Construction and property<br />

Infrastructure spending is a big sector driver in <strong>Mpumalanga</strong>.<br />

The <strong>Mpumalanga</strong> Provincial Government has committed<br />

to investing more than R4-billion in the short term in infrastructure<br />

in the province. A staged investment by the<br />

national government in support of the construction of<br />

the new University of <strong>Mpumalanga</strong> will see expenditure of about<br />

R1-billion per year for three years.<br />

Provincial government priorities are roads, schools and health facilities.<br />

In 2015 an amount of R2.3-billion was spent on the construction<br />

and maintenance of rural and urban roads throughout the province.<br />

The University of <strong>Mpumalanga</strong> has two campuses. Many of the<br />

facilities at the existing teachers’ training college at Siyabuswa are<br />

being upgraded, but new buildings are being added to the campus:<br />

six student residence buildings, a canteen and recreation room, as<br />

well as a student centre. At Mbombela, a student residence is being<br />

constructed to accommodate nearly 250 students, and there will<br />

also be an office block, council chamber and a modern auditorium<br />

and library.<br />

In the public health sector, construction of four new primary<br />

healthcare centres will be completed by <strong>2017</strong> at an estimated cost<br />

of R385-million.<br />
