GENERAL INFORMATION
Essential Tips to Get You Settled In
Think Green
Think green and help us conserve electricity and water. Turn OFF all air
conditioners and lights when you leave the rooms and be mindful of your
water usage as it can get scarce in the dry season.
• Since we are on a septic system, we ask that you DO NOT
throw toilet paper in the toilets but rather in the waste
baskets provided.
• As in most developing countries, we are prone to the occasional
power outage. Please be patient; in most cases, the lights are
restored in a matter of minutes. Every house has candles and
flashlights in the kitchen just in case.
• A great trick for keeping the BUGS at bay at night is to KEEP THE
LIGHTS LOW and the FANS ON.
• Leftover food should not be left on the counters. Please store it in the
refrigerator, microwave, or oven. Our jungle friends, like ants and
monkeys, like late night snacks as much as we do!
Drinking Water
Tap water is completely SAFE to drink in Costa Rica.
Communications, WIFI AND Internet
• When using the house phone, local calls are free throughout Costa
Rica, just dial the 8-digit number direct.
• For making international calls we suggest using a calling card. They
are the least expensive option and are available in Quepos at the
pharmacy across from the central market and in Manuel Antonio at
Super Joseth. You can also use a credit card; just dial 1116 for an
international operator.
• If you have an unlocked phone, you can buy local pre paid phone
chips called KOLBI. These can be purchased at Super Joseth in
Manuel Antonio or the Economic pharmacy in Quepos across from the
Central Market. The cost is c2500 for the chip and this comes
charged with talk time and when out, the chip can easily be refilled
at the same places.
• If the wireless internet connection is not working there are several
internet cafes in the area. The closest one is at the Si Como No Hotel,
just go up to the main road, turn right and it is about 100 meters
down
Exchanging Money
There is no need to change a lot of US Dollars to Costa Rica Colones as
Dollars are accepted everywhere. If you are driving, it's a good idea to
exchange about $5-$10 for tolls on the highway. When you pay with US $,
you will receive Colones back as change. There is no need to wait in the
LONG lines at the bank to exchange money. Most ATMs offer US $ as an
option for withdrawal.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE INFORMATION
Driving Directions
San Jose to Manuel Antonio
IF you have the APP WAZE, CLICK on the link below for DIRECTIONS to our
office in MANUEL ANTONIO:
Directions to Escape Villas
The drive from the San Jose airport (Juan Santamaria International Airport)
to Manuel Antonio will take about 2 hours and 15 minutes and is fully
paved with the new highway in place. We suggest exchanging at least $5
US dollars into Costa Rican Colones for the tolls on the highway. Ask the
rental car agent to send you off in the right direction, which should be
west on Route 1, past the airport. Drive defensively and be aware when
two lanes become one, "CEDA" means "Yield."
Note: The first 13 km uses the same "old" route to Manuel Antonio. GPS
devices might not be updated and will likely still have the "old" route so
do not rely on them to follow the complete recommended route.
Once on Route 1 - follow signs to San Ramon, and continue straight ahead
for about 10 km. After the second bridge crossing, get in the right lane
and take the next exit (Route 3) for Jaco / Quepos / Manuel Antonio. There
is also a sign here for Punta Leona and Atenas. Turn left at the stop sign,
crossing back over Route 1.
Follow Route 3 for about 3 km. Look for a large Christian church on the left
and then a soccer field and make a left on the road immediately after it.
You are on the road to Turrucares. There are no signs and it's a secondary
road, so don't think you've made a mistake. It's currently the best
connection to the toll highway from the airport.
Drive for another 3 km through this somewhat winding road. Once you
arrive at the highway intersection turn left BEFORE the highway. Again,
there are no signs here yet. Be careful as it's a narrow two-way gravel
access road. After some 300 meters, you will arrive at a roundabout. Make
a right following the highway signs to Orotina / Atenas.
Drive on the highway through 2 toll booths. Then, take the next right exit
to Route 34, follow signs for Jaco / Quepos. This exit forms a loop, and
then you bypass a roundabout to continue straight to Jaco (another 36
km).
Follow Route 34 (also called Costanera) for a while, and you will cross over
the Tarcoles River Bridge - there are usually a few cars parked before/after
the bridge since it is a popular viewing point for the crocodiles lurking in
and around the river.
Shortly after this, you will see the ocean on your right-hand side. Pass
Punta Leona and Herradura - you will see the Automercado supermarket
on the right-hand side of the road.
Follow the signs to Jaco and Manuel Antonio. You will pass through one
Rotunda; then the road leads directly to Quepos.
As you approach Quepos after passing through a small town called Parrita,
you will see an exit sign to the right for Quepos. DO NOT TAKE THIS EXIT.
That route is closed because of bridge work up ahead. Keep left, and you
will pass a large grocery store on the left called Maxi Pali. About 2 miles
ahead you will come to an intersection with a gas station on your right.
Turn right at the gas station and follow this winding road till you can see
you are entering Quepos. You will see a grocery store on your right called
Pali and Alamo Car Rental on your left. Turn left at the street across from
Pali and where Alamo sits. You are now on the main road to Manuel
Antonio. Follow this road about 3 miles, and you will see a 2-story Plaza
shopping center on your right, very modern so it stands out. Just past the
shopping center on the right you will see a building with a restaurant
upstairs called Agua Azul. Below is a Colwell Banker office. Your host will
meet you out front in the parking lot. I will let you know what phone
number to call when you leave the airport and as you pass Jaco to alert
your host of your progress. Our hosts change houses from time to time but
i will let you know the number before you leave the states. Enable
international roaming on your phone before you leave. You won't have to
use it much but in cases of emergency it is a good idea. Also, you might
call your bank and let them know you might be using your debit/credit
card in Costa Rica on the dates you are here. Finally, don't worry about
changing your money to Costa Rican colones as everyone takes USD here.
You will receive change in colones, however.
Arrival Information
Arrival Information
Please let your Concierge know if you need a private shuttle, rental
car, or flight booked to our area. We're here to help! If you drive
yourself, please let your Concierge know what time your flight arrives in
Costa Rica.
All over Costa Rica, there are NO street addresses and minimal street
signs. Due to that, driving at night can be tricky. We suggest a
shuttle, to make your arrival less stressful. We can always have a rental
car dropped off at the villa the next morning for you to enjoy.
If you are driving, you'll need to give a quick call to your Host to let them
know you're on the way. Calling your Host is very important so they
can estimate your arrival time and be waiting for you at the
office.
Your Concierge will give you the Host's cell number and Whatsapp info
before your arrival. The rental car companies never have an issue with
you making a quick local call to let us know you're on the way. The drive
from San Jose area is about 3 hours to Manuel Antonio. Your Host most
likely will meet you at our office; then you follow the Host to your villa.
Departure Information
Departure Information
One of your Hosts will be there about 15-20 mins BEFORE you leave. They
will do a quick walk through to make sure no one has forgotten anything.
The Host will collect all the KEYS, and you'll be ready to go. Please be
sure to let your Host know what time you're planning on leaving so they
can plan to meet you. If you're having us take care of the transport, your
Concierge will coordinate with your Host.
GETTING AROUND
About Quepos / Manuel Antonio
Quepos / Manuel Antonio Description
Playa Manuel Antonio is one of the best places for a beach vacation in
Costa Rica. An award-winning paradise destination, Manuel Antonio has
amazing beaches, beautiful blue waters, and lush tropical rainforests. The
natural beauty of Manuel Antonio provides the perfect setting for an
unforgettable beach vacation to Costa Rica that the entire family will
enjoy.
With four gorgeous beaches to frequent, the pristine Manuel Antonio
National Park, tropical coral reefs and a generous abundance of flora and
fauna, visitors to Playa Manuel Antonio enjoy everything from sports
fishing to snorkeling to hiking through Costa Rica’s rainforest in search of
exotic wildlife.
When the sun goes down, Manuel Antonio comes to life. With the
glimmering stars overhead, restaurants and bars in Manuel Antonio and
the neighboring town of Quepos begin to come alive! Filled with people
sipping on cocktails, drinking ice cold beer, and discussing their
adventures, the local bars in Manuel Antonio and Quepos are perfect for a
relaxing time. Vacations to Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica are truly an escape
to paradise.
Beaches
Manuel Antonio Beaches
Another great thing about Manuel Antonio are the beaches. Inside the
National Park ($16 per person entrance fee) there are 4 great white sand
beaches. Some of the few white sand beaches in all of Costa Rica. Just
before and outside of the park is the public beach. It's about 1 mile long
of beautiful beach to enjoy. You are also close to a hidden gem of a beach
named "Playa Bisanz". Bisanz is a great beach to visit during LOW tide.
There are rocky coves to explore but ONLY during LOW tide. You can get
to these beaches either via public bus or taxi. Just ask your Host and they
can help you. If you have a rental car you can explore some of the
beaches South of Manuel Antonio.
Some of the beaches here have riptides. So please be careful when
playing in the waves. If you're not a strong swimmer never go higher than
waist deep or behind where the waves are breaking. If caught in a riptide
DON'T PANIC and NEVER try to fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until
you are out of the riptide. They are usually about 10 to 20 feet wide.
Once out rest a moment floating. Then swim back to shore. We don't tell
you this to scare you, only to help you be more informed and enjoy your
vacation.
Other Fun Destinations
Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the favorite destinations in Costa
Rica for enjoying its diverse flora and fauna. Monkeys, sloths, agouti,
raccoons, and many species of birds, as well as beautiful white sand
beaches, reached after a wonder-filled hike through the forest.
Marina Pez Vela
Quepos/Manuel Antonio is a star destination for sports fishermen from
around the world due to its calm waters and rich supply of sailfish, marlin,
dorado, and tuna. Our marina is the largest in all of Central America and
offers first class, five-star services. It is also an enjoyable destination for
land lovers thanks to its boardwalk, ocean views, terrific open-air
Dine in a place with a bit of history. This restaurant is an old US cargo
plane from the Iran-Contra scandal, turned into a restaurant. Good food,
great views, and the place has a secret history. Located across from El
Gato Negro, it's a big airplane on the right as you head towards the public
beach. Great for kids as they can explore the cockpit.
SPA SERVICES
Local Spa Services
Manuel Antonio Spa Services
Being on vacation is all about pampering yourself and your loved ones -
and what better way than with a Massage or Spa Treatment!
Ask your Concierge or Host about our In-Villa Spa Services. We can help
arrange for a highly trained Therapist to do Facials, Manicures and
Pedicures, Body Treatments and Massages right in your villa.
We can also recommend Spa Services in town depending on your budget
and needs. Give your Concierge or Host a call to arrange Spa Services at
your convenience.
SAFETY
Safety Tips
Safety
• Please LOCK the villa when everyone is out and, at NIGHT before
going to bed. We do have security guards in the area, but it is always
better to be safe than sorry. Please do not leave any valuables out in
the open when you are away from the villa.
• We also strongly suggest that you use the safes that are provided in
the house and only carry copies of your passport with you. Unless
you are driving, leave your Passport in the safe.
• Manuel Antonio is a safe town, but unfortunately, petty thieves exist
everywhere. Do not leave things in plain view in your car while
unattended. Lock your vehicles. Do not leave your belongings
unattended on the beach, always have someone you trust watching
them.
