Millis to Dedicate New
Memorial on Veterans Day
New Monument Honors Veterans from end
of Vietnam through Present Day
John Monti, of A. Monti Granite Company, in Quincy lays etchings atop granite that will become
Millis’ memorial to its fallen veterans from the Vietnam War through all conflicts to the present day.
The stone came from the same quarry as the Vietnam/Korean monument, which was etched by
Monti’s father. It will be dedicated at the Millis Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on November 11.
By J.D. O’Gara
The Veterans Day Ceremony
in Millis will take place
on November 11, 2016. The
ceremony will begin promptly
at 11 a.m. at the Veterans
newly expanded Memorial
Park in front of the Millis Town
Hall. This year’s program will
include the dedication of the
new Veterans Memorial to
honor all those Millis residents
who have served during the
conflicts in Grenada, Panama
and the Persian Gulf War.
“This brings to a conclusion
what I hoped, what I wanted
to see accomplished and I’m
pleased to see that the town is
finally going to complete it as
Social Media Savvy for
Medway Foundation
for Education
By J.D. O’Gara
Telethons are awfully hard to
pull off these days, in the era of
cell phones and telemarketers,
not to mention the dwindling of
land lines. That’s what prompted
the Medway Foundation for Education,
a non-profit educational
community foundation that has
given out $255,000 in grants Medway
Public School educators since
2002, to try something new this
year – the non-telethon.
“We have historically, for over a
decade, done an annual telethon,”
says Brian Gray, president of the
Medway Foundation for Education
this year, who has been involved
for about 10 years now. “Mostly
high school students would spend
three nights a week for two weeks
making phone calls, basically, to
residents in town for donations
to support the program.” At one
time, says Gray, this fundraiser
worked very well, one year bringing
in nearly $10,000, but in the
past few years, donations have declined
to just half of that last year.
The non-telethon was launched
through social media and the
school communications and website.
“We’ve made efforts in past year
to modernize,” says Gray. “We’re
getting on social media, and we
have two great interns at the high
school helping us do that.”
Sue Olson, MFE Vice-President,
says that last year, those two
students were Annie Muise and
Kylie O’Neill, and this year, the
two interns are Kylie O’Neall and
Clarissa Marroquin.
“The plan is to always have a
senior and a junior,” says Olson.
“We have two seniors this year, because
Clarissa has a lot of graphics
experience and we want to revamp
the logo and spruce up the website,
and in return they get a scholarship
at the end of the year and
we hoped it would be,” says lifelong
Millis resident, WWII veteran
and American Legion Post
208 member Bud Shropshire,
who came up with a design for
the site at Veterans Memorial
Building and advocated for an
expanded memorial for about
16 years.
When the new Millis Police
Station was to be built, the Korean/Vietnam
War memorial o
the site needed to be moved to
the Veterans Memorial Building.
“That process has been going
on for at least two years now,”
says Millis DPW Director Jim
McKay. “That left an opening to
design something from Vietnam
on for every conflict. There was
nothing that commemorated the
veterans from that time period.”
Thanks to the research efforts
of past Millis Veterans Services
Officers Bob Yeager and John
Wypizinski, as well as the Millis’
current Veterans Officer, Cynthia
Harris, says McKay, the
new monument, created by the
same company, A. Monti Granite
Company, that created the
Vietnam/Korean monument,
contains over 80 names of fallen
Millis soldiers.
Some of those soldiers
named, says McKay, served in
different conflicts. Harris, he
says, came up with a way to address
this on the monument.
“There might be around 10
people that have served in different
conflicts, and the way we’re
going to commemorate them is,
beside each name, there will be
a star put there, and that will indicate
they served in more than
one of the conflicts.
It’s one of the greatest things
that I’ve worked on since I’ve
been here. To look at names like
that, and you see that they were
young kids you’ve seen on the
ball field – meeting with all the
veterans from WWII to the present
– it’s been a complete honor
working on something like this,”
says McKay.
With the walkway and lighting,
says McKay, people are telling
him that they’ve looked at the
memorial for the first time. They
become even more enthusiastic
when they hear there will be another
monument installed.
“This is the first time since
1975, when the Vietnam war
ended, that all those that served
in the conflict will be recognized,”
says Mark Slayton,
Vietnam veteran and American
Legion Post 208 member.
The Master of Ceremonies
will be American Legion Post
208 Commander Lawrence J.
McCarter, SMSgt, USAF (Ret).
425 schools in the United States
and Canada to be included on the
2016 AP Honor Roll for increasing
access to AP curriculum while
maintaining high standards.
Through 34 different collegelevel
courses and exams, AP provides
willing and academically
prepared students with the opportunity
to earn college credit or advanced
placement and stand out
in the college admission process.
Each exam is developed by a committee
of college and university
faculty and AP teachers, ensuring
that AP Exams are aligned with
the same high standards expected
by college faculty at some of the
nation’s leading liberal arts and
research institutions. More than
3,800 colleges and universities
annually receive AP scores. Most
four-year colleges in the United
States provide credit and/or advanced
placement for qualifying
exam scores. Research consistently
shows that AP students who
score a 3 or higher on AP Exams
(based on a scale from 1 to 5, with
5 being the highest) typically experience
greater academic success
in college and have higher college
graduation rates than students
who do not participate in AP.
the salon got involved in supporting
“We try to pick different
In October, for example, Willow
Shop Local
You may be aware that Saturday, November 26th is nationally recognized as Small
Business Saturday.
We think this is important.
However, we like to think of every day as an opportunity to support local
businesses. Luckily, so many of you share our sentiments.
Often referred to as the Shop Local or Buy Local movement, there are widespread
and undeniable benefits in a shared commitment to support our local merchants. We see
this trend gaining considerable momentum in the communities we’re so privileged to
serve.
This movement is more about what’s good for a community and its residents, and
less about global retailers extracting money from our towns.
As your community bank, we’ve
proudly taken the lead on supporting our
local merchants and organizations.
We believe that buying local means
banking local. A bank like ours ensures
your deposits will be reinvested directly
into this community.
It may be interesting to know that
more people have made the switch to
Needham Bank in 2016 than in any prior
year throughout our long history. For
that, we are most grateful.
Your decision to bank locally
enables us to increase our capital, which
not only allows us to lend more locally,
but also helps fund more of the local
initiatives that we all care about.
As our business continues to grow,
we will continue to expand what we give
back to the community. In just this year
alone we will support over 300 different
community organizations.
This November and throughout the
holiday season, remember that shopping
local has a profoundly positive impact on
our community and the local economy.
The Medway Foundation for Education turned to social media as
interest in its annual telethon declined. This tally board, located
outside Medway Middle School and created by freshman Ethan Core,
marked the progress of the 2016 non-telethon.
FUNDRAISING
continued from page 1
something to put on their resume
and college application.”
There are a few old fashioned
indicators of the fundraiser, including
lawn signs around town as
well as a tally board at the Medway
Middle School, beautifully
designed and painted by Medway
High School freshman Ethan
Core.
Donating at The Medway
Foundation for Education website,
www.MFEducation.org, is quick
and easy with a Network for Good
link
“It’s how people pay for
things,” says Olson. Years ago,
she says, the MFE would send
people out to collect donations in
envelopes from residents who had
committed to donate, a process
that was a lot of work.
MFE supporters can also mail
a check or drop them off in boxes
at at both Middlesex Savings Bank
and Charles River Bank in Medway.
Want to be a part of the Medway
Foundation for Education and
help fund innovative programming
in the schools? Olson says
the group is looking for new board
members, as the current members
have older kids and will soon need
to pass down ownership of the
program.
The non-telethon is just one
way MFE is looking to keep fresh.
Last spring, it had great success
with a dodge ball event, and Gray
and Olson expect interest in that
will grow this year. This month,
they are working with Pour Richards
in Franklin on November 17
for a wine and whiskey fundraising
night from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tickets,
available at www.MFEducation.
org, are $10 in advance or $12 at
the door.
Other upcoming MFE fundraisers
include a food truck festival
at the Thayer House, a prom gown
consignment sale, a Whole Foods
fundraiser, a Napper Tandy’s fundraiser
for the holiday season and
an annual Trivia Bee (12 years in
the running), in March.
Gray points out that area businesses
have been wonderfully supportive,
including (but not limited
to Middlesex Bank and Charles
River Bank, Direct Tire, Cybex,
Medway Block, the Muffin House
and Custom Apparel.
The purpose of all of this fundraising?
“We do all this so we can raise
money, so we can turn around and
give grants for things that are beyond
the normal school budget,”
says Gray. “Our median annual
grant budget is about $18,000 and
we’re hoping to grow that. We’re
also hoping to grow an endowment
fund, so we can lean on that
in the future to support grant funding.
“Grants run from better access
to technology such as Smartmusic
and iPads to funding for art and
exercise programs and innovations
to make classrooms work
better. Sometimes, if MFE funds a
proposal one year and it does well,
the school might pull that into the
budget for the following year. Gray
notes that this happened with “Science
Saturday for Girls,” which
later became “STEM Saturday for
Girls,” that’s now getting funding
through the regular school budget.
Similarly, Olson points out that
Medway students now have access
to JSTOR, a wealth of high quality
academic journals and books,
after MFE initially funded the access.
Other examples of MFE grants
include:
• The Permanent District Student
Art Collection
• BOKS (Reebok Foundation before
and after school physical
activity)
• Micropipettes for Molecular Genetics
Applications
• 6 th Grade Speaker Series (Lost
Boys of Sudan, etc.)
• Fostering Curious Readers
• The WeatherBug System
• Middle School Garden
• Investigating Rotational Motion,
and The “Herren Project,”
among many others.
For the latter, Gray explains
that MFE works in cooperation
with the Medway Parent Teacher
Organization, MEPTO. When
MEPTO planned to have Chris
Herren come talk to the students
about his experience with drugs,
they reached out to MFE to fund
a program for the parents.
“We had like 600 people come
to that event,” says Gray.
Christmas and New Year’s on the
near horizon, it’s the perfect time
of year to stock up on quality
Medway Lions Recognizes One
of its Own
At the September Medway
Lions monthly dinner meeting,
the club presented Lion Peter
Ciolek with the Massachusetts
Lions Eye Research Sight Award
in recognition of his outstanding
and dedicated service to furthering
the cause of eye research.
Peter has been a Medway
Lion for over fifteen years, during
which time he has served in
a variety of positions both in the
Medway club, and with the district
in dedicated support of the
Eye Mobile. While the criteria for
selecting an award recipient varies
from club to club, it may include
the Lion’s participation in
fund raising activities, dedicated
work on projects for the blind,
or overall service to the goals of
eye research. It was obvious that
Peter fit all categories.
As a Sight Award recipient,
Peter received an Eye Research
Sight Award pin and distinctive
plaque.
Flashes and Floaters
By: Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Many patients will be aware
of small flying “black spots” in
the field of vision in one or both
eyes. These are called floaters
and may be associated with
flashes of light. Flashes and floaters
may have serious implications
on the vision.
What are floaters?
Floaters are small black shadows
in the vision of one or both
eyes, especially when looking at a
specific surface like a white page,
a bright sky or perhaps when
walking on the beach. These
black spots are impurities in the
fluid that fills the back cavity of
the eye. This jelly fluid is called
the “vitreous” and has a consistency
similar to “egg white.” This
vitreous fluid is present in the eye
from birth and is not replaced or
exchanged during life. It is initially
attached to the surface of
the retina, which is the light sensitive
nerve tissue layer that lines
the back surface of the wall of
the eye. It is important to note
that it is not necessarily abnormal
to see black spots in the vision.
The size and number of
floaters seen is variable; some
patients (especially short sighted
people) will be aware of numerous
floaters, while others may
never be aware of the symptom
at all. Some floaters can interfere
severely with vision, while
others are barely noticeable. Although
annoying, floaters are
usually harmless and come and
go over the years.
What are flashes?
Flashes are usually caused
by the vitreous body tugging
on the retina. This tugging
occurs when the vitreous body
shrinks as a normal part of the
aging process. Flashes may last
for a few seconds or several minutes
and can occur on and off
for weeks or months. They are
usually seen at night or in poor
lighting.
Eye migraine can cause
the perception of similar light
flashes, although often these
flashes of light may have numerous
colors. The abnormal
light flashes seen with migraines
are usually very different, appearing
as jagged lines blocking
an area of vision or moving
slowly across the field of vision
in one or both eyes. People who
suffer from migraine headaches
will often know the familiar pattern
of these visual experiences,
often occurring just before the
headaches begin. These migraine
flashes are unrelated to
the vitreous body and its attachment
to the retina.
What causes flashes and
floaters?
The vitreous is composed of
collagen, and this undergoes
structural changes with age,
and will become more liquid
like and watery in later life. At
some point, the chemical bonds
that link the vitreous fluid to the
surface of the retina will become
weaker and the vitreous jelly will
separate from the retina. This
process is called posterior vitreous
detachment or PVD and
is a normal consequence of
aging. Approximately half of
us will have a PVD in one or
both eyes by the age of 60. PVD
will often cause us to notice
the sudden onset of new floaters,
often associated with flashes
of light. Unfortunately, the vitreous
body is sometimes more
firmly attached to the surface
of the retina and may pull away
a piece of the retina or tear the
retina as it separates. This can
cause fluid to escape, pushing
the retina off the inside of the
eye. This is known as retinal
detachment, which is a serious
threat to sight. Surgery is needed
to reattach the retina if a retinal
detachment occurs.
Flipside Gymnastics
Celebrating 23 years in Medway, MA!
When should I seek help?
See your ophthalmologist
if new floaters appear, with or
without sudden light flashes. Any
loss of peripheral (side) vision
should be investigated without
delay. Your ophthalmologist
will give you a complete eye examination.
Drops are put in the
eyes to enlarge the pupils and
determine whether PVD, retinal
tear, retinal detachment or
bleeding is present. If you have
occasional floaters and flashes,
you should have an annual eye
examination.
Symptoms of a PVD most
often occur in one eye at a
time. Even though your ophthalmologist
will check both eyes at
the first visit, it is important to
realize that if similar symptoms
are experienced in the other eye,
you should see your ophthalmologist
again with the onset
of new flashes or floaters as you
could be having a PVD in this
eye.
Is there any treatment
for flashes and floaters?
Flashes and floaters are usually
just annoying, not harmful.
However, they can be signs
of serious problems (like a
tear on the retina) and, for this
reason, must not be ignored.
For most people, treatment is not
necessary. Floaters and flashes
usually subside over time, causing
no permanent deterioration
to vision.
Living Healthy
Enjoying a Guilt-Free Holiday Dinner
Adhering to a diet on special
occasions has always proved challenging
for Roy DeGrandpre. He
was enthused when he joined New
England Fat Loss (NEFL) on October
1, 2015. However, Thanksgiving
Day loomed in the near future.
When the big day arrived, the 54
year-old had already lost 43 pounds
and gratefully approached the
event with a totally new outlook.
“In the past, every time I’ve dieted,
I’ve dreaded the holidays,”
DeGrandpre said. “The holidays
are about great family, great food
and letting go, but this year was
completely different. When I woke
up on Thanksgiving, I told myself
I was not going to go overboard,
but if I saw something I wanted, I
was going to try it and enjoy every
bite.”
Armed with a successful diet
plan and a personal nutritional
menu from NEFL, DeGrandpre
allowed himself to enjoy a truly
satisfying Thanksgiving knowing
he had a clear direction for the day
after.
“The difference this time was
that I had full and complete confidence
that starting the next day, I
could just follow the program again
and very shortly, I would be right
back to my Thanksgiving morning
weight,” DeGrandpre said. “There
was absolutely no doubt in my
mind that I would accomplish that.
It took me only two days.”
At press time, DeGrandpre had
lost an impressive 54 pounds just
six weeks into the program. In addition
to the weight loss he was also
experiencing other physical benefits.
For example, now carrying a
lot less weight, he only requires 20
percent of his original insulin dosage
to manage his diabetes. He also
is experiencing quite an increase in
stamina.
“I have more energy than I feel
I have had in years, as far back as I
can remember,” DeGrandpre said.
“A lot of that is because even when
I was thinner and younger, I still
wasn’t eating healthy. Anyone who
is diabetic should be calling right
away because your energy and
health will benefit greatly.”
DeGrandpre did all the work,
but also credits the support and
guidance from the NEFL staff. The
hour’s commute to the Newton office
from his Amherst, NH home
required additional commitment,
but the effort was well worth the result.
His personal interaction with
the staff who he described as available,
encouraging, friendly and
knowledgeable, and with Dr. Johns
who he would text with daily, made
him feel like his weight loss was a
successful team effort!
abilities came to Encore to
perform their exams in front of
adjudicators who traveled from
across Canada in order to administer
the assessments. In addition
to academic assessments in
music theory, harmony, analysis
practical assessments on their instrument
of choice. Instruments
represented included piano,
voice, classical guitar, violin, and
viola.
Medway Business
Council to Discuss
New Laws
Presents Compliance Review
of Sick Time, ACA and New
Overtime Laws Nov. 9
On December 1, 2016,
a new “white collar” Overtime
Law goes into effect.
In addition, businesses also
need to comply with a variety
of other workforce
laws including Massachusetts
Sick Time Law (implemented
in July 2015) and the
Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Knowing that it can be
a challenge for businesses
to keep on top of changing
laws and what they need to
do to comply, the Medway
Business Council is hosting
a free review of the laws on
November 9, from 5-7 p.m.,
at Charles River Bank, 70
Main Street in Medway,
who is graciously sponsoring
this event. The meeting
is OPEN TO ALL AREA
Early Voting Comes
to Massachusetts
We are excited to announce
that all registered voters will be
able to vote before Election Day
for the first time ever in Massachusetts.
Early voting began on
October 24th and will continue
through November 4, 2016. Absentee
voting will also be available
for registered voters who
qualify.
Whether you choose to take
advantage of early voting, absentee
voting, or voting on Election
Day, the first step is making
certain you are registered. To
see if you are registered to vote
and/or to find information on
how to register to vote, please
visit the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s
website: www.sec.
state.ma.us/ele. If you are not
registered, you may do so online
by visiting: www.RegisterToVoteMa.com.
You need a license or
an I.D. issued by the Registry of
Motor Vehicles to apply on line.
To be eligible to vote in the
November 8th State Election,
you MUST have registered to
vote by Wednesday, October 19,
2016.
Early voting may be done in
person or by mail. In Millis, early
New England
voting may be done in person at
900 Main Street during regular
business hours.
Registered voters may also
request an early voting ballot
through the mail. Simply fill
out an application and mail it to
Millis, MA 02054. The application
For the first time in Massachusetts,
the first choice all voters will
Ross Announces DEP
Grants for Communities
State Senator Richard Ross
is pleased to announce that the
Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection (Mass-
DEP) has recently awarded municipal/regional
grants under its
Sustainable Material Recovery
Program (SMRP) to 11 cities and
towns in the Norfolk, Bristol and
Middlesex District. The towns
represented by Senator Ross
that have received grant awards
include Franklin, Millis, Natick,
Needham, Norfolk, North Attleboro,
Plainville, Sherborn, Wayland,
Wellesley and Wrentham.
Created under the Green
Communities Act, the SMRP allocates
a portion of the proceeds
from the sale of Waste Energy
Certificates to recycling programs
approved by the MassDEP. Municipalities
are awarded grants for
recycling, composting and reuse
and source reduction activities
that help divert municipal solid
waste and household waste from
disposal.
“The process of responsibly
managing solid waste is not only
the responsibility of us as citizens,
but is necessary for a healthy and
green community environment,”
said Senator Ross. “I am pleased
that my district is actively taking
part in various environmental
protection procedures.”
Passport Photo Requirements Changing November 1
AAA Travel is reminding
travelers of a change announced
by the U.S. State Department.
Beginning November 1, travelers
must remove their eyeglasses
when having passport photos
taken. Travelers who have photos
where they are wearing eyeglasses
in existing passports will
not be required to obtain new
passports.
The State Department says
that in 2015, more than 200,000
passport customers submitted
poor quality photos which
couldn’t be accepted. The main
reason involved eyeglasses, which
can cause glare on the lens, create
shadows on faces or block a
portion of the eyes.
The agency is hoping that
new passport photos taken without
eyeglasses mean fewer delays
in the application process and
may help travelers move more
quickly through U.S. ports of
entry. Travelers may wear glasses
if they have a medical issue, and
can submit documentation along
with their application.
Since 1976
Senator Richard Ross has been
Leader, Senator Bruce Tarr, to the
Special Commission on Local and
improve these resources for citizens
Millis-Castricum Exchange Program 2016
By Madeline Pudelka & Elina
Tavarez, MHS Class of 2019
On September 16th, Millis
High School welcomed eleven
exchange students from the Netherlands
for one week. The students
had travelled eight hours from
a school outside of Amsterdam
to see what it is like to be a high
schooler in the United States. Each
student from the Netherlands was
paired with someone from the
United States, adding up to 22 kids
involved in the program.
The host students travelled to
Boston on September 16 to welcome
the Dutch students and later
took them to see their first American
football game. The following
day, students met at the school
for some bonding activities and
a cookout. The students also met
with Congressman Joseph Kennedy
on Saturday. For the first
few days of the school week, the
Dutch students shadowed American
students during classes and
participated in different activities
that their host students were involved
in.
Host families also had the opportunity
to show the Dutch
students some quintessential
American activities, such as apple
picking or going to a drive-in
Fisher House Boston cared for Retired Marine sergeant John Peck and his fiancé as John
recovered from his double arm transplant this past summer. John’s story was featured on CBS
on October 5, 2016.
The Fisher House is a home away from home where our military families can stay while a loved
one is receiving in house treatment at one of our medical centers. Any veteran or active military
personnel, wartime or peacetime, is eligible to stay at the Fisher House. These homes are built
on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. The homes enable family members to
be close to loved ones at the most stressful times. There is at least one Fisher House at every
major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with
the comforts of home in a supportive environment. There is NO Charge for any family to stay at
a Fisher House.
Fisher House Boston was the 46th Fisher House to be built in the country. They recognize not
only the special sacrifices made by our men and women who serve in uniform, but also their
loved ones. The Millis Lions and Leos are proud to assist The Fisher House. We hope to display
1000 Flags at the Town Hall commemorating our Veterans service. Please help support these
men and women who have sacrificed so much by buying a flag in honor of, or in memory of, a
loved one. Fisher House is a Four Star Charity, with an A+ rating.
RMV Guidebook
Available to
New Drivers
and Families
State Senator Richard Ross
would like to announce that
the Massachusetts Registry
of Motor Vehicles (RMV) recently
released a new guidebook
to optimize the 40 hours
of supervised driving that teens
are required to complete under
parental supervision before receiving
their license.
“Parents with teens who
possess a Learner’s Permit will
now have access to The Parent’s
Supervised Driving Program. This
guide is a useful tool that will
improve safety and the driving
experience for teens learning
how to drive and their families,”
said Senator Ross.
The Parent’s Supervised Driving
Program is of no cost to families
or taxpayers. The guide will be
mailed to the parents/guardians
of all Learner’s Permit
recipients within two to three
weeks after a teen receiving
his/her permit. The program
contains information and lessons
on driving basics, parental
pointers, and licensing qualifications
that are helpful to parents
of new drivers.
Millis-Hopedale Grid Captain
Crepeau Overcomes Injury, Leads in Classy Fashion
By KEN HAMWEY
Despite not playing his junior year due to injury, Gerry Crepeau
was selected captain of his Millis Hopedale football team this year,
impressing teammates with his dedication, leadership, hard work
and faith.
It’s unusual for a football
player to miss an entire season,
then be chosen as a captain.
Hopedale’s Gerry Crepeau,
who tore the anterior cruciate
ligament in his left knee playing
varsity lacrosse, missed his entire
junior year of football.
He may have been absent on
the gridiron, but he was very visible
on the sidelines for game day.
He also attended all practices,
team meetings, and film sessions.
His commitment and devotion
to the Millis-Hopedale program
didn’t go unnoticed by his teammates.
When it came time to
choose captains for the 2016 season,
Crepeau was selected.
“I was honored and surprised,’’
he said. “We have so
many good players and good
leaders. To be chosen as a captain
was very humbling, because
I didn’t play one snap as a junior.’’
The 5-foot-10, 205-pound
Crepeau seemed like he was well
on his way to becoming an allstar
lineman when he took over
as a starting left tackle halfway
through his soph season. His first
start was dynamic. “I did well in
a big win,’’ he recalled. “We were
playing Dover-Sherborn and I
blocked effectively and opened
some holes. Two of our touchdowns
were run off left tackle.’’
Crepeau started in Millis-
Hopedale’s loss to Cohasset in
the Sectional final in 2014 but
that contest was his last competitive
outing for awhile. Playing
defense in a lacrosse match
against St. Bernard’s, he stepped
awkwardly and his knee buckled.
“I just took a bad step, and
my knee gave out,’’ he said. “I
remember how sharp the pain
was. I saw an orthopedic doctor
and an MRI showed a torn ACL.
Remember Last Winter?
I had surgery a month later.’’
Crepeau’s rehab lasted 12
months before he felt comfortable.
After a brief time on
crutches and wearing a brace, he
endured some long, hard months
of physical therapy. Weightlifting,
range of motion exercises and
running consumed much of his
time. He was disappointed but he
never was down and out.
“I felt badly that I couldn’t
contribute,’’ Crepeau said. “A
few times, I questioned why the
injury occurred, but I got over it,
realizing that if I stayed positive,
I’d return to football quicker. My
main goal was to play my senior
year.’’
Mission accomplished.
Crepeau now starts at right
guard on offense and he also
competes at defensive tackle.
His coach, Dana Olson, is a big
fan of Crepeau’s work ethic and
ability. “Gerry isn’t flashy,’’ Olson
said. “He’s a lunch-pail type of
kid who gets the job done. His
technical skills are very good, he’s
smart and he’s a quality leader.’’
Helping Millis-Hopedale
compile a 4-2 record at Local
Town Pages deadline, Crepeau
relies on a variety of key attributes
that make him extremely
dependable. “My strengths are
quickness, my work ethic, runblocking
and technical skills —
like the proper footwork and
hand placement,’’ he noted. On
defense, I rely on speed, lateral
movement and pursuit. Mental
toughness and knowing my assignments
precisely can improve
my play at guard, and getting
stronger and being able to read
and react are areas where I can
be better on defense. I always try
to be aggressive, which can offset
any deficiency.’’
One of Crepeau’s team
goals — winning the Tri Valley
League Small Division crown —
is close to being realized. He’s
also focused on getting past the
Sectional final. “We’ve lost three
straight years in the Sectional
final,’’ he said. “We can get to
the Super Bowl and we can win
it. That goal is realistic because
we’ve got talent. We just can’t get
overconfident.’’
Crepeau is also bullish on the
Mohawks other captains — linebacker
Jack Moriarity, two-way
lineman Dan Fallon and wideout/defensive
back P.J. Adams.
“They work hard, they’re tough,
they know how to finish plays
and how to lead,’’ Crepeau emphasized.
“We all try to be role
models for younger players by
doing the right thing.’’
Crepeau also has high praise
for Olson. “He knows the game
and he’s a terrific motivator,’’
Crepeau said. “He stresses work
ethic, technique and physical
toughness. He’s pushed me to be
a better player.’’
Vice president of the National
Honor Society, Crepeau is a
straight-A student who plans on
majoring in finance at a college
like Northeastern or Bryant. As
for football at the intercollegiate
level, he’s “open-minded’’ about
his future.
One thing he’s sure of, however,
is his competitive philosophy.
He plays to win, to go all
out in reaching his potential and
to enjoy whatever sport he’s involved
in. Crepeau has competed
in track for four seasons in the
shot put, and he’s had two seasons
of lacrosse where he’s also
been a captain.
“Sports teach real-life lessons,’’
Crepeau noted. “You
learn leadership and the value
of teamwork. Athletics played a
role in my rehab. Sports teach
you how to overcome adversity
and bounce back.
Crepeau, who is a youth
ministry leader at Sacred Heart
Church in Hopedale, also credits
strong faith for his successful
return. “It plays a big role,’’ he
said. “When you have faith, it
helps you to react positively to
difficult situations.’’
Gerry Crepeau isn’t a captain
because he’s popular. He’s a captain
for all the right reasons.
Cheerleader Turned Player -
Kizzy Richardson Crosses the Gender Divide in Medway JV Football
Growing up, Kismet (Kizzy)
Richardson always dreamed
about playing football, but being
a girl, never thought about pursuing
it. That is, until her mother
brought it to her attention.
“She had started to take part
in cheerleading, but I soon began
to notice that she wasn’t all that
engaged in it, but seemed to be
paying more attention to the football
team that was practicing,”
her mother Cheryl Richardson
said. “So the next year, when she
would allow me to play football,”
she said. “My dad’s a huge
(Green Bay) Packers fan having
grown up in Wisconsin, and
since I was born there, I feel like
I should root for my home team
too.”
Richardson and her father
would watch football together,
and both were very competitive;
this is where the love of football
began to grow. In Killingly, she
would begin her football career
as a quarterback, but soon found
the stepping stone for football
to be allowed in the Richardson
household.
“Here, there were weight restrictions,
so she played with her
same size, but come her freshman
year in high school, she
really wanted to try out for the
#22 Pave the way
for the greatness
of others.
team,” her mother said. “She
loved the sport so much that
Kizzy Richardson feels more comfortable on the the football field than
on the sidelines, and she’s thrilled to be playing for Medway’s JV team.
was nine years old I asked her if
she’d rather play football.”
Richardson immediately took
her mother’s suggestion and
began playing for the Killingly
Brookline Midgets in Connecticut,
where they lived at the time,
a program similar to Pop Warner
in this area.
“I love the game and never
crossed my mind that my parents
herself playing safety on the defensive
side of the ball. After
moving to Medway in the eighth
grade, she continued to play
safety, but her freshman coach
(Broder) saw a quickness and
ability in her, so he moved her to
cornerback.
Being the oldest of four siblings
(two brothers and a sister)
who all play football, Kizzy was
when she came to us we couldn’t
say no. My husband and I had
raised our children to go after
their dreams; we couldn’t stand
in her way now.”
Tryouts for the high school
team began much before school
would begin so Richardson
would get to know her teammates
before they were her classmates.
“I was welcomed with open
arms by the boys on the team.
They realized that just because I
was a girls didn’t mean I couldn’t
play the game; once they knew I
meant business on the field, they
had my back,” she said. “By the
time school eventually got underway,
it was the team that was
showing me around the school.”
However, with a much smaller
stature than the rest of her teammates,
Richardson’s mother was
not all that concerned with her
daughter’s health on the field.
“Of course I was worried, but
Kizzy was a flyer in cheerleading,”
she said. “I found it much
harder to watch her get thrown
around through the air as a
cheerleader than run around on
Kizzy has similar feelings.
“While playing football, I have
complete control of the situation,
and I have comfort in knowing
that,” she said. “As a flyer
in cheerleading, I was thrown
through the air and hoped that
my teammates would catch me
before I hit the ground.”
As a sophomore at Medway
High School, Richardson is playing
cornerback for the Junior
Varsity team and although a female,
she fits right in with the rest
of the team, playing just as physical
as they do.
JV Defensive Coordinator
Farren Davis got to know what
Richardson was like before seeing
her at tryouts.
“I run the summer strength
and conditioning program for
the high school, so I got to work
with Kismet before the season.
That was a huge advantage seeing
the work that she put in and
the pride she took in it,” Davis
said. “Besides her height and
weight, she’s right there with the
rest of the team.”
According to Davis, Richardson
sees a lot of action on the
field; she’s a very consistent and
one of the squad’s top corners
and knows the game and its coverages.
Other than being on the
smaller side, she’s got all the tools
to be a top corner in the Tri-Valley
League.
“I think other teams definitely
come after me, but I think it’s
more strategic than anything
else,” Richardson said. “They
would send their super tall receivers
my way hoping to succeed in
a big way, but when I hold my
own at 5’2” they think twice
about throwing my way again.”
With still two years of eligibility
left to play football for the
high school, Richardson would
love nothing more than to make
the varsity team.
“I know that I’m never going
to be playing football in college,
but my goal is to make the varsity
team before I graduate,” she said.
“If I never do get to the varsity
team, I’ll be fine with that; the jv
and varsity practice together with
the only difference being the actual
games; so I’m kind of on the
varsity team.”
Coach Davis knows she has
the ability and the knowledge to
play on the varsity, she just needs
the size.
“She knows the game and
what has to be done, no doubt
about it,” Davis said. “The only
thing holding her back is her
height. She’s fast and pays attention
to details, and sometimes we
forget that we have a her on our
team. The only thing that would
hold her back from getting to the
varsity team would be a lack of
growth.”
At this point in her life, Richardson
has adjusted her skill set
so that the opposition’s athletes
don’t make her look foolish on
the field.
“I may be smaller, but my
speed helps to stay with them,”
she said. “I just watch their hips
and legs and know where they
are going from there. Once I
know their movement, I take out
their legs, no matter how much
taller you are, you can’t run without
your legs.”
Being able to run onto the
field as a varsity Mustang football
player may be her ultimate goal
as far as football is concerned,
but she’s already accomplished
much more than she probably
ever thought that she would.
“It’s amazing that my mother
would allow me to play football.
I should have seen it growing up
in the things she would say, but
since there were no weight restrictions
I knew I couldn’t play,”
she said. “If you told the younger
me that as a sophomore I’d be
playing high school football, I’d
say you were a liar, but here we
are.”
WRITTEN TO LAINA KAPLAN FROM A MEDWAY CLIENT:
Working with Laina was a wonderful experience. She is very
knowledgeable in all aspects of buying and selling a home
and really goes above and beyond offering home staging
and professional photography at no additional fee. Although
she has many clients we sure felt like we were the only ones.
Laina came to every meeting, inspection, showing and even
continued communicating with us when she on her own
summer vacation. She is professional, laid back and so easy
to work with. We were able to buy our new house and sell our
old one in the span of about three months. We feel truly lucky
to have worked with such a great agent. Thank You Laina!!!!
