Midwest Furniture Liquidators
is the place where quality,
style and affordability meet
Our goal is to make your home look fabulous
for less.
Starting February 2016, Midwest Furniture
Liquidators opened its warehouse in
Mokena to the public every weekend only,
finally allowing homeowners to enjoy the
first look and direct price to their homes
from factories without going through the
middle-man “retail.”
We are only open three days on the weekends
(Friday, Saturday and Sunday) to reduce
cost of operation. Our prices to consumers
are significantly lower than retail.
Unlike other familiar direct sales or liquidators
in the area, customers don’t need
a membership or pay fees to get through
our large warehouse-showroom. We encourage
you to visit us frequently to check
out the new merchandise we bring weekly
to the showroom. Our business focus is to
buy right to get customers the best affordable
home furnishing needs through factory
closeouts, overstocked items and discontinued
merchandise.
After eight years of furniture experience
in supplying retail stores in the south and
southwest suburbs, we are excited to be in
Mokena serving the southwest communities
directly. The location of our warehouse was
carefully selected to be an easy access from
the Interstate 80 and LaGrange Road intersection,
on 191st Street just a few blocks east
of LaGrange Road on the north side of the
street.
We invite you to our showroom now
through May 2 to take advantage of a few
one-time special buys. Mattresses are priced
at 60-80 percent off retail.
What homeowners should consider, avoid
when hiring professional contractors
As we begin to crawl out of the
gaps of a shaken economy, many
are still looking for work wherever
they can find it.
The downside to this fact is that
many people today are hiring untrained
and under-skilled contractors
who feel that they have learned
a few things from a couple DIY
network shows and are taking jobs
as they come “just for the money.”
We have all heard the phrase
“you get what you pay for,” and
it couldn’t be more accurate when
talking about home improvements.
These contractors, or fly-by-night
companies, roll into your home and
shoot a low-ball price that you’re
eager to jump on because you’re
trying to spend with providence
— who isn’t, right? — but are unaware
that those steal-of-a-deal
prices come with a hefty drawback.
Many of these businesses fail
to carry the necessary insurance
for their trade, lack continuing
and professional education to further
their skills and do not involve
themselves with state and national
professional associations, where
industry standards are set and regulated.
So how do these factors affect
you, the homeowner?
Certified professionals in their
field have gone the extra lengths
to learn and apply knowledgeable
skills through written examinations,
showing that they understand
how to solve and correct problems,
and through hands-on demonstrations
evaluated by industry leaders.
They do this because they not only
take pride in crafting quality work,
but have an aspiration for enriching
the lives of others who benefit from
their applied skills.
Hiring a certified professional
means your project was considered
with the future in mind — a
job that has functional longevity
with products that are engineered
to last. Most projects, when comparing
work done by certified and
untrained professionals, will come
out looking similar when completed,
but the worst nightmare for any
homeowner who has just invested
a good chunk of change into their
property is to have that project start
to slowly fall apart or fail on them
after only a short time of use.
These trade workers and their
projects fail mostly because of improper
planning, lack of knowledge
in the specific details of the job and
a willingness to cut corners to save
money themselves. These factors
usually go unseen by the homeowner
and aren’t noticed until it’s
too late, resulting in more money
for a correction or a permanent reminder
of poor-quality work, if left
unfixed.
Dryer Vent
Cleaning
www.dryerventwizard.com
Don't Let Your
Dryer Start A Fire!
! WARNING !
If your dryer takes longer than one
cycle to dry your clothes, then you
may have a fire hazard in your vent.
Installation Alteration Repair
AFTER
New Lenox-based
business works to make
clothes dryers safer
Most people know they
need to clean out their dryer
lint tray between each cycle,
but what lurks behind
the wall is just as important
for safety and avoiding fire
traps, as well as fully efficient
dryer performance.
Joe Enzenberger, owner of
Dryer Vent Wizard, opened
his New Lenox business in
2009.
Lint that has been allowed
to build up and linger too
long in the dryer exhaust
vent is the villain. It is estimated
by the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission
and the U.S. Fire Administration
that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers
occur annually.
These fires account for an
average of 20 deaths, 370
injuries and more than $88
million in property damage.
“Failure to clean the dryer
vent” was the leading factor
cited in U.S. Fire Administration
reports.
“It is something very few
people know about or think
about,” Enzenberger, whose
company specializes in
dryer vent cleaning, repair,
alteration and installation,
said. “It is the leading cause
of dryer fires.”
Lint accumulation can also
cause dryers to stop working
or to work inefficiently. A
dryer vent clogged with lint
can add as much as $18-$24
per month to energy costs.
“Improper venting causes
problems, as well,” Enzenberger
said. “The dryer exhaust
duct and connections
should be made of rigid
metal, or semi-rigid metal
and secured with metal heatresistant
tape rather than
duct tape. I often find plastic
or foil accordion-type material,
which can easily trap
lint and is more susceptible
to kinks and crushing.”
Warning signs include:
• Clothes are taking more
than one cycle to dry, especially
jeans and towels.
• No lint visible on lint
screen.
• Dryer repeatedly stops during
a cycle.
• Clothes have moldy smell
after dry cycle.
• Clothes are very hot after a
dry cycle.
• The top of your dryer is
hot to the touch while running.
• There is excess lint left on
your clothing.
“This has been a consumer
education process, but it’s
hard to get the word out,” Enzenberger
said. “Most don’t
call until they have a serious
problem with their dryer.”
Enzenberger suggests
people treat clothes dryers as
a household item in need of
regular maintenance. Consumers
can protect dryer
performance and promote
safety by cleaning the lint
screen between each use,
ensuring the connection between
the dryer and wall is
made of compliant material
and remains unkinked, and
having the dryer exhaust
duct cleaned regularly.
Dryer manufacturers recommend
inspection and
cleaning at least annually.
As something to watch for
in spring, birds will begin to
build nests, and a popular
nesting site for birds is inside
dryer vent lines. Spring
is an important time to have
an inspection and cleaning
of clothes dryers and dryer
vent systems.
Another important tip is to
never let your clothes dryer
run when you are out of the
house or asleep.
Superior Cabinet Supply’s
customers speak for them
A BETTER
DOOR & WINDOW
Your source for one of
America’s most trusted
brands of windows and
patio doors.
Superior Cabinet Supply
is fast approaching its 31st
year of providing Americanmade
cabinetry and countertops
to homeowners, contractors
and home builders.
Superior Cabinet’s roots
started in Park Forest in May
of 1985 as Superior Cabinet
& Window. In 2006, Frank
Klauck, owner and president,
opened his second location,
Superior Cabinet
Supply at 19800 S. Harlem
in Frankfort — just north
of Lincoln-Way North High
School in Harlem Crossings
Shopping Center.
Klauck was a carpentry
contractor for 10 years before
starting the cabinet and
window business in Park
Forest. By 1990, he began
phasing out home building
and construction projects
and focused more on his
role as a window contractor
and kitchen and bath dealer
who served home builders,
contractors and homeowners
directly.
Klauck’s wife, Sandy, has
worked with him for almost
17 years at both showrooms.
She states word-of-mouth
referrals are the bulk of their
business. About 85 percent
of their new customers come
from referrals by genuinely
pleased homeowners and
contractors.
“As humble as we are, accolades
are like receiving an
award, as customer satisfaction
in itself is our reward,”
Sandy said.
The following five-star
Yelp review and email came
from two customers within
the last four months.
“When my husband and
I decided to remodel our
kitchen, we visited at least
10 cabinet companies within
40 miles from our home.
Amazingly, we found Frank
and his wife Sandy close
to our home! Frank was a
carpenter contractor, and
his knowledge and skill
was a decisive factor. Frank
also came to our home,
measured and gave us his
opinion prior to our commitment
to purchase. We
were very pleased with his
pricing. I had quotes for the
exact cabinet manufacturer
from companies located in
Bradley, Illinois, and Tinley
Park, Illinois, and Frank’s
pricing was about 15 percent
less! Throughout the
process, Frank and Sandy
were friendly, knowledgeable
and professional! I also
appreciated the lack of a
hard sale. This is a family
owned company that takes
pride in delivering what
is promised. It has been a
pleasure working with Superior
Cabinet Supply!”
Toni S. — Frankfort
And here is an email received
in late February 2016.
“To Frank and Superior
Cabinet Supply, Thank you
again for delivering our
dream kitchen! I started to
doubt my decision to general
contract my major (wall
removal doubling space)
kitchen remodel after visiting
the ‘big box’ stores regarding
cabinetry. Boring designs,
lack of detail and having to
do work with a third party
installer was a concern.
Thankfully, I found Frank
and Superior Cabinet Supply.
Imaginative designs, ‘custom’
touches, detailed color
renderings, attention to detail
and ‘turnkey’ service made
something difficult very easy
and enjoyable. While installing,
they even helped out with
appliance and HVAC work!
In every regard, including
price, Superior exceeded our
expectations.”
Doug — Palos Park
Newline Design Center
works with customers
with all design needs
Newline Design Center, established in
2004, is a full-service, one-stop shop home
design and selection center.
From design to construction, they will
handle a customer’s project and serve them
every step of the way. This means that there
are never any surprises in design, craftsmanship
or price. Newline’s design-produce-install
approach to service is truly unique to
the retail construction industry and sets them
apart from any kitchen and bath showroom.
Newline will never pass a customer’s project
off to a third-party contractor or follow
cookie-cutter blueprints in order to churn out
a high volume of projects.
At Newline Design Center, experts are
with customers every step of the way making
sure they get the attention to detail they
deserve and the finished product they want.
Newline Design Center, situated in the
heart of Orland Park across the southern entrance
of Orland Square Mall on West 151st
Street, has a 7,000-square-foot showroom
displaying 11 kitchens and seven bathrooms.
This extensive selection of products always
comes with complimentary architectural and
interior design consultations. Whether a customer
has a definite idea of exactly what they
want or are undecided as to the direction of
their remodel, visiting with Newline’s architects
and interior design experts can open
up new ideas and solutions for achieving a
dream result.
While Newline has an extensive residential
showroom, they also offer commercial
products and services. Newline is available
to work with contractors, designers and
homeowners alike, offering the same level
of service and attention to detail for all commercial
clients as they would their residential
customers.
From the second a customer steps into
Newline’s office with the intention of starting
a residential or commercial project,
designers will guide them through the conceptual
process and make recommendations
based off of their vast experience and knowledge.
Achieving a dream space all starts with
design, and no one pays closer attention to
detail and a customer’s needs than Newline
Design Center.
Newline Design Center is committed to
providing the highest level of service, value
and quality of products available. Working
together, Newline can achieve the dream
10 Steps to a Pain-free Remodel
Make it your own.
Don’t design for your
neighbors or other people’s
perception of beautiful design.
Collect as many pictures as
possible and identify what
specifically you like about
them. Is it the color? Is it the
cabinet color? Or is it the
1. 2. 3.
layout? Etc.
Construction
services are not
the same
from one company to another.
It’s not like buying a car that
is made by the same
manufacturer. The way your
space is put together
5. 6.
is critical.
Avoid delivery
delays.
Don’t start until all items
have arrived to
the contractor.
Actual Newline Project
Visit a showroom.
Consult with one of their
designers and share your
ideas with them. Good
designers will guide you
through the process to
reach a coherent design.
Insist on using
trade professionals
for electrical and plumbing
work, even if you are not
obtaining a permit. This will
depend on the scope and
complexity of the project.
Don’t stress
over unexpected issues that
you will certainly run into.
Talk to your contractor and
work through them quickly
10.
and professionally. Don’t
delay your decisions because
you eventually have to
make them!
Service 1 Heating & AC Inc. eliminates homeowner
HVAC stress with expertise, customer service
One of the largest purchases a
family will ever make is its HVAC
system, and of the many components
a homeowner will have to replace
within the lifetime of his or her
home, an HVAC system, is often one
of the most daunting on the list.
Options range from power and
energy efficiency to cost and reliability,
pairing a significant home
replacement with infinite equipment
options. Service 1 Heating & AC
Inc. provides every inquiring mind
with the best possible options most
suited for their homes.
With the goal of easing this process
by making homeowners truly
satisfied customers, Service 1 has the
necessary expertise to ensure the job
gets done right the first time.
Boasting a wide variety of incentives,
including a five-year “same
as cash” financing option on most
select models and utility rebates,
Service 1 is able to allow customers
to tailor a new equipment installation
or service around their needs.
As holds true in any business, confidence
and trust are among the pronounced
qualities that distinguish
a reputable service contractor. For
quality and comfort you can trust,
call Service 1 Heating & AC Inc.
Proudly serving the Chicagoland
suburbs for 10-plus years, Service 1
has been family owned and operated
since opening its doors. With an A+
rating through the Better Business
Bureau and Trane’s Distinguished
Dealer of the Year 2013, 2014 and
2015, every customer who places
their trust in Service 1 may ascertain
a fair price coupled with reliable
work.
The vast complexity pertaining
to replacement and service can be
mind-bending at times, but Service
1 understands that a customer is primarily
concerned with the finished
product. Allowing a customer to be
just that, a customer, extends the
notion of removing additional headaches
and runaround often associated
with home repair.
With a 24-hour emergency service
and never charging a penny
more for nights and weekends, customers
can embrace the true sense
of the term “customer service” by
receiving the highest possible comfort
and care just by dialing the correct
number.
Take it from Duane V., of Lombard,
who said this about Service 1:
“We had Service 1 install a furnace
A/C system in our home about
a year ago. We chose them because
they were clearly knowledgeable
about in-depth technical details of
their equipment, and they were willing
to install at a very competitive
price. I do most of my own service
work and found their installation
crew first rate. I would recommend
this company to anyone.”
If not for extensive knowledge or
industry-wide competitive pricing,
find out how Service 1 can reshape
a customer’s image on the ease of
providing a significant home replacement
by placing customer satisfaction
above all else.
Carrying a large selection of Trane
air conditioners, furnaces, electronic
air cleaners and humidifiers, Service
1 offers warranties and pricing plans
sure to fit every customer’s budget.
As a participant in the Nicor and
ComEd rebate program to qualified
customers, there has never been a
better time than this spring to provide
your home and family with the
comfort they deserve at value that
can’t be beat. Wouldn’t it be nice to
receive a royal treatment at a fraction
of the cost, simply because you
are the customer of a caring contractor
that will put your needs first?
Serving the south, southwest,
western and northwestern suburbs of
AreA Landscape Supply has been proudly
you and your neighbors build the landscape
of your dreams.
Supplying quality hardscape materials
such as Unilock brick pavers, premium hardwood
mulch and decorative stone has been
a priority ever since the beginning. To celebrate
two decades as a member of the community,
an exciting year of savings is planned
to celebrate AreA’s 20th anniversary.
Beginning in Mokena on Wolf Road on a
small portion of rented property and working
from business trailers has now led to acres
of merchandise with a permanent sales office,
outdoor showroom and a fleet of delivery
trucks. The history of AreA Landscape
Supply also includes a high requirement to
support local community organizations and
played for a summer baseball or softball
team sponsored by AreA.
The industry expertise can easily be seen
in the AreA Landscape Supply showroom
with the many awards and accolades presented
The recognition of being an Authorized
accomplishments.
AreA Landscape Supply in Mokena is
a wholesale and retail landscape materials
supply center, specializing in the landscaping
products that do not require water. Typically,
landscape community and related industries
as “hardscape materials.”
Some of the most popular hardscape materials
locally are Unilock Brick Pavers,
retaining wall block, decorative stone, flagstone
and various mulches. These items,
among others, are carried in stock at AreA
Landscape Supply. In fact, AreA carries the
largest supply of Unilock products in stock
in the south suburbs.
Homeowners attempting outdoor projects
can call or stop into AreA with their questions.
The experienced sales staff can help calculate
material needed, recommend the best product
and even give a checklist of steps to follow for
installation. The staff can even recommend a
suitable landscaper or contractor to complete
your project successfully.
The Contractor Referral Center, located
inside the main showroom, contains photographs
Keeping the home tidy after spring cleaning, organization
Professional tips to
maintain efficiency
around the house
Thomas Czaja, Contributing Editor
With winter over and people
continuing to open their windows
to air out the house and begin the
often-arduous task of spring cleaning,
many could use assistance on
how to best tidy up their belongings.
Professional organizers exist to
shed light on the cleaning and organizing
process, helping to tackle
messes one at a time until the home
is refreshed and efficient.
Patty Wolf is a certified professional
organizer specializing in
chronic disorganization who is also
the owner and founder of Stuff-
Busters, located in LaGrange. The
business serves Chicago and its
surrounding south suburbs, including
Orland Park and Tinley Park.
As an organizer, Wolf said the
biggest overall thing is to remember
that while no two jobs or
homes are the same, one of her biggest
overarching pointers is to store
like items with one another.
“It’s like an organizing rule,”
Wolf said. “It makes everything
easier to go to one place and get
what you’re looking for.”
One particular area that gets
cluttered and unorganized is closet
space, Wolf said. To stay organized
with a closet and potentially eliminate
items, Wolf recommends doing
the “hanger trick” of placing
all hangers backwards. After six
months, if the individual still has
not worn the clothes, remaining
backwards hangers are an indicator
it may be time to part with them.
“You want jackets together,
pants together, shirts together,”
Wolf continued. “If you want to
get detailed, you organize by color.
You need to go through every single
thing you own, and don’t leave
any stone unturned.
The Granite and Marble Depot
makes granite purchase,
installation easy as 1-2-3
The Granite and Marble Depot is one of
Chicagoland’s premier granite shops.
It utilizes the highest quality material
and the latest fabrication and installation
techniques. Not all granite fabricators are
the same. Fabrication and installation are
greatly affected by the technology and techniques
utilized by the individual fabricator.
The Granite and Marble Depot can provide
customers with a pamphlet that will inform
them regarding why they should select the
Granite and Marble Depot for their natural
stone countertops and tile needs.
When granite is delivered into the facility,
it is quality inspected by Granite and Marble
Depot technicians. Once the slabs arrive
and pass rigorous inspection, professional
designers will contact customers regarding
viewing their slabs and going over the cuts,
seam location and final verification of design
selections. Customers are invited to participate
in the process every step of the way to
ensure satisfaction with the final product.
Final milling, shaping and all-sink cutouts
are completed using Granite and Marble
Depot’s Breton CNC. Breton is one of the
leading and largest manufacturers of stone
machinery in the world, and they set the
standard for the stone fabrication industry.
Sink templates are downloaded from the
manufacturer’s website, and cutouts are
made in strict accordance with the sink supplier’s
guideline.
Granite countertops are installed by one
of the store’s professional installation crews.
All installers are employed by GMD, and
it doesn’t contract out any of its work. All
installations are preformed according to the
highest standards and as recommended by
the Marble Institute of America.
The Granite and Marble Depot’s showroom
in Mokena displays more than 200
natural stone colors, engineered stone colors,
fireplaces, sinks, facets, tile and more.
Its professional staff includes architects and
designers committed to helping customers
get the desired look for their home.
Easy and quick, GMD makes it an easy
three-step process.
Step 1 involves choosing the perfect stone
design. The Granite and Marble Depot offers
a free consultation at a customer’s home, office
or its showroom to discuss needs and
suggest ideas. GMD highly recommends
that customers bring a sketch of the project
to its showroom. It is a good idea to bring
a cabinet sample and paint color, as well. A
GMD consultant can help customers choose
the right stone, as there are hundreds of colors
to choose from.
Step 2 is placing the order. To place an order
with GMD, customers must have the following
steps complete in their home: cabinets
need to be installed; all of the appliances
in the kitchen need to be on location; and the
sink needs to be on location so that GMD
may take it as a template for the sink cutout.
Once the above requirements are satisfied,
GMD can come out to measure/template the
kitchen. The installers will work with customers
to make sure all the specifications
and technical details are provided.
The last and final step is the installation.
The homeowner must be present for installation.
GMD will install the countertop and
backsplash.
Lastly, GMD will drill the faucet holes, attach
the sink and mount the dishwasher.
Heartier flowers make for long-lasting
garden beauty this spring, beyond
Accessories, statues
liven up any garden
Amanda Jarzynski
Contributing Editor
Spring is the season for
growing things, and there is
no better way to make the
world more beautiful than
by planting a colorful garden
with a variety of flowers that
will last a while.
Kim McAuliffe, owner of
Mokena’s An English Garden
Flowers & Gifts, shared
her gardening tips based on
what she likes to do in her
own garden when the dreary
winter months come to a
close.
“Spend the extra money to
buy plants that are heartier,”
McAuliffe said. “They will
last a lot longer so it’s worth
it.”
The first flowers she noted
were hydrangeas, hearty
plants that blooms faster.
They are partial to a shady
area of the garden and prefer
to be watered at least once if
not twice a day, McAuliffe
said.
“The best part is you can
cut the blooms and bring
them inside,” McAuliffe
said.
It is also nice to have flowers
that come back year after
year like salvia or calla lilies.
McAuliffe said that these
bud plants multiply underground
so that more come
back each year.
“The only problem with
lilies is that they are toxic to
animals [if eaten],” McAuliffe
said. “So keep them
away from pets.”
McAuliffe said. They are not
the most hearty of plants, so
when purchasing them, be
sure to buy five or six in case
one passes away.
“What I like to do in my
garden is scatter wildflower
seeds,” McAuliffe said.
“You can buy nice assorted
packages and spread them
wherever. You can always
reseed them, and they attract
butterflies like crazy.”
Peonies are another popular
spring plant, but unfortunately
they attract the wrong
kind of insects to the garden.
“Plant them farther away
from the house, because
they draw ants,” McAuliffe
said. “Ants suck up the sap,
so the peonies are friendly
Ultra-Green cares about
customer experience
Ultra-Green Inc. has been
servicing lawns on the South
and Southwest sides of Chicago
and the suburbs since
1989.
As a small, family owned
and operated business, Ultra-
Green cares about the service
it provides to its customers,
and that is something it is
very proud of. The business
cares about its customer experience
and takes its time to
make sure all jobs are done
correctly the first time.
Ultra-Green has been servicing
lawns in this area for
more than 25 years and is
aware of the problems that
residents see year after year.
To combat these problems,
Ultra-Green uses the highest
quality products that money
can buy, instead of cutting
costs with cheap products
that are not as effective or
do not work. It also uses a
granular fertilizer and liquid
weed control to give its
customers the healthy, green
lawns they desire.
At Ultra-Green Inc., employees
take their time on
customer lawns and make
sure they do their work right.
Ultra-Green offers four, five
or six treatments for its customers,
instead of seven or
eight like some other companies.
It feels that this is the
correct amount needed, and
charging its customers for
any more would be a waste
of their money.
Along with lawn maintenance,
Ultra-Green also offers
perimeter pest control,
aerations and flea and tick
Lawn-Tech: the
area’s best choice in
professional lawn
care since 1984
Lawn-Tech, Ltd. is a family-owned
business that has
specialized in the custom
application of fertilizers and
pesticides to lawns, trees and
shrubs for 32 years.
The company currently
services more than 11,000
properties in the southwest
suburban area, with 21 service
vehicles. Lawn-Tech
uses granular fertilizer and
liquid weed controls yearround
to care for your lawn.
Optional services include
preventive grub control, core
aeration, preventive and curative
insect and disease
control, specialty programs
for diseased lawns, and preemergent
control of weeds in
landscape beds.
Lawn-Tech offers flexible
programs based on customers’
expectations and finances.
It also offers tree and
shrub fertilization, treatment
for insect and disease suppression
and specialty programs,
if needed, for plantspecific
problems.
Lawn-Tech customers receive
newsletters when the
lawn is serviced which discuss
common seasonal problems
customers’ lawns may be experiencing,
as well as guidelines
on how to do their maintenance
activities correctly.
Lawn-Tech dry fertilizers
contain controlled release nitrogen
year-round to give a
more even feeding over the
entire application period and
to reduce burn potential in
hot weather. Organic matter is
added seasonally to improve
the quality of the poor soils on
which most lawns are grown.
Lawn-Tech feels this is a
major difference between
their program and those of
others, whose brochures may
only mention controlled release
nitrogen in one summer
application to reduce “burn”
potential.
Quick release nitrogen is
much cheaper, which is reflected
in their low prices. If
they were using controlled
release year-round or were
applying organic matter,
that would be a major selling
point, which you’d think
they would mention.
Lawn-Tech services residential
lawns, as well as businesses,
school districts and
football and baseball fields.
organization
From Page 14
“Also, focus on seasonal. For springtime,
take winter clothing out of the closet and
store it elsewhere, maybe in a different room
or plastic bins under the bed.”
For the bedroom or any other room as a
whole, Wolf tends to focus on her “like with
like” rule for cleaning out drawers, and she
added that organization is important to a person’s
frame of mind.
“A lot of clients, as well as myself, say
that when a room is messy, they can’t get
anything done,” Wolf said. “It’s distracting.
When organized and simplified, you can be
most productive and feel relief and in better
control.”
For tackling a more unique area like the
garage, Wolf said the biggest key is to not let
the garage become so filled that a car cannot
be parked in there, which she sees from some
of her clients.
Instead, using things like a vertical wall
system with hooks for items like bigger tools
or lawn equipment can keep things efficient
and maximize space, she said.
Wolf also advised that ideally, a garage will
not require shelving, but realistically, most
people need at least some shelving there to
store belongings. In that case, she said to use
shelving but keep it to a minimum and use
clear containers or bags so items can easily
be found later, whether by the individual doing
the cleaning or someone else.
“People bring new things in, and they forget
to let old things go,” Wolf said. “I like
to use the example of an ocean current. It
comes in, and it also goes out.
“When you bring in a new bike, it’s the
perfect time to let the old bike flow out. It’s
time to give the old things to someone else so
they can use them.”
Wolf said the home is “valuable real estate”
and that the hardest part isn’t cleaning
and organizing but staying organized.
“People call me [feeling] overwhelmed,”
Wolf said. “They are looking at the big picture
and not looking at little chunks. Sometimes,
the best way to tackle big projects is
one manageable chunk at a time.
“If you need help, get someone to do the
spring organizing and refreshing with you
so you’re not alone. When you work with
someone who is judgment free, they are
supporting you. You’re in control, and simplification
is the most important part of the
process to make life easier.”
But a beautiful garden is
not just made up of pretty
flowers. To liven up the
space, add ornamental objects
such as cement statues,
birdhouses or trellises.
McAuliffe said she uses
old wash tubs as makeshift
pots to hold some of her
larger plants displayed at the
front of her house.
“It’s also fun to collect
garden accessories,” McAuliffe
said. “I personally collect
cement gargoyles, but
other people collect angels.”
Accessories can also be
dressed up with flowers.
For trellises, clematis flowers
are popular, as they are
a plant that likes to climb
objects, McAulliffe said.
These plants do require both
sun and shade to survive, but
will return year after year.
Don’t re-sand or replace that old floor,
1-Day Recoat it with Complete Flooring
Over time, with normal or even extreme
use, the top layer of finish on hardwood
floors will wear and become dull. This leaves
floors vulnerable to stains, dirt build-up and
surface scratches.
Worn finishes lose their luster, shine and
have an overall cloudy appearance. When this
happens, the homeowner is faced with limited
and expensive choices to fix this situation.
The current options for restoring hardwood
flooring have been either re-sanding
or completely replacing worn-out floors. Resanding
is a messy job. There is the dust, the
fumes (sometimes toxic) and the time — it
usually takes days to complete the project.
Replacing floors is not much better. There
isn’t as much dust or fumes, but it still takes
days. Both options are expensive.
It’s no wonder that many people have this
work done when they’re out of town or on
vacation.
Now, there is a better option.
1-Day Recoat is the fast, safe, economical
and durable way to keep hardwood floors
looking new. The advantages over traditional
methods make it an attractive alternative for
restoring hardwood floors.
Some of the advantages
to using 1-Day Recoat include:
• 1-Day Recoat costs less than conventional
sanding methods and products — usually
less than 98 cents per square foot. It saves
money, time and the mess associated with
conventional sanding or replacing floors.
Conventional refinishing can take up to a
week and cost as much as $3 per square
foot or more.
• 1-Day Recoat is environmentally friendly,
low odor and extremely fast-drying. The
“green” engineered coatings don’t have
the odor or toxic chemical fumes used in
normal refinishing. The whole process is
safer for family and pets and better for
the environment, too. And, because these
coatings dry quickly, the floor is ready
to use in less than 24 hours. These coatings
meet and/or exceed the standards set
by the U.S. Green Building Council and
Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED).
• 1-Day Recoat has multiple coating grades.
This allows the homeowner to choose the
best coating to match the wear and traffic
patterns of their floor. These finishes range
from floors with light traffic to floors that
endure heavy traffic and large pets.
• With 1-Day Recoat, it’s possible to recoat
pre-finished floors. There is a big myth
about the inability to recoat pre-finished
floors. With the advances in coating technology,
it is now possible to recoat most
factory-finished hardwood flooring.
• 1-Day Recoat offers a free consultation.
This session is a no-risk, no-obligation,
no-charge meeting to determine the condition
and traffic patterns of the floors and
discuss any other factors that could influence
the project.
• 1-Day Recoat has a team of professionals
dedicated to your satisfaction. They work
continually to improve our service, processes
and offerings in order to provide the homeowner
with the best possible experience and
floor finishes that will last for years.
Prusak can help
RESIDENTIAL • COMMERCIAL • INDUSTRIAL
extend the lives
of roofs, siding
Roof inspections can give customers confidence in roof integrity
Spring has finally arrived,
and people are cleaning their
homes, getting rid of winter
dust and grime, and opening
windows to let in fresh air.
Lawns and gardens are
also getting transformed,
but one home maintenance
area that is often overlooked
is the roof. This neglect can
lead to an unpleasant and
costly roof emergency.
According to Prusak
Roofing & Construction,
phones ring often this time
of year as upset homeowners
complain of leaky roofs.
These scenarios could likely
be avoided by having a thorough
roof inspection. If necessary,
minor repairs can be
made and help save customers
money.
A roof inspection can provide
customers with confidence
in the integrity of
their roofs. Prusak gives an
overall picture of the health
of roofs by providing a detailed
inspection of the roof,
gutter, fascia and soffit system.
Minor roof issues, if
caught early, can generally
be repaired at a reasonable
cost and extend the lives of
most roofs.
Prusak Construction &
Roofing has been the roofing,
siding and construction
contractor of choice for
thousands of new and repeat
customers for more than 50
years. Prusak Construction
& Roofing also has an A+
rating with the Better Business
Bureau. With comprehensive
expertise in storm
damage, Prusak Construction
will work with insurance
companies to ensure
a customer receives proper
care.
Selecting the right contractor
is the most important
factor to the success of a customer’s
home maintenance
and improvement projects.
Customers should consider
how long a contractor has
been in business, the quality
of workmanship, the guarantee
of work being completed
as expected, competitive
pricing and a promise from
a company to stand behind
its work.
A Prusak customer receives
a positive experience
from beginning to end. An
owner who comes to the customer’s
home and personally
views the situation provides
every customer a free, detailed
estimate. The estimate
includes pricing options so
customers can choose what
is right for their needs. The
estimates are very competitive.
Prusak only uses toprated
industry products that
offer the customer high quality
and peace of mind.
Prusak provides a start
date and calls local municipal
offices to arrange for
permits to save customers
time and ensure the job is
Prusak owner present the entire
time. If customers have
questions or concerns, they
have immediate access to
a decision maker. Prusak’s
employees are screened and
hired by the owners, and
Prusak carries full worker’s
compensation and liability
insurance. The customer’s
property will be in the same
condition when Prusak
leaves as it was when the
company arrived. All trash
and scrap is removed from
the property and disposed of
by Prusak.
When the job is complete,
Prusak’s relationship
with the customer doesn’t
end. Prusak stands behind
its work and guarantees the
project. Should customers
have any concerns, they can
call Prusak, and the company
will return to make sure
customers are satisfied with
the project.
