Library Revamps Website
Do you use our public library? Norwood’s
Morrill Memorial Library is part of the Minuteman
network which allows all library card holders
to borrow across the association. In addition to
books, audiobooks, eBooks and audio eBooks, you
have access to music, movies, technology assistance
and many other products and services.
“Over the last ten-plus years, libraries have
been trying to figure out how to remain relevant
to the younger generations who aren’t using their
public libraries and who are, instead, going to
streaming devices and on-line book buying sites.”
Library Director Charlotte Cannelli said.
Norwood’s Morrill Memorial Library has addressed
that challenge by adding programs that
have attracted not only more young people, but all
generations. One of the areas of great improvement
is their new website, which was rolled out in
August.
According to Technology Librarian Allison
Palmgren, the previous website was more than
10 years old and was not conducive to mobile use.
And, while most of the information that people
needed existed on the old site, it was not always
easy to find and it was not accessible to people who
used tablets and smart phones.
“Our web presence is geared to the future,”
Palmgren said.
Palmgren explained that there is a decreasing
number of people who are using their computers
to access information and a huge percentage are
assessing the website through their mobile devices.
website, which can be prohibitively expensive,
Norwood Kicks Off
The Holiday Season!
What could be the perfect
ending of a long weekend of delicious
leftovers and mounds of
new shopping lists? Norwood's
Holiday Extravaganza, of course!
Each year, on Thanksgiving
weekend, the Town Common
bustles with holiday activity in
one of Norwood's favorite annual
traditions, The Holiday Extravaganza!
The fun-filled (and FREE)
family event will
be held on Sunday,
November 27, from
1:30-4:30 p.m. The
afternoon will include
hayrides, entertainment,
arts &
crafts, holiday readings,
face painting,
barnyard animals,
a parade, music,
tree lighting, and
of course, a special
visit from the jolly
old man himself!
For new Norwood
residents not
familiar with the event, this day is
a must attend. It is a great way to
end the holiday weekend and will
surely turn into a yearly family
outing!
Plan that holiday shopping
and decorating earlier in the
weekend and reserve this Sunday
for a community celebration the
entire family will enjoy and remember
for years to come!
Palmgren and her assistant, Sam
Simas, tackled the task. They spent
several months evaluating the old
site trying to determine areas library
patrons were using on the
old site and what service information
the library needed to retain or
expand upon. They already knew
that mobile users could not use
the site because it was the number
one complaint they received, so
that area definitely needed to be
addressed. They also concluded
that quick links would be more
effective, that the font used on the
old site was too small, and they
needed to make it easier to find
core services.
Take a Chance at the
Norwood VFW Meat Raffle!
Norwood, hosts a Meat Raffle
will be held on November
5, 12, & 19.
is only $2 and 10 drawings
are conducted each Saturday.
of the prizes include: sirloin
more. The drawings also include
50/50 money raffles.
Palmgren said they streamlined
a lot of things from the old website,
deleted redundancy and labeled
things more intuitively. She
said the library policies were not
on-line and, while they aren’t used
much, they needed to be there.
She says that the site is now more
searchable and it is easier to find
what you want.
The major improvement,
however, is that the site is mobileresponsive,
no matter what size
device you are using. There is also
a Minuteman mobile app that
“puts the library in your pocket.”
Using the app, you can search
the catalog and place holds on or
renew items; explore digital content
24/7; review thousands of
eBooks, stream movies, read digital
magazines, and premium subscription
resources, obtain library
event information, and, you can
use your device as a digital library
card.
Palmgren stated that site statistics
show approximately 1500
people visit the website each day.
“We’ve received very positive
feedback, especially from those
who say ‘I never knew x or y was
offered before,’ so we’re incredibly
pleased about that,” Palmgren
said.
While the new website is a
portal to easy use of the library,
it does not leave non-computer
or non-device users behind. They
still get the high level of services
they always had – but now they
have more options from which to
choose.
come to one of the monthly
meetings which are held on
Norwood Police Beat
by Renee Plant
The Norwood Police Department
is committed to providing
public safety and service to
residents and visitors in the community.
Here are a few recent
highlights and accomplishments
from the local department.
An Accredited Agency
On September 14, the Norwood
Police Department became
fully accredited after a two-year
effort led by Sergeant Christopher
Padden and overseen by Deputy
Chief Peter Kelly. The process of
becoming an accredited agency
involved rewriting and implementing
approximately 80 policies.
Topics ranged from use of force,
evidence management, booking
procedures and more.
Last year, the department became
certified, which Chief William
G. Brooks III said was an
intermediary step in the process.
“Not only am I proud of Sergeant
Padden’s work, but I appreciate
the overwhelming support I
received from the department,”
Chief Brooks said. “This was a lot
of work for all of us.”
Only approximately 50 municipal
police departments in the state
are accredited. The department’s
certification is good for three years,
and must be renewed every three
years. The award followed a unanimous
vote by the Massachusetts
Police Accreditation Commission,
and a plaque attesting to the Department's
accomplishment now
hangs at Police Headquarters.
Substance Abuse
Treatment
The Norwood Police Department
has a long history of assisting
in finding treatment for those
struggling with substance abuse.
When Chief Brooks returned
to the department in 2012, he issued
a strategy on how to address
opiate use, and one aspect of that
strategy was making treatment option
resources readily available.
On the department’s website,
users can click the “drug control”
tab and select “find treatment”
to take steps toward getting help.
The department strives to ensure
the community has access to resources
that help those who are
struggling with addiction, and reminds
residents the police station
is open 24/7 to assist individuals
in need.
Retirements
Officer Anthony Copponi and
Detective David Eysie have retired
from the force after each serving
approximately 30 years in law enforcement.
While Brooks said he has
mixed emotions when officers retire
from the force, he notes Copponi
and Eysie have “earned their
retirements.”
“Officer Copponi served in
uniform his entire career, much
of it as a motorcycle officer, and
Detective Eysie was our primary
narcotics investigator and did a
fabulous job,” Chief Brooks said.
“They have both been in touch
with me since they retired, and I
am happy to report they are both
doing well.
It’s More
Than Just a Click or A Pop!!!
TMJ is a condition characterized
by pain in the jaw joint and
surrounding tissues accompanied
by a decrease in the range of
motion of the joint itself. There
may be clicking or popping and
a noticeable swing of the lower
joint. Currently more than 12%
of American’s suffer from TMJ
symptoms.
There are many causes of
TMJ. These include dental procedures,
autoimmune disease,
biting into a large sandwich or
bagel, injuries to the jaw area and
infection. Once the biomechanics
of the joint has been altered,
the function becomes affected
and the pain ensues. Traditional
treatments include pain medication,
muscle relaxers and dental
appliances. These are effective
resources for some, but not for all,
especially long term.
Stephanie P. suffered from
TMJ pain for over two years
since the removal of her braces.
Chewing certain foods would aggravate
her jaw and intensify her
pain. In the beginning, she felt she
could handle problem on her own
by giving up chewing gum, eating
oversized sandwiches, chewy
meats and certain fruits. However,
she noticed that over time, just
yawning and even singing, could
cause an exacerbation. She was
becoming disillusioned with the
idea that she could fix this on her
own and decided to call The Holistic
Center at Bristol Square and
made an appointment with Dr.
Goldstein.
Upon exam, Dr. Goldstein noticed
the swing shift in Stephanie’s
jaw as she both opened and closed
her mouth, indicating a dysfunction
in the biomechanics of her
TMJ. After several weeks of treatment,
the clicking and popping
were gone and the swing in her
jaw was stabilized. She no longer
suffers from the TMJ pain and
also noticed that the headaches
she thought were unrelated had
gone away as well.
Art Association Small
Works Show and Sale
Remember last December when you promised yourself that next year you’d start your
holiday shopping early?
Well, here it is November, and the Norwood Art Association (NAA) would like to help
you do just that with their Holiday Small Works Show and Sale.
This free event will take place at Custom Art Framing, 45 Central St., in Norwood, and
will begin with a reception featuring hors d’oeuvres and desserts on Friday, November 11,
7-9 p.m., and Saturday, November 12, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
“This is the perfect place to find a gift that’s truly one of a kind,” NAA President Jean
Hall said. “We’re expecting dozens of beautiful paintings, drawings, and photographs, all
framed and ready to hang. And all of the works will be 8 X 10 inches or smaller, excluding
mat and frame – easy to wrap and just the right size for that bare spot in a friend or family
member’s house, apartment, dorm room, or office – or your own home.”
The holiday show also welcomes people who are “just browsing,” and those who would
like to chat with the artists or are interested in getting involved in the local arts scene. For
more information or directions, call Custom Art Framing at 781-762-3300. Or visit the
Norwood Art Association website at NorwoodArtAssociation.com or Facebook page.
A Better Community
is Up to Us!
Pass it on!
Regardless of the results of the elections in November,
or maybe in spite of them, we, the people, have the
power to change the world!
In an era of partisanship, anger and hatred, perhaps
we have all forgotten that individually and collectively we
form our society by our actions.
That is the message conveyed in a series of
public service ads scheduled to begin running
this week on some of the channels on Norwood
Light Broadband TV.
The Foundation for Better Living’s “Pass It On” campaign
has produced a number of 30 second ads reminding
us of how our actions and reactions have a ripple effect,
for better or worse, on our community.
Hopefully these reminders of how we can effect change
in our society through individual acts of kindness, civility
and graciousness will enlighten us and our children and
leave them a better society to live in than it sometimes is
today!
Pass it on!
NATURE CALLS - Cranberries – A Native American Super Food
By Amy Beaumont
Ahhhh - Thanksgiving is just
around the corner, and cranberry
sauce is part of a traditional New
England feast for many. There are
so many fantastic recipes that result
in delicious cranberry sauces.
But beyond Thanksgiving and the
cranberry sauce that makes it to
most tables, the nutritional blast
that these little fruits put out is
worth paying attention to.
Many of us are aware of the
association between cranberries
and good bladder health, but few
of us know that it is whole cranberries
in their raw form is what
does the trick. While cranberry
sauce will retain some nutritional
rule of thumb when it comes to
food; once you cook it, you kill it
– meaning, much of what makes
a food healthy is destroyed once
processed or cooked. The result is
nutritionally devoid foods – most
of us ‘kill’ our food every day just
by cooking it. Cranberries are
among the superior class of super
foods which are rich in plant antioxidants
and cancer fighting
phytochemcials called proanthocyanadins
(PACs). It is these little
guys that have the unique ability to
attach themselves to the lining of
the bladder and urinary tract, thus
inhibiting the growth of bacteria.
Our ancestors knew well the benefits
of cranberries, and used them
to treat such infections. Look past
cranberry juice however, for your
bladder health – most are sugar
again ‘kills’ the good stuff. Beyond
the bladder are six more huge reasons
activity: every single one of
us are subject to oxidative stress
(pollution) – the deep red color of
these little fruits reminds us that
deeply colored foods protect our
DNA from such damage.
Stomach health: PACs also
prevent the attachment of bacteria
in the stomach lining (some
stomach ulcers are related to the
overgrowth of the bacteria Heliobacter
pylori).
Cancer fighting activity: cranberries
contain epicatechins, quercitin,
and ursolic acid – all are
potent cancer fighting agents.
Liver and cellular detoxification:
the plant chemicals in cranberries
support detoxification of
the liver.
Promote normal anti-inflammatory
function: That deep red
color reminds us again of quercitin,
which fights cancer. Altering
the environment of cancer cells
with the right foods is a potent
strategy.
There are those among us who
simply don’t care for the taste of
whole cranberries – I’m one of
them. But, dried cranberries run
a close second to the fresh ones in
terms of nutritional potency. Take
a handful of these babies and toss
them into your blender as part of
a smoothie and you’re on your
way. We really have only scratched
the nutritional surface of the ol’
cranberry. The countless studies
on these now in-season fruits all
point to the same thing – substantial
health benefits. In fact, over
the past five years, scientists have
discovered an increasing amount
of mechanisms that explain the
anti-cancer properties of cranberries.
So once the Thanksgiving holiday
rushes past us and we make
our way back into the local markets,
invest in your health with the
almighty berry – only next time
make it whole, raw cranberries.
Your body will thank you for it.
Physical Therapy Tips
on How to Sleep Better with the Right Bed and Pillows
Contributed by John Vacovec,
Physical Therapist and
CEO of Physical Therapy
and Sports Rehab, Inc.
For many people, getting a
good night’s sleep could be as
easy as changing their pillow and
mattress. What many individuals
don’t know is that sleeping on
the wrong mattress or pillow can
result in muscle spasms, strains
and ligament damage – even
while sleeping.
Wakefulness disorders have
been recognized as a serious problem,
with up to 70 million adults
being affected. A lack of restful
and restorative sleep has been
cited as the cause of accidents in
vehicles, industrial settings and the
medical field.
Continual lack of sleep can
be linked to physical and mental
effects. The wrong mattress and
pillow can transform a minor
joint, muscle or ligament problem
into a chronic condition.
Individuals are prone to chronic
diseases that include obesity and
high blood pressure. They may
also have difficulty with memory
and concentration, are less productive
at work, and have lower
grades in educational pursuits.
Bedding Essentials
The function of a pillow or
mattress is to provide support
for the resting body. The firmest
mattress isn’t always the best solution.
There’s no industry wide
standard! Couples should always
choose a mattress together or
consider an adjustable bed that
accommodates the needs of each
sleeper. Pillows should support the
head and neck in the same position
as if the person was standing
upright. A poor pillow will cause
neck, back and shoulder pain as
easily as a bad mattress.
A Prescription for Sleep
Before purchasing a mattress
or pillow, consult with one of our
physical therapists. Pillows should
reflect the preferred sleep position
of the individual, and our therapists
can show people what to
look for that accommodates their
height, weight and sleep positions.
Therapists can provide information
on sleep positions that
are conducive to restful sleep and
maintain proper positioning of the
spine and neck. Our therapist will
also teach individuals how to recognize
when a pillow or mattress
requires replacing.
With the assistance of our
physical therapists, anyone can obtain
the restful, pain free sleep they
need. If you need physical therapy,
call us directly. Physical Therapy
Enjoying a Guilt-Free Holiday
Dinner
Adhering to a diet on special occasions has always
proved challenging for Roy DeGrandpre. He
was enthused when he joined New England Fat Loss
(NEFL) on October 1, 2015. However, Thanksgiving
Day loomed in the near future. When the big day
arrived, the 54 year-old had already lost 43 pounds
and gratefully approached the event with a totally
new outlook.
"In the past, every time I've dieted, I've dreaded
the holidays," DeGrandpre said. "The holidays are
about great family, great food and letting go, but this
year was completely different. When I woke up on
Thanksgiving, I told myself I was not going to go
overboard, but if I saw something I wanted, I was
going to try it and enjoy every bite."
Armed with a successful diet plan and a personal
nutritional menu from NEFL, DeGrandpre allowed
himself to enjoy a truly satisfying Thanksgiving
knowing he had a clear direction for the day after.
"The difference this time was that I had full and
complete confidence that starting the next day, I
could just follow the program again and very shortly,
I would be right back to my Thanksgiving morning
weight," DeGrandpre said. "There was absolutely no
doubt in my mind that I would accomplish that. It
took me only two days."
At press time, DeGrandpre had lost an impressive
54 pounds just six weeks into the program. In addition
to the weight loss he was also experiencing other
physical benefits. For example, now carrying a lot less
weight, he only requires 20 percent of his original insulin
dosage to manage his diabetes. He also is experiencing
quite an increase in stamina.
"I have more energy than I feel I have had in
years, as far back as I can remember," DeGrandpre
said. "A lot of that is because even when I was thinner
and younger, I still wasn't eating healthy. Anyone who
is diabetic should be calling right away because your
energy and health will benefit greatly."
DeGrandpre did all the work, but also credits
the support and guidance from the NEFL staff. The
hour's commute to the Newton office from his Amherst,
NH home required additional commitment,
but the effort was well worth the result. His personal
interaction with the staff who he described as available,
encouraging, friendly and knowledgeable, and
with Dr. Johns who he would text with daily, made
him feel like his weight loss was a successful team effort!
Luminary Night Shines Again on the Town Common
by Bella Caggiano
The Circle of Hope Foundation's
Enchanting Luminary Night
will be held on Saturday, December
3 (rain date, Sunday, December
4), on Norwood's Town
Common. Luminaries will be lit
at 5 p.m. and residents are invited
to the Gazebo in commemoration
of loved ones and to support Norwood's
supportive community.
For the past 15 years, hundreds
of luminaries have radiated the
Town Common walkways in tribute
of lost loved ones. The luminary
bags are engraved with an
individual name, message, prayer
or date as a symbol of Life, Hope,
the Season or in Remembrance of
others.
"Every candle that is lit is helping
someone in Norwood," Circle
of Hope founder Lee Kennedy
said. "You don't know when you
light that candle who you are helping."
Each year, on the first weekend
of December, the Town Common
glows with the luminary
bags raising thousands of dollars
for the admirable volunteerrun
organization. The Circle of
Hope foundation was established
in 1998 in memory of Norwood
resident Michelle Kennedy, who
suffered from leukemia. Norwood
residents united during her battle,
many who did not even know her
personally. The Circle of Hope established
in her memory preserves
that community spirit by donating
fundraising proceeds to Norwood
families who need assistance due
to a catastrophic medical illness.
Luminary bags are $5 each and
can be purchased from the Norwood
Civic Center, Nahatan St.,
Murph's Place, on Broadway, any
foundation board member, by calling
Thrift Shop Annual
Christmas Sale
For the members of the Women’s
Community Committee, one
of the happiest and most anticipated
days of the year is the Saturday
after Thanksgiving. Why? It’s
the Thrift Shop’s Annual Christmas
Sale!
This year, the Thrift Shop, located
at 1091 Washington St., in
Norwood, will be magically transformed
into a winter wonderland
on November 26, at 9:30 a.m.-
12:30 p.m.
All year, a team of women
lovingly sort through the weekly
donations, cull out the Christmas
items and pack them away until
the sale. The sale features new
items, ornaments, decorations,
games, toys, holiday clothing,
tablecloths, tree skirts, dishes and
lots more!
The WCC, a volunteer nonprofit
organization, hopes that this
Every Day Should be Small Business Saturday
By Donna Lane
According to Wikipedia, Small
Business Saturday was conceived
and promoted by American Express
in 2010 to encourage holiday
shoppers to patronize small, local,
independent businesses. It has
become a tradition, and one we
should heartily embrace.
If you have not been shopping
in downtown Norwood recently,
you might want to give it a try. Despite
a few empty storefronts, there
are a number of vital businesses
just waiting to give you the personal
service that is missing at the
mall and on-line. In fact, there are
more than 100 shops within a 16
block radius that would welcome
your business.
Pretty is Pink recently opened its
second store in Norwood. Its original
store was established 12 years
ago in Franklin by Lori Rosenberg
“for a little taste of New York City
fashion in Massachusetts.” Lori’s
goal is to give women clothing that
makes them feel amazing. Any
woman on your gift list would welcome
a gift certificate to Pretty is
Pink. Or, perhaps you gals would
like to do some Christmas shopping
for yourselves.
Chelala Jewelers is a jewelry
and gift shop owned by Pascale and
Philippe Chelale, Norwood residents
for the past 27 years. They
have gift items starting at $20. Their
Wind & Fire expandable bangles,
which are labeled “eco-sustainable
jewelry,” are very popular with
the teen set – 13 and up – as are
the Rembrandt silver charms.
Part of the purchase price of the
Wind & Fire line goes to support
a number of
charities.
In addition
to
fine jewelry,
Chelala sells
Llardro,
Lenox classics,
Byer’s
carolers,
jewelry
boxes,
San Francisco
music
boxes, water
globes, snow
babies, wall
and mantle
clocks, Cape
Cod jewelry and Chamilia beads
and charms.
And who wouldn’t welcome a
gift certificate from Babel’s Paint &
Decorating? Whether it’s window
treatments, wall coverings or accessories
you’re looking for, or expert
guidance with color selection
or paint products, a visit to Babel’s
will provide you with the information
you need, along with lots of
eye candy.
If you have a sports enthusiast
on your list, Charles River Running
owned by Charlotte Walsh
should be on your list of places to
visit. The shop specializes in running
shoes, apparel and accessories
from Brooks, Asics, Saucony,
New Balance and Mizuno, Moving
Comfort, Balega, Nathan and
more. Charlotte does a complimentary
shoe fitting and gait analysis
with every shoe purchase and
offers a customer loyalty program.
You might also want to visit Day
Street Sports, a third-generation
Norwood business offering name
brand sporting goods for all major
sports.
You can find many practical
household tools and supplies at
True Value Hardware, a retailerowned
cooperative whose 5,000
members buy products together,
allowing them to compete with
larger stores like Home Depot and
Lowes. What sort of gifts can you
purchase
at a hardware
store?
If you have
a budding
gardener on
your list, a
gift of peat
pots, seed
starting mix
and a few
packets of
seeds or a
set of hand
tools will
surely bring
a smile to
the recipient.
Or perhaps
you want a gift for a birder
friend. From bird houses to bird
feeders and accessories to bird
baths and bird seed, True Value
has everything you need. If you
use your imagination and know the
hobbies or interests of the people
on your list, a hardware store can
be a treasure trove.
These shops are only a few of
the offerings in downtown Norwood.
There are also many choices
for health and beauty services including
hair stylists, nail salons,
massage therapy and skin care.
Norwood also has an abundance
of restaurants from breakfast,
coffee and sandwich shops to
American, pizza and pub offerings,
as well as Middle Eastern, Mediterranean,
Japanese, Chinese, Thai
and Italian cuisine. Perhaps a gift
certificate for services or food is the
answer for that person who has
“everything.” Or tickets to one of
the upcoming productions at the
Norwood Theater.
Whether you are looking for
someplace to eat, shop, or get
pampered, there are many goods
and services available to you downtown.
Small business owners pride
themselves on their personal service
to customers. We don’t get
that at the malls. And we certainly
don’t get it if we shop on-line.
But, one day of sales is not
going to sustain any business.
Small Business Saturday is a great
idea, but if we want to help our
downtown grow and thrive, we
need to patronize our small businesses
regularly. So, shop locally
and often, not just on Small Business
Saturday. It’s a win for them
and for us when we do!!
New Surgeries Propel
15% Growth in Norwood
Hospital Weight Loss
Program
Hospital prepares for new non-surgical approach
to weight loss
The Center for Weight Control
at Norwood Hospital, specializing in
weight-loss surgery, has helped more
than 2000 patients on their weight-loss
journeys. The nationally accredited Center
recently celebrated its first decade of
restoring health to those struggling with
obesity and maintaining weight loss.
The Center, led by Medical Director
and Bariatric Surgeon, Dr. Adam
Glasgow, takes a compassionate and
comprehensive team approach to each
patient’s experience. Throughout their
journeys, patients meet with multiple
clinicians, including mental health counselors
and dietitians, providing a coordinated
care approach.
Among the surgical procedures offered
is the Lap-Band, a surgically implanted
silicone ring around the upper
part of the stomach. This reduces the
capacity of the stomach, helping patients
to feel full sooner and eat less. A newer
surgery, Sleeve Gastrectomy, involves removing
part of the stomach to create a
narrow tube or “sleeve.” This gives patients
a greater sense of fullness allowing
them to eat less and lose weight.
“We have had great success with the
program,” says Adam Glasgow, Medical
Director of the Norwood Hospital
Center for Weight Control. “We are excited
to offer a new non-surgical option
to our patients, the Orbera Intragastric
balloon. The balloon, inserted temporarily,
takes up room in the stomach, helping
patient to lose weight quickly and get
on track with a healthier diet and fitness
program.”
The Norwood Hospital Center for
Weight Control offers free monthly information
seminars, as well as twice monthly
support groups. For more information,
Norwood Boys Soccer
by Christopher Tremblay
Last fall the Norwood boy’s
soccer team was only able to manage
three wins and a tie during the
regular season and then said goodbye
to 17 seniors to graduation six
months later. Things didn’t look
good for the Mustangs future.
Norwood brought in a new
coach in Ryan German this season
and senior Captain Adam
Gold believes it’s a good thing for
this year’s team of 10 seniors, 7 juniors,
3 sophomores and 1 freshman.
“Having a new coach who
comes from England and knows
the game of soccer is a plus,” said
the Mustang Captain. “Last year
we had a lot of athletes that played
other sports in addition to soccer,
but not a lot of soccer stars. This
season, I honestly believe that we
are better with players that have a
soccer base and have been playing
the game for some time; soccer
being their sport.”
The team’s captain and center
midfielder is looking to pass along
the new coach’s philosophy to his
teammates while on the field.
“Coach is always saying that
communication is important so
I try to let the guys know where
they should be at any given time,”
Gold said. “Myself, I’m a physical
but technical player that has
a long kick and takes a lot of our
free kicks. I just want to help the
team in any way I can.”
In addition to Gold, the Mustangs
have two vice-captains in
seniors Nick Girard and Stephen
Tribuna. Girard, a striker this year,
has been a center back his entire
soccer life, but knowing that the
squad really needed some offense
he was moved up on the field
under Gold’s recommendation.
“Nick’s extremely fast and we
were in need of some offense this
year if we wanted to be successful,”
Gold said. “It was a big adjustment
for him at first, but he’s
done fine so far; his speed is his attribute
which allows him to set up
his teammates.”
Tribuna is the team’s last line
of defense in the goal and according
to Gold has been one of the
main reasons why the Mustangs
have been able to stay close to
their opponents.
Norwood Sports
Pictured: Norwood taking on Framingham
“As a second-year starter, he’s
kept us in a lot of games with his
play,” the Norwood Captain said.
“He’s very loud and tells people
where to be as he sees the entire
field so well.”
Up front with Girard, Jose Osorto,
who saw limited action on
the varsity squad last fall, should
be the team’s go-to guy for offense.
“He’s probably our best offensive
player,” Gold said. “He’s
a selfish striker, but a good striker.
He likes to hold the ball a lot, but
good things usually happen when
he does.”
Defensively, the Mustangs play
four in the back with Andrew
Cronin in charge. According to
Gold, Cronin is one of Norwood’s
biggest players who has a very
physical game and can lock things
down in a split second.
As the season has unfolded,
the Mustangs have continued to
improved, but playing in the Bay
State Conference is never easy.
Norwood is more of a long ball
team where they’ll kick it up and
over the opposition’s defense and
allow their strikers to use their
speed to set things up.
“Early in the year, we had a
scrimmage were we were a total
mess and it wasn’t one of our
better performances,” Gold said.
“Then against Weymouth, they
held the ball for just about the
entire first half and we didn’t
allow a single shot and just shut
them down – it shows how we’ve
grown.”
If Norwood can continue to
provide that elite defensive play
against their opponents, keeping
them out of their half while limiting
their chances, who knows how
far the Mustangs can go this fall.
Norwood Sports
Norwood Field Hockey
by Christopher Tremblay
Last fall, the Norwood field
hockey team finished the regular
season with a 13-4-1 record and
was awarded a seventh seed in the
Division 1 South Massachusetts
Field Hockey Tournament. Although
the Mustangs were a frequent
visitor to the tournament, it
was not there best showing. Canton
upset Norwood 2-1 in the first
round and the Mustangs were sent
packing; their quickest exit in recent
years.
Having lost 12 seniors from last
year’s 13 win team, Coach Alison
Doliner is looking at a team with
only seven returning members
and a lot of first-time varsity athletes,
including three who made
the switch from soccer to field
hockey. Needless to say, Doliner
and her Mustangs have their work
cut out for them.
“The Bay State Conference is
super competitive and we know
that it’s not going to be easy,” the
Norwood Coach said. “We’ve set
our expectations high. If you settle
for a rebuilding year then you’re
setting the bar too low, which
would be a recipe for disaster.”
Looking to get the Mustangs
into the tournament once again
but with a different outcome will
be senior Tri-Captains Coley
Hayes (center mid and center
back), Cassidy Mahoney
(right wing) and Katie
Mulligan (left mid). Mulligan
unfortunately suffered
a foot injury and
has missed substantial
time to open the season
leaving the Mustangs vulnerable
on the left side.
“The left side is very
hard to play and Katie
does a fantastic job over
there; when she’s on the field she’s
always giving us consistent play,”
Doliner said.
Making the jump from the soccer
team to the field hockey team
are senior right midfielder Rachel
Noah and juniors Frankie Cevino
(midfield and defense) and Ally
Naumann (goalie). According
Pictured: photos from the Breast Cancer game
to their new coach, all three are
very athletic and have the instinct,
which makes it easy to teach them
the skills of the game.
Of the three, Naumann has
been the biggest surprise through
the team’s first 10 games this fall
despite never having played the
position before.
“Janelle Kelleher, our goalie
from last year, decided to forgo
playing field hockey this year and
focus on her ice hockey play,”
Doliner said. “Ally heard we were
losing our goalie and despite having
never played the position in
her life wanted to
take a shot at it.
Lucky for us she
has been a definite
surprise.”
Through the
first half of the
season, Neumann
has already registered
five shutouts,
which is remarkable
for someone who
has never played
the game before.
Freshman Coach
Emily Whitne, a
2009 Norwood
graduate and field
hockey goalie, has
been working with
Naumann in the
net giving her the
instruction she has
needed to be successful.
Sophomore
Bryn Garczynski,
who started every game for the
Mustangs last fall as a freshman,
has excelled in the mid field and
her speed and strength have allowed
her to cover a lot of ground.
Doliner also has a trio of freshmen
in starting center forward Allie
McDonough, left and right back
Noel Connelly and forward Julie
Salvaggio; the trio have shown
they have the ability to play the
game on the varsity level.“We
have a nice group of underclassmen
who are not only learning
the game, but are getting use to
the fast pace of varsity play,” the
Coach said. “These girls mixed in
with the returning players give us a
nice complement of athletes.”
Through the early part of the
season, Garczynski (4 goals and
3 assists) and Hayes (5 goals and
3 assists) have been the squad’s
leading scorers, while Norwood’s
back field is playing the way they
did last year. Sophomore Rose
Campbell (left-back) and juniors
Mia Sanizzi (right-back) and Erin
Murphy (center-back) are already
in defensive mode.
“Having the entire defense
back is huge,” the coach
said.”They’re very strong as a unit
back there which is good for us, especially
with a new goalie.”

of its fall foliage, and locals take
the opportunity to tour the town's
favorite pre-holiday event. The
Sunday before the grandest meal
of the year, local residents lace
up their sneakers with the Town's
and are free of charge, but must
The four-mile route is both
challenging and charming as it
winding around the Willett Parkway
neighborhood and finishing
with cheering crowds at Norwood
High School. In previous years,
the race has included over 700
participants, many who call Norwood
as far as Cape Cod and northern
Massachusetts.
Runners of all ages are welcome
to participate in the race and
prizes and awards are presented
to the top three male and female
runners in each age group. Longsleeve
FPAC to Present The Odd Couple and Holiday Trio
Franklin Performing Arts Company’s 26th season, which opened in October
with Fiddler on the Roof, continues this month with Neil Simon’s hilarious The Odd
Couple. Holiday season productions feature Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet The Nutcracker,
the FPAC family-favorite musical Humbug!, and an original FPAC panto with
a twist on the fairy tale classic, Cinderella.
A clever American comedy by one of the most produced playwrights of the
twentieth century, The Odd Couple will be presented at THE BLACK BOX in
downtown Franklin on November 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee on
November 6 at 2 p.m. The Odd Couple is an epic mismatch of personalities, as an
incompatible pair of suddenly single pals becomes roommates. Thrown out by his
wife, the fastidious and uptight news writer, Felix Unger, moves in with the slovenly
sportswriter, Oscar Madison, recently divorced. Unsure why their marriages fell
apart, the friends repeat the same mistakes with each other – with hysterical results.
The Odd Couple won the 1965 Tony Award for Best Author of a Play and was a Best
Play nominee. The renowned buddy tale is the original play behind the hit TV
sitcom and film.
FPAC’s holiday season begins on December 3 and 4 with the company’s annual
production of The Nutcracker. A popular FPAC holiday tradition for more than 20
years, the world-famous ballet will be presented at the Franklin High School auditorium
with live professional orchestra, special guest artists, and more than 100
area dancers.
FPAC’s original panto follows in the British tradition, retelling a well-known
fairy tale in an exaggerated style filled with audience participation, popular songs,
slapstick comedy, jokes, dances and more. This production, based on the story of
Cinderella, will be staged at THE BLACK BOX on December 10 and 11.
FPAC’s large-cast holiday musical, Humbug!, will be presented on December 17
and 18 at the Franklin High School auditorium. A family favorite since debuting
as part of the company’s 2008 season, Humbug! is an original musical retelling of
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. With musical hits of every genre and live accompaniment
by a 10-piece band of professional musicians, Humbug! transports
audiences from Dickensian England to contemporary America as the novels iconic
characters and storyline are cleverly reimagined with modern setting and dialogue.
Mandarin Chinese in Curriculum at St Catherine of
Siena School
With the arrival of two Chinese
guest teachers at Saint Catherine
of Siena School this fall, every
student in the school is now learning
both a European language –
Spanish and an Asian language
– Chinese. For the past two years,
the school offered an afterschool
class in Mandarin Chinese for interested
students. Building on the
success of that program, the Academic
Excellence Subcommittee
of the School Advisory Board and
Saint Catherine’s School Principal,
Mary Russo, knew it was time
to include Mandarin Chinese as
part of the curriculum.
With a grant from the College
Board and the Confucius Institute
of China (Hanban), two guest
teachers were recruited and are
currently working with students
to introduce them to the Chinese
language and culture. Confucius
Institute (Hanban) has sent over
18,000 volunteers to 101 countries
since 2004. The institute’s mission
is to promote cultural and educational
exchanges between China
and the rest of the world. Time
Asian magazine recently reported
on the current need for learning
Chinese worldwide and stated,
“If you want to be ahead of others,
learn Chinese.”
Saint Catherine of Siena
School is benefiting by the energetic
teaching styles of these
two Chinese guest teachers. Mr.
Peibin Tang is an experienced
English and Chinese teacher and
has taught at a primary school in
Yunnan, China, as well as in Ohio
and Spain. Ms. Dayan Chen, also
an experienced teacher of English
and Chinese, taught in both
China and Thailand. This is her
first experience in the U.S. Both
teachers look forward to teaching
younger children and reaching out
to the upper grades as the school
year continues.
Tang recently introduced himself
to students and parents; “This
is a good time to broaden your vision
and understanding and learn
about the diversity of this world,"
Out and About
First there was a concussion. Imagine
an eighty plus pound person landing on
your head after dropping from five feet in
the air. Then there was the wrist sprain
due to hours and hours spent practicing
tumbling -only to have one, just one bad
landing.
There were tears and a lot of them.
Sometimes from falling from a stuntsometimes
from mere exhaustion and
frustration.
Along the way there were issues with
venues. One week we had the gym, the
next we did not. One day at the High
School, another day onto the Savage
Center. I began getting confused where
I was supposed to be some nights, thank
goodness I had someone constantly reminding
me.
If there were no mats, there was no
tumbling. No need for conversations on
that, safety is and always will be priority
one. For a while there was no music,
and no moves-so no dance. But there was
work to do. There was always something
By Dawn C. Fitzgerald
Three Cheers
new to teach and learn, for all of us.
Such is the life of a Norwood Youth
Football and Cheer “B” (NYFC) cheer
coach.
This year I had the privilege of coaching
19 of the craziest, kookiest, coolest,
talented girls that a coach could ask for.
Many of these kids were new-having
had no experience cheering and no idea
how many hours would be dedicated to
doing the same stunting, dancing, and
tumbling. Only to do it all again the following
night.
Were there complaints, sure, after all
we are talking tweens here. These girls
just started Middle School and the grueling
task of getting up at the crack of
dawn, to board a bus, only to eat lunch
at 10 o’clock in the morning. They were
tired, nervous, and just getting into used to
going to their new school.
Add into this years’ mix were the girls
with raging hormones. The two girls that
were best friends at Sunday’s game-now
hate each other’s faces on Tuesday evening
at practice.
Yet they made it work-managing to
balance school, homework, and cheer.
Mostly while maintaining a smile (behind
that façade one girl maybe planning another’s
ultimate demise) but it was never
acted upon and these 19 girls continued
to just work hard.
And it showed.
They had two competitions this year.
The first was earlier in the season. To reiterate,
there were injuries- holding the girls
back from stunting with a full group, no
mats-limiting tumbling and stunting time,
no real practice home.
These girls accepted all these challenges
and did very well at both competitions.
And I am proud to be their coach.
Every season brings a certain kind of
crazy to it. Sometimes its injuries, other
times its drama. This year seemed like the
perfect storm with some new challenge
at every corner. But these girls accepted
the challenges, and somehow managed to
conquer them all.
And I was proud to watch them succeed
from a distance.
Thank you to Norwood Youth Football
and Cheer “B” team for letting me
be your coach. It has been an honor to
watch you all learn and grow and hone
your skills.
I can’t wait to do it alongside all of you
again next year! Here’s to Ally, Brooke,
Brie, Madison, Maddie, Bethany, Kaitlyn
(Jingles) Meghan (Salad), Victoria (Mark),
Kimberley (Princess Bow Head), Elizabeth,
Rachel, Meredith, Hailey, Charlotte
(Charro), Colleen, Katie, Cat, and
Caroline.
Congrats to all the NYFC cheerleaders
for a great season. You all rock! Go
Pet Corner
Apricot says:
WE NEED ADOPTION CENTER VOLUNTEERS!
Apricot
My friends and I currently live at the adoption center
within the Norwood Petco. Our volunteers especially need
help taking care of us Tuesday and Wednesday evenings
and Saturday morning.
What you do: Spend time patting and playing with kittens
and cats, providing socialization, feeding, and cage
cleaning.
What you get: Training, and hours of fun and satisfaction.
(Great alternative for people unable to adopt!)
To apply: You need to be at least 18 years of age, or if you
are a cat-loving kid, ask an adult to apply, and come to help out!
Requires one weekly visit for 1-2 hours. Apply solo or with
a friend! Visit our website to submit a volunteer application:
baystateanimals.org
How volunteers are helping me have a bright future:
Hi! I’m Apricot. I was left behind when my owners moved
(this is illegal!) Thankfully, a nice neighbor fed me while
I was in the abandoned apartment, and reached out to
BSAC. Thin, weary, and scared, I stayed in a foster home
until I felt better and ready to transition to the adoption
center. I’m not always fond of other cats, but I’m very playful
and companionable with humans! Thanks to the center
volunteers and visitors, I've learned that I can be trustful,
and this makes me someone a special human will choose to
live with for the rest of my life -- maybe you?
Biff says:
WE NEED FOSTER HOMES!
Biff
Why a foster home made all the difference for me:
This photo shows me at the feral cat colony where I got
food from kind volunteers. One day the volunteers noticed
that I was bleeding from a neck wound, and managed to
trap me right away. They were surprised that I was friendly!
They brought me to the vet for treatment and neutering,
and then I spent six months in foster for the required quarantine
for Wound of Unknown Origin. After, I was adopted
by a forever family. I’ll always be grateful to the foster home
that was an important part of making this happy ending
possible for me.
What you do: Provide a safe, warm place for a time
period you can comfortably commit to: a few days, weeks,
months, or for the life of the cat. BSAC screens prospective
adoptive parents to assure that the matches will be right for
both the cat and the family.
• Short-term foster for pregnant moms until delivery,
kittens or nursing moms with kittens, and stray cats or
kittens in need of socialization in order for them to become
adoptable
• Long-term foster: Maybe you have the shelter space
and love to offer a cat that has a medical condition or
socialization issue that renders the kitty hard to adopt.
Some of our unsocialized house cats adjust great to
homes that have cats and dogs that welcome feline
friendship. Need a buddy for your lonely cat? We may
have the perfect solution!
What you get: Helpful information and resources from
an experienced foster parent to mentor you through the
process. Veterinary care if the need for medical attention
arises. Whenever possible, long-term foster homes receive
donated food and litter for the remainder of the feline’s life.
The rewards of living with a cat that otherwise would have
died outside or been put to sleep just because they are not
perfect is beyond what you can imagine.
To apply: Visit our website to submit a volunteer application:
My name is Baby!
Baby
My elderly owner passed away. We were very close. I was
taken in by another family member, but they are not able
to take me with them when they move to their new location
and I am looking for another home. I hope this will be
my forever family and home. I like to be patted, and I get
along with people as well as other cats. Come visit me at the
adoption center!
Visit Apricot, Baby, and the other cats in our adoption
center anytime during Norwood Petco’s store hours:
KEYS TO HEALTH: Lost Cats
Meowth, Biff, and Apricot are among the numerous cats
that have come to us because they were on their own and in
dire need. Here are actions you can take to help:
If you have seen a cat you think might be on her own and
going through a tough time:
• Ask around the neighborhood to see if anyone is missing
her.
• Contact area vets, online lost pet registries, and look for
lost cat posters.
• Post flyers in the area with photos and your contact
information.
• Tape a note to the kitty’s collar asking the owner to
contact you so you know she belongs to someone.
• If you have no luck, contact us! info@baystateanimals.org
If you have a cat:
• Even if she is strictly indoors (which we strongly recommend
for health and safety reasons), make sure she
has a microchip or collar with your current contact information.
• If she is tempted to escape outdoors, keep a small can
with change in it near the door, and have everyone rattle
it as they enter and exit - this makes the doorway an
unpleasant place your kitty will choose not to go near.
• If the worst happens and she does escape, taking swift
action in the first 24 hours is crucial. Immediately look
around the exterior of your home for likely hiding
places - under bushes, in a shed, under a porch. Put
food near the door, or in a humane trap located in a
protected place, and check it often. Reach out to the
sources described above for finding a lost cat.
See your vet for more information.
DONATIONS WELCOMED! We always need litter (Petco’s
scoopable is ideal). We have empty containers on top of the
cage at the back of the shelter that you can take to the litter
section of the store. We also need canned and hard food for
the feral colonies our volunteers look after. Good old checks
are also quite welcomed - they can help defray expenses.
Please see our website: baystateanimals.org
CONTACT US Reach out to Bay State Animal
Cooperative, Inc. if you need pet care assistance, are
surrendering a loved one, seeking some advice, or
want to add a furry feline friend to your family. You
can reach us at info@baystateanimals.org or check
us out at baystateanimals.org or facebook.com/
BSAC09. Visit our adoptable cats at the Norwood Petco
our adoption center, foster care, fundraising, and are
currently taking letters of interest from qualified
applicants for board member positions.

Register O’Donnell Reports Increased Lending in Norfolk County
It was a split decision when
it came to 3rd quarter real estate
data (July-September 2016)
in Norfolk County, according
to Register of Deeds William P.
Selling or Buying a Home?
“Mr. Keady was awesome. He gave
great advise that got my house sold on
the first day over asking price! He gave
specific examples on small projects to be
done ahead of time that would increase
the value of my home as well as how to
stage it. ” Dave Morse
Put my 30+ years experience
to work for you
O’Donnell. The Register noted
that while real estate sales were
flat, the lending market continued
to boom thanks to continuing low
interest rates.
“Overall, Norfolk County is
holding its own in terms of real
estate sales," Registrar O'Donnell
said. "
A total of 5,295 property
transactions were recorded in
the county during the 3rd quarter,
representing a 1% reduction
from same period in 2015. However,
total real estate volume, both
residential and commercial, for
the quarter came in at $2.9 billion,
a 21% increase compared to
last year’s numbers. The average
sales price, including both residential
and commercial quarter
3 was $808,198, a solid 25% increase
year over year. It should be
noted the total sales and average
sales numbers were impacted by a
$205 million dollar sale of Westwood
Station that took place in
mid-August.”
“The lending market was the
real silver lining story, noted Registrar
O’Donnell
The total number of mortgages
recorded was 9,717, a solid 21%
increase from the previous year. In
addition, total mortgage financing
finished at $4.65 billion for the
quarter, a 34% increase from last
year’s 3rd quarter 2015. Clearly,
consumers and businessmen are
taking advantage of continuing
low interest rates to pay for new
home purchases, home improvements,
education expenses and
expansion of business. More than
anything, these robust lending figures
tell us the eastern Massachusetts
economy remains vibrant.”
While there is no question the
local economy remains on solid
footing, some of our neighbors
continue to face economic challenges.
a sobering 34% increase year
over year. More encouraging was
the reduction in the number of
Notice to Foreclose Mortgage
recordings, the first step in the
foreclosure process. A total of 201
Notice to Foreclose Mortgage filings
were recorded during the 3rd
quarter period compared to 238
for the 3rd quarter 2015. While
one foreclosure filing is one too
many, hopefully this trend in reduced
filings will continue,” stated
O’Donnell.
O’Donnell went on to list the
ways the Registry of Deeds can
help those facing a foreclosure.
“The Norfolk County Registry of
Deeds continues to partner with
Quincy Community Action Programs
at (617) 479-8181 x-376
and Neighbor Works Southern
Mass at (508) 598-0950 to help
anyone who has received a Notice
to Foreclose Mortgage from
a lender. Another option is to
call the Massachusetts Attorney
General’s HomeCorps program
at (617) 573-5333. I would urge
those facing issues paying a mortgage
to avail themselves of these
excellent programs,” stated Register
O’Donnell.
In conclusion Register
O’Donnell stated, “While the
Norfolk County real estate sales
figures were flat for the 3rd quarter
2016, I am glad there was no
significant drop- off. What was
really encouraging were the solid
numbers seen in lending activity.
One note, however, the Federal
Reserve is again considering raising
interest rates before year’s end.
We will need to watch this carefully
to see how it affects real estate
activity.”
Norwood Housing Prices
Continue to Rise
by Bella Caggiano
While comparing the sale of single family homes in September, 2015 and September, 2016,
the numbers remain equal, however, the average sale price in Norwood is still on an upward
trend. Local residents should be pleased with the year-over-year results, with the average price
rising to $447,767, in contrast to $419,878 in 2015. The price range chart shows the majority
of single family homes in town are selling between $350,000 and $600,000.
Homeowners, however, had to wait approximately a week longer to accept an offer, but
mortgage companies may be moving quicker with homes closing almost two weeks sooner than
the same time period last year.
Happy Thanksgiving
As the Holiday season approaches, I am reminded of those who have helped
me grow in my Real Estate career.
Clearly I don’t get enough opportunity to personally say “thank you” even
though I am thankful every day. Yet at this special time, I want to personally
express my deepest appreciation for placing your confidence in me, and
supporting my business with your friendship and referrals.
Wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving. May the joy of the
holidays extend to you and your family now and throughout the
coming year.
