despite his 

achievement on the international 

stage, the Bulwer resident’s 

focus remains on the 

2017 Comrades Marathon ‘up 

run’ from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. 

“With a win and 

then a good performance in 

the down run this year I am 

really looking forward to the 

Comrades Marathon next 

year. 

“I have got the desire to 

win back the title and I think 

that I have the confidence, 

so if I can stay fit and healthy 

then I think that I will have 

a good chance to win the 

Comrades again!”

2016 was another stellar year for judo whizkid Jasmine Martin who finished with 

a gold medal at the Region 5 Games in Angola, but the 16-year-old is focused on 

improving in 2017.

a vital role in 

the significant medal contribution 

that her code delivered 

for Team South Africa 

at the AUSC Region 5 Games 

in Luanda, Angola that 

featured teams from around 

Southern Africa boosting her 

drive to realise her Olympic 

dream. 

The 16 year judoka has 

been making waves throughout 

the continent recently 

as she continues to grow 

and push towards eventually 

representing South Africa at 

the Olympic Games, however 

despite having a suc- 

cessful 2016 she under- 

stands that there is a 

tough road ahead of 

her. 

“I was really happy 

with how everything 

went in 2016,” the 

Queensburgh resi- 

dent said. 

“I won a lot 

of medals and 

finished the 

year being 

ranked inside 

the 

top 20 in 

the world which 

was a 

huge pos- 

itive, but I know 

that I have to move 

up a weight cate- 

gory into my Olympic 

weight category which 

means the girls are big- 

ger and stronger. 

“It is going to be 

really hard 

but I am 

really looking for- 

ward to the challenge 

that the next stage of 

my career is going to 

pose,” a down-to- 

earth Martin added. 

Following a long 

2016 Martin’s motivation 

was at an all-time high when 

she took part in the Zone 5 

Games in Angola’s capital 

Luanda and with her victory 

in her weight category she 

became the first South African 

women to earn a gold 

medal at the games. 

“It was great to finish the 

year off with a gold medal 

at the Region 5 Games and 

it really just motivates me 

to carry on performing well 

and working hard,” she continued. 

Martin mentioned early in 

2016 that her aim is to win a 

medal at the 2020 Olympic 

Games in Tokyo, as well as 

giving her parents a medal 

in her home town’s Commonwealth 

Games in 2022 

however putting in the hard 

yards now is something she 

is ready to do. 

“Moving up into a different 

weight category means 

that I am going to have to get 

faster and build more mass 

to compete but I have Prime 

and the Elite Athlete Development 

Programme to help 

me along the way. 

“2017 is going to be 

another really big year for 

me as I want to win both the 

Under-18 and the Under-21 

titles at the Africa Championships 

because those count 

towards a large number of 

ranking points towards the 

World Championships. 

“The African Champs is 

the event that I am really 

looking forward to this year 

because of the amount of 

points that I can get from 

performing well. 

“It is going to be another 

big year but I am really looking 

forward to the challenge 

and hoping it will be just 

as successful as 2016,” an 

upbeat Martin commented.

training when I am at 

Prime,”

Meyer has 

competed at an Olympic 

Games and has now won 

the coveted aQuellé Midmar 

Mile title, a dream that he 

has had on his mind following 

two close second place 

finishes. 

The former Clifton College 

student, who represented 

South Africa at the 

Rio Olympic Games in the 

1500m freestyle, said that 

the Midmar event was not 

his main focus, but the conditioning 

and training he 

received from the Elite Athlete 

Development Programme 

had left him well 

prepared for the race. 

He was up against one 

of the legends of the Midmar 

Mile, Chad Ho, who has 

won seven in a row, so to get 

one over the favourite was 

a dream come true for the 

youngster. 

“I have come second twice 

in the last two years so to 

finally get the overall win is 

beyond my wildest dreams!” 

Meyer said. 

“It was a goal of mine to 

beat Chad and I knew that it 

was going to be an incredibly 

tough race with a bit of a 

chop which didn’t suit me as 

much as Chad. 

“I am a pool swimmer so 

to come and take on conditions 

like that was tough 

but I am delighted that I was 

able to manage the conditions 

and hold off Chad right 

at the end of the race. 

“I would have loved some 

flatter conditions but I cannot 

complain!” he mentioned. 

Despite his prowess in the 

pool, Meyer’s power in open 

water was on full display at 

Midmar Dam as he had to 

negotiate a fierce charge 

from Ho right from the gun. 

“Chad went really hard 

from the start which made 

the race a little more difficult 

for me and I knew that I had 

to hold on for the first 800m. 

“When I had managed 

to stay with him I felt that 

there was going to be a good 

chance that I could take him 

right at the end sprint. 

“When I managed to get 

out of the water first and 

across the line it was an 

incredible feeling. I had just 

beaten one of the legends of 

the Midmar Mile!” he added. 

The former Clifton College 

student does not put too 

much emphasis on the Midmar 

Mile each year with his 

pool swimming career being 

his main focus but getting 

back into the dam and taking 

on the iconic race is something 

he enjoys. 

“I just take the Midmar 

Mile as it comes, I don’t do 

anything specific to prepare 

for it. 

“It just so happened that 

I was able to get a break in 

my training and pool racing 

to do it. 

“The Grand Prix series 

is my main focus at the 

moment as I build up 

towards the World Championships 

in Budapest later in 

the year. 

“That’s the main goal for 

me this year and having the 

guys and facilities at Prime 

to help me has been an 

incredible help.

The race was always going 

to draw the hardcore mountain 

runners with the 100km 

event being a qualifier for 

the prestigious Ultra-Trail® 

Mont Blanc and the Giants 

Cup Uncut and the Sundowner 

Run providing a 

variety of options for runners. 

"The Drakensberg Rockjumper 

(DRJ) is a two day 

trail run with distances of 

approximately 15km each 

day. It is an ideal event for 

those just getting into trail 

running or runners keen on 

the shorter distances," race 

organiser Spurgeon Flemington 

said. 

"Based at the Sani Pass 

Hotel and with a clover 

leaf format runners will be 

blown away by one of the 

most idyllic short course 

layouts on the Trail Running 

calendar. 

"Predominantly in the 

Maloti Drakensberg Park 

runners will touch on sections 

of the legendary 

Giant’s Cup, Gxalingenwa 

and Khanti Ridge trails and 

experience genuine mountain 

trail running in its purest 

form." 

The two day event will 

give the runners the chance 

to take in some spectacular 

views as well with the start 

of each day being at the Sani 

Pass Hotel. The two days are 

characterized by some early 

climbs, a plateau and them 

some long descents to the 

finish, the Sani Pass Hotel. 

“On day one runners will 

head up towards the Khanti 

ridgeline via the well-known 

trail up to Salt & Pepper 

Rocks. 

“The route then follows 

a short section along the 

Khanti Ridge before joining 

a section of the UTD 100 

course and descending back 

down to the Hotel while 

passing Balancing Rocks and 

Nelson’s Column. 

“The second day of the 

run starts on the Sani Pass 

Hotel golf course and follows 

the magnificent Gxalingenwa 

Trail up the gorge 

and passes the waterfall 

before joining the Giant’s 

Cup Trail at Ngenwa Pool. 

“From the pool it follows 

the Giant’s Cup Trail 

for a few km before turning 

off onto the Stromness Trail 

and descending down the 

Stromness ridge back to the 

Hotel,” Flemington added. 

As with all Running Man 

Adventures events a significant 

portion of each entry 

will be donated to Ezemvelo
