when hiring professional contractors
As we begin to crawl out of the
gaps of a shaken economy, many
are still looking for work wherever

Most people know they
need to clean out their dryer
lint tray between each cycle,
but what lurks behind
the wall is just as important
for safety and avoiding fire
traps, as well as fully efficient
dryer performance.
Joe Enzenberger, owner of
Dryer Vent Wizard, opened
his New Lenox business in
2009.
Lint that has been allowed
to build up and linger too
long in the dryer exhaust
vent is the villain. It is estimated
by the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission
and the U.S. Fire Administration
that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers
occur annually.
These fires account for an
average of 20 deaths, 370
injuries and more than $88
million in property damage.
“Failure to clean the dryer
vent” was the leading factor
cited in U.S. Fire Administration
reports.
“It is something very few
people know about or think
about,” Enzenberger, whose
company specializes in
dryer vent cleaning, repair,
alteration and installation,
said. “It is the leading cause
of dryer fires.”
Lint accumulation can also
cause dryers to stop working
or to work inefficiently. A
dryer vent clogged with lint
can add as much as $18-$24
per month to energy costs.
“Improper venting causes
problems, as well,” Enzenberger
said. “The dryer exhaust
duct and connections
should be made of rigid
metal, or semi-rigid metal
and secured with metal heatresistant
tape rather than
duct tape. I often find plastic
or foil accordion-type material,
which can easily trap
lint and is more susceptible
to kinks and crushing.”
Warning signs include:
• Clothes are taking more
than one cycle to dry, especially
jeans and towels.
• No lint visible on lint
screen.
• Dryer repeatedly stops during
a cycle.
• Clothes have moldy smell
after dry cycle.
• Clothes are very hot after a
dry cycle.
• The top of your dryer is
hot to the touch while running.
• There is excess lint left on
your clothing.
“This has been a consumer
education process, but it’s
hard to get the word out,” Enzenberger
said. “Most don’t
call until they have a serious
problem with their dryer.”
Enzenberger suggests
people treat clothes dryers as
a household item in need of
regular maintenance. Consumers
can protect dryer
performance and promote
safety by cleaning the lint
screen between each use,
ensuring the connection between
the dryer and wall is
made of compliant material
and remains unkinked, and
having the dryer exhaust
duct cleaned regularly.
Dryer manufacturers recommend
inspection and
cleaning at least annually.
As something to watch for
in spring, birds will begin to
build nests, and a popular
nesting site for birds is inside
dryer vent lines. Spring
is an important time to have
an inspection and cleaning
of clothes dryers and dryer
vent systems.
Another important tip is to
never let your clothes dryer
run when you are out of the
house or asleep.

often-arduous task of spring cleaning,
many could use assistance on
how to best tidy up their belongings.
Professional organizers exist to
shed light on the cleaning and organizing
process, helping to tackle
messes one at a time until the home
is refreshed and efficient.
Patty Wolf is a certified professional
organizer specializing in
chronic disorganization who is also
the owner and founder of Stuff-
Busters, located in LaGrange. The
business serves Chicago and its
surrounding south suburbs, including
Orland Park and Tinley Park.
As an organizer, Wolf said the
biggest overall thing is to remember
that while no two jobs or
homes are the same, one of her biggest
overarching pointers is to store
like items with one another.
“It’s like an organizing rule,”
Wolf said. “It makes everything
easier to go to one place and get
what you’re looking for.”
One particular area that gets
cluttered and unorganized is closet
space, Wolf said. To stay organized
with a closet and potentially eliminate
items, Wolf recommends doing
the “hanger trick” of placing
all hangers backwards. After six
months, if the individual still has
not worn the clothes, remaining
backwards hangers are an indicator
it may be time to part with them.
“You want jackets together,
pants together, shirts together,”
Wolf continued. “If you want to
get detailed, you organize by color.
You need to go through every single
thing you own, and don’t leave
any stone unturned.

The Granite and Marble Depot is one of

the same. Fabrication and installation are
greatly affected by the technology and techniques
utilized by the individual fabricator.

When granite is delivered into the facility,
it is quality inspected by Granite and Marble
Depot technicians. Once the slabs arrive
and pass rigorous inspection, professional

viewing their slabs and going over the cuts,
seam location and final verification of design

in the process every step of the way to

and technical details are provided.
The last and final step is the installation.
The homeowner must be present for installation.

Lastly, GMD will drill the faucet holes, attach

Flowers & Gifts, shared
her gardening tips based on
what she likes to do in her
own garden when the dreary
winter months come to a
close.
“Spend the extra money to
buy plants that are heartier,”
McAuliffe said. “They will
last a lot longer so it’s worth
it.”
The first flowers she noted
were hydrangeas, hearty
plants that blooms faster.
They are partial to a shady
area of the garden and prefer
to be watered at least once if
not twice a day, McAuliffe
said.
“The best part is you can
cut the blooms and bring
them inside,” McAuliffe
said.
It is also nice to have flowers
that come back year after
year like salvia or calla lilies.
McAuliffe said that these
bud plants multiply underground
so that more come
back each year.
“The only problem with
lilies is that they are toxic to
animals [if eaten],” McAuliffe
said. “So keep them
away from pets.”

“Also, focus on seasonal. For springtime,
take winter clothing out of the closet and
store it elsewhere, maybe in a different room
or plastic bins under the bed.”
For the bedroom or any other room as a
whole, Wolf tends to focus on her “like with
like” rule for cleaning out drawers, and she
added that organization is important to a person’s
frame of mind.
“A lot of clients, as well as myself, say
that when a room is messy, they can’t get
anything done,” Wolf said. “It’s distracting.
When organized and simplified, you can be
most productive and feel relief and in better
control.”
For tackling a more unique area like the
garage, Wolf said the biggest key is to not let
the garage become so filled that a car cannot
be parked in there, which she sees from some
of her clients.
Instead, using things like a vertical wall
system with hooks for items like bigger tools
or lawn equipment can keep things efficient
and maximize space, she said.
Wolf also advised that ideally, a garage will
not require shelving, but realistically, most
people need at least some shelving there to
store belongings. In that case, she said to use
shelving but keep it to a minimum and use
clear containers or bags so items can easily
be found later, whether by the individual doing
the cleaning or someone else.
“People bring new things in, and they forget
to let old things go,” Wolf said. “I like
to use the example of an ocean current. It
comes in, and it also goes out.
“When you bring in a new bike, it’s the
perfect time to let the old bike flow out. It’s
time to give the old things to someone else so
they can use them.”
Wolf said the home is “valuable real estate”
and that the hardest part isn’t cleaning
and organizing but staying organized.
“People call me [feeling] overwhelmed,”
Wolf said. “They are looking at the big picture
and not looking at little chunks. Sometimes,
the best way to tackle big projects is
one manageable chunk at a time.
“If you need help, get someone to do the
spring organizing and refreshing with you
so you’re not alone. When you work with
someone who is judgment free, they are
supporting you. You’re in control, and simplification
is the most important part of the
process to make life easier.”

But a beautiful garden is
not just made up of pretty
flowers. To liven up the
space, add ornamental objects
such as cement statues,
birdhouses or trellises.
McAuliffe said she uses
old wash tubs as makeshift
pots to hold some of her
larger plants displayed at the
front of her house.
“It’s also fun to collect
garden accessories,” McAuliffe
said. “I personally collect
cement gargoyles, but
other people collect angels.”
Accessories can also be
dressed up with flowers.
For trellises, clematis flowers
are popular, as they are
a plant that likes to climb
objects, McAulliffe said.
These plants do require both
sun and shade to survive, but
will return year after year.
